Oh god, hands down one of those hidden gems of a game. I remember back when my brother, my cousin and I would go into our local Electronic Boutique games store and seeing this game sitting around on the shelf for the longest time ever. I will admit that we did not pay two shits about it because the cover art of the game looked rather bland, had no flare and we just shrugged it off like a crappy 3rd party generic beat'em up game. Little did we know, it was quite the grave mistake we made. Fast-forward a bit till we picked up Okami, playing it, finished it and fallen deeply in love with it. Thats when we decided to try and find more games made by Clover Studios. Looked up to only find a few games: Viewtiful Joe plus its sequel and God Hand.. then it all came back to us. We're like: Oh really? This game with the cover art? I then proceeded to watch the trailers & its ending for God Hand and instantly fall in love with all its corniness. The very next day we went to go pick it up and played it until we beat it. No joke the game was indeed hard along with its tank-like controls of the 'over the shoulder' 3rd person view which had some getting use to but we pressed on because it was just so fun. Eventually we finished it and watched the ending in person. It was Glorious!
Watching my brother beat this game and seeing that ending credits song, unspoiled, for the first time is up there in my all time favorite gaming moments.
The song during the end credits of God Hand is absolutely one of the *best* I've ever heard in a game (and hilarious too). To anyone reading this, I'll say you should play through the game and earn the end credits yourself, buuut... at least look it up on UA-cam if you haven't heard it and can't fight through to finish the game. Edit: link to the song/credits ua-cam.com/video/SFSen7DRQWU/v-deo.html
Always wondered why I never got this game as a kid. Then you mentioned all its competition and I remember having Bully, Okami, and Final Fantasy 12. So yeah, that's probably why. Too bad.
thank you austin! my favorite game ever, i dont say this lightly. i freaking ADORE this game(and the fact my first acid trip was spent playing this game is just icing on this glorious cake)
I think there's also a discussion to be had about the concept of a review being "wrong", as well as the notion that it's ok to knock a game for being too easy but not for being too difficult.
ArgyleMonkey Ya, reviews can't be "wrong" as they're opinions, but opinions can bill Ill informed. I don't see anything wrong with knocking points off for a game being too hard, especially if the audience they have cultivated does not typically consume difficult games. It's the same with linear games being a bad thing, why? Why is linear story telling a bad thing?
You know, for a short while, I remember people theorizing Gene was going to be in DMC5, based on the artwork that had been released (mainly the sleeveless coat V is wearing) since we didn't know who V even was at that point.

I only discovered God Hand when i saw Vash12345 play the game and i freaking LAUGHED MY ASS OFF when i saw the video part, which referenced the Rick James "What did the five fingers say to the face?" joke and thats when i decided to play the game myself, before that i didnt even knew it existed. Man i still wished they would give us a sequel or reboot. Such a hard but amazing game.
Can we just get a God Hand remastered please Capcom? Also this is before everyone on the net collectively hailed Dark Souls as the savior of all gaming. Just show you how ahead Clover was in their games
I bought God Hand day one based on the main trailer and the one gameplay video. Even at the time, I never bothered with review sites and bought stuff based on a developer's past reputation or word of mouth from others I knew has the same taste in games. Sites like IGN and Gamspot were garbage and it sucked that people took their word as law.
Glad Austin didn't just spend the video shitting on IGN or the critic who made that review. Worse UA-camrs would gladly do that for views. This video had more nuance over that review than I expected.
"Clover Studio gave the player a ton of options" So there you go. The adaptive difficulty is inherently an easy and hard mode. It modifies the challenge level to allow a broader audience to enjoy the game. The complaints going around are regarding games that purposefully make themselves hard enough that the majority of people who play video games won't even be able to complete them. Asking for additional options or difficulty levels to assist with that isn't people whining, it is to allow the majority of people to play. Unless the developers are directly saying they want a minimum of people to buy their game.
I honestly believe 4chan had a large hand in letting a lot of people know about how glorious God Hand was. I remember there being a thread about the game almost daily for months on /v/ back in the late 2000's. Man... now I miss those early days of 4chan... when it wasn't as much of a heaping pile of garbage and toxicity.
This and Tekken were the games of my childhood. Gave me the power to press things really fast. Also, the casino in this game and the chihuahua race were amazing.
I remembered I laugh so hard while playing God Hands. I do find it hard but not toward the controller because PS2 era they have that Anna game and Monster Hunter that uses analog stick to attack so it doesn't troubled me to an extend.
Watching you stream this game was probably the most fun I've had in a while. I was skeptical at first, but after a while, I came to really enjoy this game. I've been looking forward to this video ever since that final stream, and while it was disappointing that it couldn't be out on March 10th like you'd said on stream, I think it was well worth the wait. Keep up the good work, man!
This is probably my favorite video you have ever made for a multitude of reasons, some of which being your very nice taste in games mentioned. Thank you for this video, God Hand really deserves better.
God Hand is one of my favorite video games of all time. The gameplay alone is so difficult but very rewarding when you get the hang of it. It would be awesome if Capcom would maybe do a God Hand remake using the RE engine
You missed out I was a kid when God Hand came out and the first review I saw of it was from one of the best writers in the UK Robert Florence on his and Ryan McLeod's show Videogaiden. He gave it an incredible review again showing how the smaller actual analysis and smart shows will always be ahead of the massive names when it comes to quality reviews.
Oh boy. Watching talentless hacks who get payed to mislead their consumers and ceasely inject their politics into a hobby that is only negatively affected by them. What fun.
I still miss EGM. Sometimes they annoyed me (like constantly ragging on Shadow the Hedgehog when they themselves gave it a 5 or 6, which is simply average) but most of the time their reviews were blunt but fair. Level Die? Wait...in Japan, the number 4 is pronounced the same as “death”, making it an unlucky number. Level Die is the fourth level...so it’s actually a Japanese pun XP
I was a professional game journalist for 8 years - 1999-2003 at Game Informer, 2003-2007 as freelancer for a variety of outlets. I took my job seriously; those I worked with did, too. That doesn’t mean there weren’t shitty reviews or controversies. We had tough deadlines and brought our own tastes into things. But I think everyone was doing their best. I personally loved turning people on to games they may have otherwise ignored. As games evolved past 16-bit, titles became less mass-appeal, general audience games. More games were quirky or got different reactions. It was a good time - post-cartridge, pre-HD. Since HD became the standard, games are much more expensive and time-consuming to make, so less risks are taken. You have AAA and you have indies. Games like Okami or Viewtiful Joe or Godhand (which I never liked) probably wouldn’t be made, unless by a small independent studio. Anyway, just wanted to chime in. Thanks to anyone who read this. I still love games!
I don’t even know how I got my hands on this game back in 2012 with no knowledge of its existence, but I’m soo glad I got to experience it . Definitely need a rerelease or a new one
@Tom The Fish You say that bit we got Metal Wold Chaos and that game is literally about making america great again by killing every single libtard on the planet and mexicans.
Reviews were the same reason I didn’t pick up “God Hand” back in the day and I’ve always regretted it. (I was in college when it came out and had a pretty limited gaming budget).
Austin, I'd like to give you a huge thank you for introducing me to this game. God Hand has become one of my all-time favorite games, and I wouldn't have tried it out if it wasn't for watching your video. As a whole, I'd like to think you contributed to me discovering how great Clover Studios was as a company, and by extension, Platinum. A true gem, that team.
Godhand isn't only one of my favourites PS2 games, it's one of my favs of all time. Sure, it got some problems... part of the difficult of the game comes from the too close over the shoulder camera that makes real hard to defend against enemies attacking from behind, and all the jankyness on the lock on system, but if you can get through it Godhand gives you one of the best action oriented game experiences akin to classics like DMC 3 and Bayonetta. I find funny cause one of my friends worked on the gaming journalism scene back then and he hated not only the score given to Godhand, but he hated even more how many people years later gave it this cult status, even though many of then were responsible for the low scores. I really wish someday Godhand gets a sequel or a spiritual sucessor, cause it deserves a second take with modern elements with better graphics, camera work and controls. It's difficult system should be more used nowadays, like Resident Evil 4 has shown too. Austin, only some notes dude: -Actually increasing the difficult level isn't simply punishing. Enemies also drop better loot on higher levels, and that's the fastest way to get some of the best moves in the game. -The Midget team are not exactly a direct reference to Viewtiful Joe, but more likely to be a parody of a Super Sentai (aka original japanese Power Rangers). Super Sentai is a tokusatsu, japanese tradicional live action hero tv programs. Other tokusatsu series include Kamen Raider/Masked Raider, that is more likely the inspiration behind Viewtiful Joe (with a mix of Shazam style super family).
Honestly, thanks for making this video. This game is soooo underrated, and was undeservingly badly reviewed because of those jerks at IGN. This game was and still is one of the best games I have ever played. Honestly, better than a lot of Capcom games. The internet and these companies have killed one of my amazing and forever great game God Hand
You should do how Madden gets great scores while the gameplay, game physics, visuals and over all quality has been declining since Madden 05. Sad that NCAA football 14 is worth more than most Madden games.
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster back in like 2007 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I only had it for a week, but I got the control scheme down and bout ruined my right wrist trying to beat the second to last boss. BTW, the soundtrack to this game is a gloriously cheesy surf rock disaster and I love it.
"i sucked back then and even now as an adult i still kinda suck at it" the most relatable comment about this beautiful game. You're either have a gift to play it or suck forever.

It was Glorious!

also Hokuto no Ken, Yattaman, etc...

Edit: link to the song/credits

Fun fact: Gene was actually planned to be in Marvel vs Capcom but replace by Amaterasu from Okami.

@@brosephnoonan223 I must object and argue with an 12/10 best game I have ever played
@@brosephnoonan223 Nah
It really hurts that this game never had the chance to be made for PC. I love it so much!
Adding this to my list of fav videos you've made up there with Mystical Ninja Goemon and Bomberman 64.
I think there's also a discussion to be had about the concept of a review being "wrong", as well as the notion that it's ok to knock a game for being too easy but not for being too difficult.
ArgyleMonkey
Ya, reviews can't be "wrong" as they're opinions, but opinions can bill Ill informed. I don't see anything wrong with knocking points off for a game being too hard, especially if the audience they have cultivated does not typically consume difficult games. It's the same with linear games being a bad thing, why? Why is linear story telling a bad thing?
I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3
You know, for a short while, I remember people theorizing Gene was going to be in DMC5, based on the artwork that had been released (mainly the sleeveless coat V is wearing) since we didn't know who V even was at that point.
Woulda been a funny crossover. As a secret boss? Id be down.
Dante, Nero or V getting the "ball buster".
Jeez...
Lol Gene being a secret easter egg Character could had worked wonderfully in DMC V.
@@brosephnoonan223 True. Him as a secret boss would have been really awesome. Sadly probably too few people would have gotten the reference though...
Damn.. Whenever DMC 5 dlc or the special edition comes out I really want him to be in it now.. Though most likely what's up next is Lady, Trish and Vergil dlc

Loved it. Still own both the original and doubled down on the classic version on PSN. I hated every reviewer ragging on Godhand back in the day... They just missed the point.
If I had to make a list of the best action games of all time, God Hand would be right up there with DMC3, DMC5, and Bayonetta
In the rush of the PS3 store closing, I ended up buying god hand on the PSN store. Thank you for introducing it to me!
I remember my dad buying me Godhand lol even now as an adult I can't believe how insane that game was.
About that not packing much heat line, I think that's a nod to the fact that if you try the Ball Buster on Mr. Silver, it won't work.

Its a weird experience when you, on a whim, decide to listen to the gran turismo 4 ost, only to hear a track again in a neat video by a cool dude.

Enjoyed the video as well.
Have a great rest of your day.

Thank you for making a video about God Hand. It's not perfect, but I love it. I go back to it every few years.
according super best friend the "easy" difficulty in the game was "normal" in japan
I bought God Hand day one based on the main trailer and the one gameplay video. Even at the time, I never bothered with review sites and bought stuff based on a developer's past reputation or word of mouth from others I knew has the same taste in games. Sites like IGN and Gamspot were garbage and it sucked that people took their word as law.
i think the best way to describe the game feel is Resi4-like movement and camera +quick time events, mixed with a complex 3d beat 'em up.
Glad Austin didn't just spend the video shitting on IGN or the critic who made that review. Worse UA-camrs would gladly do that for views.
This video had more nuance over that review than I expected.
"Clover Studio gave the player a ton of options"
So there you go.
The PSO sound effects right off the back almost gave me a heart attack from the sadness I felt remembering all the memories
It should be illegal to make a Godhand video without showing Mike Kob footage
Is he still making videos. He's the on that inspired me to start playing the game after 5 years of giving up on it.
@@jetstreamdefalpha5411 yes
Yeeeeeaahahhhhh so right
This is probably my favorite video you have ever made for a multitude of reasons, some of which being your very nice taste in games mentioned.
Game Informer is doing a hilarious Full playthrough of this game, God Hand - Super Replay i highly recommend.
Oh boy. Watching talentless hacks who get payed to mislead their consumers and ceasely inject their politics into a hobby that is only negatively affected by them.
What fun.
Dude I love it when people talk about good ps2 games I've never heard of. They are gems that must be treasured.
I bought a sealed copy of God Hand
No regrets

You`re the man!
God hand on PS4 pleeeeeease I would honestly shed a tear remembering playing at my buddy's house
Your use of tracks from the PSO ost made me have to comment - along with the great vid. Nice work.
Why not like God Hand? Was it too hard for you lame ass?
I don’t even know how I got my hands on this game back in 2012 with no knowledge of its existence, but I’m soo glad I got to experience it . Definitely need a rerelease or a new one
I'm gonna flip out if it ever gets a remake/remaster or port on current gen consoles and pc.
Truly a cult classic.
@Tom The Fish
You say that bit we got Metal Wold Chaos and that game is literally about making america great again by killing every single libtard on the planet and mexicans.
Reviews were the same reason I didn’t pick up “God Hand” back in the day and I’ve always regretted it. (I was in college when it came out and had a pretty limited gaming budget).
GOD HAND + noob gamer playing god hand + review = disaster. i really love this game even the control scheme its fkng unique.
Austin, only some notes dude:
-Actually increasing the difficult level isn't simply punishing.
Welcome back Clover… or should I say, Clovers.
Let’s just hope that extra “s” makes it an “Aliens”, and not a “Predators”
Honestly, thanks for making this video. This game is soooo underrated, and was undeservingly badly reviewed because of those jerks at IGN. This game was and still is one of the best games I have ever played. Honestly, better than a lot of Capcom games. The internet and these companies have killed one of my amazing and forever great game God Hand
You should do how Madden gets great scores while the gameplay, game physics, visuals and over all quality has been declining since Madden 05. Sad that NCAA football 14 is worth more than most Madden games.
I really loved God Hand but lets be honest. The real masterpiece here is Imagine party babyz.
😂🤣😂
I remember the learning curve for this game is beating it the first time
So tired of hearing things being offensive instead of just taking things at face value
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster back in like 2007 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I only had it for a week, but I got the control scheme down and bout ruined my right wrist trying to beat the second to last boss. BTW, the soundtrack to this game is a gloriously cheesy surf rock disaster and I love it.
funny how the ending song of God Hand sounds like Mazinger Z opening

Damn, I’ve been meaning to play something absurd yet entertaining. Really great video dude!
"IGN is the only site I trust for review scores" Well, that's not dated at all.
I remember pre-ordering Godhand, and enjoying it. It's pretty much the reason I always read reviews with a grain of salt.
Man the more I hear about God Hand, the more Absolver feels like a fusion of it and Dark Souls.. Just way less hard..
"i sucked back then and even now as an adult i still kinda suck at it"
the most relatable comment about this beautiful game. You're either have a gift to play it or suck forever.
God Hand is a beautiful weird piece of art. Games like this is why I love video games. Something like God Hand could not be done in any other medium.
New idea for a show. It's called "Better Than God Hand", where you play all the shitty games that are "still better than God Hand".
