I saw Cummings and Bachman play this live over a year ago and they can still crank it out for a couple of old guys pushing 80.
They've made some great albums together. Favorites are Just About Sane and Don't Talk to Him (a Cliff Richards cover).
It amazes me how well they have held up. Especially Burton, considering how hard he used to party. He was like Lightfoot in that regard.
Didn’t RB recently pass?
@@theubercaste Not that I’m aware of.
@@theubercaste His brother passed not that long ago.
Tremendous band and Burton Cummings one of the best vocalists and lead singers of the 70s. Between him and Randy Bachman, tremendous duo and songwriting team. They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as sure as the sun rises in the east every morning.
For sure!
Just about everyone who came of age in the 1970s had The Best of the Guess Who in their record collection. Good stuff.
My older brother had it and I must have listened to it about 100 times. I loved every tune.
My goodness it never amazes me some of the songs that you've never heard.
Keep up the great work and sharing. I appreciate all you do
Appreciate you Dave! :)
@@Peter2801W thanks for sharing that insight. I think one's perspective might get jaded sometimes living here in the states and hearing everything all the time I grew up in the New England area and had so many radio stations literally five rock or light rock stations to choose from growing up it was just great. You have grounded me with a reality check. Thanks.
@Peter2801W actually they were pretty big in the US , charting 14 Top 40 hit singles. I loved The Guess Who! 😊
He has one of the voices of all time great live music
1971. Junior in high school. I owned a small portable cassette player and 3 cassettes; Abbey Road, James Gang Rides Again and Best of the Guess Who. I was quite satisfied! And then I discovered Yes and music changed forever. Great selection great memories. Thanks
These Eyes, She’s Cone Undun, and Laughing are outstanding pop tunes with Burton Cummings voice shining through!
Great reaction Justin, so many more songs by the Guess Who worth checking out ie. No Time, Undun, These Eyes and Laughing to name a few. Peace and love from Toronto ✌️❤️🇨🇦
Ty JV! Sunshine from Orlando!☀️
You might have heard the hit cover of "American Woman" Lenny Kravitz had in 1998. I'd suggest listening to the song "Undun" from 1969. That song shows a jazzy touch by guitarist Randy Bachman (later of the group Bachman Turner Overdrive), because while going to high school in Winnipeg, he used to skip class to get guitar lessons from jazz great Lenny Breau. Burton Cummings sings "American Woman" when he tours as a member of Ringo Starr's Allstar Band.
Justin, Just treat yourself and listen to the entire best of the Guess Who album. Enjoy as always. Loved this group
There were times in my youth that I'd just leave this album on the turntable for weeks. Alternating with Three Dog Night's "Golden Biscuits". Throw on the Supremes Greatest Hits for a palette cleanser.
Volumes 1 and 2.
Undun, These Eyes, Share the Land - so much good stuff for you to dive into.
They have a lot of great songs. The lead singer is powerful. All the music is well done. Liked your review. Didn't know that origin story for the song.
Always loved The Guess Who. Lots of great tunes to discover with them...
I recall a story that the Guess Who had two songs and were unable to finish either one. They ended up mashing them together and got this classic as a result.
you can get their commentary on glam rock with their terrific tune 'Glamour Boy'.
Lots of great Guess Who music. My favourite is Undun.
Good choice of entry point, my 2nd favorite song of theirs. Many will point you toward "Undun". Listen to them.
Share the Land, huge hit. Undun has jazzy feel, Burton Cummings has one of the great rock voices. Many more
Love the Guess Who. The Best of the Guess Who is a great freaking album! My favorite of theirs, and there are many great ones, is the song "Hang On to Your Life". The extended version. Coming in hard and fast with a prog/psych ending. Simply killer track!
I hope you have more than the Greatest Hits. They go so deep on their albums. Songs that might surprise you: Dirty, Friends of Mine, Shakin' All Over, Guns Guns Guns, Grey Day, One Way Road to Hell, Pain Train, Truckin' Off Across the Sky, Dreams, Running Back to Saskatoon... for starters.
Their cover of Shaking All Over was their first big hit. @@debjorgo
@@maruad7577 It's not on The Best of the Guess Who that Thomas mentions having.
I wasn't saying it was. I just mentioned it as a fact I thought might be interesting in context of what the two of you had already mentioned. Sorry if it was confusing. @@debjorgo
@@maruad7577 No problem. I just thought you were questioning that I was calling it a deep cut.
FANTASTIC! These guys are basically my home town boys! Gotta represent 👍🏻👍🏻
My American Woman vinyl is autographed by Bachman 😊
Other great Guess Who cuts are "Share the Land", "No Time", "These Eyes", "Laughing", "Undone", "Hand Me Down World".
From their first album is a track "Friends of mine". Very trippy, Doors like. Virtually unknown really. That's what makes it good.
The people named in the song were, well, friends of theirs.
Canada really produced some amazing talent. Joni and Neil and The Band and Steppenwolf and Gordon etc.... lol.
Lead singer Burton Cummings also had a great solo career after the Guess Who. Chou this solo stuff. His concerts are great, he has a story for every song.
Randy Bachman has a nice jazzy style that he learned from / was inspired by Lenny Breau. Lotsa catchy riffs and jazzy solos with The Guess Who (Undun) and BTO (Lookin’ Out for Number One).
One of the strengths of The Guess Who was always their rhythm section of Peterson and Kale . No matter the song. Ballad or rock. They were tight and it always was the glue behind their songs.
Great reaction JP! I've been a Guess Who fan for most of my life (I'm Canadian, and they are a constant up here - basically rock royalty). This song is such a groovy track. Yes, the transition to segue the two tracks is brilliant.
I'd HIGHLY recommend: Shakin' All Over (from 1964/65, when they were known as Chad Allan & The Expressions - their record label credited the artist as 'Guess Who?' in an attempt to disguise their origin & hint that they might be a British Invasion act - name was revealed months later, but the DJ's kept announcing the artist as 'Guess Who' - prompted the group to change their name!)
Also: Undun, These Eyes, Laughing.
If you want to dive into some Randy Bachman (who went on to be part of the group Bachman-Turner Overdrive) - try Let It Ride!
If you can, you really should check out The Guess Who's live album, Live at the Paramount. To me it's one of the best live rock albums of all time, right up there with Deep Purple's Made In Japan and Frampton Comes Alive. Astounding musicianship and supreme vocals. By the way, New Mother Nature is on that album (without No Sugar Tonight), and it KILLS!
OMG. THIS BANGER.
Bag o’ goodies and a bottle o’ wine…
Ah the soundtrack of my childhood. My second fav Guess Who song after “UnDun”.
And yes, same band as “American Woman”. The story behind that song is even weirder than this one you reacted to.
Not a band that rewards close inspection of their lyrics. It’s the music and vocals that are the standout, not the words.
They had a number of hits at the time.
Guitarist Randy Bachmann went onto Bachman Turner Overdrive. My favorite BTO song is the atypical “Blue Collar”. I think it’s a rock song with a Bossa Nova beat?
Most people know “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” or “Taking Care of Business”
Burton Cummings segued into a solo career, with dramatic piano ballads.
A lot of drama between these two men and within the bands, but some really good music.
Bachman being a Mormon and Cummings being a hedonist might have caused some friction.
@@maruad7577 I’m sure it did.
Their lyrics don't stand close inspection? I can't let you get away with an uninformed statement like that. Are you serious? A lot of their lyrics are super serious and socially conscious and some drug induced, like a lot of the music of the late 1960s and early '70s. You must be listening to someone else or not listening to and understanding their words. Your loss.
@@timwhitnell7145 Granted this is just my opinion. While I love a lot of Guess Who songs, I’ve always found the lyrics to be the weakest part. More stream of consciousness than carefully crafted poetry. And I’m thinking of Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, John Fogerty, Steven Stills, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young. I’m sorry we don’t agree about the lyrics. But look how well their songs have stood up after over 50 years. They made some great songs overall. And The Guess Who should have been in RRHOF decades ago.
Stream of consciousness was a big thing at the time. The Doors had made an impact.@@itzel1735
I'd recommend their hits Undun, No Time, Hand Me Down World, Laughing, Share the Land and These Eyes.
Great tune and band! I liked Randy’s other group BTO and Blue Collar is awesome I think you would love it !
This has been one of my favourite Guess Who tracks since I bought the American Woman single and flipped it over. The single only had the first part (No Sugar) and I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the medley later on.
One of Canada's best bands! I saw them live 20-odd years ago on a reunion tour. It was awesome! This is one of my favourites by them.
They have a deep catalogue bro'
Try to listen to their song "Sour Suite". It wasn't much of a hit in the states, didn't even make to the top ten in Canada, but it's a really good song. As an added bonus, you would be the first "UA-cam reactor" to ever react to it! There are so many songs, Glamor Boy, Runnin' Back To Saskatoon, plus many others.
"Runnin' Back To Saskatoon" is a killer track from their 'Live At The Parmont' album. Another one from that album, "Truckin' Off Across The Sky", would be a great reaction, also.
Love "Sour Suite" too.
For me the funny part of Running Back To Saskatoon is that it is mostly just a list of Prairie towns where they played when they were honing their craft. The Beatles had Hamburg, The Guess Who had the Prairies.@@Drummingvulture
Justin, when you do Sour Suite, please do Fiddlin' which is a short fun song from the same album (So Long Bannatyne). There are reactors who would fail to appreciate it, but I am sure you will enjoy it.
You want to know what's in the fun bag? Listen to "Truckin' off across the Sky" from Live at the Paramount (1972). All kinds of illicit stimulants. It's the Reaper gonna take you for that ride!
Get's a little raunchy too. "Miss America's gonna come out of a sixty-foot cake covered in icing...."
Glad I bought that 45, thanks for the dedication, still love it.
Still like it as much as I did when I was a teenager. And as others have pointed out, they have done this live--later in their lives--and just as good.
I recommend them.
The Guess Who had a bunch of hit singles in the 70s, but most people don't realize that many of their best songs were album tracks. I would suggest "Grey Day" as an example of a great album track.
There's a possibly-local restaurant near my hometown named Jocko's. When I was there over the summer, some commentary happened about it while we were out and then I went 'I dunno, they said no when I came back last time.'
Great choice! Loved all the Guess Who albums back in the day. I’d also recommend exploring their lead singer, Burton Cummings’ solo albums that followed. Saw him solo at the Paramount in Seattle, in 1976 or 1977 - fantastic concert! He did a great cover of Bobby Darin’s Mack The Knife, which he still performs on his tours nowadays.
Always liked this tune.
Among other things, "mother nature" was a slang term for weed.
Good find Justin, keep going down their rabbit hole, please. Randy pronounced (Back-man) has shown us the meaning/ background story of all their popular songs and they are fascinating. I especially like the meaning behind Guess Who's song "American Woman", "These Eyes", "Undun" and BTO's "Taking Care of Business".
Awesome song from The Guess Who
The piano player was John Evan. Have you heard Iron Maìden's version of crosseyed Mary. I would be interested in your thoughts as they did not use flute and piano, but gave a pretty faithfull rendition.
The doctor said, "Hang On To Life", "Star Baby". I replied, in "These Eyes" it's "No Time" for "Laughing", So Long, Bannatyne! I've come "UnDun", this Artificial Paradise is just Canned Wheat! Peace & Love.
I used to work near Bannatyne. I know the neighbourhood they are referencing.
@@maruad7577 Is it anywhere near Bobcaygeon?
Not even within a 1000 miles.. It is a long way from Winnipeg to Southern Ontario.@@jamespaivapaiva4460
Hi Justin. Dave from London (a voyage of Trains And Boats And Planes away). Now, I'm not angling for a dedication but, like David O, I actually bought the single of American Woman too! Not my first 45 though - that was Please, Please Me by The Beatles.
P.S. my song ref Trains And Boats And Planes is a Bacharach/David classic by Billy J Kramer.
Justin, you have heard a lot of Guess Who in your childhood if you listened to pop radio. Might not have known it at the time, but they were all over the radio from the 1960s onward.
I recommend looking up Bachman/Cummings live videos on UA-cam from a concert tour they did as a reunion of sorts--especially I recommend the *long* version of American Woman.
I really like the Guess Who. I have a bunch of their songs. Very cool reaction to these two/(could have been one) songs. I remember listening to the Guess Who, Blood Sweat and Tears and even the James Gang back in the day. Very enjoyable Justin.
Loved this (these) song(s) since it came out, but never knew the story behind it! Thanks for passing it along!
Enjoyed the reaction. Without The Guess Who, we wouldn't have gotten Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO). BTO was started by 3 brothers, then joined by Turner a couple of years later...my favorite by BTO is "Let it To Ride"...you should give that a listen, even just on your own. Thanks for your hard work ❤
Thank you so much Sandy!
Let it Ride is good but Taking Care of Business has a better story behind it, specifically how the piece got a piano part. @@JustJP
@@maruad7577 Taking Care of Business is good too
Two songs in one love it love you
I will suggest a few songs, Justin. "Guns Guns Guns" "Hand Me Down World" "Hang on to Your Life" "Bus Rider" "Running Back to Saskatoon" and "Follow Your Daughter Home"
Guns, Guns, Guns is a great tune by the Guess Who
Burton Cummings had a solo career that bothered me personally, he became a crooner. Started out wanting to be Canadian Jim Morrison, ended up trying to be Canadian Elton John. His partner in the Guess Who, Randy Bachmann followed a more original tact . He formed BTO , and became the first 🇨🇦 to climb to the top twice in separate bands . Can you tell I'm a proud Winnipeger, and Canadian !
With a voice as beautiful as his, he SHOULD do some crooning.
Randy's name is actually pronounced Backman, but fans have pronounced it wrong for so long, that he now says he's Randy Backman from Bachman Turner Overdrive.
Yeah, that was crazy to hear, Bachman Turner Overdrive should be pronounced like "Backman". Surprising Randy took so long to correct people. (Canadian. 🙄😄)
My favorite. Remember when this came out.
Try “Share the Land”. ✌️
A very groovin band. Lots of good stuff. Share the Land is one of my favorites.
I love that voice! I think you'd also like, "These Eyes", from the previous year.
I had forgotten that they released 7 albums in 5 years, all original material iirc. An impressive feat.
I think you must have a connection to my playlist! Isn't it great?
Thank you JP. Ker. 💖
Garry Peterson on drums. Great.
Justin, I'd highly recommend a lesser known track like "Albert Flasher", fun track, great piano.
I'd also recommend an earlier track like "No Time".😊
Yes open your mind to this band, they’re all over the place. I’d like to hear the J Geils Band album Bloodshot.
I always liked this track, not quite as much as “Taking care of business,” which was my walk up music playing baseball.
I think you would like that track too.
Nice. My favorite GW song.🤘
If you like The Guess Who I would also recommend The Sheepdogs, another western Canada band that I feel has strong roots in this sound.
I'd recommend you start at the beginning with Shakin' All Over. Be sure to do the Skeleton Dance version. It's matched with a classic animated short from 1929 but it's perfect.
Love this song and the others by The Guess Who suggested in the comments. But, to suggest another two track slash song from around the same era, check out Grand Funk Railroad’s I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home. I always love to speculate on the story told in the song with others, as I’ve been told my interpretation is quite different from most others.
Hmmm. I posted something and now it seems to have disappeared.
The Guess Who, even more so than Neil Young, are a hometown band. They were part of a robust local music scene that also produced Neil Young. If you want to hear more of them then go with "Undun", "No Time", the live version of "American Woman" from Winnipeg in 2000 (Bachman breaks a string and still nails it) and "These Eyes" (which is their first real big hit). If you want esoteric the "Friends of mine" off Wheatfield Soul where the band does an imitation of Jim Morrison and the Doors.
Bachman (pronounced Backman locally) was a Mormon and Cummings a hedonist. Also there was a lot of wrangling when the drummer and bass player realized the real money (then anyway) was in the song writing royalties which were almost all going to Bachman and Cummings.
Bachman formed BTO and pumped out several more big hits while the Guess Who kept going with a different line-up. Eventually Cummings opted for a solo career. Bachman is an amazing guitarist though it is hard to tell on this track and Cummings has a great voice (again hard to tell here).
For a BTO song I would recommend "Taking Care of Business" which has a great back story as well. Bear in mind, some have suggested that the back stories may be a bit mutable.
I’m sharing this shout out with ya. We chat about dees guys fairly often.
Well, how could I not. I remember being a kid and seeing an sign up at the local YMCA saying the Guess Who would be playing there. I told me older sister and she went to the dance that night. Needless to say, and yet I say it, this is before they recorded "These Eyes". They had top 40 hits (only in Canada) before but it was all covers including one of a Neil Young song from before Neil was famous.
It's good hearing from you btw. It's always a pleasure.@@-davidolivares
Good pick!
Of course, American Woman is THE song for The Guess Who...
BURTON CUMMINGS 😊RAW POWER ON THOSE VOCALS JUSTIN👍OTHER GREAT TRACKS FROM THEM: THESE EYES, NO TIME, UNDUN😊AND THEN BURTON WOULD ALSO PLAY WITH B.T.O
True story: The title and chorus of the first song came from the writer overhearing an argument between a couple with the woman telling her man he was getting "no sugar tonight." The line was just too good to not use.
If you want funky... have a listen to "Undone" It's so cool!
Undone is amazing
Are you sure that you’ve heard their American Woman or was it the Lenny Kravitz version? Both good but the original is my favourite. The full version is much longer (and better) than the radio version.
Hmm, you may be correct about that Robert. Ty
You can't do the Guess Who without doing their song No Time.
Hey Justin! Do yourself a favor and check out The Best of The Guess Who. Every song is a hit! Awesome band!!!🎵🎼🎶🔈🔉🔊😎
Ty Jeff!
Jim Kale is a rhythmic genius. He gets way too little credit for the Guess Who's sound. His, and Garry Peterson's "spacing" (listen to the "slow motion" fills that Peterson plays - unique) "make" so many Guess Who songs. Its tough to get in front of Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman but Peterson and Kale are a legendary rhythmic section imho.
Just in case I forget, first, if you want to learn quite a lot about Opossums, and you don't mind that the singer says she was on acid that night (and I suppose, that you maybe enjoyed Trans Girls Need Guns a few months ago), then *Oh, Possum* might be just the thing for you. By *Flummox* - whose modus operandi is to flummox. ua-cam.com/video/nb0ttbxyd1E/v-deo.html
The "American Woman" you're thinking of is the Lenny Kravitz one, I think, not the Guess Who one. (I'll go get a link, and put it in a "reply" - although I suppose it's a bit of flummox to put Flummox "up top" where it's not invisible, instead of something not completely irrelevant to your reaction.
(You need to at least wait until Allison Blake Dellinger goes and fetches her possum if you decide the song excessively flummoxes everything. Although to be fair, they are called Flummox, so what else would you expect?)
ua-cam.com/video/UzWHE32IxUc/v-deo.html *American Woman*
The Guess Who version is more blue.
They seem to have quite a few members of *Bachman Turner Overdrive* in that band. (Same *BTO* that came up with long road songs like *Freeways* ua-cam.com/video/O0HuZNAQQaI/v-deo.html
- You could almost see them as a precursor to TISM's *I Drive a Truck* .
*T(his) I(s) S(erious) M(um)* ua-cam.com/video/rgBn5hPOhEk/v-deo.html (The live version is maybe a bit too intense. And they wear Australian clothing, too, which is hard to make excuses for.)
*BTO* are also *Not Fragile* ua-cam.com/video/wrNsh69J01A/v-deo.html
Ed. I forgot to mention they're Canadian, I think. I'm not sure how much that matters. And TISM is Australian. The Guess Who are more like an international supergroup.
What you probably heard was the absolutely useless Lenny Kravitz cover of American Woman.
Overall their output is dated and patchy to my ears.... still some good songs.
Pointless talking when your playing music, cant hear .Please go back to the old way of reviewing. This is not working.
Banger.
