      What is your undergraduate major? Just curious because I also view mine as irrelevant to counseling (English) but in Texas, they require you to teach for two years before you can become a counselor

    Thank you for this wonderful explanation. I remember when I was in high school and am still bitter because I was never really career counseled. Basically my "counselor" just gave me my classes for the next semester without any input from me. I should have been more proactive but never had any support or mentors. I am shy but really that is no excuse for me or the counselor. I attended a school that was in a poor neighborhood but we had good teachers. I am 67 and graduated in 1969, but it still upsets me to this day. Thank you for helping your students so much.

      I graduated in the 90s and went through the same thing. Our school counselors did not help us with career counseling or anything else. I think it would have been helpful if they would have helped prepare us for the realities of life and college.

    This was a great video. When I graduated high school I always wanted to be a school counselor. I graduated in 1986. I was discouaged from doing so because I was told that the job market was slim for counselors and teaching was a better degree because you will always have a job. Unfortunately the majority of school counselors sit behind a desk and are only tracking scheduling kids classes. It would be helpful if high school guidance counselors were more visble and helpful ie tabling information during freshman orientation, being available during parent teacher conferences, providing workshops

    • @Momoko458
      @Momoko458 5 років тому

      I’m not sure what your experience with school counselors may be, whether you saw that for yourself or whether it is hearsay. I had similar misconceptions as you as I was thinking about the profession, but what changed my mind was speaking with high school counselors about their job and their experience, and they explain that the role can be very different based on the school and the population, even depending on circumstances like the caseload of students. If you are assigned 500 students, you WILL have less time to meet 1:1 with students and have to do more behind the scenes work. However, that is usually something you before you agree to work at the certain school. At my high school, drop ins were always welcome, whereas some schools have an appointment system. Either way, it seemed to me like students always have a way to reach their counselor. There are also periods of time where counselors have to focus on scheduling, like the beginning of the year, which sucks but is necessary. However, with the counselors I’ve spoken to, they do the things that you described, such as give presentations, workshops, as well as being in touch with parents and teachers to ensure students’ well beings. I agree on the sentiment that I wish in the profession that they can engage with students more, and trust me, most counselors wish they could in a perfect world. However I acknowledge the limits and they only have so many hours in a day. School counselors actually have a lot to deal with in a day and need to set boundaries for themselves so that they are not overexerting themselves and burn out.

    So a bachelor's degree in general studies would allow me to master in school counseling? I'm thinking of finishing my degree in psychology and considering my options. I was a kid that just fell through the cracks, and was written off, I had un-diagnosed issues, I was smart, but struggled to focus in school. No one picked up on the fact that I would test out of English, that in middle school I read at a college level but was getting D's. They just passed me on to get rid of me. I was not encouraged or expected to go to college. I'd like to help other kids who were like me. I know when I go to my daughter's school, I love being around all the kids, I just think they all have so much potential, and I love their energy. And when she talks about kids in class who act "weird" or act up, I try to help her understand that they might have a difficult home situation, or they might have ADHD or something like that and can't help it. Thank you for this interview, it was really helpful for me!

    I live in WA and have over 12 years of experience advising and counseling students at all grade levels, graduated with honors, and having trouble finding a job or being accepted into a grad program. The barrier has been not having a teaching certificate. If I could go back I would had extended my graduation and earned a teaching certificate to become more competitive, being exposed to classroom management. I'm sure each state is different, but in WA that has been a barrier, so I moved to Montana in a grad program now, but not CACREP certified.
