The hatch on this vehicle is a swing out and not a lift up style.

Should be using washers under bolt heads used to mount bracket to roof rack. Tip for folks watching this.

I bought one for my E150 and I picked up the shell ... it fits perfect. I have a large indoor room wherever I go. It's built like you paid good money for it. Definitely use the poles. Free-standing or not, it's just smart.

They claim it can be freestanding, but it looks like it sags pretty bad without the poles

Yes. The issue here are the brackets are not heavy duty enough. I bought some 3/16 steel from Home Depot and slid the 1.25" x 13 " steel under the bracket to take the flex out of it. The best thing to do is keep the spacing of the brackets as far apart as possible. This thing is relatively heavy, so a thick and solid stance is necessary.
