@@blindeyedblightmain3565 This I can agree with. This was the point he made the first time. However, NL's clearly expanding this take beyond a person's possibilities in the dating arena. I can see the humor in some of his other "controversal" takes due to the lengths he goes to defend them when blasted by chat but this one was kinda meh. NL getting married himself as a result of k8 taking all the initiative is just the cherry on top tbh
NL sounds like a side character in a jane Austen novel, telling the protagonist that if she doesnt marry before she's 20 something she'll be an outcast lmao. Like its not a new idea, there is a name for it: spinster, he's just applying the concept to men. I know we supposedly dont judge people for that anymore, but the idea that being married/in a serious monogamous relationship is the ideal state for a person ( and the younger the better) is ingrained in society, and women are in fact judged for being single when they are old, even if it is not as polite as it once was. I think its all bullshit, and this is just applying an old sexist standard to men, and trying to justify it with some logic like: "they must be deficient in some way or not responsible" when it is in fact just a reflexive response to judge people who are outside normalcy and think they did something wrong.

My favorite Friends/NL episode: "The One Where NL Doesn't Appreciate That He Is Incredibly Blessed And It's Lowkey Mean To Say Never-Marrieds Are, Again, Living A Sad Life, Thanks"
I think the reason the bit doesn't resonate with chat is because it's punching down not punching up. In his mind he's defending divorced men, but in actuality he's taking the position of a relatively normal married man, and punching down on everyone who's not married. It's like starting a bit with "homeless people smell why is nobody talking about this?" like we get it, we don't have access to a shower (metaphorically) you don't need to point and laugh. It's not profound or interesting rhetoric, it's just hurtful to a large portion of his audience.
Yea i think you put it perfectly, all this does it put down people who are already aware that they aren't in the social norm by saying there is something wrong with them. I think your point is valid and I largely agree with the premise, but that specific example is way too drastic and isn't comparable. Homelessness is a societal flaw and not having been married is often a personal choice and if not at least is actually largely a factor of a person's own actions or choices.
Insanely interesting and funny man who managed to get a wife early doesn't realize most people are not the same as him and wonder 'why can't they just get married too'
While i don't agree with it i get the point he's trying to make by saying someone who's been divorced once had to pass at least 1 persons vibe check in order to get married in the first place. The problem with this argument however is that there's millions of people out there with terrible judgment and therefore get married to people who they shouldn't. There's both good reasons and bad reasons to be married/divorced just as there's good reasons and bad reasons to be 40+ and single. And Ryan is only focusing on the good reasons to be married/divorced and the bad reasons to be 40+ and single and is overlooking the alternatives to both.

I asked this to my 40 year old coworkers that are women and they all said they really couldn’t care less about if someone has been married and divorced or if they were never married in the first place. @@NewMetaTV I am not saying it is difficult, I am saying that the ones who happen to fall through the cracks shouldnt be assumed worse by default. I swear to god, if Ryan ever took one of his insane takes into normal life, and not just talked to people who can't defend themselves against his rambling (i.e. chat), - his own delusional perception of self-proclaimed "normalcy" would crumble in a fucking nanosecond. Like, he talks about how "normal" he is, because he does small talk with other parents at daycare and shit, but I bet if he talked to them like he talks to his chat, they would look at him like he's out of his mind.
Well yeah, of course. When we communicate our ideas to other people in a dialogue, we always try to find common ground and tend to lessen the extent of our more eccentric beliefs. He can't do that with an amorphous mass of chat usernames, and he would be well advised not to, as unrefined and jagged opinions make for more entertaining and engaging content. But calling an entertainer, in whose best interest it is to exaggerate delusional also seems a bit much, don't you think?
As an asexual guy, there's a clear reason I'm not married at 30. Most people have different desires/goals for a relationship than I do, so I prefer to just keep a close group of friends whom I love. The human experience is so infinitely diverse that these kind of vibes-based generalizations will never be a good metric for judging others. NL does it for content, and it's certainly entertaining, but I worry he views himself more as a philosopher than the comedian he is.
Can't believe it took me this much scrolling to find this comment. I'm not even in the aroace umbrella myself but every time NL makes this dumbass take my first thought is always "what'd he say fuck the aroace community for". Which I mean. Love the guy. It's funny because he's also taken the opposite bit of "Wew, getting married ten years ago felt like catching the last chopper out of 'Nam." I don't take it as seriously as everyone else tbh, and I feel like some forever alone scrub like me has more right than anyone. He might feel that way, he might not, no need to be sour about it, It's a bit that gets a little pushback but that's it. Just tease him about how his wife literally hunted him down for them to date.
And that you can be in a relationship and not want to marry. Me and my partner don't agree with a lot of how marriage gets put on a pedestal and when I heard about how simple and lowkey NL's marriage, we thought that was pretty endearing. But this just comes off as punching down and mean spirited. Also he's joked about being neurodivergent and actually has questioned if he had autistic traits in the past while not understanding that being social as a neurodivergent person can be incredibly difficult and a barrier to meet new people or get into a relationship.
Ditto on another comment here, I usually just "keep him at an arms length" with clips here and there. 90% of his takes seem to be "I am a 35y married man with a daughter, why is nobody else exactly like me?" For a streamer with so many people constantly talking on his chat, it's weird how he doesnt see how different people can be lol
This cements why I find NL generally funny but am adamant that he is the textbook example of "I am very smart" (but actually isn't) kind of guy. He's just the liberal Ben Shapiro in that regard.
This is the only take where it just feels like he's being mean for actually no reason. That one time he asked "what's wrong with you?" about unmarried men comes to mind like wtf at least be civil big guy
Yeah, he's talking about men over 30 without marriage feeling superior to divorced men, while he himself is acting superior to both. Saying "at least the divorced guy..." already puts the divorced guy underneath him, a "normal, married guy over 30 with a kid and a Peloton"

He'd rather drink a beer with a divorced man, just because the other guy doesn't feel *romantic* feelings (which would make him the Ice Truck Killer?). NL is being extremely normie-pilled, though, it's insane. I understand viewing things through your own lense, but this take is extremely myopic and excludes an insane amount of categories of people. Also, NL, family and close friends exist. I do not need a significant other to call me on my shit (or feel emotionally validated) His point was initially only about people on the dating market, where it made some sense. Now he's elevated someone's marriage history with the whole person and their character.
Heya! Me too! Honestly the saddest thing about this clip is that he seems to be attaching so much of his self-worth to being married. Do non-aro people really think like this though? It's kinda crazy to me that someone would put so much emphasis on something arbitrary I can't relate to. It's like someone going "bro if you don't got 50 people you can invite to a house party you're cooked!"
Not aromantic but as a 30 year old single guy, I've never felt jealous. His wife is a 4/10 and doesn't respect him from the way she talks about him and his daughter looks nothing like him.

I think the reason the bit doesn't resonate with chat is because it's punching down not punching up. It's like starting a bit with "homeless people smell why is nobody talking about this?" like we get it, we don't have access to a shower (metaphorically) you don't need to point and laugh. It's not profound or interesting rhetoric, it's just hurtful to a large portion of his audience.

I think your point is valid and I largely agree with the premise, but that specific example is way too drastic and isn't comparable.
And Ryan is only focusing on the good reasons to be married/divorced and the bad reasons to be 40+ and single and is overlooking the alternatives to both.

and i think the redditor comes out quite a lot
He is a redditor because he has a different opinion than you ? Cool
@@DisEkript the peloton gives him all his aura
@@ciprianrobo it's his Samson's hair. Cut it off from him and he's powerless, he'll regress to the same man making nasty dog jokes in 2009
You're never going to roast your own chicken as good as the grocery store does it, and it's just as cheap. Get the rotisserie.
You need to believe in yourself a little bit more if you don't think it's possible to cook a chicken better than in store rotisserie. And that's no slight to the humble rotisserie chicken.
Nah, I know how I like my food. Grocery stores make stuff for general consumption but I make my food peak for myself
@@kurtusky13 but it's extremely valid to wonder whether it's worth a lot of extra effort to make it like 10% better. some people don't have chef fantasies to fulfill
He's like Jerma if instead of entertaining chat, he let it shape him
3:15 "ACCIDENTALLY GOTTEN INTO A COMMON LAW MARRIAGE" HOW HIGH IS HIS BAR??? WHAT KIND OF GUY IS HE THINKING OF???
In Canada if you live with someone for 2 years it counts as common law so it can happen pretty easily accidentally
If NL wants us to be married so bad, he should put his money where his mouth is and find us some wives.
First time I’ve ever actually been mad at his takes lol usually when he’s being snarky it’s at something totally made up or innocuous but this just feels like he’s putting himself on a pedestal, get the feeling he thinks he hit a home run when he was born on 3rd base
There it is, my feelings in words! Well put
@@shamefuldisplay9692 I’m very much single by choice due to my job so it’s not like my feelings are hurt or anything either, he just comes off so arrogant about stuff like this. First time he’s ever seemed completely out of touch to me
Am I crazy in thinking he is not born on 3rd base? What is so special about him?
@@crystyxn he got an internet following and basically had his wife delivered to his doorstep lol. I’m not complaining about havin to work for it when I want to but he had it about as easy as a guy can have it
@@Flamerunner451 maybe he just doesn't realize how lucky he got and thinks everyone else must not be trying 😂 idk
I've never felt more power as an aromantic than I do now. I simply deny the premise and NL can't get me for it or he must accept he's something-phobic.
I do not need a significant other to call me on my shit (or feel emotionally validated)
His point was initially only about people on the dating market, where it made some sense.
Like bro, what is there to be jealous of?
But yeah it's just banter and he's kinda normie. It's all just for laughs.
@@crystyxn Hm, I'd caution fighting rudeness with rudeness (especially when you're firing strays at people outside the convo).
@@XDestroyoxZx I think the key is that any kind of generalising is silly. As is drawing massive conclusions on the basis of one metric.
Also, it's a safe assumption NL is inflating his words because he knows whom he's talking to and he felt like riling up his chat. I can hardly imagine it's a 100% genuine take.
@@louieberg2942 am I wrong?
(priming himself to get divorced)
"The more emotional intelligent you become, the less you take things personally. You start to see that other people's behaviors are often reflections of their own struggles, not a statement about your worth."
He would have to be extremely awful to lose someone who was that in love with him to the point she sought him out that hard.
Dayum NL is so judgemental these days
What I've gathered from this is interest in sports seems to inversely correlate with marriage status. Unmarried - uninterested, married - interested, divorced - devoted
Its always been strange to me that interest in watching sports is seen as such an essential male activity, rather than actually playing sports. Like maybe idgaf about sitting on my couch watching a bunch of millionaires throw a ball around because I use that time to actually go out and have fun moving my own body?
@@Uhshawdude haha yeah man sportsball haha fuck sportsball watchers ***me in my basement bedroom reading ancient tomes and learning to levitate instead of watching the San Freancisco 49ies***
to me this is a classic northernlion bad take. it's not cancelable because it's easily compartmentalized as just some dude's opinion instead of like a social evil
