I bought one for my E150 and I picked up the shell ... it fits perfect. I have a large indoor room wherever I go. It's built like you paid good money for it. Definitely use the poles. Free-standing or not, it's just smart.
Yes. The poles attach to the cross bars and drop using a hinge. There are three LED strips. It also comes with tie downs so you can direct the water off of it; the tie downs create a channel between the cross bars.
Yes. The issue here are the brackets are not heavy duty enough. I bought some 3/16 steel from Home Depot and slid the 1.25" x 13 " steel under the bracket to take the flex out of it. The best thing to do is keep the spacing of the brackets as far apart as possible. This thing is relatively heavy, so a thick and solid stance is necessary.

Should be using washers under bolt heads used to mount bracket to roof rack. Tip for folks watching this.
I didn't catch what kind of roof rack you're using...
Good video. Are the 6 poles all attached to the frame? Also, how many LED light strips are there?

They claim it can be freestanding, but it looks like it sags pretty bad without the poles
