  • Add this to my list of "thought it was a short idea but turned out to be very long"
I could have gone on about the creative skill and the ways to optimize paintings but tbh, I could go on forever on ways to gain skills faster as a whole so just remember this video is about painting. I was tempted to add sketching to the list but maybe in the future I revisit sketching...or not idk
Anyways, what is your favorite iteration of painting? Mine?
Sims 1 is the foundation as always and it did fall shorter than usual this time imo. I thought there were way more paintings for some reason but it is just the 4. So yeah, not impressed but its not like I expect a lot from Sims 1 with most details
Sims 2 also fell a little short for me but I did like how free time added a little more into it. I didnt touch on the business side of things with this one but its a cool side of any skill if you have open for business
Sims 3 was when it really started feeling more interesting for me, just the fact that sims can paint anything in the world by taking a picture for reference feels more involved than usual. I also love the variety in paintings
Sims 4 is the superior one if we talk about styles of painting alone, they were so many paintings that there was no way I could fit them all for a picture even if I focused on one size. As a skill, it also feels well done cause you dont gain it super fast (unless youre actively trying to) and the burnout feels very real. I think it might be my favorite with Sims 3 going right behind it. I didnt appreciate them not letting children paint though, that is a weird move.
But that is just my opinion, let me know yours and I will see you on the next one. I was thinking on revisiting ghosts but Ill wait for the life and death expansion, so I am considering ghost hunting but we will see

I love painting in Sims 2. It's a very powerful tool.
    1) Toddlers scribbles from the art table can be picked up and put on the wall.
    2) Looking at a good painting three times can fill the fun bar to the top.
    3) Sims can ask others to join them in looking at paintings, so you can have functional art galleries. Unfortunately this option is a bit buggy.
    4) When you paint portraits, the sim being painted can indicate if they like it or hate it (again a bit buggy)
    5) Custom painting is such a powerful tool. You can paint anything if the size is right. Newspapers, posters, famous artists, the list is endless. In my game one sim only paints horses, another only Da Vinci. Maxis defaults are not important. Artist now can have a style uniquely their own, and when they gift other Sims, you know where the painting is from.
    6) When you add Open for Business, you now can sell that unique art. I got one sim that only sells farm signs, whilst another only sells expensive pictures of classical horses.
    7) There is a Sims 2 cheat that allows you to replace any photo with a new image. Absolutely perfect for signs, but it may not be relevant here, because it does need a external paint programme. Any will do.

In Sims 4 there is also Freelancer Digital Artist career, which is about painting on the tablet.
Anyway, I actually like the fact that in Sims 4 you have to pay for the canvas. It brings some balance to otherwise overpowered skill. And, let's face it, especially in Sims 3, painting was easy money. Glad they changed this. And these different art styles are also great. But I don't like the fact that large canvas in Sims 4 is the size of medium canvas in previous games. Still, Sims 4 is my winner here.

Overall, TS3 wins. The skill journal and opportunities alone push it over the edge. For me, TS2 would win outright, if painting was its own skill.
However, some notable accolades go to TS1 for their randomness in creativity level for children (every child has different creativity levels). Not certain about TS4, but all the others, finished paintings steadily increase in value over time. TS2:FT makes painting values accelerate when in the zone and even more so when painting at the hobby lot. TS2:NL+ (NL added fury), allows enemies to sabotage paintings, which can increase/decrease values, depending on the saboteur's creativity level. TS2:OFB allows even low creativity paintings to be sold as if they are masterpieces, accordingly with increased creativity skill when sold (that includes any toddler's fingerpaintings). TS2:U's drafting table also works in similar fashion. Also, I just recently discovered this from another video covering paintings, that TS2 paintings vary with personality (combined with custom paintings, there are an infinite amount of paintings). Btw, TS4's mood paintings are just a reintroduction on a smaller scale to TS2's personality differences. Not certain with TS1, but TS2+ additional paintings are unlocked with certain DLC installed.
While many might assume TS4 to reign supreme, especially with the emotion system, it merely takes elements from previous games, but all are watered down compared to its predecessors.

As an artist, I'd say Sims 4 is the winner, but I can't say that with certainty. I love the variety of tools available to draw with and the emotions that go into the drawings. It makes sense as an artist. The only thing holding it back is that Sims 4 has a really shitty gameplay tied to the emotions system, so I don't really enjoy it that much. 😅

    • @TheMya1988
      @TheMya1988 Місяць тому +3

@@EclaireIV The emotion details in paintings in TS4 is a watered down version of TS2's personality variations in paintings. I could go even further to say the entire emotion system of TS4 is a watered down version of even TS1's personality system (which is bases upon just personality points, interests, skill levels and mood levels). TS2 goes the farthest regarding emotions, with added interests, hobbies (and enthusiasm levels), aspirations (along with benefits and levels), employment/education levels, chemistry/attraction (with enhanced star signs, likes/dislikes, one-sided relationship scores, aspirations, etc.), relationship statuses and levels (combined with fury and enemies), occults/hybrids, magic/potions, reputation, enhanced personality points (can evolve multidirectionally by encouragement, occult status, potions/magic [temporarily]), misc. benefits, perks and debuffs (i.e. from: vacations, business ownerships, university, etc.), plus the most in-depth memories system that ties all other systems together.
While I do not consider myself a graphic artist (cannot even make stick figures look interesting), I am a writer, who uses words to paint pictures. As such, TS4 might be able to barely squeak ahead of TS1 for painting, it pales in comparison to TS2's personality-based painting system and TS3's trait-based painting system.

@@adrianblake8876 I am a "she," not a "he," but am not offended if you are not certain, and call me "they." Only TS1 and TS2 have a personality points system. TS3/4 both have traits systems. With that said, TS3 does vary in painting styles, according to traits, which is an enhanced version of TS2's variations from personality points + aspirations (albeit, TS3 is far more limited to just a few traits), as the variations are far more striking, and not just subtle nuances.

Technically they're still painting. Mixed media to be more precise. And to be honest, for alot of kids, that is how they do art at home - the only place they use an easle is in kinder. Not many schools at least here in Australia have easles until highschool. Hell I'm a watercolour Illustrator and I don't use one either! I paint on my lap or at a desk as an easle is cumbersome and takes up a lot of space and isn't as portable as I'd like. I'd love the sims to eventually allow you to have a sketchbook & have the sim sit on the floor, chair or desk and draw away but dream for another day😊

It's useful if you have mods for certain careers that don't come up in the regular careers list (not mentioning them here but you can take a wild guess & be right😂). I use it for rags to ritches artist sims who sell thier own art at the flea market as they are not employed by anyone or working for commissions. They're 100% in it for themselves & their art. I'm not going to lie, as an illustrator myself who used to sell my own work at markets as my own boss without commision jobs or working for a company it does what it needs to by giving you a job title and yes, some days you don't get paid because you don't make a sale and gameplay wise unless they'revery specific with what you use that for it would be very hard for it to track every created thing your sims sold so leaving it open is a better solutionto having a buggy feature few will use. I find it is great for those creative pursuits that make more money off the flea market tables than selling on Plopsy or in a Get to Work shop (as some stuff just doesn't sell or work well in those shops I find)
