169$ is an outstanding value. I really appreciate the premium feel of the TX16S max pro with the aluminium faceplate, switch gear, and color touchscreen display. If they were to do a premium full size version down the line with more switch channels in this design language I would have to seriously consider it.

Pre-ordered today, this is everything I want in an FPV radio and more. Built-in antennas and foldable sticks are a massive win, and Gemini ELRS is just the cherry on the top. Yes, some are complaining about the lack of a touch screen, but it's hard to argue at this price point.
Radiomaster has outsmarted himself this time. I have a boxer, TX 16, pocket, but I'm not sure I need it )) Now if radiomaster could make the switch modules replaceable, where everyone could find the right one for themselves, that would be a truly suitable option.

There are some drawbacks to the combined 3D magnetometer approach they're using here (just like with TBS Tango 2/Mambo): - Lower sample rate, those won't work at 500/1000hz and maybe not even at full 250hz (edit: some other reviews mention it's 1000hz/12 bit res, so that's not a problem with Radiomaster, props to them for not skimming on the sensors). - More calibration issues, including temperature drift - Complicated calibration procedure, because the two axes are not independent and need to be separated without affecting linearity
I immediately worried too. But looking at the implementation, it looks pretty good. Would be curious to see the specs on the sensor. But I don't think it was mentioned in the video.
@ if anyone is going to look at chip markings under microscope, it’s gonna be Mads. Alternatively, once their fork is mainlined you can see which driver EdgeTX uses

Great overview. I'm glad to see them switch to nano modules on a medium sized radio. The gimbal mounting, a possible failure point, looks reassuringly solid. I'd like to see a Zorro-like equivalent, but this looks fantastic.
This is the first small radio that I actually like since the TX16S first came out.... The easier to see Display was the first thing that caught my eye. RadioMaster have outdone themselves....👍
If i didn't already have my boxer that I splurged on AG01 gimbals for, i would grab one of these in a heart beat. I may anyway. This really does look like a fantastic piece of gear. Throw on a 4in1 multi module underneath for old D8 tiny whoops and it does everything!
Radiomaster needs to add the 2 Extra SMA antennas and include them in this build. That can enabled without going through the tear down hassle to use aftermarket antennas. Also setup the 2 Position Arm switch on the left side like the Radiomaster Boxer. And Offer CNC Upgrade for the plastic buttons for all Metal ones. Then we can say this is a NICE 📻 by Radiomaster!!🤔
Wish Radiomaster would start doing full color OLED screens. I know we don't really need it for flying FPV quads, but it definitely makes it easier to navigate when changing settings
Colour OLED screens of this size are very expensive, they could use a LCD like the one in the TX16 but there is the issue of visibility under sunlight.
Not having the color screen is a HUGE part of why I bought a TBS Mambo. The color screen is murder on battery. I like the looks / ergo of this radio over the Boxer and may pick one of these up vs the Ranger ELRS module in the Mambo I'm using today.
The non-latching switches are actually great for DLF. I was waiting for a radio with non-latching switch on the left shoulder snd here it is. I'm overwhelmed by the options though. We'll see. Amazing feature set and the quality seems insane for this price.
That's outstanding. I use and have been very happy with the pocket but this is a great update and I'm very tempted. The fold down sticks is a great feature and is probably what pushed me from like to want.
I have 2 thoughts , great review as always anyway : 1) wireless gimbal sensors performance and stability expecially with elrs high frequency 2.4ghz modes ( 500/1000 hz ) 2) 900mhz antenna size, seems too small to me to be a good performance antenna My main concern is the gimbals sensor , I have it from years in my tango and It’s not super stable , ambient temperature influences it a lot
I keep only 2, a primary and a backup. 2 is 1, 1 is none philosophy. Anything more is silly in my opinion. Having said all that, I do get basically every product that comes out to test and I give away the extras to new people getting into the hobby. So just do that. I have a few of my friends that also do this, but they sell stuff, not give away... This is also a viable option if funds are low.
I would have preferred to see the hall sensor on a separate pcb, with that being said, I need to make a starter gift kit with a whoop and my Zorro so I "need" to upgrade to this, looks amazing
I love advancements and adjustability but I don’t get something…we are always limited by the video feed right?. If you are using dji, would this really out perform simply using their remote for the upcoming O4 or current O3? For the O3, my boxer radio at 150hz can’t keep up with the video signal at points. Dji remote feels so cheap and plastic and it’s overpriced lol…I just don’t fully understand the performance benefit of using anything other than their remote (besides keeping control if the video feed fails). You basically covered all the points. If you fly exclusively DJI in normal conditions, and can tolerate their controllers. You are good to go. I however fly every video system, and am picky and highly modify my transmitters so I have no other choice.
There is one big problem, no gold gimbals like AG01 has. I will stick with my golden Boxer, although the GX12 is very tempting with its foldable antennas and gimbal sticks. :) Thank you for the detailed review.
I've got mine today. I can tell you this radio is awsome. I was considering Boxer Crush with AG01 since price is similar, but I do not regeret my choice. Gimbals are really solid and veeery smooth. I'm a thumb pilot, so prefer butter gimbals. I have been flying on Taranis with hall gimbals many years and now I'm wondedring how could I fly with this 😆
I really believe that the radio Master could put a built in Gemini on the boxer. But this GX14 will become the new king of radios. Now I wonder if there's a LED option for the gimbals
If it had and internal Multiprotocol Module, i would definitely buy. Its just hard to justify buying this when I have a tango 2 and a TX12. I run crossfire for FPV and Spektrum etc. for line-of-sight flying models.
Higher BOM with a touchscreen (they need a more expensive MCU and external SRAM for framebuffer to support a higher res display). It's also very unnecessary on a remote that you only use for FPV quads. Now if you wanted to also use it with Ardupilot, large screen is almost a must for all those lua scripts.
In order for a touch screen to work, it would been to be a much larger screen. That in turn would make the radio much larger. I have found with Ardupilot, on my planes and quads that I don't play with the screen really that much. I keep that radio settings the same for my models and make the adjustments to my planes so that I don't have to change models every time on the radio. I have one radio configuration for all quads and one configuration for all planes. I thought a touch screen would be great but I just don't use it that much.

The only problem with nomad is that you have to switch the Gemini mode each time you change the drone you're flying depending on the receiver it got. Elrs should make a profiles and associate it with id number. This way I could fly my lr 8 inch on gemeny x 2.4+900mhz then my small 3 inch with standard elrs 2.4ghz without having to go change several settings on elrs lua

Nice radio, sad it does not have color screen and user friendly/flexible interface that comes with color touch screens. I fly mostly line of sight so I look to radio screen quite often. Also I tend to use PC companion for configuration less and less, and configure my planes via on radio screen more and more. And you have quite a lot to configure for a good glider or plane/jet. Its not a setup like your average FPV quad, where you have simple pass through gimbals without any mixing and two switches.
T15 its great option but as everyone focus only on FPV like nothing else exists. For complicated gliders or planes no enough switches and i will love to have 2 pots or sliders on shoulders. GX12 its nice but color screen and these 2 front buttons as switches will be great. On GX12 its plenty space cor nice colour OLED just move radiomaster logo more down and GX12 on power butto or in corner top of the gimbal.
It looks like a great radio, but I'll wait for the full size color screen version, which I believe will come soon! For now will stick with my T15 and Nomad module!
If I wanted to replace my commando 8 elrs radio v2 , that's bound to my bnf iflight rig would it be a case of just binding this to the rx and away I go so to speak?
So can ELRS Gemini X achieve more Range than a 1W-2W Crossfire TX Module? I have both Crossfire & ELRS 2.4GH, and they both give me more Range than I need for my FPV Drone. However I'm building an FPV Wing right now and I'm undecided to just use my Crossfire TX and RX in that.. If it has more Range that would be a nice bonus! This is a beautiful TX and I think I might get this instead of a Boxer Max actually. Its like the Jumper T15 I always wanted lol.. To me the color screen is nice but I'm fine with the B&W screen, especially an OLED like my Tango2 which is more than enough honestly..
I thought OLEDs don't need power to display black pixels, thus the reason the display is inverted here. I don't think it will impact battery performance much
@@professorbiohazard4271 It still uses a lot more power than an LCD with the backlight off. I doubt it will be an issue with a 5AH battery though. Most of the power draw will be from the dual 1W radios.
@jasonhurdlow6607 not those... Nick Burns pointed out threaded brass inserts on the very bottom face of the case. (The one that no longer has a USB connection)
It's fine for me and I'm a hybrid, it's no different to the zorro and no one complained on that. There is plenty of space between the switches if you have to put your fingers there. We are meant to be skilled pilots so accidental movement seems unlikely
Great review and perfect timing for me. Does it look easy to change gimbals to mode 1 ? This will be my first transmitter and most here use the right side for throttle.
Is it possible to download the stock ELRS Firmware for this Radio, and publish it somewhere? I tried to upload the Nomad Firmware because here I need 2.4/868 instead of 915MHz, but it didn't work. But the biggest stupidity was to not download the original firmware before 😫
fffff now i rly need to consider if ill stay witch crsf and my tx16 and spend the money for a set of ag01 or if il switch to elrs and get this one that already has cnc gimbals
Someone needs to tell Radiomaster about gimbal tilt. In their current radios I think it is possible to add it with small changes to the gimbal designs, but these GX12 gimbals just look impossible to tilt. A real pity, because this radio looks freaking amazing otherwise.
@@jasonhurdlow6607 It allows one to orient the gimbals so that their axes' motion matches the geometry of your thumb's movement. When looking at your handset imagine being able to rotate the right gimbal a few degrees counter-clockwise, and the left gimbal a few degrees clockwise. Your thumbs naturally connect to the gimbal stick at an obtuse angle relative to the vertical and horizontal planes. Hope that makes sense - it's easier to explain visually. Some Jeti, Jumper, and Multiplex radios have it.
I wish all the drone people would stop saying "fullmetal cnc" cnc has nothing to do with the gimbals. The machines that made them are CNC machines, ok great, but that has no impact on the gimbals. They are all aluminum gimbals, thats the important part, it doesnt matter if they were made on manual machines (they were not) or cnc as long as the tolerances are hit. Its just such a silly buzzword all the drone youtubers say, drives me nuts as a hobby machinist.
@MadRC yeah I know it's the manufacturers, this was in no way an attack against you, it's every single reviewer. It's just kind of a silly thing, (almost)everything that is mass produced is cnc, including the plastic gimbals, those are also made using cnc. I really enjoy your videos, very refreshing to watch your technical videos and you just get to the nitty gritty with no fluff.
Well, 💩. I just ordered the freakin Gemini module for my TX16S. I like the size, capabilities and stock esthetics of this radio a lot more. Looks like I may be buying another radio

It's fine for me and I'm a hybrid, it's no different to the zorro and no one complained on that.
There is plenty of space between the switches if you have to put your fingers there.
We are meant to be skilled pilots so accidental movement seems unlikely

Is it possible to download the stock ELRS Firmware for this Radio, and publish it somewhere? I tried to upload the Nomad Firmware because here I need 2.4/868 instead of 915MHz, but it didn't work. But the biggest stupidity was to not download the original firmware before 😫

Low band will genenreally always been perform better than 2.4ghz. In the past this was at the expense of the higher rates but not now.
fffff now i rly need to consider if ill stay witch crsf and my tx16 and spend the money for a set of ag01 or if il switch to elrs and get this one that already has cnc gimbals

Someone needs to tell Radiomaster about gimbal tilt. In their current radios I think it is possible to add it with small changes to the gimbal designs, but these GX12 gimbals just look impossible to tilt. A real pity, because this radio looks freaking amazing otherwise.
I've been using radios for a long time and never heard of gimbal tilt. What is it? And why do I want it?
@@jasonhurdlow6607 It allows one to orient the gimbals so that their axes' motion matches the geometry of your thumb's movement. When looking at your handset imagine being able to rotate the right gimbal a few degrees counter-clockwise, and the left gimbal a few degrees clockwise. Your thumbs naturally connect to the gimbal stick at an obtuse angle relative to the vertical and horizontal planes. Hope that makes sense - it's easier to explain visually. Some Jeti, Jumper, and Multiplex radios have it.
@aracrg I "pinch", it's more precise and separates the axes better. So this wouldn't matter to me. But thanks for the explanation.

I wish all the drone people would stop saying "fullmetal cnc" cnc has nothing to do with the gimbals. The machines that made them are CNC machines, ok great, but that has no impact on the gimbals. They are all aluminum gimbals, thats the important part, it doesnt matter if they were made on manual machines (they were not) or cnc as long as the tolerances are hit. Its just such a silly buzzword all the drone youtubers say, drives me nuts as a hobby machinist.
It's the wording the manufacturer uses. Sorry if it does not suite your preference. I get it but it's now a term used.
@MadRC yeah I know it's the manufacturers, this was in no way an attack against you, it's every single reviewer. It's just kind of a silly thing, (almost)everything that is mass produced is cnc, including the plastic gimbals, those are also made using cnc. I really enjoy your videos, very refreshing to watch your technical videos and you just get to the nitty gritty with no fluff.
For a lot of people, CNC implies that it was cut from billet rather than cast. Similar for steel products.
