So fun fact: apparently mid-air theif changed his name from 'public morality' because a hit korean hiphop song with the same name was released. His name change is actually a fun play on words, since '공중' can mean both 'public' and 'to float', and '도둑(theif, pronounced "DODOOK")' is only one letter different from '도덕(morality, pronounced "DODUK")'
I'm Korean and I'm so happy to see Korean indie artists attracting attention overseas. Anyway, I watched the video so well. I hope you continue to produce good videos.
OMG THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING HOW PHENOMENAL THE SECOND HALF OF CURVE IN LIGHT IS!!!! Seriously the most blissed out I felt listening to a song in 2020
I think the first song on the album ‘why?’ always sticks in my head as the best one not because it’s actually the best but because the album as a whole is so good that i can only remember clicking on the first track and the rest just sort of blends into an otherworldly experience behind it.
this guys are literally hidden diamonds. I remember the first time i listened to crumbling by the singe fact that it appeared in my spotify recommended section and something about the album cover made me click it and give it a try. I couldn't believed what i was listening, when these chains appear it was something out of this world and i instantly fell deeply in love with the rest of their music. So really great video for an artist that deserve waaay more recognition :)
my favorite song was Gameun Duet, that song is literally a masterpiece and i don’t know how he did it but he made that song sound so happy and sad at the same time but it’s such a great song, great review by the way!
Having "White Room" from this guy appear in my discover weekly on spotify was the best thing that has happened to me in the past like 2 months lmao. great vid, btw
This is korean man who feel so happy to hear mid-air cheif from abroad youtuber. Thanks. + he changed his name because of popular hiphop song named "공중도덕", "public moral".
just found this video but i’ve been listening to crumbling for 3+ years now and am completely fascinated with everything on the album. these chains and why are so incredible but nobody has said anything about protector yet! truly everything on there brings so much color and vibrance to each song it is a masterpiece. can’t get enough of it!
Really glad I found this vid…! Now I feel less alone having stumbled across this gold. I was also mesmerised by the latter half of Curve and Light… so blissful! Great video :)
THANK YOU! spotify recommended me his Public Morality album, but when I clicked the artist none of his songs would show up, and everything was written in japanese and I didnt know how to look him up, I had to screenshot it, translate the image, and copy the text on google, your video explaining everything was a life saver, now I finally found all his songs
I've been listening to Mid Air-Thief for about 1 year but only recently entered the rabbit hole of his identity and general existence. I love their album "Gongjoong Doduk" and I didn't know he/they had other alias! Thank you for your video!
NO WAY DUDE. I Am literally so shook on the Hyoo aspect because I've been listening and loved both Hyoo / Mid-Air theif's stuff and then you drop this bombshell on me that Hyoo IS MID-AIR-THEIF WHAT.
Awesome vid! I first heard of Mid-Air Thief about 1,5 years ago, and he's been on constant replay the whole time, to the point that he's got to be my fave musician right now! There's NO one else whose entire discography is as consistently breathtaking as his. And the mysteries in his personality and (for me) the language really help with creating a wonderous and otherworldly atmosphere.
Talking about interesting japanese/korean artists: have you heard 3776 - Saijiki? It's one of the most insane, yet joyful albums i've ever heard, and their approach to songwriting is so overtly conceptual that it's fascinating (and has inspired me to make an album with the same concept)
i’ve been listening to a lot of japanese and korean indie music and idk how tf i recently found out about mid air thief but im definitely gonna listen to more of their songs,, would be nice if you could make a video recommending some japanese or korean artists/bands. great video btw ^-^
great video and summary! I just found his music recently and was hoping to find some live performances on youtube but was happy to stumble on this instead! also i'd heard he had to change his name because there was already another artist named public morality and was wondering why he changed it to mid air thief (which seems so random) but because of this video i realized the two are only one letter off in korean, haha.
Just found your video, good stuff. Every so often, there's an album that comes up that really grows on me over time, and this is one of them. I discovered it as a recommendation from someone who mentioned Mid-Air Thief as good korean music. I gave it a shot because I didn't expect that kind of rec from that person, and the song that really grabbed my attention is These Chains, which made a bigger impression than Why. Over time, my appreciation grew really deep, with Gameun Deut and Curve and Light with that fantastic second half that you mentioned. Dirt took a while to really click because it's a bit of a mess, but once you really pay attention to it, it's a gorgeous song. It's not a perfect album imo, Protector really doesn't do it for me and Crumbling Together is just ok, but they might end up growing on me like Dirt did. In the end though, No Answer is by far my fav track, it evokes bittersweetness in a way that really makes me wanna cry at times.. Overall though, the thing that pulled me with this album is the synths, I love interesting and distinct production and this album is as interesting and distinct as I've come across so far, and eventually the vocals became another appeal of this album. I've yet to listen to his first album, but I'm scared it will not be like Crumbling lol P.S.: if you still haven't done it, korean alphabet (hangul) is really easy to learn if you still want to sing along :p
Thanks for such a detailed comment about your listening experience with this album, it was fun to read! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You should definitely listen to his first album. It's different from crumbling, and while I think crumbling is better than it, his first album is special in it's own kind of way and a very unique listening experience. It is very much like crumbling in the sense that you'll be mesmerized the whole way through. Learning Korean has been something that I've been thinking about so I might just have to try it!
How do you like every artists that I do? CSHR, Deathgrips, Sufjan, Mid-Air Thief, Tyler, Paranoul, you mentioned Weatherday once. It’s borderline scary.
Wow thank you… I needed this. Oh and you gotta check out the album ‘Petrichor’ french musician named ‘Keor’. It’s kind of a Prog rock album leaning a bit more towards Metal. But it have the exact same vibe i get from crumblibg. I can’t describe that in words… you need to hear for yourself to understand it. It is other worldly… try to listen to the title track and you’ll get what I mean.
I’m sure you’re all aware of the first Shadow Community ep released in 2016 but that’s also essential. I read that Shadow Community is his collaboration with a specific vocalist.
love crumbling to death, one of my favourites oat, i feel like it's getting more recognition now though it's still relatively unknown, let's hope for even more recognition :)

Ya that single was a bit weird. Spotify has an issue with different artists being able to upload music under the same name as each other and having it pop up on the same artist page so I think that is what happened. Will definitely check out that album!
crumbling might honestly be a 10/10 album for me after listening to it for about 2 years now
Definitely a 10/10 for me!
mid air thief sounds like what would happen if music had an era of surrealism
i just randomly found crumbling like an hr ago and its breathtaking
Definetly one of my favorite albums of all time
Mid-Air Thief's These Chains really blew my mind. I have never heard such an interesting piece of art.
One of the coolest songs that I've ever heard!
that song brought me to this video lol
