Hi Brendan, thanks for the comment. I too find it frustrating. Though hopefully even if the FDA choose to enforce the ruling, other countries will not follow suite as there seems to be no safety concerns so NMN will still be available through other channels.
One doctor on UA-cam (conquer aging or die trying) is doing all sorts of tests on himself. One test was to test NMN vs Niacin for elevating NAD+. He took 1000mg daily of NMN, tested his NAD+ levels, they were not up to normal (35 or something like that). He then took Niacin at 600mg daily and his NAD+ test showed high levels (69 which is high in the above normal range). So if they outlaw NMN we can always jump to Niacin. It's cheap. There is the flush thing but it only took me a week or less to adapt to 600mg daily. Truth is.. I kinda like the flush.
NMN is the phosphate form of niacin, which is the acidification form of nicotine. Niacin can only increase NAD+in the blood and then be degraded. NMN can enter cells from the blood and increase intracellular NAD+, which is where NAD+works.
I tried both niacin 500 mg and NMN 1000+ mg. Tested with lab for intracellular NAD. Both gave similar results about 60 - 70 uMol of NAD inside cells. Niacin worked a bit better. Baseline was about 25-30 uMol.
Hi John, thanks for your question. I normally take a NAD booster, normally NMN. And also TMG (both because of the possible impact of NMN and because TMG is healthy anyway). At the moment I am taking Time+ by Nuchido which is based on nicotinamide and aims to boost the NAD by activating the salvage pathway.

The first is that the metabolism of NMN and NR is not full characterized, note our conversations with Drs Joseph Baur and Lindsay Wu, so it is not clear that taking NMN and nicotinamide come out the same. The other is that I don't think Metrobiotech would have any hope of having nicotinamide declared a drug so there would be no point in them studying it.

My point is Niacinamide aka nicotinamide is also an NAD precursor which is readily absorbed into the cells which is not the case for NMN which has to be converted to NR and Nicotinamide prior to absorption. Given this dynamic my question is it worth spending so much $$ on NMN when you can use Nicotinamide for literally pennies on the pill to achieve the same result? Also Nicotinamide is vitamin B3 so yes Metrobiotech cannot make money on it. cheers

Thank you for the update. Very upsetting to think they even have a chance of taking NMN away from people so a company can monopolize income from this. I understand this form “crystalline” is a specialized form of NMN, but unless they prove the crystalline form is different from regular powdered NMN, like that sold by DoNotAge, this company (Dr Sinclair) should not have a monopoly on NMN along with the crystalline form. Very frustrating to see this manipulation of supplement to have it re-designated as a drug to make money. If a supplement can cure a disease then so be it.

Niacin is a troublesome molecule and should be handled with care large doses above 500 milligrams can be problematic

I don't understand why choose NMN over Nicotinamide which is what Nmn or NR is converted to prior to absorption? Nicotinamide is dirt dirt cheap also.
