I've heard a variety of versions, and I like this one best. It's a very dark Christmas song, and the sheer simplicity of the music and vocals are just right for the mood of this song.
Yes,this is marvelous.i first heard it on the first "A very Special Christmas" album, years ago,and loved it.I agree,i don't think she gets the attention she deserves for that fabulous rich and very expressive voice! Now I'm going to listen to it again!
I just clicked on this song, as posted by Alison Moyet, and all comments are forbidden. What the hay?! This is the best version I have ever heard. God bless Alison!
Such a hauntingly beautiful song! Her voice is absolutely amazing!!! Quite a dark and somber song, but somehow still evokes positivity and hope! Still gives me chills every time I hear it!
This reading of this Christmas classic is a FANTASTIC rendition of it, free of all the usual trappings of most modern versions like excessive embellishment and over-the-top rhythmic alteration and especially the post-Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey flourishes of arpeggios in the span of a quarter note. If all artists would treat classic traditional Christmas carols with the same dignity and soft touch that Alf does, I would not have to complain about the crappy modern versions of these songs.
I have just started to sing in a local choir hee in Cornwall, and its a very good version of a real bitter sweet number, Alison`s voice is well suited to it, she`s just brill, and very under valued, what a start.
This video is better than the other one I saw...no weird cartoony picture. That said, I absolutely love this song...though it is bittersweet when you listen to the lyrics. Miss Moyet's voice is a perfect fit for this song...thanks for posting this!
Lullay, lullay My little tiny child By-by, lullay, lullay Lullay, lullay My little tiny child By-by, lullay, lullay Oh, sisters two How may we do For to preserve this day? This poor youngling Of whom we do sing By-by, lullay, lullay Herod the King In his raging Charged he hath this day His men of might In his own sight All children young to slay Then woe is me Poor child for thee And ever mourn and say For thy parting Nor say nor sing By-by, lullay, lullay Lullay, lullay My little tiny child By-by, lullay, lullay
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! I've been looking for this all season. But the problem is the radio stations usually play this during and after Christmas Day, and even thento hear it twice is very lucky. You've made my Christmas right here. Thanks again!!!
I can understand it's "too depressing", but this song is literally a mother's lullaby to her MURDERED BABY. It's not supposed to be upbeat and happy! You aren't supposed to be able to listen to it without feeling, compassion, understanding, and sorrow over the slaughter of innocents. I, too, think this is the best version of this song. It's very beautiful and so bottomlessly sad.
Well it is that time again Nov,21 isn't to early to start with the Christmas Music. I have known of this song for years but it was the Christmas Season of 2014 i kept hearing this on the radio. Finally i had to find out who it was, by the time i found out i was too late (found it on Christmas Day of that year). So i made it a point to make a Christmas Mix last year and throw it on. I did that but what was even better is one of mine and im sure a favorite of a lot of other people is The Very Special Christmas Red Album from 1987. I noticed that this song is on there, last year Walmart had the Red and Green cd in a two pack for $10.
@jazzliscious13 I totally agree! Moreover, I have always adored this carol and , although I have heard plenty of other versions, this one here is for me the one and only ULTIMATE original. It is so sad when you understand the lyrics and what all this is about - The slaughter of the innocent little boys, yet, at the same time, it is so hauntingly beautiful. BTW, when you look at the music and listen to it, it resembles Polish Christmas carols-lullabies.
@@suilvenmountain2395 Mmm, more like six - Yazoo were prominent from 1982 with Don't Go, Nobody's Diary and Only You, while only at the end of 1988 did Yazz break onto the scene with The Only Way Is Up...
unusual cover of the Coventry Carol. tempo is too fast and the drums, synth, and bass is not matching at all. i dont like it a single bit. do i have anything nice to say? mmmm no. sorry.
This is one of my favourite renditions of the song.
mine too

She sings the agony of the grieving mothers. Beautiful, heartbreaking version.
True
fantastic voice and sound! Alison Moyet's great as always!
Such a hauntingly beautiful song! Her voice is absolutely amazing!!! Quite a dark and somber song, but somehow still evokes positivity and hope! Still gives me chills every time I hear it!
Love this version of Coventry Carol, I sang this to my son when he was 3 months old and in hospital. Tempo is just right

The way she sings at the end is wonderful
The great Alison Moyet..... What an amazing singer!
My favorite christmas carol. But it's soooooo sad.
beautiful carol and beautiful contalto voice

Majestic ! Adorable! Gloriously Grief Stricken ! Who is Sufficient for the Anguish Expressed in this Dirge? God Alone Knows!!! V. W.
My favorite version of this song......beautiful
This is one of the best versions of the Christmas carol
Wow! never expected this from Alison Moyet! Great.
She did another amazing Song. The devil called love?
My favorite for decades already!
ONE OF THE BEST VERSION I HAVE HEARD
My favorite version of this song.

I love Loreena McKennitt. But her version of
this song doesn't capture the pain and rare
ethereal beauty of Alison's version. 💙⭐

This version is perfectly foreboding
I hear a lot of people call this version "too depressing".
Ummm... the song is literally about babies being gruesomely murdered...
An intelligent reply to an absurdly written post.
Ignorance is bliss and embarrassing.

Such a rich, soulful voice. Miss her
You shouldn’t miss her!
She’s going on tour with Tears For Fears in 2022.
So beautiful.
so beautiful
Imagine Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, Whitney Houston and Madonna on the same album as A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS who this is from!
Perfect diction - beautiful rendering.
Beautiful ❤

Wow, that was really lovely.
Amazing!!!
exquisite take on a 500 year old carol
This tells the sad side of the Christmas story. Maybe one reason it's never heard on the radio.
there is a stunning 3 girl acappella version featured in the old tv show The Pretender. It plays all episode and it is amazing.
Bruce Powell yes
Extremely 80s/90s vibes
A good thing, no?
❤😂Super-hit on christmas and colm night.. perfection .Balsam for listening fan🎶🎶🎧☔💧🕳️🌒🌠🌌🌟
Hallelujah the little tiny child, ba ba lu lee lu Lang.
ISnt Annie Lennox singing in this?
+Vox Dei Nope, this is Alison Moyet.
+Vox Dei Though there is an Annie Lennox version of this song on UA-cam. Look for it.
@@PatrickTheWriter I wouldn't bother
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!
What a voice! She could sing the phone boo,k and I'd be rapt.
Extra to Annie Lennox, this is my favorite version
Better than Annie's. Annie sings it too loudly; she'd wake the infant.
I miss Yazz :-(
Nicholas Jacobs Not that Alison Moyet had any connection with Yazz and the Plastic Population, having been a member of Yazoo.
about 10 years out!
cbak12sg In the US they were called Yaz

80s meeting deep carol singing.
♥️Ethereal♥️
Awesome voice. Shame about the dodgy synths
Except
Hated the music
Loved the voice

So I take it you dont like it then?
It is an interpretation so it doesn´t have to fit the original .
You think the tempo is too fast ??? im not a musician but a regular rock tune is in 4/4 time this is slower than that.
pakachawhatever, can't you hear the heartache of the Slaughter of the Innocent Babes? Are your ears and heart clogged with Superglue?
yobbo3 maybe. At least, I know mine are.
Sorry - not for me. Nothing tops Kings College.
