Thank you everyone for your comments & explanation of this most reverently sorrowful melody. I've listened to various versions for years since I 1st heard it. However, until today after reading all the details of the original history I didn't understand but now I do. How fitting & appropriate in spite of the technical difficulties of skipping & stopping. There are other renditions that are just as precious with some being more clear than this one. Praise God for His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, the only Saviour this world will ever know.
One of the most haunting and beautiful of all of our ancient carols.
this just can't be bettered as Kings do it so perfectly. Sadly the video is so old now it's badly damaged. Could someone PLEASE re-post a playable version?
Been there, listened to that. Before there were "bucket lists". Gorgeous building. Very beautiful sound. Went for Evensong.
Editing issues and all I listened to this right through and got goosebumps.
The edit is shagged. A beautiful performance of a haunting piece rendered unlistenable by weird cuts and jumps.
Simply stunning and beautiful.
beautiful. One of my favourites along with the Wexford carol
Beautiful! Don’t understand the words but just the history of this song fills my heart for the innocent babies!
I love to play this in the piano. This is a beautiful version.
Yes,, let us remember this day, the massacre of young children by King Herod in his attempt to kill the infant Jesus..The first holy innocents . A most beautiful medieval carol to remember them and their weeping mothers. Let us pray for all parents who have lost children - May the Lord give them the strength, support and the comfort that He is always with them. Put your faith & trust in the Lord.
Unfortunately down the centuries the Church has been just as responsible for the massacre of the innocents as the Herod fable. Despite the stern words of Jesus that it's better they be cast into the depths of the sea with a millstone around their necks than harm a child, I've investigated hundreds of cases in which his followers have done precisely that. Sometimes even invoking Jesus' name in the process.
A beautiful carol though.
@@RH-xf4vf The bodies of the innocent native children in my country, Canada, who attended the residential school system are just being uncovered now. It is the tragedy of how religious orders thought they were helping and civilizing them but they were destroying them and their culture.
It puts lullabies into perspective!
Beautiful. I have just twigged that this is the melody used in the soundtrack of The Nativity movie which opens and closes with the scenes where Herod's soldiers are going in to slaughter the babies in Bethlehem. It makes sense now. A haunting medieval melody. I was not familiar with this carol before.
It was originally (allegedly) part of the 14th century Coventry Mystery Plays (or Corpus Christi Pageants) which were still performed in the old Cathedral ruins until very recently, or at least a couple of them were. The blatant link to 'Nativity' is that the play of the film's title is performed in the Cathedral ruins.
Why does it keep cutting/skipping? and it cuts at the end Who put this together?
Why the weird editing though
This is how Christmas should be , focus on the child Jesus
I agree it should, but this is about the Holy Innocents that Herod murdered, not about Jesus himself.
A beautiful, and utterly heartbreaking song.
haha, everything about Christmas now is always about Santa Claus 🙁, we forget the reason why we celebrate Christmas is because *HIM, The Biggest Gift From God To Us*
I noticed it was a bit jumpy, however lovely song
This is very badly edited, did you not watch it before uploading?
Beautiful carol, beautiful setting, very odd editing.
This upload is jacked, or UA-cam is broken.
omg these are the guys from the helium video
I make this plea yet again....PLEASE... can someone with the technical ability and patience bring this back to life?? As a former chorister this was my favourite. I will never tire of this carol. I am sure Kings College would willingly oblige...
You sang this in choir?
I'm extremely envious. 🙏
