It's scary how time repeats itself over and over they say we've come a long way but it looks like to me we've gone a long way back.... this man was great and spoke the truth about America
I remember, when this was released in 1975. I was 21 years old and I was already 'conscious'. It is still relevant today, given who is in the Whitehouse. And most like, the same result will occur--nothing but Pardons will occur.
Everytime I hear this, i want to cry that it is not heard as it should be heard! We could put things like this in class and when finished, give them a test at end of and ask what they got from this educational artist genius! Have Mercy for heroes such as this and rappers, TAKE NOTE!
RIP, Brother Gil. I'll never forget the time I sat right next to as your performed at Yoshi's in Frisco. Just a year later, you passed over to the other side.
When I first heard this song/rap in the 70s the politics of Watergate was unprecedented. The end where Gil Scott says "what goes around...comes around" has had no truer meaning than the days since 9/11. The revolution will not be televised - it's live!
It is so sad that my realization of this genius only came after his death. I loved "B Movie" 30 years ago, and for some reason never followed through and became a fan. We need more poets like Gil to open our minds to todays inequalities.....
It amazes me how subjects like this one can bring people together to argue, but seldom to agree. There are several certainties that could be the basis for a collective move forward if we were to recognize them. 1. There is something definitely wrong. 2. None of us has THE solution. 3. As long as we let insignificant ideological, religious, or philosophical nuances grow into insurmountable obstacles to our collective work, then we will always be stuck. Look for agreements not arguments...
I am White but everything what make my mind and thinking is come from afroamericans and i am pride abut that and very tankfull.... PS mix cloude ...dear mr.man I have some of that influence on mix cloude so please enjoy and i hope one Day i Will come in America and be part of BLM lbecouse i feel that i am allrady part of that...cheers

When I started out in Radio, I was asked to Emcee his concert and got to meet him, Brian, and the Midnight Band backstage before the gig. Love the brother....brilliant. His poetry never gets old.....
I would like to think, that if Mr. GIL Scott Heron was alive what he would be saying about President NUMBER 45 WHOA..... His songs are relevant as they were when I shared the Last Poets in my 10th grade English class of 69-70. Loved him will Free Will love all his music, until his Last One New York is killing me, and me and the Devil. All of his music, with.Brian Jackson. Let's just say I loved his music, his wisdom, his delivery.Rip Gil....
WOW!! This is my first time ever hearing this and if this was first done in '75 yes things have gotten a little better but we've still got a long way to go!!!!
WOW! Ok, i'm white and this guy is a serious genius. I found him in GTA 4 video game track, and compared to the crap rap/pop lady crap- crap, and the music of today, they couldn't come close to the talent level this man has. And i was born way after all of this music was recorded. Not was Gil Scott a musician, he was a master speaker, poet and preacher of the street too. Damn!
@ilovebmx27 Gil Scott Heron is a Chicago born 60 year old man, 6'1" tall, slim build and of African American decent. He has kept a large Afro style haircut and beard since the late 1960's.
i remember when these words were first spoken...we were proud and awake...somehow we believe the struggle is over..dont think that because a blackman is running for the highest office of the land...we aint catching hell...
What´s so interesting about gil´s art is how his stuff sounds like it was recorded in the 00s. Anybody knows "watergate blues"? Man, all you have to do is exchange the words "vietnamese" with "iraqi" and the whole song could be about TODAY!!!! Long live Gil!
I just now discovered Gill Scott Heron and I am sad sad. Everything there is to know is within his words, within his speech. And fifty years later ‘shit’ was learnd But what a beautiful speaker. This beauty just can’t be understood by the hating bunch.
"They call it due process and some people are overdue" That line resonates so much with me, it is so simple and yet relevant to current affairs. Know what I'm sayin. Where's the accountability hiding. Will we ever know? hah
Respectful correction, Gil did not endorse the title 'Grandfather of rap' he preferred to be thought of as a poet. I agree in that the content and intent of his words were far more intellectual than most rap.
Rap GIL- Scott Heron's time which is my time is when BROTHERS got 2 gether to TALK CURRENT EVENTS, not gendre of music & yes he is a poet for those that understand. Food For Thought Go Figure 🤔
Rap of 2 day have a few poets but they come @ u with street knowledge. Ice Cube, & T, KRS, which hits the lower intellect no less the truth. Example, In a rest. with my lady BLK. SIS. all the characteristics of a white Coco Chanel that type will not listen to that music to vulgar, but the White Kid n the burbs r all up on it.
Yeah apparently he didn't like the Godfather of Rap thing. But he also didn't really have a problem with rap music he just wished more rappers were more conscious and talked about social issues. Which since the 90s theres been tons of great conscious rappers.
Gil Scott-Heron's message gets older, but it never gets less relevant.
Krystyn White
Exactly....

You are so right, just change the names, and the years......

Omg yes. Tragically so.
William E., yes these words are very painfully timeless. Peace and Blessings to you🙏

He called it like it was and still is...today.
It's scary how time repeats itself over and over they say we've come a long way but it looks like to me we've gone a long way back.... this man was great and spoke the truth about America
The stuff he's talking about is still happening in American politics.
it is the case today believe me but recovered and held hostage by the media which use it for political ends to manipulate the most fragile
@@Zebula1918 It's sure the case today (re. Flynn).

"I didn't vote for him. Did you vote for him?" School children should listen to GSH.
We will never experience what he gave us. Never, he was a true symbol of the truth about america and the struggle which will continue.

Listening to Gil tonight and what a genius! I missed him during the Bush administration. He was one to tell it like it is. Amazing!
This is FIT also for all the Brazilian politics...
