Did they do anything to see if he was mentally unstable? I think he must have something wrong in his brain. This is sickening to see someone go thru what she did and he just sat there. He should get somekind of tests etc while he serves his time in prison with no chance of parole. Im so happy she made it thru all this. She is a fighter.
@@randallsmerna384 Yeah, he may have done it before. In fact, he had a long history of aggression to women. There is no guarantee he has not killed someone in the past.
@@robjj5373 This is such a dumb comment. Obviously men shouldn't attack women, but will EVERY man not attack a woman? You always have to be careful for the outliers.
Ki...this is why you should have their info and write everything down for future reference. Talk to people about everything you are doing if living alone.
The fact that he didn't have an obvious "motive" makes this heinous assault even more terrifying. No greed, lust, jealousy, revenge. Just pure evil and a hatred of women. This is the worst kind of sociopath! Marty, you are truly an inspiration. Best wishes to everyone.❤🙏
The doctors did an absolutely amazing job. Makes you respect them a lot. It's literally equivalent to putting life in an otherwise lifeless body. Also, Marti is such a strong woman, I am so freaking proud of her. She chose to survive and that should be an inspiration for many.
Those are some amazing coworkers right there. What they did for her and going out of their way to see if she was okay and to recognize something felt off and to do something about it, proud of them.
This is the kind of boss everyone hopes for. Mine fired me after I lost my aunt, grandma, cousin and father. Infact, it was 2 weeks after we laid our father to rest. I have lost hope for humanity.
That man is a demon on earth. I'm so glad Marti survived this. It's amazing those coworkers actually went to check on her. So much to be thankful for in this story.
I still don't understand motive for this guy? Craziness. Doesn't make any sense. Just appears to have anger inside him. Demons most certainly. Has all the traits of a serial killer. He might have other secrets... Who's to know?
The first thing we all noticed, I’m sure-this woman was beloved by her coworkers, and this fact saved her life. Be kind to the people you work with-you never know who you need to count on in this life. She must be eternally grateful to that caring group of coworkers.
Her daughter seem like a brat tbh, she admit it herself & felt guilty about it . Talking about how she was in the hospital on her 16th birthday when the conditions of her mothers health were critical and more important at the time.
The surgeon at the hospital was a Godsend for helping to save Marti's life. Bless all the staff at that wonderful hospital for saving her life and bless her co-workers for alerting the police, and the officer that was first on the scene. And bless her amazing family. This is one true crime case that is an inspiring story of good winning over evil.
my job is the same way. i had started this new medication to quit smoking and it completely knocked me out and i slept through my alarm and everything. i start at 8am and it had been 10am and i hadn’t called into work and they damn near called the police!
Seriously...amazing group of people, any worker would be lucky to have such an attentive lot. If they had waited until after work, it might have been too late.
A big thank you for the paramedics, surgeons, nurses, assistants and all all the hospital workers for saving her Marti's life. I see that there were not thanked and their heroic work was not mentioned enough in this story. They miraculously saved her life. That surgeon was truly amazing.
I’m sure the shock of seeing someone in that horrible of shape had to be traumatic for them. Even though they have seen it multiple times I’m sure they never get used to it 😢
Absolutely and the police officer that found her as well! Sometimes we forget all that they go through to keep us safe and something like this could really effect a person psychologically. I know they aren’t all hero’s but many of them ARE! We can’t let the bad ones stop us from appreciating the countless good ones out there!
@Nirbana A huge thank you as well to all the brain injury rehabilitation and physical therapy doctors, nurses and assistants. Their work helping Marti recover and rehabilitate her brain and body are remarkable. And huge kudos to Marti too! She is a strong, courageous woman and survivor. 💕
The editor of this video did amazing work! Waiting to bring in Marti’s interview halfway through, after learning about the extent of her trauma, made seeing her alive and well even more impactful. 👏
The son too. The sensitivity he showed over the crime scene and insisting on cleaning up his mother's blood and keep the scene from gawkers really touched me.
especially when she showed the three long scars on her neck, all i could think was wow how did the doctor fix that and save her, considering all her injuries and the shape she was in
28.5 years isn’t enough time. God Bless Marti, her family, her legal team, and her amazing work friends who actually saved her life by being engaged and actively concerned.
So because she didn’t die, he should benefit? As far as some murderers getting less time , I’d argue the problem is not that attempted murderers should get less time, but murderers should get more time. They should throw away the key on this evil pos.
I agree. And when he gets out at age 55 (or earlier for good behavior) he'll still have plenty of time left to attack other women . And he thought she was dead.
She sure had lot of people who cared about her. What a sweet daughter and entire family. Glad they caught the guy, but 281/2 years does not seem like enough.
Ridiculous for you kiddies who have no skin in the game for wanting this to have gone to trial so the guy could’ve done 10 more years. Can you imagine the extra stress and trauma that would have subjected Marti to who is already suffering from PTSD and severe neurological and physiological damage? That was a family decision agreed upon between her family and the prosecutor to offer the guy a plea bargain so it DIDN’T go to trial. Because they knew all the damage that it would’ve done to her to have to withstand that kind of ordeal which would only have dragged this out for years, potentially, and delayed the poor woman’s healing psychologically and otherwise by subjecting her and her children and other family members to possibly weeks of grueling courtroom testimony, reliving the trauma, seeing crime scene photos over and over again, etc. it’s easy for you people to say it would’ve been good if she had to go through all that torture to give the guy more jail time because she’s not YOUR family member, after all. Damn.
That’s sad. Glad you have your own supportive family now. I didn’t come from a very caring upbringing either. . I know what that’s like. Apparently the guy who committed this violent crime also didn’t have anybody in his corner. Nobody showed up in court for him. Probably says a lot about the neglected and probably abusive upbringing that he had which caused him to commit such a crime
This is the strongest person I’ve ever heard of so happy she didn’t let that coward win. Also bless her coworkers for caring that’s rare in today’s world.
She was able to be strong because she had such a supportive family. There was obviously something wrong with this guy and his own upbringing because none of his family was even there in the courtroom with him. Two entirely different families, two entirely different outcomes. Family is everything. One way or the other
I live alone, widowed pretty young. I’ve had many problems with workmen over the years. They seem to think that you need a man, welcome sex, want attention - then can get very aggressive when you don’t. They also try to over charge, scam you - and get threatening very quickly. With no man around, they think you’re stupid. And vulnerable. It happens a lot.
This may sound anti-feminist, but I might suggest getting a LARGE pair of used men's workboots to place by your front door. I have many friends who are younger widows (because I am one myself) and the ones that do this feel less stressed and encounter less problems when a maintenance worker enters the house, as they think you are not there alone. It's not a fix-all, but every little bit helps.
@@AndrewMacLaine Good idea w the workboots. I live alone in a small bldg (12 apts) with a very great manager. I make a pt. of knowing my neighbors and being a decent person myself. For work to be done I have regular people with one in charge that I consult and use him when he wants the dough. Let people know when anybody is coming over that you do not know. I much prefer cities to suburbs since I was a kid in a horror 'burb family, there is too much isolation. Well most important is I moved out of the US 20 yrs ago to work in Germany and Mexico. USA is terribly dangerous comparatively with all the guns, drug use, lack of community. Yes Mexico is much much safer, ridiculous the propoganda that keeps people in the US.
@@AndrewMacLaine Not anti-fem at all; it's realistic. My mom, my two aunts, and at least two of my bosses have all said to do this, or that they do this.
I don't understand why people who do this get such short sentences. The fact that she did not die is sheer luck. For all intents and purposes he murdered her. In his mind and heard he committed MURDER. So why does he get a lighter sentence just because she survived???? That is INSANE.
Zillleee, I completely agree--he did, indeed, intend to murder. He should have received life, 50 years to life, or death. And, yes, 28 years is brief, considering.
Zillleee I think an important factor in sentencing should be: can this person be rehabilitated? will they ever be safe to release back into society? EDIT: to be clear, if someone has committed a lengthy string of rapes or sexual abuse of children or egregious murders, etc, I think the court and expert advisors should be able to protect society from this person in a meaningful way. To me, incarceration should either be a chance to rehabilitate the person and give them the tools they need to changgye thier lives and thrive, OR A way to sequester demonstrably very dangerous individuals so they can't go on hurting people.
When will society take a stand and demand prisons are places that make a positive difference in the lives of inmates which in turn is better for society. Let's think about how we can be safer living with exconvicts because there sure are plenty of them.
He’s the scariest kind there is. He randomly decided to go back to her house, ring the doorbell, and absolutely pound on this poor woman. All that rage- for what? She said something you didn’t like? Looked at you a certain way that you misinterpreted? Didn’t pay you fast enough? What possible reason could he have given for this rage? He needs to remain in prison. He is a danger to society and everyone in it.
In our wonderful society they put a dog down if he bites someone ...but this guy they are going to release at some point in time?? Our backwards ,makes no sense society
She's a strong independent woman. He hates women like that. He thought he found a woman no one would notice was missing and he waited so long after working with her to do that because he thought no one would link him with her.
This was the best 48 hours I’ve seen. I think Brian Pennington should have received at least 50 years instead of 28 and 1/2 years. Very scary to know that there are people like him in this world.
It was nice to hear the daughter say she wanted to be more like her mom after this experience. She fast-forwarded any teenage rebellion and her and her mom can go straight to the great years that lie ahead.
Grew up the youngest of 7. My teenage years were pretty rough. Lots of yelling, especially on my part. I started growing out of it when I was nearing 16. The next fall I met a classmate who'd become my best friend. She lost her mom at 13, vehicle accident she & her mom were in. She met my mom & adored her. Through her, I saw how much it hurt to loose her mom. My relationship with mom completely changed after that. No more arguing/talking back. No more staying out til all hours of the late, late night. I made sure to appreciate her & all she had done for Daddy, my siblings, so many others & I. We still have it 4 decades later!! Yes, she's still with us at 95!
@@gaillynn1280 Thank you for sharing this beautiful story. Sometimes, it takes another's perspective to get us to see clearly. Good for you, for her and hurrah that she is still with you at 95! (Lost my mom of 91 this past year-I have very few regrets on our relationship as we had a wonderfully close one.filled with years of laughter and joy.....blessings to your family!)
Such a strong, courageous person she is. Listen to your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, listen to that little voice that’s telling you something is wrong.
This is so accurate. I look back now at something that happened to me about 9 years ago and thank God I listened to my inner voice. I was getting my dog into my car after spending time at the dog park in my neighborhood. I was the last one to leave. It was twilight, so not dark yet. This guy pulls up really fast behind me and jumps out and says, "Hey, don't go, can your dog play with my dog? “ I was tired and hesitant but, wanting to be nice I finally agreed. The park is pretty much in the open so I thought I was OK. My dog seemed very skittish around him and she's usually very friendly. She also wouldn't play with his dog. He immediately starts with the questions, "So, how long have you lived in this neighborhood? Do I have a fenced yard? Is my dog an outdoor or indoor dog? What do I do for work?“ I got the worst feeling in the pit of my stomach. I quickly said, " Hey my dog is really tired, she played a lot earlier and I'm supposed to meet my husband in a few minutes, I have to go." He got between me and the gate saying, "No, no, no, c'mon, you can stay a little longer." I think the look on my face and the way I told my dog, " let's go" (she's a pit/boxer mix) as we just moved forward with purpose, made him step away slightly. I pushed through and we got out of there. He was yelling, "C' mon! Don't go!" I found out later he didn't live in our neighborhood and had a police report filed on him from another woman because he followed her home! The police had reports of the same man approaching women and saying inappropriate things. He was well known to the police for other things they wouldn't disclose. I should have left from the beginning. Glad my gut finally forced me. The real kicker is, the dog he had with him was stolen.
That instinct saved my life and I was only 12 years old. I fought off a would be rapist who held a butcher knife to my throat. I fought him at just the right moment. He ran away like a little girl. I wish he had been caught because you know he was going to continue to do it again and again. Trust your instinct and act !!!!!! Don’t talk or give in to being polite. Criminals use that to their advantage. They say things like “ so we’re “we studying” saying we… no he’s not your friend. Or Let me carry those ….. No, I didn’t ask for help. I don’t know you. Don’t touch my stuff. They interfere with your personal space.
If you're with an abusive mam whether its physically and or emotionally it can really take a lot of courage to speak out so I have some respect for Jennifer doing the right thing even if it were not immediately. Unless you've lived through coercion in a relationship you have no idea how tough it is to speak out. What a courageous woman Marti is. What a wonderful family she has surrounding her.
I agree. If the detectives and DA had showed more compassion for her in the beginning, I bet she would have been supportive from the start. She was probably terrified being questioned while he was in the next room. They should have offered her and her kids safety first.
The psych term for women who stay & dont speak out is Stockholm Syndrome. They have feelings for the abuser, as a coping strategy . That, together with the emotional abuse, coercive control & gaslighting leaves them too mentally ground down to leave .
@@gentleeyes I believe she would have been pounded into the ground had she told the truth. Now he’ll be locked away so she can start over… hopefully with a “better chooser.” ✌🏽

The officer that went into the house is the real hero because he could have knocked, walked around the house and simply left. He could articulate going in the house because of the purse and her not being at work so he did. He went above and beyond and found her.

I swear this is like the only case ive heard where everyone did right. The coworker, the cops....except the judiciary system. The fact that this man brutally attacked and almost killed a woman and was sentenced so lightly.
Well compared to actual murderer's of especially babies and young kids, who are sentenced to life with parole after 20 years, his sentence is typical for some states. Sad, the judicial system has no regards to damage done, not only physical.
He needs to be forever monitored if he ever got out and got a chance to live a normal life i think people like him need to be tracked and traced at all times.

This story is amazing. I'm so happy she survived this. Her family and coworkers are amazing people. This was a heinous crime. I hope he never gets out.
He's about 27 here and his sentence is 28-1/2 years, so hoping he doesn't get time off for good behavior, he will be age 55. Sickening thought. With the solid evidence he allowed them to have and his obviously warped demeanor, I probably would have taken it to trial, no matter how exhausted I was, for the hope of ten extra years (38 instead of 28-1/2) of peace of mind.
If he got 28 years in jail, he’s probably going to get out in much less than that on parole. He certainly won’t be rehabilitated, and he’ll probably be even worse. No one will be safe when that man is out.
In my state, the perpetrator must serve 85% of the sentence for violent crimes, so if that is the case in this state, at least he will have to serve most of the time he was given before even being eligible for parole, which would be 24 years and some change.

But I'm shocked at the 28.5 year sentence. That in itself is a crime. He deserves life. I hope and pray he's never released alive from prison.

@@stockwellsantley6606 No, the speed the brain works at is beyond phenomenal. Synapses firing all over your brain making judgements and decisions for you at a pace you can’t even think about. Exactly right. The reason he said nothing when they asked him why is because there is no answer. He had NO REASON to do what he did, and he knows that.
I thought that too -- at first. Then I see probably came to rape her or her young daughter or just break in but once he got there it wasn't like he planned and he became enraged and killed instead (at least he *thought* he had killed her). Robbers often knock at the door if no one answers they break in. Just like the grandma's house.

Yes, we can't have anyone for any reason who has committed such an act to be walking our streets. We live in an age of lawlessness where criminals are released and citizens live in fear. But there is One coming Who will execute perfect justice soon.
Exactly!! People have inflicted incomprehensible torture and horror upon people that lived. We should always Strive to be more compassionate and empathetic but our societies need to stop having so much sympathy for the Devil. The brutality of this crime is horrific enough, but then adding that there was no motive is just down right terrifying. This monster proves that you cant trust anybody now a days.
His motive is as old as time. There is nothing that darkness hates more than light. He is darkness and Marti is light. Too much light in the world makes darkness impossible.....he wanted to shut off the light.
In my opinion, it had something to do with power. Everything pointed to Marti being a powerful force with just her size to say otherwise. My thinking is that he felt inferior to her in every way, her personality dominated his, and he and his ego couldn't handle a woman who made him feel so small and weak. His past violence against women only supports this. He didn't put up any resistance when the male detectives came to his home and took all that damning evidence. I'm sure he was seething when Marti's daughter was speaking at the sentencing. Just my opinion, admittedly not based on a whole lot, but it's what I see.
This story and the way it is being told is very inspiring. Helps rearrenge things, bring peices together and live further, having the difficulties behind. My father had gone a while before my mothet did, so when she was leaving, it happened very close. Till now sometimes I discover things that I was not just able to let go. I think the description that her co - worker used to describe Marti was absolutely beautiful I’m kit going to repeat it because it won’t do it justice but go to 1:00 and you will know what I’m talking about. It says it all about just how highly thought of she is
As a single woman, I have learned to always trust my 'gut' or my instinct. Especially around a stranger. I feel terrible she had to go thru something so traumatic . There are so many walking wounded people.
Let's make sure we aren't victim blaming here. There was no reason, from all info we have, that she had a reason to be worried. I hire people to fix things too. I am way more paranoid since seeing this originally 10 years ago though. Plus Marti's mom had known him for years, and his wife too. That would have lowered the level of apprehension that I think ALL single women have.
@sonjaheck3156 In my past I have bern followed around the mall by a strange man I didn't know until I deliberately lost him. A short time later in the same mall an much older man approached me & asked me to spend the day either you for money. Do yiu think I was going to say yes to that? Then at my workplace in my early 20' I was sexually harnessed by a department manager who had to be in his 60's. I was afraid of him. And every one liked good Ole Sal. He seemed like a nice old grandfather type until that happened, I asked to br transferred to a different store & I was. Some years later in the workplace I was groped by a black man. I reported it to the local policec nothing could be done it was his word against mine, I was told. Like I said in my previous comment a lot of sick men & women out there. Mu son was employed by a local pedophile who was caught & charged, spent time in prison lost everything. When I lived there was a pedophile who lived across ftom my apt. When I was on my way to school I was abducted. I lost my childhood that day. I often wondered... Why? I still don't have an answer. But I would go on to endure even more. Thank you for sharing this traumatic experience with all of us who will never know why.
I’m so very sorry you’ve had to endure so much violence in your life, Rosemary💐🌹💕Those of us who lived through assaults are never the same person as before, not worse, just made different. Evil is the only reason for any of the things we deal with or hear about.
@Cassundra Wells I have admitted to my childhood abuse on UA-cam before. Sometimes it's the anonymity of it that gives comfort in admitting what happened to you. Calm down
My experience is that some people are just evil. I know many don't believe that, but I've seen and dealt with criminals for years, and while often there's some underlying cause to a person's anger or aggression, in the end the majority of people who have also suffered the same or similar traumatic events in the course of their lives do not act out in such a manner. Mr. Pennington acted out against a woman that was nothing but kind to him, for the simple reason that he had evil in him, hate and envy. He sees people who have a life he doesn't, who live life and are happy and he's not, and the anger builds and he acts on it. I wouldn't be suprised to findput that he's done something exactly like this before and gotten away with it. Maybe one day he'll talk, but otherwise we'll never know. Marty is a hero. She stood up and pointed at the man that hurt her, and he can never do this again because she was strong, she faced him and she, in the end, defeated him. Good for you Marty, good for you.
Ppl who commit violent crimes in or before their mid/early twenties - maybe there are extenuating circumstances, maybe they can get help for underlying issues. Past then? Hard to say. A brain is fully formed around 26yo, and rewiring connections and overcoming one's (at that pt) extensive past experiences (and the misguided coping mechanisms est therein) become an intimidating obstacle. Behavioral therapies, medication (psychiatric, therapeutic hallucinogens, etc), and surgery (brain tumor, eg) are still options, and that previously perpetrating individual may still go on to lead a fairly normal life, but it's much less likely.
To Marti, you are the strongest woman I’ve ever seen. You are a fighter, and I’m so sorry you and your family went through this. I couldn’t fathom going through this with my mom.
I really beg women to learn from this- if a service worker shows up without an appointment, speak through the door. I’m shocked she acknowledged it was odd he was there yet she didn’t hesitate to get into the basement with him for a vague “I want to show you something” vs a specific “your heater might need a new part”…. Then when she felt creeped out by his silence she didn’t turn around to face him…. We as women are too socialized to be nice over safe, I thank god she’s still here ❤️🙏❤️

She knew him and his family. He wasn’t some worker that just showed up at her house unknown to her. What makes this so scary to me is the fact that she had no reason to believe he intended to harm her. So no I don’t open my door when I’m home alone either unless it’s someone I know.
With no man around, they think you’re stupid. And vulnerable. It happens a lot.
This may sound anti-feminist, but I might suggest getting a LARGE pair of used men's workboots to place by your front door. EDIT: to be clear, if someone has committed a lengthy string of rapes or sexual abuse of children or egregious murders, etc, I think the court and expert advisors should be able to protect society from this person in a meaningful way. AMEN!!!!
she should not let him in and go into the basement .her instinct failed her.
He was yelling,
"C' mon!
Being nice can get you killed. Never follow social niceties over your instinct. Especially true for women.

Yeah he is not in control of himself.
We all realize it. Its just the justice system failing again. He only has 18 years left.
I'd visit him at the prison and basically tell him to stay away or else.

He'll definitely get out. And you can thank LiberalDA's for that.
Thanks Dems!

As a trauma analyst, I’m shocked with that much head trauma she could remember. Be proud of those scars, Marti, and don't hide them. They spell "survivor."
Most people would want to hide the scars. Especially women. Doesn’t mean that she feels devalued more as a human being because of those scars., I think somebody that didn’t have the kind of live and support from their family and coworkers that she did might feel devalued by such physical scars. . But if you have a strong family like that that supports you and loves you usually have higher self-esteem to begin with than people who don’t…such as the guy who did that to her. In my opinion, it had something to do with power. Everything pointed to Marti being a powerful force with just her size to say otherwise.
