In NO WAY am I trying to excuse Billie's actions throughout this show - she's the one that started the downfall of her own life, it's just clear that the writing is trying to make us find the stuff Cooper does worse so we sympathize more with Billie as the narrator... until the end where it all goes up in flames.

The main character is beyond repulsive. Cheating on your spouse shouldn’t be romanticized and it ESPECIALLY shouldn’t be labeled as “feminism”. Nothing about this screams feminist to me or any other sane woman. Billie doesn’t respect herself at all and chooses to only hyperfocus on the sexual aspect of the relationship seeing how she chases after an absolute trash of a human being that is Brad. Cooper has done some questionable shit throughout the series, but in comparison he’s nowhere near as bad as those two and can be (somewhat) redeemed. Brad and Billie deserve each other seeing how shitty they are as human beings. What’s with media’s obsession with glamorizing cheating anyway?

@@PatriciaSmyle the way Billie’s actions were portrayed (especially in the last episode) made me think that they were not only trying to justify her actions, but frame it as feminism. Yeah, Billie does show SOME remorse, but the way they’re trying to demonize Cooper for doing the exact same thing is what got to me. Writers are trying to make the audience sympathize with Billie and root for her, while she keeps destroying her marriage and actively harming her spouse - that’s why I think they’re glamorizing the entire ordeal

I didn’t watch the show, but these are some things I took from it:
    1. Cooper has *major* self-esteem issues definitely not helped by his wife messing with his head by writing about her wild, sex-filled past.
    2. Does Billie even respect herself? Why would she still want someone who had treated her so poorly?
    3. It appears that Cooper’s infidelity is framed as the bad thing that it is while the ending scene of Billie going to Brad is framed as something of a girl power moment? Why? Adultery is horrible no matter what.
    4. Having fantasies about your past is one thing. Getting yourself and other caught in this tangled web of toxicity is another.

I can aswer number 3. Its Netflix and its female production. So it will always be bad if a guy does it and always be good if a girl does it. Its even framed as a good thing "OMG girl you have 85% of your needs taken care, that is not enough you need 100%". They were also very careful that no matter how horrible she was and was her thats causing troubles(talking to ex, jerking off on him fucking her best friend) it was always her husband who crossed the line first. He wants his Boss, he gets BJ at the party etc. Its a basic problem that Netflix and even other productions today have now. They look at it through "Twitter lens" so no matter how horrible female is, male needs to be worse. For other examples see "I Care a Lot". No matter how a monster of a female character is, its always framed as she is in the right.

    • @lastquarter3992

@@johnsnow04 See, about the 85% thing, I could be fine with it if it were framed correctly. Like, saying "Maybe you and your husband should try therapy to fix that issue or get a divorce if you feel like this isn't a fulfilling relationship" could be an alright message. Here though it's "get both girl. Keep your husband for the stability and cheat on him at every turn for the spiciness". Trust is thrown out the window, it's disgusting.

@@johnsnow04 I don’t think the mostly female production is really all to blame for this trash. There have been plenty of trashy shows and movies made by predominantly men or just normal men/women crews. I do agree there is a weird blind spot in how current media portrays adultery with men vs women, where it’s always bad with men but with women there can be “exceptions.” Hopefully writers will soon realize that this is stupid, but it’s a bit of a generalization to say the trash story is only because of the predominantly female crew, rather than the shitty writing of a few individuals who happen to be female. Also “I care a lot” was pretty clear cut in how shitty the protagonist was, she’s a classic anti hero, walter white, anyone? Tony Soprano? Don Draper? Dexter? And the protagonist of I care a lot literally gets her just desserts at the end, ignoring the fact that the whole movie is pretty much about her downfall. Awful people being the main character of a piece of media (both of high and low quality) is not an invention of feminism, as much as people would like to believe.

@@Onnarashi uhm, I think you're using selective facts to try to say women do this to themselves when men do it to women as well. In fact, ever thought that women directors know the toxic market well enough that they just continue the sexist themes? Afterall, if you're being sexualized and discriminated on because of your gender why not take advantage of the system that was originally created by men?
You seem to have forgotten that there's an entire porn market for men that have themes of cheating, SA, kidnapping, etc. I don't actually care if that's your kink and you want to jerk off to it as long as you don't act on it. This show is just like a porno with just as bad of a storyline. It's just being marketed on a public streaming service and somehow that upsets you. Somehow that brought you to the thought that women do this to themselves as you jerk it to something just as bad.
Additionally, it doesn't even take a few minutes to search up sexist male directors who are probably under scrutiny for SAing female actresses during filming. Furthermore, all the movies you listed aren't that popular amongst the public outside of teenagers and horny people. You'll find big hit movies that won awards that portray women in a disgusting light created by male directors who are complimented for their work to this day. Films that are basically pedophilic in nature, but are disregarded for the times. These themes are equally disgusting and it doesn't matter what gender you are as a director and it honestly is maddening that you chose to focus on the gender of the directors rather than just pointing out the theme is toxic. I didn't think I would have to say this, but these toxic themes are represented from directors of both sexes.

I would like to add to that: “If you can’t resist the urge to put it in writing, be sure to never save it and to destroy it immediately so that no one ever reads it.” I did this once and I’m so glad I destroyed it, because even though it was enjoyable to write my feelings down at the time, those feelings changed and it became as unpleasant as the scent of skunk spray. From my point of view, my life would have been permanently scarred if I had shared it with anyone, which I wanted to do at the time.

But yeah, never keep the writing. You don't keep and store your vomit after getting sick. Get it out of your system, clean up after yourself and move on!

I kinda disagree. All the awful people out there who do stupid things for no reason should be dumb, should keep putting it (and keeping it) in writing, and should get the consequences. And one should generally speaking, aspire to be open. There are exceptions and there is judgement, but there's also a sense of pride to be had from being okay with being 'dumb' about who you tell stuff to. 'Cos if you're worth not getting in trouble for it, then you'll just not do the bad things, right? And when you do the bad things, own it and deserve it.
The adjustments come from people (and systems, and conventions) having different morals to each other, of course. One person thinks something's really bad when it really isn't, etcetera. So yeah you still think on it and make calls. But in a more macro sense, I don't like the idea of being proud of being clever about it. Like to at least aim in the more plain direction. Even from a self-interested standpoint, think about the practical erosion of your psyche, to be constantly aware that you deserve worse. I prefer to deserve better, which means accepting whatever worse I deserved for whichever things I did. Less inner baggage.
I don't keep a diary. Just never a habit I could get into, not my thing. But I've done plenty of spilling online and while I do delete some sometimes, I like to think there are reasons outside of image sculpting when I do.

    1. Why do these guys fight so hard for this woman? She's pretty but seems to have the Twilight problem where the female lead, in the words of Kennie JD, has the personality of lawn clippings. Why is she worth fighting for?
    2. As a parent i have to know, how does she have the time/energy for all this while looking after a baby? When my child was this age, i barely had the strength to shower, let alone journal, scheme, and fuck around. And i didn't have a second kid that is the age when they will definitely try to climb up the chandelier, eat detergent and put the possum they found into the dishwasher for a good clean.

as for 2., Billie leaves her children with the babysitter a lot. like A LOT. i can remember one scene where she’s describing how tiring motherhood is and she’s shown taking a shower and her baby needing immediate attention so she gets out without having the time to dry herself off; she’s also up a lot of the time at night because her baby is restless so i guess that’s why she has the time to write in the journal? but yes it all seems very unrealistic. point 3. is what cracks me up because billie actually is getting her PHD in psychology and her current job is a school counselor if i remember correctly. she’s supposed to be an amazing psychologist i guess. Cooper mentions how the kids at school loved her and her friend Sasha praises her a lot for her skills as well. i think the only person who suggests therapy is Sasha, but Billie never responds to this..?? also another point i never see anyone mention is that Billie drinks alcohol while breastfeeding 😐

As for her studying psych, dunno what here goal is, but here in Hungary (as far as i know) if you want to become a licenced therapist you have to take therapy first to make sure your own shit doesn't cloud your judgement. I think it's also that it caters to the urges to be dangerous, ignore the consequences, throw caution to the weird or even be selfish and possibly villainous. Essentially it's somewhat of a power fantasy to take control of/ enjoy your life.
These are popular topics because they often play with that fine line between being a confident, standing up for yourself and believing in your own self worth and the other side where those things are either taken too far, such as tearing others down to feel above them or to act selfishly and destructively in order to have some element of control over aspects of life that people might not feel like they could have the strength to do.
The problem is that shows like this make out that this shit is justified, making it feel more like a revenge story, which is all kinds of wrong when you're basically saying it's fine to do shitty things because someone was shitty to you. It's a scarily thin line because so much of its subjective to preference and personal experience that it's kind of dangerous to treat as a generic power fantasy.
The other thing is that people just like to get off to being bad ofcourse... which I guess is better if it's left to fantasy so as much as this stuff is trash it kind of serves a purpose I guess lol.

Not the explicit rape most people think of but the not listening and continued actions that the other partner asked to stop. It's grossed me out. However, thank you for covering it! Even my morbid curiosity couldn't get me to finish the show and now I'm even happier I didn't. Thank you for your sacrifice.

None of this would have happened if Billie communicated to her husband what was wrong and together they could have fixed their sex life and marriage into something they were both happy with.
If something isn’t right with you in your relationship, the first thing you should do is talk to your partner honestly and openly. Communication is what makes or breaks any relationship.

Thank you so much for mentioning that polyamory is a valid choice if everyone involved agrees - that made me very happy 😊
Three things I would like to add:
    1. I have to say, I don't agree that it's worse than 50 shades of wtf, because even though the displayed behavior is manipulative and emotionally abusive, at the very least they don't say that being k!nky is a mental health issue that can be cured by "the one" (who of course is a woman) and there is no physical abuse per contract.
    2. Can show makers please start showing proper awareness for topics like contraception and STI-prevention?! It annoys me so much that this is still not adressed, especially in shows that focus a great deal on sex.
    3. I loved that the fact Sasha and Brad hooked up was actually not that big of a deal for Billie and didn't destroy their friendship out of misguided principles. I would've liked for them to talk about it more, but seeing that they were fine even without was really refreshing.
    Thanks for the great video!

Tbh I disagree with the third point because Brad was a horrible person. He was so inconsiderate of Billie when she had a miscarriage. And even though it has been 8 years, this can emotionally scar a person. And Sasha was so inconsiderate of Billie saying that "It has been 8 years " as if it was not a big deal. If I was in that position, I would leave that friendship. It's one thing to date the ex like it's no big deal, but if that ex was especially abusive and the friend was aware and is still bringing them back to ur life then that's very toxic.

The first 10~15 minutes of the first episode was really intriguing because the struggles of the main character was SO real, and not something you see much of from the perspective of a married woman with kids. Struggling with your sex life with a man that, on paper, is really great for you…and yet you still sit and wonder about that one person. I thought that was realistic - marriages changing after kids and getting it out via journaling. For the love of God people - if you plan on committing to someone but are not sexually fulfilled by them AND can’t tell them - that’s going to come out. Also, if they ended the series just TEN minutes earlier - it would have been a movie with a happy ending. But they need drama for season 2 so let’s go!
