Baby Seal Live Birth

- Naude and Katja spent the day at Cape Cross to check up on the new seal pups. Cape Fur Seals are usually all born between the 15th of November and December every year.
After about an hour into their visit they found a large female seal just starting to enter labor. She struggled for about 10 minutes and managed to give birth to a healthy looking pup. There are more than 20 000 new pups at Cape Cross at the moment.
This was a big event for Naude and Katja as it’s the first live birth they’ve witnessed:) 🦭

Wishing this little pup a lifetime of tangle free living.
YES! Tangle Free!
And plastic-free
Yes. Pleeaase pleeaase.
Amen to that Chris!
Wish the pup will not eat a million fish during the course of her life. Apparently fish lives are less important than that of a cute doe-eyed seal.
Wow, you can really see the pain and exhaustion in her eyes, they’re barely open after it’s all done. What a hard worker.
Welcome to the Universe! Here, have a face full of sand.
🤣
Might as well get used to it from the get go.
Certainly a harbinger of things to come.
😂 LOL
Relatable.
THANK you so much.
Your channel has allowed us to see the complete Cape Fur seal cycle of life.
Very precious.
We were cheering her on too. Birth is difficult in the best of situations. She is so tired and must learn the bleat of her baby pup. Thank you for the insight to a seal birth. Almost Christmas. How utterly wonderful!
Naude, only a man could yell "Come on, push" to a female of any species while in labour lol. Beautiful experience for you. Thank you for sharing
pshhhh it's easy, just push!
I am a woman too,and say it also until the babyseal is out.and i hold my breath and push myself🤦🏻♀️🤣
Every day millions of midwifes say it too.🤣
Pshhh typical men always trying to help

Lol, I'm a guy and kept thinking "I don't think your words are helping... and she probably doesn't even speak English 😜"
I felt annoyed for the seal 😂
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, lol. Such suspense! 😄 Wishing baby and mama a good life ahead. Thanks for sharing this!❤️

Hi from 🇨🇦🇨🇦 bless all the hard working team members at ocn and bless all those beautiful new babies and mom's 💙💙💙❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💙😍❤️😍❤️❤️
Thankyou so much for filming and sharing this! 🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
Maggie: what a great momma, I wish this baby seal a happy life free of entanglements.🤗😊
What a great way to start the day. Well done momma.🇨🇦🐘💗🎄
Idk how that pup survived being draged around the hard and rocky sand for 7 minutes straight. It's like being tied to a car and the car starts driving, respect+
Wow that was just beautiful ☺️💕. Thanks Naude for sharing this precious moment.
We get elephant seals in California. The females come to the beaches to give birth and it's amazing to watch. They are cordoned off from the public so they can safely give birth far enough away for the females to feel comfortable. Otherwise, you can watch from a distance and enjoy the adorable little babies experience their first moments of life! ❤️🥰
Stressful for Me! Can't imagine how mom felt!!😂 sweet little one eh?😍🤗
they're so lovely, I cried a little
I was rootin' for the mom and hoping the baby was ok. Was not disappoint. :)
Good lord that was a heart in the mouth moment. Your first live birth and the baby is coming out he wrong way round! Huge sigh of relief when it began to breath....it may have a bruised nose though, poor thing. What a welcome to the world a face full of sand : - )

New life is wonderful..thanks for sharing 👏🏻👏🏻😎
That was fantastic! Thank you!
@ocn it’s not the placenta that broke, it was the water. The placenta comes as the last thing - otherwise the puppy will die. It was very interesting for me (as a midwife) to se a baby seal born “the wrong way”
I think all of us viewers were holding our breathe and yelling 'push'! just then...
I am so happy for her

wow, that pup was taking a beating, mom was like "get out of me". i wouldn't know but it seemed to be a difficult birth, tough little buggers.

You mentioned that she was an older female. Maybe, like humans, problems can occur in later years.
Have you ever found a dead female with a partially born pup?
No, never.
I'm pretty sure I never rooted that hard for a seal before.
I know I never have!
Samemememem
💪💪💪💪💪
Samee here!! At one point I was like lemme go help her
I know, I was so worried the pup would die. Poor mama had an awful time of it too with the upside-down birth. Their breach position.
Let’s hope it never gets tangled in human garbage
remember pick one piece of plastic up every day no matter how small it is
That's the first thing my Swiss German uncle taught me on my arrival in Switzerland at age 14! But the newer generations are not as maniac as the older ones were. Also there has been a lot of cultural mix here ever since 1970. Not meaning to sound racist or accusing anyone here.. I'm only trying to understand. I feel like one of the last dinosaures 😥

As an ex-Californian, it was ingrained in a lot of kids in the 90's to cut plastic rings, nets, and throw it away properly. I don't like in Cali anymore, but I still cut everything up, every little plastic ring I can find, and dispose of it properly. We had beach field trips where we picked up trash, for crying out loud, LOL :)

Seeing how stressed she was, imagine someone chasing them at the same time, it makes completly sence to stop recuing during this season.
Oh god people who cant you read or understand a text. You guys keep repieting the same things we all know without any context or reason too. Gosh
Makes me wonder if any of their runs were during a live-birth and they didn’t realize it. Poor little things...
They don't do any rescues where there are newborn pups as the can't swim for the first few weeks. If they followed their mothers into the ocean, they would drown.
@@valeriebolejack5957... I know
The babies cant swim so if they enter ocean too soon they drown
I kept wondering how much pain the mother was experiencing. How beautiful it was to see this birth. Thank you.
Everyone: aw so cute.

🤣🤣🤣
They always sound like goats/sheep to me
@@cheryldahl9192 I mean usually less so

Amazing that the pup survived the way she was dragging it's head around!
Well, with the robustness and flexibility that seals have, I don't think that amounted to what would be more than the equivalent of shaking up a human kid and slapping him a bit (a kid, not a baby mind you, human babies are way to fragile in comparison).
I was still cringing the whole video for the poor baby btw, even if I internally knew that probably no actual harm was being done. t-t
@@Caiofoca I caught myself cringing and holding my breath. I then gave out a huge sigh after realizing the baby and mom were well. 😉
I was little bit bit worried too, but I've seen worse in the nature (or to better say on the internet).
There is a bird species, which nest on cliffs and newly hatched chicks jumps off the freaking high cliff. They land on rocks and (some of them) magically survive.
@@janhavel8208 Yes, I have seen those! In one of those videos the cliff was like 700 ft high!! Did you know that some Canadian Geese do the same. This past nesting season I watched goslings jump from a 70 ft nest up in a tree (it was an eagle nest the year before). This was in Iowa, I do believe it was called "Two Harbor" if you would like to watch it. Volunteers went out to make sure all the gosling made it to mom and dad. I do believe only one didn't survive the fall because it got stuck in the tree. Quite a feat for those goslings of all species! 👍
@@janhavel8208 I apologize it is "Decorah Nest" in Iowa. 👍 I watch so many of them it gets confusing lol.
I could feel her pain and sense her delight and pride with her new little life..I’m so happy for her that her little pup was alive and well. Very tense viewing that birth.
It is probably brain damaged by than!
I was a bit concerned too! A breach birth for a seal, and his face was being pounded on the sand! Poor baby!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 they can just name the baby Sandy.
Lol, how about Bonkers for the name.
Seals are the cutest animals. Thank you all so much. What y'all do is absolutely incredible.
Poor kid has a skinned up nose and he hasn't even made it to the playground yet. Name him "Rudolph."🎄
Thank you, Naude. And the Circle of Life goes 'round!.. 🌈
😅
Hahaha that's a good one 😂😂😂😉👍
Hehehe... Born to be tough
😂😂😂🔴
Nature is simply amazing! Just the fact that hundreds of pups can be born in the same area and will soon after start running off and playing together, and their moms all look just alike, they know from birth which mom is theirs when they're done playing and go back to their moms to rest and feed. To me, that is simply amazing!
Calvin: They have a keen sense of smell.
That was both excrutiating and wonderful to see! It was clear that the momma was experiencing surging labor pains, and instinctively turning in circles to help push the baby out. No midwives among the seals! And no sanitized delivery rooms! It was thrilling to finally see the baby giving its first bleats. We were all deeply moved to see another pup enter this world. Thank you for sharing this!
Mark: Protons are very effective at killing germs.
There were reports in 2020 that in the empty cruise ships SARS2 virus samples remained viable for 17 days inside with no people there to be hosts. Those who went in to check the cruise ship interior conditions were shocked at the samples they took being viable in the lab. They did say that it was doubtful that those virus samples had enough strength to cause infection though.
The reports on how to 'kill' SARS2 stated that the virus was incapable of infecting anyone after 10 minutes in direct sunlight. (Technically, viruses are not alive because they have no ability to reproduce out of host cells, so the distinction is whether they have the strength to invade a living cell or not.)
Sun heated sand is also a fairly good disinfectant because if heat and salt. Protons in direct sunlight have enough wallop to disable many germs, killing bacteria and disrupting virus chemistry.
I can see why getting born flippers first would be a benifit with all the wiggling and moving mummas doing to try get bub out.
I've had 4 (kids, not seals)...I empathized and pushed with her!! Great job mom!! ❤
Ive never had kids personally. I too pushed...

I’m so addicted to your videos! How many seal rescues can I watch and stay interested. Infinite it seems. More birth videos can never bore me either. I like the interesting fun fact about seals usually being born fins first. Probably 1/2 of what I know about these seals come from you. I say these seals because there are probably different kinds, like penguins? I haven’t the time to do my own research at the moment. Watching your videos is my relaxing time out.
