I caught my first two bull red fish today on pompanos rigs I tied, using fish bites. I doubled up with one on one rig and one on the other at the same time. One red was 40" the other was 37" . A fellow fisherman came along and helped me out. These were the largest fish I had ever caught After watching you I decided to vacation in Pensacola. I also have caught my first two Pompano again on fish bites. one 16" and one 18". Your enthusiasm has been catching.. I have tried natural bait, sand fleas and shrimp, but I have one caught fish on the hook with fish bites. If there was a way to post a picture of the bull reds, I would. Thanks for your videos, keep it up.
This is so awesome to hear! I’m glad some of the tips are paying off! If you check me out on Facebook (Bama Beach Bum) you can send me the pictures via message, or you can email them to me: matthewisbell6@gmail.com. I’d love to see them!
As a newbie , i find you are a wealth of information, probably for anyone who follows you. Coming down from the Canadian Atlantic shores and spending the winter months along your shores and in Texas. Thanks a million.
Tied my 1st pomp rigs today, thanks Matthew. Using a ring LED light that you can clamp to a table that also has the magnifying glass in the center is a big help if you have bad eyes.
THANK YOU! I just got back from OBX and made my own pompano rigs instead of using those wire ones you get at the tackle shops. It was easy following your video...and they worked great! And I made my own 'flip flop floats' I saw on Salt Strong's channel. And this was the first time I used 1/0 in-line circle hooks. They worked flawlessly. Thanks again...love your enthusiasm - keep up the great work! By the way, I didn't buy any shrimp or squid this year, just Fishbites and caught red and black drum, whiting and lots of pompano! Hope you and your friends survived the hurricanes these past few weeks...
Best tutorial on making rigs I have ever seen. Well presented and easy to learn from. Thank you for your patient explanations and for taking the time to teach us beginners how to succeed in fishing.
Love your videos! I'm a senior citizen living in florida and kayak fish alot but going to Atlantic Beach, NC this summer and plan on doing some surf fishing. Find your videos fun to watch and full of knowledge. Love your attitude and personality. I know it would be a blast to fish with you! Thanks for all the information! God bless ya!
i know your video was not about how to tie dropper loops specifically.. I have watched several videos on how to make dropper loops..the way you tied them is so much easier for me to follow
With a wife & 3 kids who love to dock fish for pinfish, I had to learn to tie my own rigs too. I've learned with them that the simpler and less parts involved, the easier it is on my wallet haha
Not trying to be a know-it-all, because I didn't know how to tie it. But I went looking for a polymer knot. It's a Palomar knot. Thanks for teaching me how to tie this.
Dude, I can't get enough of your videos, I love them! Keep em' coming! I'm planning a trip to Cape Outlook in the outer Banks early summer and that is prime time for sea mullet (whiting) and I think pomps will be active too. I just made my first attempt at tying your pompano rig and it's not pretty. My starting measurements that I based on your specs didn't turn out to be the target length, I couldn't find the floats at Bass Pro, I got the 30 lb fluoro (I might use the 20 lb mono on the next one), but I think it might still work. I'm sure I'll get better the more I do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Great tutorial, I can tie my own rigs now and don't have to waste my money buying rigs now. I bet this would work as a catfish rig with the float to keep it off the bottom where you get snagged a lot.
Nice video. One question. What type of weight do you use (e.g. egg sinker, bank sinker, pyramid sinker, etc.) and what weight and where do you tie weight? I assume, I assume at the bottom below the hooks.
Just rewatched this and now tying my own rigs. All I have is 30lb mono right now and beads with a 1 or 2 circle hook. Can’t find floats in middle GA. But hoping these work!
I could only find orange floats locally, so I "cored" some foam (the rubbery stuff, not the poly) with a 3/8" pipe, sharpened around the edges. - clipped the pieces so they were about the size of a mini marshmallow, strung them up on a long piece of #12 wire, sprayed them neon, and had more floats than I will need for 5 seasons. Haven't been often enough to seriously stress test the hand-tied rigs, but I'll keep throwing them.
you should get together woth Joe and Luke with the salt strong. They put together a beach fishing eductional video but the guy doing it was to area specific and alot of people did not get alot out of it. I like your videos. The casting out at different distances, looking for different structure, tackle tips, bait tips ... learned alot thanks.
I appreciate the video. I mainly surf fish NE Florida. I have been tying my own rigs for a few years now and have experimented plenty. I have mixed feelings about beads and floats. I seem to have a better bite ratio when I fish just the baited hook. I typically use sand fleas, sometimes blanched sand fleas, and seldom fish bites. The blanched fleas are an attractant themselves, or so it seems. I also stopped using kahle or circle hooks, again, a get a higher percentage of hookups when fishing a J hook. Just my 2 cents. My last Pompano outing, 10 bites, landed 9, kept 6. Also, fishing sand fleas I seem to hook many bonnet head and lemon sharks, the circle and kahle hooks often fail to hold onto the sharks, where the J hooks hold.
Those are likely blacknose sharks not lemons..next time you get one look at the snout and you will see a black marking on the tip. Lemon sharks also typically have a more rounded snout like a bull shark. Just my guess it is blacknose what you’re getting because I get quite a few of them on the pompano rig as well.
Have you tried cutting part of the dropper loop near the knot to produce a single drop line? It seems the single line would be less visible to fish that might be leader shy. Thanks for your videos; I've learned a lot from you!
done it both ways....my opinion, makes no difference....other then you have to be careful the single line isn't to long or it will wrap around the main leader line....if your using 20# test.....He catches lots of fish so I guess we can say that speaks for itself....If your down in the Florida keys on a dead calm, gin clean water day..then I think tackle could be an issue....
Hi beach bum my name is David Brown I go down to Florida for 2 to 3 weeks every Christmas looking to get into Surf fishing for the first time what would you recommend for gear pole and real been watching a lot of your videos and obviously you’ve been doing this for a long time I’m just starting out
Thanks for this video!!! I’ve been trying to learn how to do this myself for a while and you’ve made it so clear and easy. Just subscribed and I will continue to watch your videos.
I use a different rig due to the fact that I want to remove/replace hooks. It's called a "Mortician Rig". The knots I use are Figure eight knots (loop on end and standard in middle) and noknot knot for snelling the hooks (snell is recommended for circle hooks). It works great when the blue fish bite off the hook, just replace the missing hook in seconds. I have used them with three hooks. That's when replacing a hook in seconds pays off. blue fish can be annoying sometimes. Give it a try - it cast great and helps remove twist due to way the hooks are attached.
I've bought one premade rig from the store (Walmart) and that was my Pompano rig. It's lasted me since November and it's still going strong lol. It's got the croaker (Kahle) hooks on it. I can't count the Pompano and whiting I've hooked on that rig. I'll use it till it breaks then tie my own.
@ Bama Beach Bum very nice video I read through the comments and I haven't noticed any mention of the size and type of hook you are putting on this drop ring? I was going to tie a few but didn't want to tie with the wrong size hook, lol, again thanks a lot for the excellent video and Merry Christmas from Cape Canaveral Florida......cheers
How do you get the line into the smaller #2 hooks? I use 20# and can not for the life of me get them to go into the eye sometimes. Drives me insane fighting that loop haha. I tie all my rigs but I'm baffled how they get those tiny hooks on 20# line. Love the videos btw keep em rolling !
The color helps catch the attention of fish feeding in the surf. The sand fleas have a bright orange sack of eggs that it is imitating. Also, the cochina shells have lots of different colors on them. This is the main 2 food sources for fish feeding in the surf.
Float keeps you from getting covered up in the sand, also beads and whatnot on the line help keep your traces from twisting up around you main drop in the surf.

Great and very informative video! I have also been in between 20lb & 30lb test as far as presenting bait goes or do you think that would be more due to strength of the current? Thanks for all the awesome videos!

Excellent over the shoulder video so one can follow along easily. Thank you very much for explaining the line weight, hook sizes. All of it. Awesome!!!

So if your using 20lb flouro or mono liter, what are you using on your mainline of your surf rod, 15lb? Isn’t that rather light weight line for a surf rod?
first, surf casting requires a leader....leader to main line...there are a number of methods...suggest you goggle that...depending on your rod and how small the eyes are will determine what knot will work....leader to rig...also a number of knots that will work....
For my floats l like to use those bright orange foam ear-plugs. I get them for literally a dollar a dozen. Then l cut em in hal. So l end up with 24 floats for $1. Then l just poke a hole in em with a toothpick or micro screwdiver... whatever's handy.
I caught more fish this year than I ever have in the surf before. Thanks for helping me get away from store bought rigs, it paid off.

first, surf casting requires a leader....leader to main line...there are a number of methods...suggest you goggle that...depending on your rod and how small the eyes are will determine what knot will work....leader to rig...also a number of knots that will work....
Where or who do you by the floats, hooks, beads, swivels from?
For my floats l like to use those bright orange foam ear-plugs. I get them for literally a dollar a dozen. Then l cut em in hal. So l end up with 24 floats for $1. Then l just poke a hole in em with a toothpick or micro screwdiver... whatever's handy.
Matt how do you store those in your taco bag or tacklebox
I enjoy your videos my friend! Keep’m coming!
