I spent a lot of money on this filmstock & wasn’t that impressed. I always see other people produce great shots with it though, so maybe I need to change my subjects.
I've used it once. But like Willem says: in overcast light it mostly seems to produce subdued colors. And pretty much all the photos I took had the orange halos in some area, which I'm not really a fan of either. I found the whole kinda underwhelming. So it really isn't a very versatile film at all. Which I think isn't really the point of it anyway.
I really like how you're critiquing your own photos! It would be neat to see more of this in future videos. Or possibly having people send in their own film photos and have you critique them. Always a treat to see a new video of yours pop up in my subs!
People can shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds. I can hold the camera steady at 1/15 of a second with a 50mm lens 35mm film. The trick is you have to push the shutter release very slowly. It is kind of like shooting a gun if you have ever done that.
Great videos. Love your work, and wish I'd had your skills when I was that young. If you think that shooting ISO 50 is tough with the slow shutter speeds and mid to wide apertures - you should have been around in the days of Kodak Kodachrome 25 transparency film. I used to shoot lots of glossy magazine work back in the 1980's and it was mostly all done in Kodachrome 25 in 35mm. A tripod was a must if you wanted a good depth of field. But the results were fantastic.
Great video! I’m a big fan of the channel. Just a thought - it would be really cool if you could make a video like this for Ektar 100. I always see AMAZING photos online shot on Ektar but I really struggle to create nice results and I know that it is regarded as a difficult film to shoot well. Love your work man
I absolutely love this film. It's one of my favorites. I find it doesnt handle overexposure really well. It gives everything a green/orange overcast. I'd recommend shooting some portraits with it. I love the skin tones on this, especially at sunset.
Ah ha, I knew they must have cut their rolls slightly short or something. I think Lomography does this, too. I'm a stickler for hitting the Start point, but always seem to have weird cutoffs with these brands. Thankfully, the results on the rest of the rolls make it worth putting up with. I expected to be underwhelmed with the 50D, but I shot it in some mild overcast and strongly backlit and was blown away by how soft it all fell because of the halation. It's not something I'd shoot as often as the 800T and especially the other films, but it's a keeper in certain situations.
Love those tones in 2:22 I’ve only shot 800t, not sure when this film would come in handy but I’ve only ever shot 160 or higher in colour, so would like to give it a go
As someone who drops random film in his shopping cart whenever he needs something from B&H, I'm glad to see my purchase vindicated. Can't wait to try it.
I love that little area in Cleveland - Wendy Park/Whiskey Island and the super cool old Art Deco Coast Guard station. I have tons of photos from there. I like to ride my bike up from Akron through the Cuyahoga Valley.
Hey Willem, I just wanted to let you know that I shot a roll of 800T a month or so ago and had that exact same circular chemical mark at the end of the roll as well as the cut off of my last image. Super bummed about it because it should've been a favourite. Instead it was ruined... honestly feel like the film is a tad gimmicky and not very versatile on top of the negatives I already mentioned. That said, I did enjoy the colours from the film as experimental image making but not for more serious work.
Nice video! I really like pushing this film one stop. It warms up a little bit and adds a hint more contrast, which I like. But the grain is still very fine. All the CineStill films are great for pushing, really.
Willem, great shit I gotta say! Your work is what inspires me the most these days to go out again shoot film. I am usually more of a conceptual photographer who can't really get something out of the environment I live in because of aesthetic reasons and my own picky mind. So I usually have to create spaces and scenes that "correspond" to me. But your images and seeing your workflow just does something to my photographer eye and all of a sudden I find interest in things that never spoke to me before.
Honestly I love this film, when I’ve shot it I end up having to pull back the yellows in the mid tones a bit, super sharp though and the dynamic range is very good
I’m pretty sure the round chemical dot means the length of film you got was from either the beginning or end of the original Kodak film reel Cinestill cut the film from. When I’ve shot 16mm, the very start of the film reel before I start getting an image has a circle in the middle. It’s probably just there as a clear indicator of the start/end of a reel to show that the white overexposed image isn’t due to a camera malfunction.
Hint hint 50iso really needs a tripod. I know you said it but if you aren’t down with the tripod then 50iso might not be your ticket. That shot of the pipe really shows the cool color pallet this film can get though. At 13-18$ a roll depending on where you get it I’m not seeing the benefit over other films like portra or even ektachrome e100. I feel like the cinestill is an option for harsh light situations where there is a ton of contrast but yeah like you said it seems kinda drab in overcast light.
Cool video. I received the same stickers on Protra 800 but lab never notified me of A, any type of spacing issue (using a 220 back hassy for 120 film) and B that the sticker was in the frame. Boutique Film Lab is low on quality assuraance until after you raise an isse and then its oh yeah its your fault
I love Cinestill 50d! I find it comparable to Kodak ultra max. But it’s really nice to use in brighter days for sure, also doesn’t cost as much as 800t in the aftermarket.
I always shoot 50D at ISO25 - which is a challenge on Medium Format without a tripod. Love the results when I do, but hate the process of getting the shots unless on 35mm with F1.2/1.4 lenses.
50D is my go to architecture and landscape film. It is so sharp, that even with an 35mm SLR, and a decent lens, you can get stuning resoults. It's a bit too much for me to shoot street with it,, (my main thing), but nevertheless, I just LOOVE this film.
Hey Willem! love your work! maybe you can do a video on how you archive your negatives, been struggling to develop a good system myself! looking forward to the next video!
50D always has such a strong green color cast. I feel like its very apparent in that first snap. To me this film just isn't worth the amount of work I have to do in post.
Do a video comparing photos with and without your black pro mist filter for portrait or fashion analog photography. I've only seen videos mostly showing it used for video.
Loving your work , man, I put down my digital for a while because of you, I wanted to ask, can you explain what pushing/pulling film is? And how it changes the picture.
Lower ISO film reacts to light slower than higher ISO film, so to get a right exposure, lower aperture is used so the lens is more wide open and more light enters through.
50 ISO 120 films do not make sense unless you can stop down with a tripod. I had a roll of 120 ISO 50 Fuji slide film in my 6x6 camera with 12 frames. Took me half a year to finish that role because I only shot it with a tripod.
The colours here will look nothing like Vision3 cine film without the proper developer, which is ECN2. With the right developer it looks amazing and has fantastic properties. Personally, I just buy the proper Vision3 in 200ft rolls and bulk roll it for 35mm, then there are a few people who roll it for 120. For 50D, honestly, 35mm with a good lens, has amazing resolution and quality, so you almost don't need MF.
RIP to that second frame
It could’ve been an award winning photo
But instead it was wasted
Banished
Forgotten
Forever lost in the space time continuum
Even Imperfection has its own sort of perfection.
I Hate Photographers lol you got a great channel 👍
OH MY GOD WHAT IS THIS FIRE DODGE JACKET
Allison's dad gave me his old Nascar jacket :'))
Dodge: how baggy do you want the jacket? Willem: YES
Good to see I’m not the only one who wastes frames (and reacts like that NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!)
Tom Divasion yeah but have you ever accidentally put the stopper instead of the developer first
naturalskating LMFAO
Yikes. Thoughts and prayers etc
I wasted several when i was trying this cam out. Still a dope camera though
naturalskating or have youforgot to wind the roll before opening the camera 😬😬 36 photos gone in less than a second lol
As a lifelong Cleveland resident, I say without irony that you've captured the essence of the city.
thats so cute aww
“Nooo I just wasted a frame” that’s me at least once a film roll cause I still have no idea how to use my camera, it’s a little too advanced for me😂
Love 50D. I really like it for portraits, and rating it at 100 and pushing it 1 stop. 👌
I spent a lot of money on this filmstock & wasn’t that impressed. I always see other people produce great shots with it though, so maybe I need to change my subjects.

WILLEM PROVIDING THAT GOOD STUFF DURING QUARANTINE
Uploaded on my birthday, thanks willem!
Happy birthday!
ayy willem uploaded! Love from the UK
I really like how you're critiquing your own photos! It would be neat to see more of this in future videos. Or possibly having people send in their own film photos and have you critique them. Always a treat to see a new video of yours pop up in my subs!
the birthday party photo has a great 70's action movie vibe, one of my favorites for sure. greetings from Argentina!!
Awesome that you made it to Cleveland! Lots of cool stuff to shoot :)
3:39 amazing shot!
Dude the way you load youre camera is insanely satisfying
absolutely dig that yellowish tinge to these pictures. great job willem!

wow perfect timing!! was literally about to scoop some and make a similar video, willem! :)

Ektar is definitely next :)
Willem Verbeeck hey homie how about the new ektachrome while you’re at it, or just any color reversal film tbh
I absolutely love this film. It's one of my favorites. I find it doesnt handle overexposure really well. It gives everything a green/orange overcast. I'd recommend shooting some portraits with it. I love the skin tones on this, especially at sunset.

I’ve gotten that problem with Portra 800 too though🤷♀️
Love those tones in 2:22 I’ve only shot 800t, not sure when this film would come in handy but I’ve only ever shot 160 or higher in colour, so would like to give it a go
Definitely a fun one to experiment with :)

THats so weird! I would love to know more about whats goin on there
Nice video! I really like pushing this film one stop. It warms up a little bit and adds a hint more contrast, which I like. But the grain is still very fine. All the CineStill films are great for pushing, really.
I like how that chemical circle disappeared for one single frame at 6:46
Willem, great shit I gotta say! Your work is what inspires me the most these days to go out again shoot film. Project 2501 would love to see your work
I honestly really like the few defects at the end. Character.
2:20 is straight up 🔥🔥🔥
I have a roll of this film currently sat in my fridge, this video came at a perfect time!!
2:00 this is exactly why I never advance the lever after taking a shot.
oh jacket upgrade? i like
Thanks king
Just shot my first roll of film today with the minolta xe-5! Im super excited and happy to take more photo's! You are an inspiration Willem!
What film lab do you use? I’m in Bushwick and use the Bushwick Community Darkroom.
Would absolutely love to know your thoughts / see you play around with infrared film at some point!
Anyways, amazing stuff as always!!!
also a big fan of 3:30 where Allison is clearly not interested in following you around the building site, and instead just films from really far away
Only you would relate to this
What do you mean about you can't shot at a wide aperture at 50iso? Surely shooting as wide as possible lets in more light? Looove this
Honestly I love this film, when I’ve shot it I end up having to pull back the yellows in the mid tones a bit, super sharp though and the dynamic range is very good
Love how his wasted frame looked better than my best, completely intentional photos :(
Great video and photos, Willem, and nice jacket too
Now because of Corona, I'm moving to digital completely. Save money, go further and get more work. Thanks Williem for everything
I’ve been looking into trying cinistill 50d perfect timing!
I went out and shot film today in some fields because of you and ngl I think it’s portfolio worthy
christ that dodge hoodie goes so fucking hard
Do you not keep the dark slide in your camera??
I have used 50D but try Silbersaltz 50D or 200, great films!
I got a couple of very good portraits with Cinestill 50D. I bought a few more rolls and want to do some more portrait shots with it for sure!
I’m pretty sure the round chemical dot means the length of film you got was from either the beginning or end of the original Kodak film reel Cinestill cut the film from. Love your videos, man.
those colors POP. i'm about that, gonna have to give it a go
Jason saying he's cinestills ride or die bi*ch, meanwhile Willem is out here blasting through the rolls
The whole film looks greenish/yellowish. Was there no color levels errors during the scan? Like the turquoise pipe/flute one though.
I prefer 50D to the 800T. I use it in 35mm so it is probably easier to hand hold in the smaller format and get more DOF.
Hint hint 50iso really needs a tripod. I know you said it but if you aren’t down with the tripod then 50iso might not be your ticket. I just realized he was in Cleveland. I've been within meters of where he was shooting
I recognize the Cleveland Skyline in the background!
I always shoot 50D at ISO25 - which is a challenge on Medium Format without a tripod. Love the results when I do, but hate the process of getting the shots unless on 35mm with F1.2/1.4 lenses.
Waiting for my scans from a roll of this that I shot on an old Italian fixed lens camera.
50D is my go to architecture and landscape film. It is so sharp, that even with an 35mm SLR, and a decent lens, you can get stuning resoults. It's a bit too much for me to shoot street with it,, (my main thing), but nevertheless, I just LOOVE this film.
You probably mentioned that in another video, but do you scan the negatives yourself? If you do, which scanner do you use?
your film was developed film in c-41 ?
tried dev cine film by ecn-2 procces ?
the shot of allison is fire
7:10 “that’s kind of the Verbeeck”
is this the lighthouse in Cleveland?
ayeee welcome to cleveland my friend
Hey Willem! love your work! maybe you can do a video on how you archive your negatives, been struggling to

looking forward to the next video!
50D always has such a strong green color cast. I feel like its very apparent in that first snap. To me this film just isn't worth the amount of work I have to do in post.
Could somebody link that lens hood?
I love the second photo

« Noooo I just wasted a frame » I felt that
Loving your work , man, I put down my digital for a while because of you, I wanted to ask, can you explain what pushing/pulling film is? And how it changes the picture.
I haven’t seen willem’s hair in ages
OMG First ! ❤️ Love from Hong Kong 🇭🇰
Diggin' that OG Dodge Motorsports jacket. Is Willem a closet Gearhead? The world may never know.......
Why do you have to shoot at a low aperture when shooting slower film ISO?
Lower ISO film reacts to light slower than higher ISO film, so to get a right exposure, lower aperture is used so the lens is more wide open and more light enters through.
“ I only have one roll of this film so I have to save the fire” “NOOOO I waste a shot”
You should do a video “Willem Tries Digital Photography” and then try to make the photos look like portra lol.
50 ISO 120 films do not make sense unless you can stop down with a tripod. I had a roll of 120 ISO 50 Fuji slide film in my 6x6 camera with 12 frames. Took me half a year to finish that role because I only shot it with a tripod.
What about pushing 50D ?
When is the Olympus Stylus review coming??

Where did you get that dodge jacket from? Also I really enjoyed the video as always.
okay Justin Beiber HAHAHA love ya my man great shots
I rarely shoot Film but i might one day start a full time Film Photography. Also i might get the RZ instead of 645.
I shot quite a lot of 5203, and it looks just a touch better than this. But it is hard to find proper ecn-2 processing these days
Bro you should complete the set and shoot bwxx of cinestill
Willem and Chill.
WOW! He shot something other than portra for once!
I wonder why there is follow focus gear on your lens ? Btw nice video as usual ! ;)
For me cinestill is so crisp!!! I love it.
6x6 back?
great video. I'm also based in brooklyn - where do you get your film developed in the city?
I tried cinestill once but I never got to see the results. I gave the film to my friend to finish since it was his graduation being captured.
2:05 lol almost every film photographers' struggles, soft release are just too soft when bumped into it. didn't know mamiya's handle was too ;)
Cool, please try Velvia50 as well!
