*Drew talking about her childhood just makes you realize why she is as humble and strong as she is!! I had a tough childhood and my mom always taught me to be strong and look at the positive!! You don't understand it as much as you do when your older!! You learn to appreciate what you learn from your struggles and the strength it gives you!! You either let hard times get you down or, you learn and let it strengthen you to be and do better!!*
I'm glad she said that at the end about she's never gonna stop looking for the positive and I'm glad you also said this too because it enlightens me and I feel really fresh and renewed after watching this like as if I was at my laundry mat 25 years ago in my home town of Imperial beach I feel like a teenager after watching this
Yes! I didn't have a tough childhood, but my daughter did growing up with a single mom barely making ends meet. She used to ask me why we had to have it so tough and her cousins could break a toy and have a brand new one that same day. I always felt bad that she couldn't always have things she wanted even as a birthday or Christmas present. Later on, when she went off to college she actually thanked me for it all, for being around more rather than working harder to give her things. She still tells me that she feels she learned a lot more about life, budgeting, and being responsible than had I been more well off.
@@notadumbblond3 wow, your daughter got it, and what a wonderful thing for her to say to you. You had to be so proud of yourself for becoming the person you were, and appreciating the fact that your daughter saw how hard you worked to give her what you could, and in her case, you worked hard to be a mom who was there for her. You may not have been able to buy her things, but your presence was worth so much more. I was a single mom, raising a daughter as well. At least I knew she could count on me, if nothing else.💕

@@siriuslili hmm… nothing has been “spoken” in this comment thread. The op TYPED something and that generally takes some thought. Maybe you should’ve thought a bit more about what you were typing :)
The sign of a healthy person is how Drew was able to pull herself out of her sad mood in the beginning. (“I grew up lonely but now my house is like Grand Central”). And how she understands her mom better now. That’s real healing & progress.
Kudos to Drew for saving herself and keeping herself alive. Revisiting places and her reflections. Her life is miracle, I am so glad to see her alive. A lot of people went through what she did and they aren't alive today. Bless her. If Britney wants to do an interview with a host, she should pick Drew because she gets it.
This is why Drew is beautiful inside and out. She goes into her past and draws out the lessons she's learned, not pointing the finger of blame, and she's thankful for how endurance has given her the strenghth to be who was to become, a woman first, a loving mother, a gifted and joyful human being. I don't know her personally but I can spot a genuine soul.
Drew is a rarity in Hollywood. She's genuine and 100% unpretentious. Please do more tours of Los Angeles, this was such an awesome segment of your show!
Drew seems to be one of the few celebrities that is actually grounded and approachable. She seems like the kind of person that would welcome a fan to speak to her unlike a lot of celebs that demand their fans don't approach them or even look at or speak to them! She's gone through a lot in her life which might explain why she's so down to earth and grounded. She seems to have a beautiful spirit.
I will forever be a fan of Drew. Her endlessly sunny disposition despite all the darkness she grew up in and around is so inspiring. Her positivity is so contagious and it is no wonder that everyone who speaks about her has nothing but amazing things to say. Such a talent and such a vibrant personality, and just such a generous and caring soul. It is so obvious that her warm energy welcomes everyone in and makes them feel comfortable. Thank you thank you thank you for constantly being vulnerable and honest, Drew, you will never know how much you've helped me grow myself.
Beautifully and perfectly said! It’s like you took the words right out of my mouth. I remember reading her book in the early 90’s, and as a teen who was struggling with alcohol and drugs. Her story truly inspired me! Love her!
@@melaniebaldwin7594 This woman has lived many lives it seems and yet somehow you'd never know the horrible pain she endured because she treats everyone with such kindness. I feel like younger people or just people who don't know her story would be shocked to find out all she's been through. I am so happy that Drew has had a positive impact on both of our lives, and many, many others. She is the living embodiment of letting your experiences shape you for the better and I really hope I can meet her in person or just face to face one day to let her know what she means to me, to all of us once lost little girls.
Absolutely love this. Don't get why they didn't make a bigger deal of showing people this... and its not on instagram so it's less share-able... its really powerful and sweet and funny, just like Drew.
OMG You said it perfectly! I was going to make a comment but after reading yours I was like... Well that is exactly what I was thinking and feeling! I admit I was misty eyed at the end too and was even not wanting it to end. Drew is an amazing overcomer and equally talented too! A beautiful soul who is open to taking us on the journey with her and hoping we all collectively learn and grow together! Such a bright light!
It’s also so interesting. I read both of her books and she mentions these places but she talks about them more light heartedly like she didn’t have such painful memories at them this shows a different side and some of the darkness she’s lived through.
I wanna hug her, shes so down to earth, shes been in the spotlight for so long but never let it go to her head and become lost in it, shes so humble and gives back, such a sweetheart
My sister was there in the 80s for substance abuse. And my stepfather also for alcohol detoxing. My sister jumped that exact wall behind hey in the 80s.
You tend to forget Drew’s rough childhood because of her bubbly, sweet nature so it’s nice to see her reflect on the bad times and it’s those bad times that made her stronger and healthy and a happier person
Thanks Drew unfortunately can relate to a messed up childhood didnt have a stable home til i moved in with my husband. Now i struggle in a different have a special kid who has brain damage and is austic everyday is hard.
I love her vulnerability so much. When she’s looking at her childhood home with tears and talking about her loneliness, it made me look at her performance in Grey Gardens with even more admiration because that movie was probably therapeutic yet very hard for her to delve back into those emotions again. She’s always looking to examine her emotions and improve herself, such a beautiful person.
This touched me in a way I wasn't prepared for....I had a terrible childhood and real inner struggles in my 20's and 30's but I came out of the other side happy, healthy and whole. My past doesn't make me bitter, my present makes me joyful. Thank you for reminding me how lucky I am.
"...but i will never lose sight of this part of my story." I feel so much respect for her for what she's been through and for the wonderfull person she become after all that.
Her story must be shown to a bigger audience-anyone who has teens, who is going through struggles which we all do because it’s just life should watch this…she’s so honest and inspiring. I love her!
Imagine hearing the strangest sound you ever heard and when you go out to investigate you find Drew Barrymore standing outside your home mimicking the sound of a horny cat.
She is living proof of a powerful, pure soul. To have gone through so much and still see those challenges as just passages. No hate, no revenge, just the desire and will to live in peace with her past. I wish everyone could do that. peace
I planted those trees that line Drew's former street 30 years ago with an organization called "Tree People". Drew is right the neighborhood has greatly improved and is highly coveted now with recent homes selling between 1.5 and 1.8 million. 😀😀😀
I was about 14 years old when I read Drew's autobiography and I've felt a connection with her ever since... But nothing could have ever made me feel more connected to her than her sentiment about books, just then. Even if I didn't know her life story, that would have given it away, enough: I see your heart, Drew. Only a true reader knows this kind of reverence, and recognizes it for what it is. The most blissful, magical safe space. Reading has saved me, too. So, so many times.
Reading was one of my great escapes during my rough childhood as well. Just got Drew’s book today, audible. Can’t wait. I try to do inner child guided meditations. It helps. We need to work on healing ourselves because those wounds run deep. Sending love to all of you that can relate.
This hit home for me, being a 16 year old kid struggling trying to do it by myself eventually ending up in a institution. (Knowing your story, I thought of you alot during my hardships. Always thinking 'If drew made it through hers, I can make it through mine') I never thought I'd be happy or get better but I did, I found out how strong I was and who I was in those years of struggle. I'm 25 now, engaged to my girlfriend and living near the beach. It's not perfect, sometimes I slip and fall back to old ways but it's so much better than it was.
I'm in tears. I don't think she knows how being so open and vulnerable can help so many people watching. This is real life. We all go through things and even if we have not been through the same exact thing we all do have feeling we can relate with such as a lonely period in our life, or having a broken relationship with a family member. She is an inspiration for many, I am sure.
Oh, Drew, could we possibly love you any more than we already do!? Thank you for this moving and funny and vulnerable tour. I feel uplifted by your honesty and your love of life.
Drew really added something missing in show business. Genuineness, being natural, and just her natural self. After everything, this is a real breath of fresh air.
She seems like the most likeable, relatable and down to earth rich/famous person. She's such an abnormal life and seems more grounded than most "normal" people I know irl.
I’m a 25 year old woman with end stage kidney failure.. my life has been so relatable to Drew’s and she has no idea how much her episodes like this keep me going . Truly. Much love
What’s really sad is when we’ve gotten to our 40s and the pain can still be brought up by just a single word or a look or a memory that decides to drop by for a quick little visit. I definitely treat my adult children like they’re a gift from above, every day, I always tell them how much they mean to me because I know what it feels like to feel unloved and unwanted.
This segment inspires me that one day I will look back at all the hardships I've had to endure and will be able to be grateful to have made it on the other side. Drew is everything
You will. And you will be amazed at what you went through in order to come through. Keep going. It is so worth it. And isn't Drew just incredible? An absolute star: cool, warm and brilliant.
@@joy6085 You have no idea how much your kindness means to me. This year has been the worst year of my life and I've had literally no one I can talk to for words of encouragement. I am determined to get through this dark chapter and onto brighter days, no matter what it takes. YES, I absolutely agree, I find her personality so comforting. She's been through so much in her life, but hasn't let it bring her down and you can tell she's a real authentic person who isn't afraid to bare her soul. I admire that so much.
This was actually DURING STARDOM for her. She began very young. One of her biggest movies(E.T), was when she was around 7. By the time she lived on her own and was emancipated, she had already gone to rehab for substance abuse. She has TRULY gone through IT!😢
She was famous by 7 though. ET made her famous in 1982 when she was 6 or 7. She even hosted SNL at 7 years old. This is all happened while she was famous.
Shes so right when you have a traumatic childhood you think you have gone through the worst of the worst but when you have your own kids you live your emotions through them you feel so much more than you ever felt for yourself I'm glad Drew is healing slowly but surely that's a gift also from your kids there is healing and joy aswell as heartache
Watching Drew in the bookstore made me kind of emotional because when I was a kid, I read her book…over and over. Little Girl Lost changed my life. I was a really rebellious kid and it just changed my whole perspective. If not for that book, I may not have had a relationship with my mom before she died. Beautiful segment.
So inspiring. Vulnerable and real. I like that she can talk about her painful past without living there in her mind. She can separate the past from the present and acknowledge the distance between the two.
“I learn to drive at Sophia Loren’s ranch…” Oh my god! It’s interesting how I’m usually annoyed by celebrities dropping names but it’s always interesting with Drew cause no one had a childhood like her. For better or worse.
Drew is the real deal. Raw vulnerability and sincerity. It can bring so much healing and understanding to others. Anytime I post something vulnerable on social media I feel so naked and exposed. But I'm learning to be brave and share my own journey of growth and healing. Love you Drew!! 💜
She’s so real…we need more of this…people think all the glamorous things that they see came without sacrifice. Drew is a perfect example of dedication, sacrifice and don’t give up!!!!
I stopped by my childhood home and the current owner came out and threatened to call the police because I took a photo of the house from across the street. I can’t imagine showing up with a film crew to a house. This was super powerful. Thanks Drew for being willing to make yourself vulnerable to take us on this “tour” of your past.
I stopped by my childhood home a few years ago (a "complex" of five tiny cottage apartments in a very poor area). One of the current residents asked if I wanted to buy the place. Apparently the owner wasn't a good landlord, and I guess the resident thought I was wealthy because the car I drove was only six years old and had no visible rust...
Love Drew's transparency in this. There's power in vulnerability and by sharing we touch others with our stories of life's trials and tribulations. Resilience♥
OMG I took over Drew’s apartment where she lived in when she was 14 years old. She moved out and left a lot of kitchen and personal items, which I donated to Goodwill. Laura Flynn Boyle lived upstairs and she was dating Mark Walberg who used to park his Porsche in my parking space. I loved that apartment and it helped me settle after my divorce and before I moved to Europe to join the United Nations.
Ohhh God… I’m a mother and I can’t imagine a 14 yrs old girl living alone. But she managed to make her life better no matter what. I love Drew. She is amazing, sweet, clever. She deserves all the good things in life ❤️
This is why Drew is so special, she’s honest about her past and who she is, it makes all of her guests feel welcomed enough to also be themselves. I think of Ellen’s show and how uncomfortable she can make people just for the fun of it 😣 keep being you Drew!
Actually, it doesn’t take much to be honest about ones “checkered past” We live in a culture that elevates childhood trauma to Purple Heart status and the overcoming of addictions as social currency. This is ever more true in Hollywood. I like Drew just fine, but c’mon…this is her schtick. All of this gushing over her alleged “authenticity” is so ridiculous.
This wonderful person is so real. She went through a lot when she was a child. She’s kinda one of the last Mohicans from her family. I never hear of any other relatives. She’s so humble and grateful for where she’s at now.
Drew is such a beautiful soul! I've always admired her for being open and transparent. She is as real as they come! She has a purpose in life, and I honestly believe this is why she's standing tall today. I will always support her. We love you, Drew! ❤😊
Watching Drew talk and act natural is like observing the human experience of emotional indulgence. She's such a sweet, silly, wonderful, pretty goofball. 💯💜
she is one of those truly special and unique people that walk this earth. I'm only a few years younger than her so she's been a part of my life since we were both little girls. I often got compared to her as well and told I looked like her! Some people even used to call me Drew. She's just such a sweet, genuine, and kind person. nothing fake about her and so much light shines out of her
What scares me is that there is sooo much going on inside our children’s heads that don’t show up on the outside and we as parents have absolutely no clue to the damage that could be percolating inside their minds.
@@JazzyB9481 it's not that simple. You have to make yourself a safe person for your kids to talk to if you ever want them to actually share the deep things in their head. By the time I was in middle school I knew I couldn't talk to my mom about the things I was thinking, because there was so much judgement and shaming if I didn't behave exactly the way she wanted me to. By the time I was in high school I was leading two different lives - the one she saw, and the one my friends saw. There were so many things I was dealing with as a teenager that she will probably never know about, because by the time I was dealing with those things I knew the only true support system I had was my friends, because going to my mom meant more judgment, more shame, and likely losing privileges over stupid things. So yeah, theoretically the answer is "talk to them", but that only works if prior to that you've made yourself someone they can feel safe telling the truth to. Otherwise you're just going to get "I'm fine, I'm okay".
The honest truth about growing up and becoming an adult...it's not easy, and facing our past often can be the hardest part. Thanks for sharing your story.
When Drew got teary eyed about wishing/fantasizing about having a more bonding mother daughter dinner experience made me want to just give her a huge hug and let her know she is not alone in this…

@@libertygiveme1987 In 1984 my parents committed me when I was 14 years old because they wanted to go overseas and I couldn’t be taken out of school. It was easier for them to pay $3,500 a day to have me institutionalized for nine months. Why do I know the cost? Because my Mom threw it in my face for years, leaving out the part about them using a rehab as a babysitter. I got myself a child advocacy attorney and got myself out of there, then I left home and never went back. Sometimes you have to rescue yourself because nobody else is willing to

@@notadumbblond3 You see it so differently when your a child! I used to feel bad bc I didn't have stylish clothes and I couldn't afford a lot! I was jealous of the kids that had a lot more! But while I was jealous and I got picked on for how I dressed, I would never give my mom a hard time bc I never wanted her to hurt bc I felt that way!!
@@notadumbblond3 and your right ... time with your kiddos is absolutely so much more important than giving them material things!! There's nothing more important to me than my son learning how to care about others and behave the right way and spending a lot of time with them definitely helps when you teach them and they learn from your behavior!! My son has the biggest heart and I love it!!
Love that Drew absolutely respected the new owner's privacy, but still explained why it was important to her - so real. And thank you for respecting others' privacy! and keeping it real!
Sometimes people want to go inside too and the new occupants do not mind.
So real? What? And what was the other option? Walking into their house uninvited? Do people ever think before they speak?
@@siriuslili hmm… nothing has been “spoken” in this comment thread. The op TYPED something and that generally takes some thought. Maybe you should’ve thought a bit more about what you were typing :)
“i don’t have to be lonely anymore” god my heart. drew us just such a light.
"I can't erase my lifes problems, nor do I want to. But stains they have got to go." beautiful words spoken.
The sign of a healthy person is how Drew was able to pull herself out of her sad mood in the beginning. (“I grew up lonely but now my house is like Grand Central”). And how she understands her mom better now. That’s real healing & progress.

I doubt her daughters will ever fully comprehend how insanely amazing their mother is. I mean even we can’t. She’s a National treasure. Truly!
I love how emotional Drew is overall as a person. It shows she's sentimental and has a heart. She's humbled for sure. She's a sweetheart...
That's not sincere emotion, dear. That's called histronics and over the top drama fake.
@@mlduree Lmfao! Mkay...
This is a very beautiful comment. Love the way you appreciate her expression of emotions.
"That's an underrated emotion: relief!" Yes, Drew! It doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. x
Amen to that⚡♥♥♥

So exactly. Well said 👏

Drew is a rarity in Hollywood. She's genuine and 100% unpretentious.
Please do more tours of Los Angeles, this was such an awesome segment of your show!
She WORKED for what she has
@@skypeters3034 She absolutely did (and for 40 years at this point).

Just share it on Facebook and Twitter.
She should do this for other celebs take them to their old homes schools etc
I was taught that at three years old. I was being used as a target for assassins from all over the world and would always be until I was dead

My sister was there in the 80s for substance abuse.
And my stepfather also for alcohol detoxing. My sister jumped that exact wall behind hey in the 80s.
I'm so sorry for what you went through. This hadvto be horrible
You tend to forget Drew’s rough childhood because of her bubbly, sweet nature so it’s nice to see her reflect on the bad times and it’s those bad times that made her stronger and healthy and a happier person
Drew has such a powerful and positive message for anyone struggling.
Yes she does...🧡😢🧡

Thanks Drew unfortunately can relate to a messed up childhood didnt have a stable home til i moved in with my husband. Now i struggle in a different have a special kid who has brain damage and is austic everyday is hard.
She is the epitome of true humbleness and gratitude. I've always loved and respected her not just as an actress but as a person because she is REAL.
Very cool
ugh that movie made me cry so much 😭
This touched me in a way I wasn't prepared for....I had a terrible childhood and real inner struggles in my 20's and 30's but I came out of the other side happy, healthy and whole. My past doesn't make me bitter, my present makes me joyful. Thank you for reminding me how lucky I am.

“That was the soundtrack to this apartment” 😆 her sense of humor is everything
I was about 14 years old when I read Drew's autobiography and I've felt a connection with her ever since...
But nothing could have ever made me feel more connected to her than her sentiment about books, just then. Even if I didn't know her life story, that would have given it away, enough: I see your heart, Drew. Only a true reader knows this kind of reverence, and recognizes it for what it is. The most blissful, magical safe space.
Reading has saved me, too. So, so many times.
Now, I'm going to read her book. The connection to books is real. Books become our friends during times of growth. 📖📚📙
I read that book in the 90s when I was 15 and it has such an impact on me too.
Reading was one of my great escapes during my rough childhood as well. Just got Drew’s book today, audible. Can’t wait. I try to do inner child guided meditations. It helps. We need to work on healing ourselves because those wounds run deep. Sending love to all of you that can relate.
I read that too!!
I'd get so buried in the V.C. Andrews sagas...
I don't think I could love and admire this woman any more. It's truly wonderful to see her light up the world. Thank you Drew.

Most real, not realsst!
This hit home for me, being a 16 year old kid struggling trying to do it by myself
eventually ending up in a institution.
Wow! I’m so happy that you’ve found peace and happiness in your life ❤️ what a beautiful story !!

She's lived such an incredible life. I could listen to her talk for hours.
Oh, Drew, could we possibly love you any more than we already do!? Thank you for this moving and funny and vulnerable tour. I feel uplifted by your honesty and your love of life.

Omg I love everything Drew and the fact she had dinner with Vonnegut who ate baked beans and vodka is everything!
Truly. Much love

I’m so glad Drew shared this part of her life.
Her autobiography is amazing. It goes over all the craziness that was. It's one of my favorite books of all time.
I’m such a fan of Drew, she is so down to earth. She is a survivor, and I am so happy she is okay.
Drew is part of Hollywood royalty, I’m glad she’s showing us her life before stardom
“I don’t have to be lonely anymore” I felt that surge deep into my soul”😮💨
Imagine just looking out of your window and seeing Drew Barrymore standing there behind your gate staring, crying and talking to herself.

I have newfound respect for Drew after hearing her story. Not many can pull themselves thru something like the and come out on the other side!
So inspiring. Vulnerable and real. I like that she can talk about her painful past without living there in her mind. She can separate the past from the present and acknowledge the distance between the two.
Drew is such a sweet, sweet person. I’m so happy for all the success she’s had, it really seems like she deserved it
“I learn to drive at Sophia Loren’s ranch…” Oh my god!

Everytime I see Drew as an adult she's so well put together I forget how hard she had it growing up, I love Drew she's strong and a wonderful person.
What an overreaction. Sorry you didn't have a better experience while there!

What scares me is that there is sooo much going on inside our children’s heads that don’t show up on the outside and we as parents have absolutely no clue to the damage that could be percolating inside their minds.
This is exactly what keeps me up at night. My biggest fear, worry, and heavy weight. Ugh.
Yeah you’re right. The only thing we can do is be gentle and patient with them, and hope that we’re a safe enough space for them to share that with us
You can always....talk to them
@@JazzyB9481 it's not that simple.
