just found out about this pattern from Christy's email. Thank you for such a versatile pattern. As an experienced crocheter, your tutorial is so appreciated.
Just love Kristin s patterns and channel also ,I’m making her new poncho design at the moment but will make this one after so I’ve got to 2 gorgeous poncho s to wear .
I am fine with Susan Bates or Boye hooks. I don't understand the 'ergonomic' hooks, they seem bulky to me. I haved some wooden ones, but love my old school aluminum or steel hooks. I learned to crochet when I was 6 😁
Thank You Ms MarlyBird I love this and will be making it. This is one of the best tutorials and I love the tips for reading the pattern. I need all the help I can get 😁. I did a thumbs up and subscribed. Again thank you. I love Kristin's things as well enjoy her Yarn on the Beach.
That yarn color is just fabulous and in my “color block” (colors that go with my skin tone). Chic Sheep and this pattern are on my “crocheting bucket list.” Thanks
Great video. I would have loved to see the actual poncho creation. i understand it is time consuming and video needs to be adjusted accordingly, but still would have been lovely to see the actual one.

Lesley Strom i love the way you put emphasis on “me”. It’s true as crochet artists we tend to always give away our work and forget to treat ourselves to our creations . :)
I absolutely loved the poncho, and i tried knitting it but in between i find it confusing , so could you please give me its details on how can i knit it perfectly like you did there.😄your help is highly appreciated.thank you.
Hi, new crocheter here, would a 5 weight yarn be ok to use for this project? If so, what size hook would you recommend? Gorgeous poncho, just what I have been looking to try for my first attempt. :)
NB FYI I have completed this Poncho. but use much more yarn than stated. I used James c brett double knit 100g x 290mts each ball I used almost 8 balls. When i had finished the 12 repeats rows 2-5 it only gave me 39cm so I had to continued another 5 sets or rows 2 to 5 before i reach 56cm, Total of 17 rows 2-5. The start chain of 218 chains gave me the correct 122cm 36 shells, The other change was when doing the cowl neck I started the first two rows of shells designs as shown but the I reverse but crocheting from the inside so when the cowl neck is folded over the same design on the correct side is shown.
That IS a large amount of skeins, so I would suggest a different type of yarn that holds more yardage. I hate RedHeart yarn because it is so cheaply made and stiff and scratchy, so I use yarns bought in specialty stores and although I pay a bit more I get more yardage. Or you can get the one pounder yarn skein in Bernet or Lion Brand. Same quality as RedHeart, but a bit better and the price is about the same. I've made several ponchos with that yarn that is called a one ball yarn for a scarf and had to use only 3 skeins and the fabric is much softer than Redheart.
shieldmaiden000 Did you know I’m The national spokesperson for Red Heart Yarns and this is my very own line of yarn? Chic Sheep by Marly Bird is 100% merino wool. I feel if you were to give it a try you would be pleasantly surprised at the quality.
Dear Marly Bird: I would like to make the cowl neck quite a bit looser - like, dropping down in front more than it does. Best way to do this, please ? :)
You might be surprised how big the largest size on this pattern. If it’s still not right, you will have to do the math to calculate how many stitches and rows it will take to reach the size you do want :)
Beautiful pattern! Kristin Omdahl is one of the best designers out there not to mention a truly lovely person. This poncho will be great for those of us in cool climates! I especially love the way the back joins to the front. There is no link to the pattern in the description box below but it is easily accessible on RedHeart.com. Thanks for sharing!
I swear it wasn’t there last night. I was up at 3 a.m. east coast time or so when it came through and it was great because I couldn’t sleep. I looked for the link and there wasn’t one. Either that or I’m going crazy!😂. I went over to the Red Heart site and found it. No worries either way. It is there now. Thanks for letting me know. 🤗
great work and design. How do I make a poncho that fit different people size. Should i fast get each person measurement for shoulders or are the instruction here for all sizes
Having trouble with this pattern. On row one I worked my last shell, turned, and chain four. It says to dc in 1st sc. There isn’t a sc at the end of row 1. What an I doing wrong,
Hi You state you have 36 shell designs on your 218 stitches which i have. The when turning to do the reverse back panel you state 14 shell designs then 35 chains for neck opening which would be a total of 6 shell designs and then another 14 shell design?? 14 + 14 + 6 = 34.
I really enjoy all your videos. I would like to make one comment on the chic sheep yarn. i wish it was available in stores, like Michaels, not only online. For those of us in Canada and probably other countries. Paying for shipping every time you post a new pattern is costly. Are there any plans for doing so?
Trust me, I wish it was in stores too. I've been trying for a year to get stores to pick it. Red Heart is NOT holding it back to be online only, it is a decision that the stores make. It is only now available at Hobby Lobby (only 8 colors) and it will go in 100 Joann stores at the end of this month (all 24 colors). I was also told that Michaels Canada picked it up and should be in stores up there soon. As a matter of fact, I know it is on the shelves in Canada (I don't know the name of the location) as I have gotten pictures from some of my followers of it on the shelf. if you are on Facebook, you should join the Marly's Minions group. There are a lot of Canadians in there and they can tell you where to purchase the yarn.
Right now, you can get the yarn from RedHeart.com, LoveCrochet.com, Herrschners.com and in the Hobby Lobby stores (only 8 colors), then starting Aug. 20th 2018, it will be available at the top 100 Joann stores across the USA (all 24 colors). If it does well, they will put it in more stores.
the Red Heart website was recently moved to Yarnspirations.com and is experiencing some hiccups. I recommend clearing your cache and cookies and giving it another try. In the meantime, I will let them know that this link is not working.

What a beauty! I am obsessed. Thank you Marly.
You are so welcome!
Hi Marly i love the way you used different colours in the tutorial it really helps to see where to work as in learning . Thanks
Yes totally agree ,I wish other tutorials were as clear using different yarn colours.
Just love Kristin s patterns and channel also ,I’m making her new poncho design at the moment but will make this one after so I’ve got to 2 gorgeous poncho s to wear .
Very pretty! So happy to see someone holding the crochet hook like I learned almost 50 years ago. 😁
Christina Neit Me too. Same amount of years also. 😊
Me too love holding my hook like this it's how my mother taught me in the 70s.
My grandmother taught me. I was 12 or 13, I’m 65 now. What kind of hook do you prefer ? I only use Susan Bates.
I am fine with Susan Bates or Boye hooks. I don't understand the 'ergonomic' hooks, they seem bulky to me. I haved some wooden ones, but love my old school aluminum or steel hooks. I learned to crochet when I was 6 😁
I’ve never used the bulky ones but I’ve been thinking about trying one.
Thank you thank you! I love Kristin and her patterns. I love your tutorials. I am going to be making this soon.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY .... finally red heart making videos for this for people like me that fail reading patterns lol
I'm glad you like the video. I always try to make the videos geared not only to the visual learner but teaching everybody HOW to read a pattern :)
Definitely adding this to my list. This has to feel so wonderful made with Chic Sheep! Think one in either Lipstick or Royal would be gorgeous!
I think Lipstick would be great! Or be super bold and do one in Sangria
Marly Bird, yes!!!! I say one of each. A girl can't have too many ponchos!!!!
I made 3 of your sidewalk shawls and this is on my to do list 😍

It’s beautiful. But I’d like to know if you have a pattern for the black sweater/cover up you’re wearing in the video. Thanks!
Oh you are so kind. That is a knit sweater that I purchased in a store.
Very Niiiiiiiiiice 💛❤💙💚💜
This is beautiful, but is this all for 1 size
Loving this poncho! Wanted something for ME. I love the yarn, never thought Wool could be so soft! I'm making this in the colorway Pool side.
Lesley Strom i love the way you put emphasis on “me”. It’s true as crochet artists we tend to always give away our work and forget to treat ourselves to our creations . :)
It’s a beautiful poncho... can we do a similar poncho using knitting. Thanks
marley I think you should at least start the video off wearing these creations so that we can all get a really good idea on how they look.
NB FYI I have completed this Poncho. but use much more yarn than stated. I used James c brett double knit 100g x 290mts each ball I used almost 8 balls. I would love to see your poncho. Please be sure to share with me on social media #MarlyBird ;-)
How many gram did you use?
Must do project, I should be able to use any type of yarn
Muy original Gracias 🌸🌸🌸🌸
Beautiful poncho, but 10 balls of yarn WOW!
The balls have 186 yds, and it’s a large piece :).
I would love to make it but it would cost $100!
That IS a large amount of skeins, so I would suggest a different type of yarn that holds more yardage. Jan, Ive just made this poncho but i used Sirdar Supersoft Aran - Berry Bonanza and it took 9 balls and in the UK it cost £2.99 each.
Dear Marly Bird: I would like to make the cowl neck quite a bit looser - like, dropping down in front more than it does. Best way to do this, please ? :)
It too beautiful. Plz tell me how long length for 1 year baby.
Question: could I use a different yarn? Like worsted weight #4 acrylic or cotton?
Υπέροχα!!!🌹
I need help to work up the numbers for making this in larger sizes. I want it for a 3x. Thank you!
You might be surprised how big the largest size on this pattern. If it’s still not right, you will have to do the math to calculate how many stitches and rows it will take to reach the size you do want :)

Thea Stewart I notice that Marley has included the link for the pattern in the description box. Perhaps you just overlooked it. Happy crocheting!

great work and design. How do I make a poncho that fit different people size. Should i fast get each person measurement for shoulders or are the instruction here for all sizes
It doesn't seem that she answers everyone's questions. I asked the same question to her. 😥
Bellissimo,from Italy
Thank You!
I am finding written direction on Row 4 wrong!? Should be*skip 2 dc! Not skip 2 sc
What size is 218 chains for? I’m a medium petite person and 218 chains go way past one wrist to the other. Ty
Having trouble with this pattern. On row one I worked my last shell, turned, and chain four. It says to dc in 1st sc. There isn’t a sc at the end of row 1. What an I doing wrong,
I don't have the pattern in front of me but I would follow along with what I did in the video.
I’ll go over the video and pattern again. Don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. Thanks
Hi You state you have 36 shell designs on your 218 stitches which i have. The when turning to do the reverse back panel you state 14 shell designs then 35 chains for neck opening which would be a total of 6 shell designs and then another 14 shell design?? 14 + 14 + 6 = 34.
Me having same trouble now.... i Think instead of 14 we have to make 15 Shells on both side of neck = 30 so then the pattren would be ok
Love this pattern! The yarn is a little too expensive for me though 😭
I can understand that.
Debbie, I thought the same thing so I used Sirdar Supersoft Aran - Berry Bonanza and it took 9 balls and in the UK it cost £2.99 each
Hola, puedes hacer el diseño del punto en una hoja,? me complican los inicios y las terminaciones , gracias
Por podrían traducirlo , muchas gracias bendiciones 😍

Thank you Mary. I've checked our local Michaels, but it's not here yet. I will keep checking now that I know there's hope
Sorry I meant to type Marly. Autocorrect took over

Does every row have 36 shells...some of my rows have 35 then 36 in the next ?
Am I doing this correctly?
Does ever row have 36 shells....??
How do I know how many chains to make not as wide? Starting chain here is 218.
Do you have a picture or tutorial of what your wearing. 🌹
Hello new viewer here. Did you make the item you are wearing in video
Looking for a pattern for theMartha Steward Coming Home poncho
It's on the Lion Brand yarn website or on Ravelry (same pattern as Lion Brand). I haven't made it myself but it doesn't look all that difficult!

😍😍😍
I like that poncho but i am also looking for the old fashion one that granny poncho do you know what i am talking about
If you go to bobwilson123 she has granny square poncho in every size it is very easy!!
I'm not finding the stitch count for different sizes..please help. Thank you
I need to know too
Too much chit chat. Very pretty pattern.
To each their own.
What pattern are you wearing in black?
Melanee Mortensen I was just going to ask for that pattern. It’s so pretty, isn’t it?
Elaine DePasquale Yes!!! Very eye-catching!
You all are so kind. That was a store bought sweater and I didn't think it would get so much attention because it was black. Silly me.
How many shells designs would there be in the finished length? Or what would the length be finished in cm
I do not know the number of shells precisely, but I think the cm is listed in the pattern itself.
Marly bird is your brand of yarn only sold online?

@@MarlyBird I cant find it at Hobby Lobby
How order the yarn plz help
What size is this poncho?
I dont know why but I cant seem to get this pattern to download does anybody know why?
I can’t get the pattern to download neither through the link or on redheart’s website
the Red Heart website was recently moved to Yarnspirations.com and is experiencing some hiccups. I recommend clearing your cache and cookies and giving it another try. In the meantime, I will let them know that this link is not working.
Tutorial en español por favor!!
How many yards of yarn are there in Chic Sheep ball of yarn?
186 yds
The pattern will not download, such a pretty poncho
Patricia Maltais I cant get the pattern to download either
How many chains i need for 3 years baby girl
Plz tell me the measurements of this ponchu with starting chains 218.
That information is in the pattern.
Does the pattern come in girls size 10-14?
No, it is one size fits most. You can make adjustments though as I gave you the stitch multiple of 6 + 2 for the foundation chain.
Thank but can’ Crochet at this time. 😢
This can be done in one piece...
you could make it in one piece, but the designer chose to make it in two pieces to have the weight of the item rest on the shoulder seam.
Me gustaría inscribirme pero no entiendo nada y pasa muy rápido almenos pudiera contar uno los puntos altos grscias
I'm on row 5 and I'm trying download the free pattern to start row 2 of the repeats, it doesn't seem to want to download.
The RedHeart website is down. Try again soon. Sorry.
Thank you.. I miss my redheart lol
