The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951 film review)

- The Day The Earth Stood Still is now one of my favorite science fiction films, and is without a doubt one of the finest films of the 1950s. The film has a superbly paced, morally complex narrative with deep, engaging characters, a phenomenal anti-hero in Klaatu and great effects.

I was totally freaked out by this movie when I was a kid. The acting is superb, and after all these years it still holds up. A classic for sure!
Yep. Me too. Debuted the year I was born. I never get tired of watching it 👍
Klaatu's society is not totalitarian repression. The robots act only against aggression -- they don't impose any other restrictions on how the member worlds govern themselves. Gort itself demonstrated that it can assess appropriate levels of response. When Klaatu was injured but not killed, it only disarmed the soldiers. And it was prepared to follow Klaatu's directives on other matters. But in response to aggression, the robots are completely autonomous. As Klaatu states: "We don't claim to have achieved perfection. But we have a system. And it works."
ПРИШЕЛЕЦ КЛАТУ уних палицыя состоит из мощных и сильных роботов а ни потрулируют планеты на кораблях
wonder if our present day AI developments will become a totalitarian repression
'Day The Earth Stood still' and 'Forbidden Planet' The genesis of serious dramatic science fiction. Never beaten until 'Alien'
What about The 1953 version of The War of the Worlds?
@@Nonamearisto it body slams everything
@@prussianbirdproductions56And 'Them!' 'This Island Earth.' 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers." 'The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.' 'The Thing From Another Planet.' The 1950s was a golden age for sci-fi cinema, despite the large amount of drek also produced.
The 1951 day the earth stood still is by far the best...I was a kid when I saw it...the robot gort scared me stiff
I agree with you 110% on the original film, but I found the remake to be an absolute POS! I was hugely disappointed, expecting the story to show Klaatu's successor's return to earth to get humanity's answer to the question posed by Klaatu as he gave his final speech.
The only thing about the 2008 film I like is that Keanu Reeves starred as Klaatu but even then the acting was quite horrible and in contrast to the original made it look cheesy.
The day the earth stood still and Forbidden planet are indeed masterpieces. I enjoy watching them every now and then. They will be with us , more years to come.
70 years old now and it is still amazing. I would love a full colour version.
Well said sir, totally agree with you, it’s my most favourite film with forbidden planet 🌏 in a very close 2nd.
This Island Earth could be a close third?
This film is one of my favorites and I always thought the story line is very believable as it could even happen today. The 50's and 60' had many great sci-fi movies to watch that are classics.
A well dressed alien walking in to the living room where the paranoid and frightened guests are listening to news about the frightening alien is a superb example of building tension in a scene, probably the penultimate example. It also highlights our own human prejudices and how quick with fear we can become over the slightest provocations.
Thank you for this very insightful review of The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's one of my favorite movies of all time!
Well written and articulated review. Thanks.
First saw this in 1958 at Jr high school. They would show about a half hour of a film each day during lunch. Seeing on the big screen gave it more impact.
Wonderful review of the 1951 "The Day The Earth Stood Still." Very insightful.
The remake was a travesty; an example of flashy CGI trumping good film-making, writing and acting. Also, the other film clips inserted in the review didn't add anything. They detracted from your otherwise excellent production.
The remake was a piece of shyte.
The remake dealt with a very different issue being climate change instead of violence and tackled the problem quite well but the acting was wooden.
No remake of a classic....please forgive me...is disposable. Not that they tried, on.y that the bar was set far too high.
Hard to decide who was the most robotic, Gort or Kaneau Reeves in the new version...
2:14 Hey Look ! at the back of the room , that's Aunt Bea (Frances Bavier) from the Andy Griffith Show
Without special effects they created the drama in our minds .
they do use special effects though
@@Stargirlsadie Rarely, for the time.
But as @MrTom1379 pointed out, the drama created in your mind outperforms any CGI crap. Perhaps being born in the age of radio drama has jaded my view?
And, that is the best sci fi!
I have to watch this movie again.
The one thing that I can't can't forget was having a spacecraft from anothers world guarded by one soldier only. Oh my...
Love this movie. I've probably seen it over 50 times so far. By far the best sci fi movie ever.
Great analysis! Thank you!
I think you missed the point totally, what you call authoritarianism of Klaaru Society I call law and order, he said in the film you don't lose any rights you just lose the right to act irresponsibly, this is very relevant today as we see with the media calling peaceful protest which are actually violence attacks on people destruction of property, it's not a question of just tribalism or left or right politics ,it's whether individuals or groups can act in a civilized manner. The second criticism I have you go to the remake at the end of your review which was a terrible movie and you gave it praise .
Great review......always loved this movie
This film will always be one of my favorire sci fi movies, i agrree with your video, ill never forget the haunting musical score . Each character, especialy Michael Rennie have become unforgettable icons.
Great video, as always
This is a great review! Thank you. I only differ with your view of "squabbling" competition. Competition engenders innovation. Centralized control eventually produces conformity and poverty.
The USSR consistently beat us into space, dude, and Soviet citizens had a more nutritious diet overall.
This is amazing film loved this film so true of human stupidity very clever film😇🙏🌟👍
A "Carpenter" comes down from the sky and warns us to get along...I wonder where that idea came from?
Very insightful
He also rises from the dead 😎
Why remake a classic? Leave it alone. An excellent narrative on your part. We need more Gorts watching over our world.
@Cole Warner Reviews I never did see the remake. But I do love Kathy Bates acting. And the original Gort was the best. I still think about how great it would be if we had one of him patrolling our planet.
I had a straight laced no nocense Great Aunt that loved this movie..... I did too !!
I didn’t realize how close to the end of the world war this film was made, until now. Makes more sense now.
Quality productions always stands the test of time...one of the top 3 sci fi movies ever produced...that's Sam Jaff E...
I chuckled a bit at that!
The most important sci -fi film of all time BASED ON REALITY.....The most important message
I agree this is the greatest sci-fi flick of the 20th century. Along with the sci-fi flick The Thing also made in 1951.
Have you seen “Forbidden Planet” from 1956?

Definitely my favourite Sci Fi movie of the 20th century. My Father took me to see it in Moshi, Tanganyika when I was 10 and I was enthralled by it. In my opinion hasn't been equalled since.
Movie looks very interesting my friend.
I barely saw the film today and absolutely fucking loved it. I already placed an order for the bluray on Amazon.
Another error: Gort's suit is foam rubber, not spandex as you say.
Hi..Do you know how can I find its soundtrack In appropriate format?
If there was ever a film that DEMANDED colourisation, it must surely be this one !...
Please don't...never tamper with an artist's vision...this film was beautifully filmed in black and white and should be respected as such
I agree.....it IS one of the best , if not the best film Ive even seen. I saw it every spring on TV in Philly, and it became one that my firneds and I always wanted to see.....even today...she admits its her favorite film too.
GREAT ANALYSIS ; I always believed there cannot be another GORT Lock Martain.
The Special Effects, The Music and The Cinematography, Directed by Mister Robert Wise,Who Also Directed Star Trek:The Motion Picture
If you listen to the score In the movie
The Day the Earth Stood Still was
also heard in the 1960s Sci Fi show
Lost In Space which starred Guy Williams
and June Lockheart .
I'm just about old enough to have watched this in the cinema, it was shown as a re run along side another film of the time this was not the main film, although I can remember this more than the other film what ever it was. a great film of its time and so was the remaking using lots of CGI.
It is the best sc/fi film ever made.
Love reading the different ways people interpret this movie in the comments
Best movie ever the story line is so true unfortunately we don't get on together the movie might be old but so far ahead of its time
It's the music, music ,music!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe something like that need to really happen so the leaders can come together and listen because nobody seem to care if the world is nuck or not but something need to happen
Great movie thanks so much love it
One of the greatest movies ever made. One of few four star excellent movies ever made in the sci-fi genre. Only the second movie in the Star Wars series is the only other four star sci-fi movie that I can think of.
How bout “Forbidden Planet”, made in 1956?
Man ego is what will destroy him!
“Gort? But he’s a robot. Without you, what could he do?”
“He could destroy your world.”
"There's no limit to what he could do."
Well..... There's that.
This Movie is Also Like an Episode of The Fugitive TV Show
2 trivia questions. What time did the earth stand still and what technology was used to do this?
Sam's last name is pronounced Jaff-ee, not Jaff.
The original film is a masterpiece of moviemaking at the height of the 20th century but the remake sucked in comparison to the first and because of this The Day The Earth Stood Still will be a timeless classic to be enjoyed by generations to come.
I totally agree !!!
The Robot has A Lot of Control
Why re make it when you got the best
11th Commandment: Thou shalt not remake a classic.
My face is dead center twice @ 8:42 along with photographic evidence of Santa Claus- picture on my facebook page.
If Klaatu came in peace, why did he come with a weapon that could destroy Earth?
@Frank Parrish Saw the movie multiple times years ago and in retrospect it is a bunch of socialist utopian hogwash. Gort vaporizes two soldiers just standing guard even though they would have been powerless against him. If Helen had not interceded, Gort would have destroyed the world.
Solid!
KEK!
top of the line
The Ponderosa is in peril.

You might want to Google the legend of Valiant Thor. People have said he was a real life character much like Klatu
this isn't a review, it's a complete retelling of the movie.
While Klaatu's actions and the space totalitarianism he espouses are creepy by today's standards, it would have been seen as more justified at the time the movie came out, especially after the horrors of World War 2. Now it seems like he's almost a villain.
klatu barada nicyo means chopper lockie bell
My only quibble with your review is that Klaatu says explicitly that it was not their concern how we ran our planet so I question your view that their system was a repressed totalitarian one. Gort and his kin were only responsible for dealing with acts of aggression.
"Carpenter" comes to earth preaches peace carries out miracles dies and lives again . Nope just me. I'm pretty sure I've herd that story somewhere.
Exactly
interest that qauntumjoker did not mention good vs. evil: typical 21th century there is no right or wrong: but there is a right and there are wrongs

Gort was totally under used in the remake, his size and mobility could've "stolen" the movie
People , what more warning do you need really think about the world as it is now we are given only one choice . Be at all times with respect and love , prayer for all , the earth , universe is a living alive process given by God to us . Be wise , be careful.
The original movie was great. The remake sucked.
0:24 I wish those Republicans in Washington would stop playing Frisbee !
Please Please re-edit this review and remove any reference to the re-make..
Jaff is pronounced Jaff ee
Just watch the movie and draw your own conclusions...this guy sounds like some professor in a college literature class...who thinks he's got it all figured out...nobody has it all figured out. I had one female professor who always came to the conclusion of short short story, that the problems exposed in the story was caused by men...lol That's the way her mind worked...I dropped that class like a hot potato...
this film review missed the nuance of the movie...........
poorly analysed
Chenin Blanc it missed your interpretation of it, his summary stated we need all views. You missed that.
Me pareció una mierda de peli
Weak!!!
