Quick Drive: Manual 2019 Mazda3 - The Lightest and Most Fun!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- I go for a short drive in the manual transmission version of the all-new 2019 Mazda3. This is the front wheel drive hatchback in Premium trim, which is the only model and trim that offers the manual. Even after just a short drive it's clear to me that the lighter weight of this model, combined with the lighter steering and easy-to-use manual is the one enthusiasts will enjoy most. What do you think of it? Thanks to Mazda for the opportunity!

Thank you mazda for making manual transmission
Not on the model that matters though..
Now make it available in more than one body style and one trim or you are guaranteeing its demise like with your Mazda 6 and Hondas accord
Sure it will make up only 5% or so but let it grow slowly as demand warrants and give it newer manual features like rev matching launch control no lift throttle Toyotas cut off prevention tech adjustable engage point and aluminum pedals
Add manual combo is a must and a poor man's golf r only better looking and equipped with a better interior
@Gorgon Phone 0- 60 about 7 seconds is slightly slower than an si by half second and about 1.5 seconds slower to the gti
It needs that turbo for a really good time and some mods
Interior exterior attention to detail is good though
Just needs power badly and more manual trims
@Gorgon Phone I agree I am confident it will get the 250hp 2.5 liter turbo within 2 years
Next year will be the x engine about the same power better economy than the turbo.
I would be interested in something that can compete with the gti for sure but at very least the civic si at these near and over $30000 prices
You can get both the gti and so with current deals at $22 and $24k pretty well equipped with much better performance but no where near the attention to detail and interior refinement or exterior looks.
Awd is good for a golf r competitor for like 10k less if they offered a turbo add manual for like 30k
@Gorgon Phone probably wishful thinking on my part, as the golf R is what I would get if it was not priced so high.
i bought this vehicle a month ago; i absolutely love it. the gear box has short throws, and it drives so good. if you turn off the traction control you really feel the pull. it has a low growl on the exhaust when you’re accelerating especially on 1st and 2nd gear. it’s such an awesome vehicle!! get it, folks! if Mazda produced the AWD in 6 speed manual, that’d be colossal. nonetheless, good job #Mazda!
It seems to have been a year now... How do you feel about the Mazda3 now? Do you still have it and what are your thoughts? I am still shopping, trying to wait on fair pricing to return.
Hey there T.K. I still have it, and i really like the car. like i stated before, i would have preferred the AWD turbo but they didn’t have one there; i was approved fast and the deal was a bit good to pass; i can’t complain. the manual transmission is great, with short throws, and smooth shifting. i bought it shorter but wider tires; better grip, but slightly lower than before, yet, it still drives well. i’d recommend a Mazda and preferably an AWD. If they had an AWD mazda3 manual transmission, i’d prefer it. but this front wheel drive manual is fun to drive. its fuel efficiency is good too
@@ramirovalenzuela56002 years, how it be?
Long live the MANUAL!!!😎
1:55 that truck almost had you but stalled shifting to second. 😬
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought modern trucks couldn't stall 😅 (seriously).
@@okniceguy thats not a new truck
@@smilebro100 yeah? About what year could you place it.
My close friend told me, maybe closer to 10 years ago, that [some] trucks don't stall because of a device. You'll just have it jerking violently.

"Just sitting here in traffic, it is certainly fun." I don't know why I found that so funny.
They need to make the speed versions again:(
asdf jkl; they are probably going to. But not with Mazdaspeed branding. The 2.5 turbo will end up in this under a “Sport” trim. Manual will be unlikely with the turbo though.
@Gorgon Phone I prefer Mazdaspeed. You can easily say Speed3 or Speed6 or whatever. MPS has no sort of presence in the US. At least Mazdaspeed has always been known in the US even before they had their first car which was the Protege
@Gorgon Phone mazdaspeed was around long before fast and furious
If it was awd and manual that’d be sick but at least they make a manual
There is one available
@@colinl5985 can't wait for that combo
They should have made it rear wheel drive, at least... sigh
@@ejojo13 Mazda does not have the resources add is the best that they could do like the Audi a3 a4 Mercedes a.series and cla series and golf series all fwd based for packinging room and price
@@colinl5985 The manual transmission is only* available on the FWD hatchback. Not even on the sedans.
Okay, so Mazda put it out there... now please, people BUY this car with manual!!! In the end it's down to $...
But I'm buying an accord?
Thank you for this. People think that manufacturers are killing manual. They're not. It's because people aren't buying them! I work at Mazda and so far no one has ordered this in manual. Almost all are AWD. Maybe if Mazda offers manual and AWD they'll win over some people...But people need to realize 90% of their driving, the car isn't driving all 4 wheels so it's just a marketing gimmick to get people to spend more.. and it's working
@@danielbryan5689 what do you do at Mazda?
@@supersabrosinho I was a service technician, but now I'm the pre-delivery inspector. All the new cars that come off the trucks get inspected and prepared by me before they are brought to storage or the prep department to get washed/detailed. I do damage reports as well as install dealer options/liveries and diagnose/repair faults on some cars.
@@supersabrosinhoBtw it's been 2 months since I've posted this and I've only seen 1 Mazda3 with a manual transmission at my lot. That's still 1 more than I expected!
I think I’m falling in love again! The Mazda Hatchback brings back great memories of my first new car! It was an 1984 Rabbit 🐇 GTI! I totaled it in year!, But I loved that car and always been attracted to hatchbacks! The Mazda 3 Hatchback is a much better and premium version suitable for a more mature but still fun-loving 60 year-old soon to be empty nester.
Good to see the new Mazda3 in a manual transmission
#savethemanuals
indeed !!! thanks Matt for the nice review. and Thanks to Mazda for continuing making Manual transmission cars! are way more fun to drive and easy to control than automatics. Love this car!
Thanks for the quick look at the manual version. Definitely the one I would be interested in. Really like the color and contrast of the interior. Looking forward to a more in depth review of this manual version when you have it for a longer period.
Thank you so much for also posting this one. This is the version I care about. Mazda at its best :)
Definitely wanted to get an impression of the manual. 3022 lbs is a good weight as well.
I have the 19 GS hatch with manual. Picked it up last week. It’s fun and has good power. Very quiet as well. I have just over 400 km on it and only burned less than half a tank of gas. The interior is also a cut above the rest in its class. No hard cheap plastics.
In regards to some people wanting a turbo for this car. Mazdas have always been about balanced power and handling. The unique thing about Mazdas is the ability to carry momentum through the corners due to the superior handling. One has to refrain from using the brakes and trust the handling. I see lots of people on the road who over use the brakes, loose their momentum, then try and recoup by jumping on the gas, and then complain it's under powered. On my 2017 3 GT with the 2.5, the power kicks in @ 2,800 RPM and really tops out @ 4,500 RPM. I have a manual though, so I have the ability to place the revs where they perform best. This all being said, a turbo would wake it up for sure, but add to the complexity, cost, and introduce potential reliability issues. But would definitely set it apart from the pack. The Honda Accord comes with two turbo engine options, and with a stick. But is also a larger vehicle.
Looks like a little boy driving Daddy’s car. Made me smile from ear to ear! Shaky video but very informative. Nice work!
Thank you for making a video on the FWD manual. I hate that most reviewers only drive the AWD version. They just assume everyone either has the money for the top trim or only cares about the top trim. AWD doesn't interest me since I live far from mountains and snow in Orlando. You're awesome dude
i think it's more because canadians for some reason put out a ton of mazda reviews, and if you're driving around canada, you're gonna need the awd four months out of the year.
I need the manual transmission on the awd, with a turbo please
Man the manual version looks like so much fun. Gonna be graduating soon and need a car, I can't drive manual but still like the idea of driving manual. Can't decide between the 2015/2016 Mazda 3 hatches or this new one (the price point + new generation is what's really stopping me on the new ones). Decisions decisions.
Raiyuden Should learn manual if you’re interested to drive on your own control.
I gotta know, did you ever learn to drive manual?
I really want the 2019 mazda 3 after watching so many videos
Mazda I hope you are listening. I would love to see the Mazda 3 sedan with AWD and the Manual. And if possible a speed version. :)
I have that exact car. I bought in August of 2019 and I love everything about it. It puts a smile on my face every day! :)
I had my 2014 Mazda 3 (super base model) for about 2 weeks when I got an aggressive driving ticket. Thing is ridiculously easy to drive "aggressively" :D
This is it, boys. The last generation of Mazda 3 with a manual transmission. I love my 2012 Skyactiv hatch 6-speed manual.

Is it on air bnb, I may want to rent it for a weekend.
Garret lololol
In the early 90's I owned an '81 RX-7. I spent my weekends driving a manual box truck. Sunday evening I'd get back in my car, about put my left foot through the floor and rip the shifter off. 😊
I used to work right in the area where you were test driving. Recognized all the buildings you were driving by.
Mazda. Please build a MANUAL Mazda3 GT Sedan for the Canadian market.
I need the trunk space, I want the amenities of the GT, and I will not buy an automatic.
You can get the manual in all trims of the Mazda

This car is amazing especially with that unique color.
Needs independent rear suspension to tackle potholes and get its zoom zoom back
Looks and interior are top notch though
Tigerex966, yeah for sure. I test drove one of these and when going over rough roads that cheap torsion beam’s disadvantages become clear compared to the previous generation. This just feels less playful, tossable and composed in the corners unless the road is just perfect.
@@subvet3668 I drive the older generation and it was as good as the excellent civic/so in handling and treatment of potholes.
Have not drive the new one but I know what to expect.
If they come out with a hot version they must reinstall independent rear suspension.
I wonder if you can add it with after market parts.
Lol the truck beside him stalled
That interior red is beautiful
I've owned 2 Mazda3s, currently a 2016 GT manual hatch. An AWD manual would have been nice, but I suspect they excluded it to keep cost down. More and more brands are only offering manuals on lower trims, which sucks, but at least some are still offering them. I'm not sure this redesign is worth upgrading to from a 2016 since it's the same engine, but I do like what they've done with the styling, inside and out. It looks even more upscale than my 2016.
This is EXACTLY how I'd have mine. Either Polymetal (like this) or Machine grey.
I love my 2018 but dang this 2019 is nice!!
Stay with your 2018. It's more fun to drive.
Thank you for this review! I'm getting a manual mazda 3 hatch as soon as it's out in Australia. So keen
Thanks Matt for comparing AWD and FWD and not simply focussing on the manual transmission in this review. I was on the fence about AWD (my current car is AWD, which is helpful in upstate NY, but my current commute is on well maintained roads, so I don't really need AWD), now I know I want the FWD version (though Auto transmission for me, I've owned both and for now I prefer the Auto with the ability to fully make use of start/stop adaptive cruise).
I'll spend the cost difference between the Premium AWD and FWD trim on a set of wheels and snow tires if I think I need them, though the gas savings over time will also make FWD the better choice for me.
I'm glad the video helped you!
Collest looking Budget hatchback
Interior looks pretty nice
They have manuals and need to make a performance model or bring back the mazdaspeed3
Love the color and interior! Wish this was a speed3 ;-)
I am going to buy a manual Mazda 3 with a 1.5L engine this weekend. My family and my friend confused why I plan to buy a manual car. It seems nowadays everyone prefer a automatic. I like to drive a manual. Finally, I stick to my hobby.
I will get the car in August, because the dealer told me that they have no stock of manual, and the factory need 1 mouth to make the car.
Whatever, it is happy to own a Mazda 3 with manual transmission~
Mazda needs to build a mazda speed3 with all wheel drive 250+hp manual transmission just like a focus rs:golf r.
It could be awesome with their level of refinement equipment and technology that would be an unmatched seller.
That’s a good first car
I'm trying to find a manual to buy and its slim pickins. It's no wonder they don't sell well -- they aren't really available. Nonetheless, thank you Mazda for still offering the manual, in a high trim too. I'll keep searching.
God Bless Mazda!!!! #SaveTheManuals #SaveStickShift
They need to offer the manual in the sedan.
MetikalMan yeah, it’s a must!
It is funny how model options change depending on the country. In Canada we can get the Sedan GX and GS with a manual but only with the 2.0L. The 3 Sport Gets manual option on all 3 trim levels with the 2.5L.

@@dallairforce1 Absolutely! I am still driving my 2006 Mazda3 manual sedan because Mazda does not have a sedan with manual to replace it.
Beautiful, beautiful car again Mazda punches above its class! And YES!! THANK YOU FOR THE MANUAL!!
The two colors of this test car inside and out would be my personal pick. Just beautiful I can't not say that enough.
You accelerated right past a tent city
I read somewhere that the hatchback only would be available with both AWD and manual trans.
What's the deal? If the sedan was available with both, I'd buy one in a second. I don't really like the looks of the hatchback.
I appreciate you Matt thank you
I wanted the Corolla hatch, will probably end up with this
LeCoureurDesBois don’t get the corolla hatch. The suspension is not as tight and the car is slow with a cvt and not as fun to drive. Get the mazda.
Just what I was looking to hear. Thanks mate !
...odd thing here is this, 3 pedals only available on the top level trim, nothing like making it even harder to get your hands on one😮

finally ... black trim and black wheels on a Mazda... looks great ...
Did Alex on Autos let you use his shirt for the Mazda 3 launch event?
Keep up the great reviews
Hahaha we were drive partners!
What do you think about the red interior?
Floor mounted gas pedal... the best with a clutch
Save the manual.
i hope mazda realeases a signature version of this, with the 2.5 turbo engine and multilink suspension, can you imagine that beast, omg please mazda make it happen
So no one talks about the rear suspension set up on the two wheel drive.. Beam axle any one? Why dump the IRS? That's not zoom zoom in my book. Beam axels are terrible and cheap way to go. Most roads in citys are rough and full of pot holes.
Thanks for the review, Matt!
If it was Turbo AWD and Manual Speed 3 that would make it a fun car to drive! J/s
Would be a nice competitor to the wrx :))
FD VALLE I agree!
Too bad you didn't get a chance to do a full on review on this car to discuss more about the driving experience. This is the exact vehicle I purchased, and thoroughly enjoying it!
U making me want to buy this now
Listen people, we need to show Mazda that we appreciate that they are still making the manual by buying them!! Show your support and buy this car!! It will give them more of a reason to make a speed version
on my short list si gti, i am hoping next year we get amore powerful engine and manual. maybe even an awd manual combo, as that would be sick and one of the only ones under 40K in a new modern body.
oh yea, cant wait for the awd version golf r junior.
The smile is all we need to see that the Manuals are great!
I bought a 2016 Mazda3 for my son and he just got into a minor wreck with it. 😔 it's not bad, but the other car was a Honda and the difference in damage between the cars is surprising. Although Mazdas look nice, they're like paper and crumble in an accident. Thin metals and cheap plastics made the Mazda succumb to the Honda. Not surprising is that it's super light compared to competitors. I love the Mazda, But I'll think twice before buying another.
The only problem with the 2019 Mazda's is it has the exact same motor and transmission as my 2013 6 speed. I went and looked at one yesterday and was impressed even for the base model but it'd definitely be nice if they gave it a hp bump
Means the engine is proven. Problem with new engines is they usually have some sort of problem during its life cycle which is why manufacturers tend to put out different versions of an engine as it gets older. Lexus follows this principle which is one of the reasons why they’ve maintained their reputation on good reliability.
I just bought this same premium model in manual (my first manual) and my first day I was having some trouble finding the bite point. I think I'm releasing the clutch either too slow (so I stall? Or maybe it's not enough gas, but usually I give it about 1 to 2.5k rpm when releasing the clutch) Or too fast so my tires screech and I jolt forward as I start to go. I practiced in a parking lot for an hour prior to driving home just stopping and going and seemed to start to get the hang of it but then driving for 3 hours straight home I kind of forgot how I did it precisely since I didn't have to stop along the highway. Also shifting from 1st to 2nd and then to 3rd is a bit jerky but shifting to 4th and 5th is not noticable at ALL, PERFECTLY smooth. I feel like I try to let the rpms drop a bit to match the next gear for the speed but those low gears still seem to jerk a bit.
It's only my first day with it though, but it's been QUITE stressful stalling at lights or in turn lanes 😅. I put a big fat "learning manual" paper in the rear window.
I really hope they make the AWD version manual
Ah yes, the ear to ear grin while flooring a FWD N/A 4 banger on moist roads.... LMAO. It’s like he’s a 16 year old who just got behind the wheel for the first time. Haha.
Second only to Honda in keeping manuals widely available. Good job Mazda. Offer a sports-inspired trim of this thing one day. Perhaps treat the 2.5L to the same kind of performance upgrades the Miata's 2.0L just received (which I own and love!).
always good with this guy
Having not driven a manual for over 10 years, and even that only being for a day or two, the Mazda dealer here let me test drive a manual (even after telling them that). Thing was quite easy to work with, though I dunno if I'd want it for city driving. Lots of friends in the city swear by manual though, so I dunno. I want a Sedan and Canada only gets the 2.0L with manual for those. I plan to test an auto come springtime and see how that "feels", but I may try out a manual again. Should feel a lot better than my Focus' DCT, anyway...
Beautiful
Had my mind set on a civic si but these do look nice. Also a fan of NA engines so that's a plus for the mazda too, and it being a beautiful looking hatchback means a lot. Does the 3 have at least a brake simulated LSD? Does it work well? Too bad the seats are so wide. That's also a complaint I have about my current mazda 6. Thanks for making all those nice reviews, I've watched many of them.
No LSD but didn’t seem to be a problem.
And thanks for watching the videos!
Civic SI was at the top of my list also. But the non turbo, engine, Hatchback option, & the styling blow the Honda out of the ballpark. By styling, I’m referring to the inside and outside of the Mazda Hatchback. It does not have the boy-racer looks of the Honda. The styling is beautiful! The premium look and feel of the Mazda’s interior surpasses the Honda. The quietness of the interior and the Bose sound system speaks to the music devotee in me! The minor horsepower discrepancy and lack of an limited slip differential don’t seem important anymore!
I Love ❤️ this car!
Yes I'm a bit torn too as well now. Still the 3 will be thousands more than the SI. I love and hate my current 6 though. Dislikes are the seats (lack support), no LSD (always one wheel wheel spinning when gunning it from a stop), and size (too long). The 3 only fixes size I'm affraid whereas the SI fixes almost everything....
The rear is more like the Genesis New York concept and I hope they'll use a turbocharged if it comes to Australia
Imagine how much better it could be if they had actually stuck with an independent rear instead of going to a torsion beam?
It's their patented torsion beam and they say that it's supposed to give the exact same feeling of a independent rear suspension without sacrificing quietness.
@@moka6564 Its Mazda trying to cut cost and calling it a "feature." All marketing BS,
Yeah don’t believe the marketing BS. The torsion rear sucks over less than perfect roads compared to the previous generation.
Imagine putting a turbo in this variant you have a serious hot hatch
I wish the sedan has same front end as the htch the hatch back looks sexy
Hey Matt, is the throttle response better with the manual than the auto? You mentioned there was a delay in your other video.
I prefer my 6MT in heavy traffic. Major reason is manual in new Civic is very easy to use and well placed. Seemed like that 2019 Mazda has the same formula. Looks very comfortable in there. Major difference is that Mazda looks significantly more premium while my Civic is 250lb lighter (2770lbs) and has a longer wheelbase.
Given Mazda AWD, all i have to do is turn off my traction control and I suspect my LX sedan 6MT will pull around the turn faster then that nanny system.
Just looked it up, new mazda 3 is actually 1 inch longer wheelbase then Civic.
Only problem is: you have to the premium package to get the manual which is like $29k after destination... you can get a base gti for less and absolutely smoke this (while probably having more fun)
reliability issues plague vw for me. parents had one and a jetta and both were woeful always in the shop random shit like ac and warning lights and stuff. i have the 3, 2017 model and its been 2 years worry free, even drove it cross country for 24 hours straight and it took it like a champ. performance is subjective too, the 3 is nimble and responsive without being fast. slow car fast is my camp.
jo pe oh yeah vw definitely has not been reliable overall in the past. Maybe i got lucky, but ive had 2 problem-free GTIs and they are so much fun to drive. My first one lasted me 120k miles pretty much problem free with exception of general maintenance. My gf has a mazda 3 she bought in 2017 and i enjoy driving that too. Ive driven both a lot and can say they both are really fun. I mention the gti as an indirect competitor here since its generally considered the best all-rounder, there are better performance cars for the money but not better performance cars than can pretty much do it all.
this is true, however if you want the premium features, including Adaptive Cruise, that makes you bump up to the Autobahn trim in a GTI, and then you are in the $36k range...
For ~$30k the comparable car would be a Hyundai GT N-Line.
E R i believe the manual gti does not have adaptive cruise on any trim, im talking about strictly manual transmission. The base gti comes pretty equipped with led lights, power drivers seat, heated front seats, iconic plaid trim, soft touch materials, and now the vaq electronic diff... thats a lot of stuff for $27k
NICE Quick Drive: Manual 2019 Mazda3
You should see if you could get one for a few days, definitely looks like a better deal than the Corolla hatchback
Give me a manual in the sedan please. 3 or 6....
I just don't want the hatchback and particularly at $29k plus
Do you guys think this would be a good vehicle to learn how to drive a manual transmission in?
Yeah from my brief experience it should be a fairly easy manual to learn on.
great review. looks like a fun car to drive!
id rather have the corolla, independent rear suspension would instantly sway me and the power is pretty comparable
Where are you Matt? Here!!!
You only mentioned the Carolla hatch, but how does it compare to the manual Civic sport hatchback?
I haven't driven one so that's why I can't compare it to this. Hoping to review one eventually but haven't had any available to me yet.
@@MattMaranMotoring That's kinda surprising since they're so common. Hope you get one soon. Great detailed review on the new Mazda3 though!
I'm holding out for a manual in the base sedan. Maybe 2020 or 2021?
I wouldn’t hold your breath. When I bought my 18 Mazda3 last year, the salesman said that almost all of the manuals that they’d sold up to that point were Grand Touring hatchbacks (which is coincidentally what I was buying). It’s all about supply & demand, if too few manual buyers opted for the sedan (especially in the lower trims), then there’s no sense in Mazda designing that kind of application for the new generation since they likely wouldn’t get their return on investment out of it.
Mazda said if you want a manual in lower trims, tell your local dealer. If they hear enough demand from dealers, they might do it.
Not enough power for awd to have a significant performance benefit. When I test drove my cx5 I went with fwd bc of everything he said, It felt lighter and quicker than awd. 2.5lt, not the new turbo.
The Mazda3 5 door should have AWD as an option with a manual transmission
I hope Mazda can drop off a long term one for you to really dig into Matt.
We’re planning on it! Not sure how soon though.
