This must be the most inexplicably underrated - not to mention criminally unknown! - Thin Lizzy song of all time. “The Boys are Back in Town?” Please, this is the REAL SHIT! Keeeerist, that first John Sykes pinch harmonic - at 0:25 seconds - could stop a bull elephant at 500 yards; hair-raising stuff for the ages!
yeah, this is clearly their best track by far. I dont know how songs like 'Jailbreak' and 'The boys are back in town' became so famous when compared to Cold Sweat, which is mainly acknowleged by metal musicians.
John Sykes is a very skilled and experienced guitarrist... Respect for him. And of course... Scott Gorham... those guys are awesome! I am highly influenced by those 2.
Saw John n Scott in 83 on the 'Thunder n Lightening' tour at Gloster Leisure centre. Still one of my all x fave gigs n I even got to touch big Phil's leg! Dunno why I did it but it felt right at the x. What a gig!
Michael Lee died on 24 November 2008 from an epileptic seizure aged 39. He was found dead in his flat and his funeral took place in his hometown of Darlington the following week.(wikipedia):(
agree sykes is an amazing vocalist and guitarist he just fucking sucks at making thin lizzy heavy metal when they are classic rock or rock n roll. if ya gonna be in thin lizzy sound like thin lizzy.
where was this recorded at.I seen them in 01 and 02 didn't get to see them in 03 when they opened for Purple.didn't know they played any where near Texas in 04.kool footage though.I have a whole boot video show from the One Night Only tour in 01.Sykes rocks
I saw them Casey's Golden Pheasant in Billings MT in the early 2000s. I was standing 4 feet from the stage. It is one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. The line up was Sykes, Aldridge, Gorham, and Mendoza. They were all incredible. Check out the live album One Night Only. It came out in 2000 and has that lineup on it along with Wharton on keyboards.
Plz if anyone knows there is a live dvd from any of the Lizzy concerts with Sykes - Please get back to me - totally missed out on this but it´s great!!!
Well Gary is on his blues stuff so I wouldn't bet on him. Robbo-Downey-Gorham-then they should steal Wayne Ellis from Limehouse Lizzy for bass/vocals. Should be some thunder with this tribute guy.
..somebody wanna tell me whats the deal with futzing around with his controls all the time?..pickups on/off...tone/volume knobs...is it a nervous thing???..for real tho..
@tutakar there is actually a new 6 piece line up.........Ricky Warwick (the almighty) vocals+guitar.....vivian campbell-guitar....brian downey-drums....darren wharton -keys.....marco mendoza-bass.....scott gorham-guitar.
Anybody ever notice John's always moving his right hand south, checking to make sure his volume control is all the way up? I know because I do it too. :P
It seems neurotic to me. If you checked it once it should be ok. He takes every free moment to slide his hand past the controls. So, it's not a check, it's neurotic behaviour. For the record: I love John Sykes. ;)
To me it IS a little neurotic when I see myself do it on a recording, lol. But it's far less worse than plowing into a lead when and you majorly screw up because the pickup you were using wasn't at maximum gain. It sucks to have to do, but that's the basic thinking behind it.
Could you have done it any better? =) Don't think so ;) The solos doesn't have to be spot on and perfect every time, this is still an awesome performance =)
@lostboysonbikes Even if Scott is the only member in the band from the classic lineup, Thin Lizzy was a milestone in his life, and it was HIS band TOO. You can't tell someone what to do with the remains of his past. I think i would do the same.
I have to agree with Axeman2006. He does make a mistake on the solo when he's hammering on and tries to comes back on track after that. Good to know that even some of the best guitar players make mistakes :)
I thought they were using Bryan Downey on drums at that time but at the show Is a surprisingly have the drummer from the Jimmy Page Robert Plant band... And I think this is the one that's no longer with us cause he took his own life.... but he was good.
Sounds good but is not right. Gorham was the last guy to use the name and Sykes should not have done that with him. Love em both but it still was not right

Yes!@!
This the best comment on Sykes playing I’ve ever seen 😂
yeah, this is clearly their best track by far. I dont know how songs like 'Jailbreak' and 'The boys are back in town' became so famous when compared to Cold Sweat, which is mainly acknowleged by metal musicians.
It's all childs-play for Sykes.... He is a different breed
Thank you John for keeping this classic song alive, you even sound like Phil.
I'd pay to see this lineup of Thin Lizzy
Sykes and Gotham, are just GODDAMN incredible onstage together. Phil would be happy with the killer version they just belted out…
John Sykes is a very skilled and experienced guitarrist... Respect for him. And of course... Scott Gorham... those guys are awesome! I am highly influenced by those 2.
John Sykes rocks!
No wonder Coverdale didn't want him stealing his thunder 😂

@tutakar

John Sykes is a genius guitarist!!!!
John is monster player !
Rest in Peace Michael Lee :( A real loss. What could have been? Anyway. RIP.
agree sykes is an amazing vocalist and guitarist he just fucking sucks at making thin lizzy heavy metal when they are classic rock or rock n roll. if ya gonna be in thin lizzy sound like thin lizzy.
You gotta admit, this song has an awesome main riff.
...still..the man futzes with his guitar too much...why??...its like a nervous habit..no disrespect, but...some insight, please...
where was this recorded at.I seen them in 01 and 02 didn't get to see them in 03 when they opened for Purple.didn't know they played any where near Texas in 04.kool footage though.I have a whole boot video show from the One Night Only tour in 01.Sykes rocks
This version kicks ass..
@zw331 ........sad news, pretty shocked to hear that he has passed away ........RIP Gary Moore
Super!!
I met Lizzy once. Had a chat. Perfect gentelmen all of them. Some of the really good guys in the world. Not like them bastard politicians and bankers.
Just heard drummer Michael Lee died 24th
November aged 39...R.I.P.
Just look how easily he hits the strings !
True master in an instrument
Still Sounds Great 25 years Later!

My first ever gig thin Lizzy 2003 In Dublin got to meet Sykes and Gorham afterwards two fucking gentlemen
The real Thin Lizzy retired in 1983 at the RDS, glad your a fan ☘️
Awesome!!!! Meet the Band in Stockholm @ our hotel and caught there gig in Vegas!!! Great Guys-Great Music-Phil would be proud.
Where the fuck at in my state of Texas was this at?????!!! I want details.
This band just Rocks. The Quality is to good for a hand -held Camera.
This is a pro-recording. This is how I like my videos.

Such a great tribute to Phill ! What an awesome job. Thank you.
Thanks for this vid. I missed seeing this lineup twice. So at least there's this. Thanks again.
@vanhalen515084 Sykes quit the band last year........Michael Lee the drummer died a couple of years ago.
Love this song and it always reminds me of wonderful times in Las Vegas.
Fuck ya! I love it when this song gets stuck in my head. I think I'm gonna learn it
Where is this at in Texas?
WOW!!!!!!SYKES++++++++/PHIL++++++++....................
on bass?
Not the best version of this song or Johns best version of the solo .... Shame cause hes usually awesome .....
Seks-Coks, Sykes!-Пртягатеьни.Глаз неотвесті.Что Он прінімет,всегда хотела ето узнать!-Lohn,wot,прінімаешь?.
I would rather see Sykes, Gorham, Downey and Darren as TL than Gorham, Darren w. Scott Travis of Judas Priest and other musiscians like today.
RAAAW FUCKING POWER!
Brilliant!
Dizzy Lizzy played this song at my husband's 60th birthday party at the King Arthur in Glastonbury and the evening was brilliant!
G8 performance guitar should have been louder!
Well Gary is on his blues stuff so I wouldn't bet on him. Robbo-Downey-Gorham-then they should steal Wayne Ellis from Limehouse Lizzy for bass/vocals. Should be some thunder with this tribute guy.
this is the shit, roll it up smoke it, sykes rocks
..somebody wanna tell me whats the deal with futzing around with his controls all the time?..pickups on/off...tone/volume knobs...is it a nervous thing???..for real tho..
Great sound quality, Thanks!
@tutakar there is actually a new 6 piece line up.........Ricky Warwick (the almighty) vocals+guitar.....vivian campbell-guitar....brian downey-drums....darren wharton -keys.....marco mendoza-bass.....scott gorham-guitar.
@brox68 too bad that wont happen RIP Gary
He has his money in a suitcase...wouldn't it be safer in a bank? :P Love this song.
Probably would have to pay tax if he deposited it in a bank.
Nobody asks Robbo for his opinion...
this is what i like to see.

Haha I always notice Sykes doing it as well, I'm exactly the same 😂
Is that why? Always wondered about that, thought it was just a nervous thing he did.
Frankly I find it cute. But what's cuter is the that he skips across the stage and falls right into my heart. Love John ❤️🌹
he writes the solo and gets it wrong who teh fuck messes up tehyre own solo's?????
OMG FUCKING EPIC!!!!!!
Thats mr Sykes for you awesome guitar player
John Sykes is fucking GOD!!!
This is all well and good.. BUT you just can not and should NOT call it Thin Lizzy
Ynkeligt bras! Herligt nummer, men uden Lynott - glem det!!
O/ 26 JOHN ,GUITAR LICK- 1/40 SOLO😃
WAY TO FAST ! ANY WAY GREAT SONG .
Could you have done it any better? =) Don't think so ;) The solos doesn't have to be spot on and perfect every time, this is still an awesome performance =)

watching this makes you realise how fucking good Brian Downey is !
The audio is really bad sound muffley
REALLY want a les paul custom now.
Banda, espetacular.👏👏👏👏
I thought they were using Bryan Downey on drums at that time but at the show Is a surprisingly have the drummer from the Jimmy Page Robert Plant band... And I think this is the one that's no longer with us cause he took his own life.... but he was good.
VERY , VERY GOOD !!!
John should work with Wayne Ellis
❤❤
hellfire!!! this is superb video!!! wowowowow - great sound and visuals!
Sounds good but is not right. Gorham was the last guy to use the name and Sykes should not have done that with him. Love em both but it still was not right
lukemanify It got Gorham back out there being active and it led to the formation of Black Star Riders, so all in all it wasn't a bad thing.
❤❤
When Bud Light was....😁
JORN LANDE DOES A KILLER VERSION OF THIS
Scott's got some nice chops there.
I prefer mariachi 😳😳😳
bass line too low
Audience recording so it just doesn't pick it up. There's no bass anything!
Fuck yeah!
Rip Phil 🇮🇹
very well thin Lizzy
Michael Lee on the kit
