Dude seriously, you have NO idea how badly that opening threw me for a loop. That beach looks *exactly* like the beach where I first discovered Mid-Air Thief, literally. The sand, the vegetations, the gloomy sky, down to the way the sea wave rolls and crashes, everything match perfectly. You remind me of just how magical that whole experience was. It was December 2021, I was lost af and really struggling mentally with my final thesis, looking for internship in the middle of a pandemic, and just life in general, which led me to impulsively took a one-month internship at a small wind turbine startup company I found by chance while scrolling on Instagram. I didn't know until I got there that their office was nothing like I imagined. There was no tall concrete building, no signs of your typical workplace activities, not even a sign of civilization, just a bunch of wooden houses with some windmill towers in a small random village, a few stone-throwing-distances away from the beach. There were only like 15 people working there whom I quickly became friends with. Every unwindy night I would slept on a treehouse and every dawn I would jog along the eerily silent beach exploring the place, each day farther than the previous. And on one fateful day, during my morning jog, I finally decided to play this korean song UA-cam algorithm had kept showing in my feed since weeks before I got here. Crumbling Together was the first song I listened to. And, the next thing I remembered, I was in a whole different realm. Feelings I couldn't name, but know exactly I'd been longing to feel, all came materialized before my eyes and ears. It was 10 minutes of me just standing on that gloomy beach alone looking at my surroundings in pure, indescribable awe. Then I decided to listen to the whole album and that 10 minutes turned into 45 minutes of even more higher state of existence. It was exactly like you described, a feeling of undefined yet comfortable isolation and self-discovery. I always wish I could revisit that place and relive that experience again once I have freed myself from these things I'm still struggling with. You just gave me a pinch of that wish coming true, so I just wanna thank you. Thank you for this video (And sorry for the wall of text and broken grammar).

One time I showed my dad These Chains and he said it sounded like Grizzly Bear.

Crumbling meant so much to me. Seeing this video has just dropped me back into a happy point in time when I discovered it.
"Ahh These Chains" had an atmosphere that spun me around. I'd never heard anything like it. It's like a changing dream which you float through
."Why?", "Gameun Duet", "Crumbling Together', and oh my god "Protector" All such beautiful songs.
Hearing those plucked strings, after so long, is flooding me with emotion. I can't wait to listen to it again now.
    Thank you! :)

I remember when Parannoul starting breaking out on RYM, and I was blown away by To See the Next Part of the Dream as well as the split they did with Asian Glow and sonhos toman conta. Such amazing stuff, and I'm glad that the internet picked up on it almost immediately.
Anyways, I haven't heard any Mid Air Thief yet, but they're definitely on my radar. Great video as always :)

One of my favorite examples of the internet bringing praise to an artist that was underseen is how Fishmans wasn’t very well known outside of Japan prior to a few years ago, and now despite their career being over 20 years over, people from outside of Japan have fallen head over heels for them and become inspired by them.
Though if you mean blowing up as they come out then the one I remember that most with was Black Dresses where I remember discovering Thank You as they started to pick up in listeners and falling in love with it.

Fishmans came to mind immediately for me too. They’ve got multiple albums in RYM’s top 100, which is kind of nuts

Will forever associate crumbling with when it soundtracked a bike ride I had at the beach that helped me call down after having an anxiety attack, thank you for this video

One of my stoner friends from high school showed me "These Chains" off of "Crumbling" around February or March of this year and holy shit I was hooked. I saw them mentioned in brochure that came with a record I got from Turn Table Lab like 2 months ago which was pretty cool. Glad you are covering them!

both crumbling and GD have deeply impacted me. I am infinitely grateful to have stumbled upon this music years ago (thanks random rym list) and it still remains incredibly relevant as two of my favorite albums. I didn't believe the unique soundscapes he achieves in basically every project he's touched could even exist. He not only blends together electronic and acoustic elements so seamlessly in a way I've never encountered but his approach to the basics of composition such as voice leading and song structure are incredibly inventive (I'm thinking particularly of the last track off of GD "the knot"). Id love to mail him a letter of gratitude some day but I equally respect is desire to remain invisible to the public eye. thank you mr. thief for expanding my conceptualization of what is possible in regards to music and the pursuit of beauty in general. I try not to deify my musical idols but I am continually mystified away by this project. cheers

I don't think Crumbling's genre can roundly fit into a particular category or anything, but there is something about its aesthetic that matches the level of craft of C418 or Spilly Cave. These artists even have similar sounds/soundscapes, but are utilized uniquely and differently by each of them. I think C418 and Mid-Air Thief's album can be categorized as "background" music, similar to what we get from impressionist composers. I forget the word for that type of music, though.

I remember finding him through his first album years ago, when one song found its way onto my Spotify Discover weekly from a weird unlisted Chinese Release of the album. I fell in love with Crumbling years later without realizing these two albums I love were from the same man.

Crumbling is an album I can only really listen to when I'm in a mood for it but it's one of my favorites every time. One thing I find really interesting is how despite the fact that I don't understand any of the lyrics, I find that it tends to just add to the music. Anyways this dive felt targeted, next you'll tell me you're making a video about sweet trip (haha unless...)
