This is why we can't have nice things is an irregular retrospective series talking about games which were sadly overlooked and did not enjoy commercial success.
In this episode we'll be discussing the last game Clover Studios ever made, God Hand for the Playstation 2.
That IGN review is single handedly responsible for me discarding any interest in this game and never purchasing it. I've learned alot since then.
It's on their top games of all time list now. Pretty sure the guy who did the original review was fired.

How smart of you to go by one person's a opinion, especially someone you don't know. Lost all interest? Then you basically either thought "this guy doesn't like it, and it is impossible for anyone to disagree with IGN", or "IGN is ALWAYS right".

This game is like a Drill Sergeant. It will insult and mock and belittle you whenever you fail. If you succeed, at first it'll seem sincere...but it's mocking you. It's mocking you until the day comes when it has molded you into a badass ass-kicking super soldier. On that day, all that derision and hate becomes pride and respect for not what you became, but what it knew you were.
TL;DR: Godhand is fucking awesome.
and the soundtrack just adds to that feeling... i unironically play the main song from time to time.

I played this game with my first girlfriend. She wouldn't let me stop playing because she was enjoying watching so much. She literally refused to leave the house until I completed the game. That's how entertaining this game is.

The game is absolutly blast to play. Great, great game... it kicked my balls many times... very hard... but I enjoyed it.

god damn it, it seems like any game where you just beat the shit out of a bunch of people, no matter how fun, ign just shits all over it. they like games that are only good for 1 playthrough and good storys, good/fun gameplay be damned by them.

This holds a special place in my heart. This game is ridiculously difficult but I love it for that. You think just because you have the limb of a God taking down dozens of crooks will be a breeze? Hah! I didn't even survive against 3 tough schmucks at the same time.
Thank you for letting so many people know about this gem of a game that they unfortunately missed out on. RIP King.

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you. I watched this video years ago when it came out and it changed my life. It was you who introduced me to God Hand. I bought the game. Watched the Kung Fu Jesus gameplay of it and I became determined to master the game. I was obsessed with the game and this video. I got good at it and then put it down when the game wasn't enough anymore and started working on a comic inspired by my gaming experience and imagination.
Years later and I'm finally finishing it up and I love the outcome, but I'm not afraid of criticism. I welcome it. How can I improve if I cannot take critique? You taught me that. And thank you for that too. I'm working tirelessly to meet the high expectations you would have had on a product. And even more so I will be open minded about feedback.
But it wouldn't have been possible without you. I wish I told you how much your words inspired me I was a nobody (still am) and didn't think my words would be of worth to you. Now I regret it.

I wished Platinum Games could buy the rights for God Hand and Okami from Capcom because Capcom won't do anything with those licenses anyway.

This game is hard to love, but harder to hate. One moment you're getting your ass wrecked, then they throw shit like a _wrestling gorilla_ or an _80's hair metal band_ for bosses. Then said ridiculous bosses wreck your shit.
I'm not sure if I discovered God Hand thanks to TotalBiscuit, but I'm sure it got my attention thanks to him. This is now one of my absolute favourite games ever. Aside from the gameplay being excellent, of course, the music and personality the game has are great. But even more than that, I think my favourite part are the animations. They show so much personality, so much impact. How the enemies and you stagger. It's incredible. Thank you John for showing me such an excellent game, along with many others.

I think I was the only one in my area that actually bought this game when it came out. I remember how hard it was, especially when I got to the first boss, until I realized and saw the motioned for their attacks the enemies all had. THEN I began to truly own the bad guys, especially when it comes to button mashing. I could take out a LOT of their hearth from that, though my thumbs were always sore from it. And... it was also hard to explain to my parents when they walked into the living room why I was spanking a half naked woman.
I never regretted getting this game, and I am proud to say that I beat it in a few days. It is hard, fair, and is so over the top that it's brilliant. It's just sad that it did so poorly in sales when it did so much right.

As soon as I beat the game, it became an instant favorite for me. And I was only ten! How do some people complain about the difficulty? It's not like the game was on DIE the whole time; it's exactly like what was said in the video. The game adapts to your level of play.
I know this is late but a lot of people that play this game said it was hard even on easy mode. So this game is one of the hardest game ever but at the same time it's fun.
OMG I remember how I used to play this like crazy on PS2. I've completely forgot about this master piece, untill now.
Never heard of the game, but based on what I understand of the make your own personal combos and attack styles is the missing link to solving the riddle of the next revolution of brawler games. WHY IS NO ONE FUNDING THIS!!!!!

Personally I see Asura's Wrath as the spirit successor to God Hand. They both give off a similar, utterly insane vibe. Although God Hand was a touch more.. adult with its themes.
I always feel sad when i remember God hand wasn't a commercial success. It's one of the best games I've ever played. I'll personally rate it above games like Kingdom hearts, MGS, GTA. To tell you how much i appreciate this game. I wish it gets a sequel and the deserved recognition through a remake

Long time ago I bought it by chance, and thought: "Oh well, it's been a long time I don't spend money on something I haven't got the slightest idea of what is it, so, let's make it then", turns out that I found out I'm really good on finding some nice shit (good shit, of course) like this.
Man, I just love this game, the graphics aren't that awesome, but, c'mon, who the fuck cares? If someone does, that one should be watching a movie, not playing a game! Playing a game is about - believe it or not - playing.
Wow, I got recommended an 8 year old video...I love God Hand, and I don't think I'll ever forgive IGN for what they did to Lucky Clover. This game is awesome, and pretty hard too

I have this game and love it. I don't listen to anyone's opinions and input I follow me. And it's a good thing I follow me because I would have missed this hidden gem.

I personally consider Bayonetta the spiritual successor to Devil May Cry. But anyway, the dissolution of Clover was the first of a series of bad decisions by Capcom. The 3 best guys in Capcom, 2 of whom were Hideki Kamiya and Shinji Mikami (legendary names, these), were handling Clover, so I can't even begin to imagine what the hell was going through the heads of Capcom when they decided 'hey, we have the best game designers/directors in the history of gaming but because they made games that don't sell, we don't want them' and dissolved Clover. Sega's gain, I guess.

This is one of my favorite games and i'm grateful that people like you are around to at least try make people realize what good games they've been missing because of terrible, terrible reviews (and reviewers alike). And let me say that you are doing all of us a favor when showing all these great games that went unnoticed for stupid reasons. Please do more of this series!

I still play God Hand to this very day! Amazing beat em up video game and honestly my favorite along side Devil May Cry 3. The fighting, the grinding to get money, the comedy, the music, the upgrades and etc never gets old. Disappointed it got a (UNFAIR)) bad rep, a God Hand 2 would've been great to see. A criticism I seen was "it's too hard" what? That's what video games should be about in my opinion, a challenge that's make you feel awesome after finally beating it.
This game is so fucking fantastic, and so is Bayonetta.
Bayonetta, to me, is the love child of this and Devil May Cry. Platinum Games knows what the hell they're doing.
I remember finishing this game with a borrowed PS2 in the late 2000s. I've seen this video plenty of times, just to remember the feel of it. I honestly can't remember if I even played well, I just wanted for it to end, and as it did, it was kind of comforting. I'm still friends with the guy that let me borrow his PS2, and now I bought one myself so we can play some of those games again. Good times.

I think the reason Okami is regarded as their best is because it was great as a sense that its story was deeply structured while, as I take your word, God Hand had terrible dialogue and its plot was nonsense. IGN rated Okami fairly highly, 9/10 if I recall, which makes me believe that besides bought reviews, their main concern for a game is the story.
Story isn't all that should matter in a game. Gameplay should always be the number one aspect. Plus it's Clover. Who eventually became Platinum games. Their games are fun enough that they can do whatever they want with the story.
NBLRMT I think there should be a balance between story, gameplay and graphics (within the console capacities and the presentation goal). Of course this balance is relative to the genre.
CaitSeith I can honestly say, though, that Bayonetta, Vanquish, The Wonderful 101, and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance are some of my favorite games, and I don't remember an iota of the story. I guess some people favor story, but for me, it's the fun gameplay that keeps the game fresh. A good story with shit gameplay would just bore me eventually.
Well, God Hand's story was supposed to be silly and over the top abnoxious.
I think it's unfair to put the whole company on blast for a few bad reviews over the years. Different reviewers come and go, and each has his or her own interpretation of what makes a good game. I don't think they have policies like "Give extra points to games with good stories", or "Feel free to trash games for no good reason if they're not AAA titles."
I watched a incredible God Hand compilation from a fella who'd played it for 10 years and it is so stylish, definitely worth a search. It was mind blowing! I have just gotten into Returnal and that has a similar risk reward system that gives it that one more play adrenaline buzz. We gamers must support these games for future releases.
Take it from an old gamer who's first console was a NES. Games are really important, they craft memories and emotions. It's a amazing art is a great video game.

I never was much for challenging games during the ps2 era but i got hooked on "hard" in every game ive pkayed after beating this. It feels so good.

Shinji Mikami, one of the creators and productors of one of the most ( if not the most ) greatest survival horror game of all time: Resident Evil, now director of the hyped The Evil Within. He's the director of this game, so yeah, this game is awesome

ooo such an old game. one of the best game I ever played and funny as hell as well. For me demon soul is harder than this game, but I must say that I've played this long time ago when I was young and maybe now I lost some of my patient. But this game brilliant.
Just to remember that there are so many games that didn't make it to the majority hearts. Keep that video series up 'cause these games deserve to be looked up, at least.

I play this during PS2 era, immediatly after it come out. Back then i never care about any review( thank God for that ), i buy this because clover studio also make VJ1 and 2 who btw is also an amazing games.
This games is amazing, i have a blast more than any interactive movie action games we have nowadays. People who don't like it's probably the same why they don't like dark souls, they don't like it because they suck at gaming and only like games like this : Press shoot/attack button to win, press shoot/attack button repeatedly to win with full live without taking any single damage in the entire games

Shinji Mikami directed 3 of the best 3D third person action games ever made with RE4, God Hand, and Vanquish. It's a damn shame God Hand and Vanquish never got popular enough to make an impact on the industry, instead in the current gen 90% of action games are either action-rpg/soul likes, roguelikes, or Sony cinematic open-world overrated rpg-lite games. Modern games also hide core mechanics behind upgrades and leveling, so the true game isn't revealed until the end or on new game plus. God Hand, RE4, Vanquish, DMC, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, MGR and others give you that vertical slice moment either right away or within the first 30 mins.
One of the best games I've played.
