The mist messed up part of this story is how their town literally kicked the family out and gave up on them and the investigation into who shot John. That police department should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Disgusting.
That niece stood up like a G. She put her life on the line for those kids. A real stand up young lady. She never thought of hiding. She wanted whomever that was at that door to think she was the ONLY one there. GANGSTA!!!
She was no "GANGSTA", that would be an insult. 🙄 And she was also a kid herself. She was just a badass. A brave badass young lady. She was watching over younger ones. Acting like a momma bear, but only few years older than them. 😎Badass.
It would make a terrible movie because the dad just rolls over and lets a criminal dominate his whole life. No revenge. No retribution. It would be frustrating and unwatchable.
I wish they would have just used his voice. Subtitles if needed. I could understand him perfectly. What a warrior and family of warriors. Rest easy John, you're a legend and a hero.
Honestly if I was a cop in that town and John got revenge I'd turn my head and say "nope I don't have any idea as to who would do such a thing to Melvin"
teresa rangel well to be fair that’s what they did to this man. They turned their head and said “nope don’t have any idea who would do such a thing to John” Eye for an eye 👎 you’re no better than Melvin when you do the exact same thing Put him in maximum security prison for life.
John is far more of a forgiving man than I could ever be.. if I knew someone like Reine had put my family through all of that, I don’t think I could have stopped myself from giving him what he deserved..
It’s truly amazing to witness. Revenge and hatred is heavy to carry around. Happy he and his wife walked away and chose freedom. God always has the last say…in this life or the next. Beautiful family.
I wished that he could have shot Melvin but I'm so glad he didn't. Revenge is never the answer and killing that horrible man wouldn't be worth spending the rest of his life in prison. It would have caused his family even more intense pain.
The thing is, had he done that, no doubt someone would have come after his family in TN. They had found a form of peace there. He made the right decision.
This was published in 2013 and I’m in 2020 right now but this really breaks my heart the town failed that man and his whole family it’s so disappointing .
Policajt23 Illegal is what is against the law. Men make law as a collective, man may break the law in person when upholding the law is unbearable to him.
I am filled with admiration for this family. It’s horrifying how the father ended up being punished by his community for being brave. I applaud his fearlessness; never compromising and refusing to capitulate to the bullying from the psychopath Reine. His beautiful wife remained loyal to her husband and their children throughout it all! Such a superb family .
This is one of the most amazing stories I've ever heard. This family unit stuck together through it all. The police force and the city did this man and his family wrong but they still moved on with their lives and ketbthe bitterness and resentment go. Give this family all the medals and the medical team that helped John. Wow. Just wow.
Yes, and it just goes to show you to be kind to people. No matter if they appear to have it all together, you never know what people are going through. Or maybe what people have been through.
I don't understand why it matter how many years after such a horrendous crime is committed, the person is still guilty and still should stand trial and face punishment. Statute of limitations my ASS. that family still suffered at the hands of that man. That young niece was baby sitting those three kids, was incredibly brave to hide them and risk herself instead. amazing woman, and an amazing family.
We have laws, you know? You can't just point and say, hey that is a bad guy, he needs to be in jail. No matter how true, you need to follow due process. Otherwise INNOCENT people will end up in jail too. If he had been killed, there would be no statute. The truth is, they had a better family life then most people. Certainly better then mine. My parents were bastards. If someone shot them, i probably would have celebrated. So don't make this more then it is.
Marina Doshkevich I dont care how much time passes after a crime, the person should still be accountable for that crime. this "law" lets them get away with it if enough time passes and that's just not right.
Disgusting treatment of a man who trained and lived to protect the town. John, if you're still with us, we can understand you perfectly. You brought up your family to be as strong as yourself, as are your brother and niece. You sir are someone everyone dreams to look up to. I'm angry that you didn't get the justice you deserved and hope your later life is peaceful and happy.
This hurts me to watch this. A good man and family.. My husband was a cop for 33 years and put in hospital 3 times..I just lost him.. He too was a good man.
My jaw dropped the moment this hero was put on screen. I would have never believed the unspeakable happened to him. Praise above that he lives to warn others and tell his story and to be there to continue to protect his family
And his wife, hands down that woman stuck with him during all this. There is no weight of gold that can amount the wealth of a good woman. No man can not pay for a good woman, no man is that rich.
Incredible woman. Like my mom, who raised and cared for her baby boy, who was severely disabled from birth 1984 thru death 2007. She took _immaculate_ care of him, and went through SO MUCH. My dad wanted to put my brother in a home, he never would've lived and had the love he got if that happened he wasn't supposed to live to be 1 year old and he made it to 22. There should be awards for people like his wife, and my mom.
Can we appreciate the wife for a moment: she stuck with her husband and family through him almost dying, distancing himself during his recovery and constant anxiety if they will live through to the next day. That’s what a great mother and wife should be
Bloxburg tips :3 i mean people are different and some decide to abandon their families when the situation gets sticky or uncomfortable or hurtful for them
I watch a lot of crime stories, but this one....I'm actually crying over this story. I was is shock when they put John on the screen and I realize he survived. When he came back home and said 'I'm done', I was so happy for him for getting to that place after planning and planning a revenge. Finally he let go of the anger and returned to his life... this family is amazing. And I was so anxious as they kept interviewing his wife alone, I kept wondering the entire time if they had split up at some point, and that last moment where they're together on the beach, that was the happiest part for me. They truly all healed as a family and managed to stay together and live a good life despite what had happened.
God this show is good. I don't think Iv'e ever felt more relieved than the moment John Busby appeared on camera alive and well. My heart ached for his wife. The way she described him. She loves him so much. Ok, well time to binge watch more of this show and chew my nails off!
Accio Cake I so agree! I can't decide which series is better -- this one, forensic files or disappeared. I'm on a long vacation so I'm going to binge on all of them! Cheers!
Ugh me too, I literally welled up. I am so so so gad he lived. I am so sad he had to go through the torment and agony of being betrayed by his city/PD, and fear for his family and himself, but what a will to survive and an amazing man. This was one of the craziest mystery episodes ever!
I read the daughters book. I love this family. My husband was a police officer for 33 years. I lost him last year. I am so happy the family made it together.
What a badass!!! And his wife what an amazing women! Can u imagine the amount of stress and sadness she endured as well as her husband and kids. I’m so happy they are still together.
It’s incredible how selfless, unique and courageous each one of these people are and together they are just an awe-inspiring family. The definition of which a family should be. They were failed by so many that should have had their backs but instead of holding on to bitterness due to that fact they continued through life always having each other’s backs. Just the simple fact that John couldn’t even allow himself to go under until he heard his family was safe despite the tremendous amount of pain I’m sure he was enduring speaks volumes.
side note: Melvin’s first wife went missing, and his second wife was shot dead in her home (while he was in prison.) this guy needs every inch and aspect of his life examined.
With that beard he reminded me of a Paul Bunyan type guy. And with how he looked after his family, and how the police, at least gave them that 24hr guarded protection, even for his kids in school, I would say this is one guy who has his heart in the right place.
Reminds me of my dad, my dad was killed 2 months before my birth, he told my mother to name me Shyanna, he died saving a little girl from a monster who had already raped her, and then tried killing her, my dad jumped in the way and was shot straight in the heart, thankfully other officers were around to rescue the little girl and capture the man. I wish I had gotten to know him.

@Jo Pearson Um, at that point in the story, they had not even revealed that he had not died in the end. However, I agree that it was very obvious he was not a corpse since he was at the hospital having surgery, which they said. But the Vardy may have been thrown off by them all talking about him in the past tense during that part of the story. I suspect the writers did that to throw us all off and make us think he didn't survive until they were ready to reveal that he was still, in fact, alive.
They did such a good job repairing his face, I could understand him completely and he looks great. Seeing him talking made my day after watching the first part of the story.
This police dept.was so scandalous. That could not happen in Louisville,Ky where I live. Our police run towards danger and this lowlife would have been behind bars. It's hard to grasp uncaring, cowardly policemen. It's a blessing this place is the exception and not the norm. God blessed this family with an abundance of courage and love.
The fact that they had to give up Tigger for Max and that Max was aggressive towards the some members of the family meant that “training center” didn’t properly train Max before handing him over to that family. This whole story is just heartbreaking.
I know! That's just another heartbreak for the family. They lost so much. And imagine how their dog missed their family and didn't understand why they gave him away. 😢
Thats what I thought too. Very reckless of them to hand over a badly trained dog that could have harmed the children, and very sad they had to give the Beagle away. A good trainer could have trained it to be protective and a loving member of the family and become friends with the other dog.
I saw a longer show about this several years ago, which went more into the back story of who shot him. Apparently, Melvin was a local goon who had a lifelong reputation as a violent psychopath. His whole family are the kind of people you don't want living anywhere near you. So glad the family were survivors, who were able to beat the odds and get on with their lives. True Evil does exist out there and sometimes is passed down genetically.
My thoughts exactly. This house is full of scared kids. Let me make sure not to drive over in a Police car, let me make sure not to give them a courtesy phone call , so they'll know to expect me, let me make sure not to wear a Police uniform, .....'

It would make a terrible movie because the dad just rolls over and lets a criminal dominate his whole life. No revenge. No retribution. It would be frustrating and unwatchable.

Heneeded to be there for his family
I wouldn't have stopped myself.
The thing is, had he done that, no doubt someone would have come after his family in TN. They had found a form of peace there. He made the right decision.

I don't understand why it matter how many years after such a horrendous crime is committed, the person is still guilty and still should stand trial and face punishment. Statute of limitations my ASS. that family still suffered at the hands of that man. That young niece was baby sitting those three kids, was incredibly brave to hide them and risk herself instead. amazing woman, and an amazing family.
honestly, I don't understand why they don't sue the hell out of that town.

The truth is that it is hard to find a good man or a good woman.
Both are elusive.
