Wonderful channel! As a little girl, I had a black metal robot, about one foot in height. His legs & feet were rectangular, & his torso & head were square. His chest was covered by a plastic panel, covering multi-coloured flashing lights. He was battery-operated, walked, & made whirring noises (as well as lighting up). I just loved him! Klaatu: "If something should happen to me, I'm worried about Gort and what he might do!" Benson: "He's a robot, without you what could he do?" Klaatu: "There's no limit to what he could do! He could destroy the Earth!"
In the book, Gort was in control, not Klaatu. The premise of destroying humanity to save the Earth makes a lot more sense if the machines are in charge.
Two great movies with Gort in The Day The Earth Stood Still, and Robby The Robot. Even today I still watch them on video or You Tube . Thanks for sharing.
Russell Garcia, who wrote the musical score for the movie, told me in an email years ago that he created the "sound" of the machine as it traveled through time by using various musical instruments.
I love this film. So ahead of it’s time with its message of the destructiveness of war. I remember watching this film years ago and, as Gort emerged from the craft and the eerie music played, there was a huge clap of thunder outside. ‘Shiver’. Brilliant. And your Gort, Robbie and the Time Machine are fabulous. Very interesting video. Thank you and well done from England.
There were actually 3 fiberglass Gorts made, because 7ft tall Lock Martin was physically not strong enough to stay in the rubber Gort suit for more than around half an hour. 3 foam covered in fiberglass Gorts were made so that the support stands would be hidden during filming, IE if Gort was being filmed from the right side the support stands would be on the left side and so on and so on. Just found your channel, enjoying it greatly.
You almost got it right. There were 3 foam suits made for the reason's you gave. Were there support pannels inside the foam suits say the breast plate and maybe the back ? Probably, but nothing in the legs or crotch. So far short of being a fiberglass gort body, just a few suport pannels at the most. Poor old Lock Martin, that must have been so hot and heavy to be inside of. But only 1 fiberglass robot. I have pictures of the fiberglass gort being made in the studio prop shop. The fiberglass gort was use for a the mechanical head shoots and some pull back shots, you can always spot it as the arms are out the flying position.
Just came across this video, excellent re-creation of Gort. I remember when I first ever saw the film, I couldn't get how you couldn't see any seams in the robot or the flying saucer, then of course there was the slit of light that seems to rove back and forth when the mask lifts up, always seemed sinister and even more so with the brilliant music. This film, along with War of the World's and The Time Machine, which I noticed you have, are my favourite three sci fi film's of all time.👍🇬🇧
One of the earliest sci fi movies I remember from childhood and still a favourite. I have a couple of small Gorts but nothing like this. Very, very cool.
I'm afraid if we had many Gorts here on Earth to keep the peace, there wouldnt be very many people left on the planet. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Magnificent! I can’t imagine a more thrilling recreation short of giving it the destructo-ray he uses in the film. It takes a dyed-in-the-plutonium science fiction fan / monster kid to appreciate what you’ve done, and this one’s giving you a standing ovation. You know more about Gort than I’ll ever forget, I’m quite certain, so it’s for anyone else reading this that I’ll mention the name of the man who wore the Gort suits (plural, one seen only from the front and entered from the back, the other seen only from the back); Lock Martin, who went on to appear in two other genuine classics of ‘50s sf, Invaders from Mars and The Incredible Shrinking Man, and may play a yeti in the not quite classic The Snow Creature. I’m keen on recognizing anyone who sweats and bakes in a robot or monster suit, having some brief experience on stage. In closing I’ll ask if your Tobor and Time Machine are also recreations, although I expect to find you’ve given us videos on those beauties, and I can’t fathom Bob Burns letting the Time Machine slip away. Did I mention in any of this how much I enjoyed your video? Thanks for sharing it with us. All the best to you!
Yes I built the Time Machine from studio prints, Bob's original Time Machine has to many parts that have been replaced with new parts that are not quite right for me. Yes I have visited Bob and the Time machine, Bob even let me sit in the Machine. That is something he almost never let anyone do. The Tobor the great is 1 of two I built as I had the chance to work from the actual movie Tobor prop. Yes you will find videos on these props in my Robothut channel.
@@Robothut Thank you! Bob also invited me to sit in the Time Machine when I visited in October of 2000, at which time I was tremendously fat. I should have refused such a profoundly generous offer, but the flesh is weak even when there are nearly 300 pounds of it. I don’t have to tell you how delicate those railings are, but with Bob and the late Richard Valley, editor of Scarlet Street magazine helping me, I ever so carefully managed and had the photo of a lifetime taken. I could never do more than aspire to such remarkable trust. The sort of kindness exemplified by Bob and Cathy Burns really comes from somewhere out of this world! Lastly (I don’t mean to draw you into a long chat) is it true that Tobor was displayed in front of some store for years and was eventually stolen?

Mike….You are so correct about the clarity and pure beauty of this Movie….Timeless is the word…..The Interior of the Aircraft is the best I have ever seen…..The musical score is understated but incredibly effective….
My favorite movie of all time. My favorite line in the movie is when Patricia Neal said " Gort? But he's a robot. Without you, what could he do? Klaatu : There's no limit to what he could do. He could destroy the Earth." .....WOW
when gort came slowly walking up and the visor open, that is when the can of whoop ass was full open. he was a cosmic police force made to keep the peace in the universe. just one gort could kill all of mankind and reduce the planet to a burned out cinder. now that is scary as hell.
Tilting the head first before the visor rises really adds to the effect, good thing he doesn't move. Well done by the way and thanks for going to all the effort.
Wow! Incredible Gort replica; love the mechanics of the visor and the head!! Really impressive! Day the Earth Stood Still has always been one of my favorite films; I've probably watched it over 100 times. On my part I have built and painted several of the Billiken Gort Klaatu model kits; garage kits are a hobby of mine. Wonderful video, thanks for sharing!
Great job! Bernard Herrmann's original theremin music really helped to sell the initial fright and is indispensable for any Gort reproduction. I'd love to purchase a smaller Gort reproduction, (toy model) say 12" high or so. Were any ever made?
Yes there are resin models of Gort in that size. do a search for "Gort model" and you will find them. Monsters in motion might still make them as well.
I was not brought up on TV, and have no regrets. But I had to earn the privilege to watch one weekly program, and this movie in particular when it came on. I was so intrigued and mesmerized by this movie.
Great segment! I seem to recall seeing somewhere that there was a larger scale head of Gort created for the closeup shots in the film to show his visor raising and the light beam pulsating. Bob Burns owned it?
No. The Movie mechanical head was the head on the Movie fiberglass body. Bob burns has a fan made head in his collection that I have seen in person when I visited Bob in his basement back in the 1990's with Bill Malone.
Hi John, another great video on another famous robot “Gort” . An awesome movie and such a great message to us all , I guess Klattu was right . John your builds are inspiring !! Was there a particular metallic paint you used ?? It’s silvery but the paint gives you those nice metallic gray shadow tones . Do you have any great recommendations for the best “Gort” paint ?
Well on my first Gort I tried sanding and priming and rattle can painting with metalic Aluminum paint. but the color was not as even looking as I wanted and with a few more gorts to go I ended up taking them to a automotive shop for the sanding priming and painting with automotive paints. I picked the color from samples they had in shop. So many years ago I do not recall the color number or anything like that. Sorry.
Im nearly 55 and this was /is still a milestone in sifi for me.at the time of being a kid it was all about planet of the apes and sinbad .this was before the star wars era. Gort was so impressive. Being watched and blown up etc.brilliant. bullets sounds being played backwards. Yes mate

Very interesting how smart people adapt and improvise to overcome any objective. Great work by the way, brilliant, like the brits say. super. cool. I loved it. just watched "the day the earth stood still" again yesterday. fantastic collection.
The Time Machine, my all time favotite moviw. Quite a collection you have. Thanx for the post..
George Fanchino
My favorite movie of all time. My favorite line in the movie is when Patricia Neal said " Gort? But he's a robot. Without you, what could he do? Klaatu : There's no limit to what he could do. He could destroy the Earth." .....WOW
A classic movie shoot in a way that still holds up to this day.
GORT SPECIAL EFFECTS
TIMELESS
when gort came slowly walking up and the visor open, that is when the can of whoop ass was full open. he was a cosmic police force made to keep the peace in the universe. just one gort could kill all of mankind and reduce the planet to a burned out cinder. now that is scary as hell.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Simply superb, my all time favourite scifi film as a kid, well done!
I still love this movie-timeless
I agree.
it is a thinking mans sifi film perhaps closer to the truth than we may think
I'm in awe... Just the first shot of the video... Gort, Tobor, and the Time Machine...😲😲😲
Awesomeness. I have a S5 3D printer. Going to have to print Dan's robot head. Thanks again for sharing your video.
Loved this film saw it when I was about 8 , it shit the life out of me ! Now it’s a enjoyable classic thanks for bringing this 👍🛸
Love, Love, Love! Thank you for this! I own a copy of this movie and watch it anytime it's on TV.
Hands down...Gort is my favorite Si-Fi Robot by far. i have a 5" die cast model of him on my desk in front of the computer.
Cool. I also have the cast metal Gort and resin Gort's and a windup gort.
Truly a labor of love and a testament to your love of classic Sci-Fi! An amazing collection sir!-John in Austin
Thank you.
Great movie indeed! I have the robot model!👌😎👍great collection you got there man!
Thank you.
Wow really cool John … a lot of thinking and work to do … amazing …
In the movie how did they make the laser blast 💥 from Gort ?
Frame by frame they hand draw that sort of visual effect on to the film negative back then.
@@Robothut all for entertainment . I happen to believe that movie could be true It was so well done . I wish Gort and kluto comes and stops that war !
Gort is the coolest robot ever, aided by the sounds of the thermin.
You have TOBOR in addition to GORT. How cool is that? You lucky dog. Would love to see your whole collection. Great video.
You can find lots of videos of the collection in my Robothut channel.
Wow. Incredible work. And despite being from a very old scifi flick, this thing has a very strong presence, and looks very threatening. Great job.
Thank you.
@@Robothut are you selling more of them?
@@Strateggo Fred Barton Production's sells them, from the same mold.

2 of my favorite movies, Time Machine #1, and The Day the EARTH Stood Still....
I was not brought up on TV, and have no regrets. But I had to earn the privilege to watch one weekly program, and this movie in particular when it came on. I was so intrigued and mesmerized by this movie.
For me it was the 1960's The Time Machine. Once a year it would come on TV.
Brilliant OMG and love the Time Machine model here.. Epic!
You can find a video just on the Time Machine on my Robothut channel.
Gort is my favorite movie or TV robot. Very simplistic, intimidating and futuristic.
One of my favorite movies.
Still holds up after all these years. Great film.
IMO, the original Day the Earth Stood Still remains THE perfect science fiction of all time.
My dad Herb Grimberg fabricated the plexiglass half bubble in the ship .
Wow, thats great. Any stories or pictures you can share about his work on the project ?
This is so great, thank you for posting this video
So glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for commenting.
Great video! Most interesting.
Only seeing this now. Great work by all. 🙂🇮🇪☘️
Thank you.
Amazing collection.
Thank you for commenting. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Sorry.
TOBOR the Great, and Gort.
So FREAKING cool!
You must have an incredible Sci-Fi collection!!
What can one say except "SUPERB" !!!!!!!!!!!
Im nearly 55 and this was /is still a milestone in sifi for me.at the time of being a kid it was all about planet of the apes and sinbad .this was before the star wars era. Gort was so impressive. Being watched and blown up etc.brilliant. bullets sounds being played backwards. Yes mate
Love all the life size models….I want them too! Can fans buy same lifelike models? Where and costs would be interesting for fans . Thanks for posting. 👍🏴✌️👏
Fred Barton Production sells life size robots for display. Google his web site for prices and robots offered.
I love your George Pal 1960 Time Machine. Did you build that Time Machine. One of favorite movies growing up as a kid.
Yes I built a few of them. Here is a video on the Time Machine I did.

This made me smile. Thanks Robothut!
Great piece of work. Well done.

What a collection! The Time Machine too. That said, TDTESS is without a doubt the best Sci-fi movie ever made. & Michael Renee? Be still my beating 💜
i have a picture of me with this guy at a shop in Providence Rhode Island who had one for me it was like being in the movie for second that when i saw it. the guy is awesome if you come here, he has the shop on North Main St. you may get a chance to buy something and get to see it. the dude in this shop is the coolest person! oh a time machine HG wells AND WE WERE GALACTIC CRIMINALS you are Blessed!
I still find Gort to be AWESOME. The new movie couldn't approach the effect
I love this really detailed.. love the photos
great... just freaking great... love it!
Well obviously you were in the special effects department, of said movie company, and I especially enjoyed the technical aspect of how you take styrofoam and sand and chip out chunks and sculpt Gort. I am an artist and sculptor and was a musician on RCA records touring with all the legends of country music, about the time you were sculpting. Very interesting how smart people adapt and improvise to overcome any objective. Great work by the way, brilliant, like the brits say. I see the time machine, but I don’t think that’s actual size but I bet u made that too. Well enough gossiping, well done. 😎
The Time machine is actual size and built by me from the studio blue prints and visits with the actual prop.
Absolutely fantastic! Are those little robots from Silent Running?
Yes I built drones 1 , 2 & 3 . maybe I should do a video on that as well. Also the smaller 3d printed versions of them are my builds.
@@Robothut just watched your interesting 3d robot build video, tks for pointing it out and look forward to more.
@@dgordon2991 So glad you enjoyed the videos.

Well, the 1951 version is the only version :)... Da Best. Great video.
So true.
thanks for sharing - also a nice shot of another mechanical hero "Tobor the Great" (1954) - I always wondered what happened to him
Here is a video I did on Tobor you might like.

Very cool when you demoed the head action and visor. I thought it was going to be static. Great work and thanks for the video (from England). A favourite film from my childhood like many.
Thank you for commenting, so glad you enjoyed the video.
Amazing. Astounding.
Wow! Wonderful, nice work on a excellent project! I’d love to create a syndicate to build a few.
Greet our prime minister with him (England )😎
very kool movie i have it dvd still gives me chills when i watch it
Thanks for sharing. Gort is amazing. I have a smaller glow-in-the-dark 3-D printed version of him on my desk. Favorite robot ever. Tesla should use the look for their Tesla Bots.
Fantastic work, sir, and kudos for preserving the most enduring piece of cinematic history in the world of sci-fi!! A tremendous amount of work and dedication must have gone into that project. As I look around your shop, I recognize The Time Machine from George Pal's rendering of H.G. Wells' classic, the space ship from " Lost In Space" and some wonderful photos on the wall. Is this a museum open to the public, or is it your private workshop? I'd give my eye teeth to see this place! The Day The Earth Stood Still is my favorite movie to this day (I'm 69 years old) and saw it for the first time in 1961. Never gets old!
Its my privet museum that I show to fellow collectors and lovers of Sci Fi. Well up until the wife and I started having all kinds of heath problems. I am older than you.
@@Robothut: thank you for your response and sorry to hear about your health problems! I just had a spinal fusion 8 months ago, and it has placed the kibosh on traveling. More reason to indulge in watching these great films. Great talking to another sci-fi fan!
Can you imagine a Drama class at a high school or community college making this movie into a play?
Interesting idea. I wonder if it has been done.
Awesome , Thanks Robothut 😊
My favorite film. I’ve been looking for a full size Gort for awhile. If more are made, I’d be interested.
Fred Barton Productions makes them now. You can goggle the web site.
@@Robothut I did see those available but yours look more accurate, especially the visor and light.
As a kid Gort was terrifying , made such an impression on my young mind that even today nothing comes close. If I ever win the lottery it is the first thing I will buy ( Oh God I hope my wife doesn't read this ) !
I think your safe, no way the wife will see this unless she is into robots & SCI FI as well.
@@Robothut Is that TOBOR in the video as well ??
@@skoot2u Yes I built 2 replicas of Tobor the Great based on template from the movie prop robot. The other is owned by Frted Barton Productions.
