Hey guys! Sorry for the re-upload, I goofed and put 14 seconds of black in the middle of the video. Sorry 'bout that, should be fixed now - Tommy
Ah that's what happened...
No problem...
Very cool review overall.
Or the clickbait. Were you ashamed of the clickbait?
We will forgive you, this time. 😜❤️
The fact that you are comparing it against luxury cars like Lexus, Audi, BMW, etc. instead of its direct competition like Toyota Coralla and Honda Civic tell me this Mazda is a winner.
@CarlosChip Morales yea definitely going to buy this when they put the Skyactive X engine in this.
It’s also a lot more money then a coralla and civic ....
@@KG370 Yea, if you are comparing base models but the Sport Touring Civic cost almost the same as the Premium Mazda 3. Plus Mazda 3 is a new refresh, give it a couple months and the price will drop. Your making it sound like it's a huge price difference, which it's not, but Mazda 3 just looks so much better.
Corolla hatchback kills this thing all day and is how much cheaper lol

Two words for Mazda: Mazdaspeed three.
I've read that there's a performance mazda 3 coming but not under the name of mazdaspeed
@@DarioAE01 That's great. I'll take it even without the name. Lol.
There will be a turbo3 but it wont be a speed 3. I work for mazda
@@DarioAE01 Thanks for the article, mate.
That is good news because last I heard they didn't wanna go sporty anymore they wanted to keep it classy.
You do realize it's a Mazda 3 right? Not a Mazdaspeed3. The regular 3 is just an economy car, not built for power and speed.
I know it's the "Economy" version. The mpg numbers are abysmal at best and it's pretty slow because of its weight.
@@kevina2052 for a non hybrid petrol it's good, you need to consider US and other countries MPG is worked out different in the UK it's quoted of getting over 50mpg
In the United States it's quoted as 24mpg city/32 highway. For that size engine in 2019, even with AWD, that's not very good. This engine has been around for way too long. Mazda needs to get their skyactiv-X engine out there..
@@kevina2052 disagree completely. The engine is just a smooth and just as fuel efficient as most cars out.
Yeah. He’s mad that you can’t buy a 2019 mazdaspeed 3. It doesn’t exist
I saw one of these in person the other day on the freeway. It looks WAY better in person..
I agree. I was at my local Mazda dealership yesterday and saw one there. Really looks great.
Man I hope so. That is one fugly looking automobile in pictures.
I would hope so, cause it couldn't look any uglier on video...
It does look better in person...not sure of the color of this one in this video either
A neighbor just got one in red and I think it looks really good.
The engine is incredibly reliable, gets perfect MPG (higher than what it estimates) and is reliable(i like to say it twice). Id take that over an unreliable powerful engine anyday. And the driving experience is incredibly quick I would say.
That’s truly a beautiful car, Mazda always Kills it with the design and pricing for their vehicles. My wife is talking about wanting the sedan version. I mean you just can’t beat the price👍🏻

5:23 YES. I saw one of these today in a parking lot and I actually took a walk around it to get a better look because the styling was reminiscent of something that I couldn't quite place. And as soon as you mentioned it, it clicked. The Brera was a beautiful car, and so is this. Good review!
The reason the digital fuel range is different is all in the name... range, it's a calculation based on your driving behavior. The analog fuel meter is based on volume in the gas tank, how much liquid gas is left.
Some people fail to understand this
The analog fuel gauge in these cars aren't very accurate I can drive 80 to 100 km and it will still tell me it's full.
@@philipsk it's done for psychological reasons for the customer. www.google.com/amp/s/www.autoblog.com/amp/2010/12/14/gas-gauge/
Thank you. It is annoying to see car "reviewers" not understand simple concepts... I should have just ignored it but here I am. Typing away.
Yep! I occasionally take a chance, and drive to Brooklyn, NY (25 miles away) on a 20 mile tank. With calm , clear, highway driving and maximum efficiency, I’m able to make the trip with 7 extra miles in the tank. (2018 CX-9)
Sooo, he's basically crying that it's not a Mazdaspeed 3. How does it make sense to criticize a car for not being a different car?
Shotgun Zombie It’s called entitled.
You hit it. It is a compact car competes with the Corolla, Civic, and a host of others.........and would certainly be my choice in this segment. Oh well, m plenty of other reviewers on the Tube.
Because Mazda stopped making the mazdaspeed 3. you can’t buy a new one
I would choose an impreza hatch personally
It's one of the only mazdas in production that doesn't have a turbo option. And it's $30k for the one he reviewed. So yeah that's a disappointment. I have a 2017 VW GLI that cost a fraction of the price for way more power and almost the same mpg. Plenty to whine about
the gauge cluster is genuinly gorgeous.
the entire car looks really good but with the analog-round digital-analog configuration it REALLY looks good
The new Mazda 6 is amazing! Just test drove it and it is dead quiet on the inside with all the technology and luxury that you could ever ask for, all under 30k
Nice job, Tommy. You've really evolved into an excellent car reviewer. The best at TFL, if I'm being honest. I hope you stay true to honest reviews. I really enjoy your videos!
i love how every reviewer exagerate on how to enter in the back.... they all do those fancy weird way to enter
Yeah so fake
They're all super tall too, lol
Thank you for good movie!
i'm proud of my MAZDA3!
from Japan
😁
Kinda reminds me of an Alfa Romeo Brera
Edit: he literally says that 3 minutes after I commented lol
You should have tested the 3 wheel slip test in sport mode and out of sport mode. The car activates G vectoring at that point and it will work a lot better.
Nice job on the AWD test, thanks.
I had one for a loaner and I was pissed I bought a cx5 instead. Its infinitely nicer than my 2017 mazda3. Awd is a nice bonus and the interior is easily best in class
I got a 2018 Mazda3 Touring Sedan with the premium package. Love the car. I was a little sad when I saw the 2019’s. But I got over it when I thought about it and realized the compression ignition engine is still on the way. Plus better features and tweaks get added each year. So maybe relax and enjoy your 3 like I am. Maybe trade it in a few years.
Psylent Productions Same here, I got my 2018 Mazda3 Hatchback in at the end of 2017. I heard of the new 3’s coming and was dissapointed I got one too soon, but now I love my hatchback. Probably when I pay it off I’ll get the new one in 2019
I have a '14 Mazda3 that I love! Have been thinking about trading it in on a '19 CX5 because I'd like a little more room and AWD. But now I'm torn! Maybe I can live w/o a little more room!
Victor Martinez I would wait. The 2.5l engine may be sticking around for a while longer while the rest of the car improves, but one thing I think will change soon is the transmission. They’ll likely go to an 8 speed or 10 speed to accommodate an updated version of the Skyactiv G engine giving it better fuel economy and performance.
I enjoy these AWD and 4WD testing videos, it’s interesting seeing own different systems work. Keep it up!
Agreed ;)
That thing looks like an Italian shooting brake. Love it!
Watching this in 2021, and now the only flaw was addressed lol
We finally have the Turbo option!
Manual and better awd system needed and rear suspension is bad lol
Digital gauge is like we got this bro you didn't use much gas meanwhile analog gauge "whispering" there lieing to you.... XD
LMBO :)
Great video. I own since new a 2009 Mazda 3 s hatchback 2.3 liter 5 speed auto. I have 205,000 miles with no major repairs. BTW my window sticker says parts content 95% Japan.
That 2.5L Skyactive engine is a sweet piece...I like more power too but that naturally aspirated engine trans combo is still one of the best on the road.
Why not turbo?
It's just slow, especially w AWD(heavier).
For what you get you can’t complain, the fit and finish rival luxury cars it’s well refined. I think Mazda is being smart about NOT including a turbo. I’ll have to look up the weight on this car, I’m surprised it feels slow with the 2.5L. My 2016 3, 2.0L 155 hp, manual 6 speed, isn’t fast but has no trouble keeping up or on on-ramps.
@@hifid3lity completely agree my 2.5 litre has more than enough power. It always keeps up with v6 commodores etc. People just never stop complaining.
@@JimBobe when you put a turbo on something like this you get reliability and longevity problems, like with Honda, they use a 1.5 turbo, the crv suffer from oil consumption, and the civic has the same engine, they went from 4th to 15th in reliability. Same with EcoBoost, lots of reliability issues, pretty much guaranteed turbo(s) replacement at 100,000 miles
Thanks for the great review! I love Mazda!
9:40 within their market, how could you not be into Mazda these days?
The gas and brake warning when they are pushed together is a great idea for those idiots who drive with their left foot on the brake.
I liked it the second time around
Good review, except for the praise of the AWD. There needs to be a standard that allows a manufacturer to place an AWD badge on a vehicle. If the vehicle won’t move with 3 wheels spinning, it’s NOT AWD & it’s NOT great.
Tens of awd cars are not able to move when three wheels have 0% traction and one wheel has 100% traction. That is not real scenario.
Great review!!
The digital gas gauge at 7:00 is showing fuel range left in miles rather than level in the tank.
Justin Kelly shouldn’t they still correspond with each other?
@@IsaacRayNJ Not really because one is miles and the other is level in the tank. The mileage one probably adapts to your driving and average fuel economy. Its not a linear gauge like the fuel level gauge.
I have a mazda and I just press the button that changes it to the amount of fuel in the tank.
Pressing info button changes gauge displays...
What isn't good? One big problem is that parking on city streets will produce a bashed grill frequently, since it has no effective front bumper.
This is not unique to Mazda, there are plenty of other new cars I would never buy because the front is unprotected.
Really great review of great car. Well done!
I'm very interested in this car. Thanks for the review
If I lived and drove at least a mile and up to two miles above sea level I might find the NA engine in the Mazda3 lacking in performance. But that's an environment that only a minuscule portion of the US public faces (i.e. About 1/4 of one percent). A 0-60 time of 7 seconds (C&D testing) at near sea level is more than adequate for the vast majority of drivers, especially if it's coupled with excellent handling. Typically TFL discussions of performance in vehicles with naturally aspirated engines include a reference to the elevation of Denver/Boulder. That should have been included here.
I'm usually skeptical about the value of AWD in a small, light FWD-biased vehicle. Typically a good set of snow tires and the weight of the engine over the drive wheels will accomplish about 95% of the missions of an AWD vehicle. But if Mazda's claims about the programming of the AWD system in the Mazda3 are valid, this may be an exception. A poor man's version of Acura's SH-AWD that aids handling in many situations.
Comments will be full of the typical youtube fanboys who believe that any car with less than 300 HP is suitable only for little old ladies and for whom "performance" consists of stoplight drag racing but Mazda has said repeatedly that the corporate direction of the company no longer includes Mazdaspeed vehicles. Instead, they hope to improve the brand's limited sales appeal with vehicles that handle well, have appealing profiles and upscale interiors. It's unclear whether that corporate strategy will succeed but it's also clear that earlier strategies didn't work. And for the tiniest of the independent "major" brands, the new direction is unlikely to be changed.
I get so tired of hearing everyone saying how underpowered Mazdas are. They have plenty of power for most people's needs. I have a '14 Mazda 3 2.0 manual and consider it a "quick" car. Very few people need a car with a 5 second 0-60. Mazdas are more about overall driving dynamics, which can't be beaten at the price.
Learn one important thing about the Mazda 3.
The 2.5 are okay off the line. But they shine after 80 MPH!
They are not $40,000 cars you keep comparing them to.
shannon howard shine after 80 my ass
I’m at 60 mph in 2nd gear. Stop driving it like a grandpa!
I have had mine for a week. Have not seen any on the road in Southern Ca. Had to sell my new Mazda 12 years ago after my father passed. Had the 2005 5 door. Was going to get a Civic, but I fell in love again with the Mazda.
I've had mine for about 2 months and have only seen mine and one other white one. Seen several sedans though
Thank you for speaking so clearly, for those of us who do not have English as their mother tongue
2 questions: Are you turning off the traction control/stability control, and engaging sport mode for the slip tests? Were you at a high altitude on the acceleration runs?
My neighbors 3 hatch runs great at close to sea level.
yeah he specified he had traction control on, youre explicitly told to turn it off for slip tests
I hated the rear end when Mazda first showed it, and felt the massive, squashed C pillar was odd. But now I think it's perfect, and that this car is stunning - especially in this color/wheel spec. Funny how taste can change quickly once the eye adjusts. I also felt the current gen WRX was hideous when released, but now I like it. Go figure.
Took me a sec too with the new Mazda designs. Took a bit longer with the Subaru’s though. They just don’t look “Subaru” enough to me. But my idea of a “Subaru” are the earlier rally designs and the 22B LOL.
Kudos - You're the first I seen to mention the Alfa Brera, in a review of the 3!! That alone deserved a like. The new 3 is polarizing, but I think it's stunning. Personally, I'd avoid the AWD(from the test - plus not really needed for my driving) and get a FWD with a 6 speed manual.
Damn Tommy, that is some hard work you are doing there. Those gloves are totally warranted.
Tommy, your reviews are definitely appreciated. You offer a perspective that definitely has an audience. Keep it up!
Awesome review and that color combo is amazing!
Thank you for pointing out everything you dislike or could be a flaw. It’s very good to drive. The interior is amazing to look at, touch, the seats are excellent and it’s so quiet inside. I might buy one now but I want to wait for the Skyactiv-X engine later this year or turbo within two years (I assume). For how advanced this car is there is still legitimate competition that I image will only get better in a couple years.
having driven modern 9 speed ZF equipped AWD's from experience the 6 speed Mazda auto is a fantastic box, underrated.
9 speed zf is the Worst performing transmission of all time
This is hands down the most attractive looking hatchback out there 👀

One thing about the keyfob that I didn't realize until I read about it in the manual is that the cover comes off and there's space inside it for the strangely-shaped spare key. I don't know if sticking the key in there gives it more heft or rigidity, but it does explain the size.
this is properly in depth review, especially things nobody else talks about so thanks a bunch :)
6:13 Kia Soul: hold my beer
You should try a thing called 2ND GEAR FIXED MODE during roller test. It made huge difference in my test of CX-3 on rollers.
Dont confuse him. You noticed he still has two rollers as most important test, not three.
@@seventhson4766 Imho two roller test is much more important than three roller test.
I see it differently. Two roller test is letting you know if awd is capable, three roller test tells you how much is capable.
@@seventhson4766 Think about any real scenario where three wheels has 0% grip and one wheel has 100% grip ;) It doesn't exist :)
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Right, to get three wheels with no traction means you're driving on ice or stuck in a mud patch lol. Both bad and both are scenarios that you shouldn't be driving in anyways. Just hang up the keys and call in sick to work lol.
I'm happily surprised that I gave you a shot.. This review is way better than I thought 💭..btw thats a big compliment I'm giving you.. Great Job tall and thin

I've owned mine since 2020 ... it's the best car I've ever owned. It's fun to drive and it's got all wheel drive. I haven't watched this to see what the flaw is but I sure can't think of one that would make any tiny difference as to whether I would buy one of these again
ive ordered mine getting it in october :)... im getting the SE LUX 2.0 model in soul red crystal :) cant wait. fantastic video btw buddy. subbed and liked m8
Please let me know if you ever have any problems with it because I’m highly considering one. Thanks and Congrats
Of course the fuel level and range are going to be different.
The level is the physical level measured from a float in the tank.
While the fuel range is calculated based on fuel consumption and fuel level.
Seriously good looking car. I love the manual option. Imagine if it had the turbo engine or the Miata Engine
miata engine? that's weaker
hands down the most reliable vehicle i've ever owned. i've got a 2012 mazda 3 with over 230,000 miles on it. haven't done much to it. shocks breaks and changing fluids. still the original clutch.
Same experience... Put over 200k on my '07 with only unexpected repair being an AC compressor around 125k. Have 115k on my early production '14 with no issues other than a broken sunroof switch and center console hinge.
Awesome Video!
Tommy can you do a roller test on the 2019 Toyota rav4 Hybrid AWD as well on video.
👌😁✌
Would also suggest that engine is too underpowered for the front-biased AWD to send enough power to just one back wheel at low revs.
That's what I was wondering about.
Now all it needs is a 300+hp minimum and a proper differential and call it the speed3
It needs more space too. It needs more refinement and noise cancellation that the Honda excels.
It's *Probably giving enough "drive" to the rear,* but it's all going to the which ever rear wheel, that is on the rollers. I think mazda started using pretty good front to rear Couplers, but need a Rear right to left Coupler or LSD. I Doubt, they would spend more money on that, so simulated LSD By independent wheel Brakes would work well. 😉
Needs a rotary
@@Derkenblosh2
You will NEVER see the rotory again except in a hybrid system as an alternative power unit. Rotory's cannot pass emissions in America. Now you can get the RX-9 in Australia and Japan and maybe even Europe. But you will NEVER see one in America.
William Su well here’s the thing it’s not a speed 3 it’s a Mazda 3, a Econ car.
Took my Mazda 3 in to be serviced at Mazda today and got this car as a loaner until they finish servicing my car. It’s actually a nice car I like the interior and features
Good review Tommy.
Since you brought up the look of the rear hatch...to me it resembles the AMC Gremlin.
Hell no ! The gremlin was totally squared and this is a beauty .
fernando cavazos closer to the Pacer.
They should put the 2.5l turbo 4 cylinder and bring back the Speed 3, being the best new handling hot hatch to date!
Hmm sounds like a Subaru...
Shit car
@Iedy Iedy
The GT Reserve and Signature Mazda 6 has the 2.5T in it now, as of 2018. The 2019 CX-5 Signature also has the 2.5T in it.
Thank you for the details on the traction control the one at 9:25 was very helpful for understanding what to expect :) Much appreciated !
Does anyone know if more throttle would have helped engage the rear wheel on the 3 wheel slip test ?
you're right on the money with the review, this is a very nice hatch
That is a *THICC* c-pillar.
As an owner of one of these AWD models since early May, I have to agree with everything said on this video. Spot on. Great car overall, improved in almost every way... except for fuel economy and power. Both of which are noticeably down from my 2016 Mazda3 GT. Not horribly so, but still a bit disappointing.
Randy Ross Yeah I don’t know why that is. I’d like somebody from Mazda to explain why the SkyActiv 2.5 engine has gotten slower and less fuel efficient over the past few years. My 2015 Mazda 6 has this same engine and it accelerates faster and gets better fuel economy than the newer 6’s. It’s rated at 25/37 but I can get as high as 39 at times.
It's because it's really a refresh. Same exact hard points as the outgoing model
@@bobbowie9350 Regardless, it's only 170 pounds heavier than my 2016. Yet it feels slower than the heavier CX-5 with the same drivetrain. And my fuel economy has shown to be 25% higher too. Maybe Mazda messed up the tuning on some of these new 3's?
Great job reviewer!

9:45 for the AWD test
Cool roller test. I haven't seen that test before.
I had a Speed6, I imagine a turbo AWD 3 would be similar, but waaaay more refined. I will say that the AWD system in the 6 was prohibitively expensive to fix when it broke, which it did twice in the 4 years I owned it.
This must be Mazda 3 test number 213 on UA-cam...
and you are still here, so it was worth it
They also cheapened the rear suspension this generation. Switched from a multilink irs to a torsion beam.
As an engineer, the less moving parts you have the less likely things can go wrong that goes with every mechanical gadget you buy. Checkout driven and the other different car reviewers that actually talked to them. Being biased is easy being objective is hard
@@aricasual3522 they cheaped out and put that money somewhere else. See Savage Geese
You don't feel it though. Coming from an frs this thing handles great for what it is.

excellent review
The speaker grills look identical to the ones in Volvo’s lol
And the price is in the same range as Volvo.... oh WAIT!
18:22 You're making Mazda depressed
All good points, and overall a solid review. Some constructive criticism; stay on target. I was getting whiplash from going to the interior, to the traction test, back to the exterior, and back again to the interior again. I think you did this as a means of not letting the review linger on any one section too long, but this was just a tad bit too much. Keep it up though Tommy! You have a good eye for the things that matter.
I'm so ready for an AWD Mazdaspeed3
Suddenly not having a turbo is a bad thing? Like people are actually looking forward to replacing a turbo down the road?
@Joseph Gross They're only going to make a Speed3 if Mazda see's a market for it. Its the same reason why the Evo isn't made anymore, not enough people bought em, and its also why Subaru has been so lazy to develop a new engine for the STI.
we're not all Rich car reviewers.. Cost matter to a great many people in the Real world..
Watching this 3 years later with my 2023 turbo AWD lol the fact that the lack of turbo was the only problem is exactly right
You're also at ~5300' elevation around boulder where you're reviewing this car. Still not that fast of a car but the altitude has a decent effect.
He said “performance car” LOL
Ya....I LOL'd at that one.
ALMOST looks as nice as an Infiniti Q30/QX30
yes, it looks litle lije a q30
To me the Mazda’s design is easier on the eyes. It’s smoother. The Infiniti seems jagged
And costs about half as much
I.agree. That's a good looking car.
I don't know much about modding, but I imagine that when they put the newer version of their naturally aspirated 2.5 liter engine under the hood, adding their own turbo unit after-market shouldn't be too difficult.
