  • There are a variety of choices for headgear to start your young horse, from halters to hackamores to snaffle bits. Here are some options I have used and my most recent choice used in the colt starting series.
    About Herm Gailey:
Herm Gailey has spent a lifetime with horses. He is a nonprofessional rider who starts and trains his own horses to successful careers in multiple disciplines. Away from the show ring Herm retains a deep respect and appreciation for good reliable trail riding horses and believes that all horses benefit from this type of riding.
There is nothing for sale here. If these videos allow one person to avoid fear, frustration, or injury or help one horse get a better deal, then that is payment in full.

Lots of great options, you can not go wrong with any of them. What I do is put a snaffle bit on over a rope halter then attach the reins through the ring to the halter. I feel that gives me the best of both worlds.

Good video Herm, From the years that you've known me, you know that the rope halter is my go to. I still use it today with all of my students. I use it for all of the ground work in preparation for being in the saddle and the first rides where the hands have not become skilled enough to ensure softness. The horse industry is full of "Gadgets" and I have encountered folks with hundreds of bits and no clue of what's best for the horse and a safe successful ride. Thanks for the good information you share with us. Augie

Fantastic breakdown. I've been really curious about the one you explained first, with the soft-wrapped nose band. Thank you!
