The whole greatest hits album is a must for every roadtrip!!!! I’m from Winnipeg where most of these guys are from and where the band formed. I was walking thru the WPG airport very late one night waiting for my parents super delayed flight when a man came up from behind me gave me a playful shove and a hey how ya doin and kept going. There was no one else around everything was closed so he stunned me but he was obviously harmless . It was unfortunate that he was already out of earshot before I realized it was Burton Cummings the lead singer. I was so upset that I couldn’t tell him how much I admired and appreciated him and his work. Him and Randy Bachman who you did listen to already are definitely some of Canada’s underrated greats. Love them!!!

Love love love singer Burton Cummings & he is best childhood friends with one of my favorite musicians of all time Randy Bachman. They wrote a lot of The Guess Who songs together. Oh my goodness No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature; These Eyes; American Woman; Hand Me Down World; No Time; Laughing.....

Hey there J and Amber , this is one of my most favorite songs. You Do however have to listen to the studio version because it rocks so much harder. This sound might sound a little familiar because the guitarist is Randy Bachman of Backman, Turner Overdrive , BTO. He left to form BTO. And I know you like them.

You really should check out the studio version, a live version just can't duplicate everything about it, the placement of the instruments in the mix, the studio silent moment between transitions, Burton's voice, the round of verses at the end, this song is probably in my top 20 recordings of all time.

While this is a good live version, I generally agree with you. I always recommend people listen to the studio version first so as to hear how a song was meant to be heard. Later they can listen to a live version. I've seen live versions recommended to people that were not worth hearing. The sound was so bad you could understand what was being sung. With rare exceptions, it's always the recorded version that becomes a hit, not the live version.

A Canadian institution, from Winnipeg, Manitoba! So glad you reacted to and enjoyed!
They have a deep, deep well of hits to check! Might as well start at the beginning: Shakin' All Over (they weren't even called The Guess Who then, but Chad Allan & The Expressions), These Eyes, American Woman, No Time, Undun, Laughing, Hand Me Down World, Share The Land...for starters.
Once you take a few of these on, we'll delve in the solo careers of guitarist Randy Bachman (Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Takin' Care Of Business, Let It Ride...) & keyboard/singer Burton Cummings (Stand Tall, I Will Play A Rhapsody, My Own Way To Rock...)

  • @nicolerozon2818

According to Burton Cummings, whose show I attended a few year back, he mentioned that this mash up came about because he and Randy Bachman were writing this song and had different ideas about how it should go so they mashed up their individual versions. Probably one of the first mash ups to be done.

One of my favourite Guess who songs, especially like how at the end of the song they are blending them together. There are lots of Burton's songs from his solo career, "Stand Tall" "I will play a rhapsody" , and "Break it to them gently" are among my favourites of his.

The Guess Who was another reason I wanted to pick up a guitar. I got my first for Christmas when I was 7 years old. Went to a school of music a year later. I wanted to learn Gordon Lightfoot and the Guess Who first. My very cool teacher said; "okay sure". I learned their music freehand first, and then I learned how to read the music and theory after. I am a grandmother now, but I am 8-9 years old when I listen to these greats. Lori.C.

I had the pleasure around 1990 to enjoy a concert with Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who together. My wife and I were in our late twenties at the time. The concert was surreal because not only was the music great but instead of the usual audience filled with teenagers in ripped jeans and T-shirts, this audience was filled with people our age and older dressed in suits and evening gowns. Crazy !

For those of us that grew up in the 60's and 70's, we were SO SPOILED ROTTEN musically, it was AWESOME!! The Guess Who were a HUGE group back then, and then Randy left and formed BTO and they became a HUGE band also. There was SO, SO, SO, SO, SO MANY GREAT bands and artists back then it was truly mind boggling.
If you found a GOOD radio station, they would play hit after hit after hit after hit after hit all day and all night long and not a clunker in the bunch, it was a very special time to be alive.
I am thankful that all these videos exist so that generations that followed us can experience the talent and skills of these AMAZING groups and artists. Man do I EVER MISS the 60's and 70's.

The story of the name No Sugar Tonight was based on an encounter on the streets of San Francisco. A young man was walking down the street when this old VW Beetle came down the street. The car stopped and his girl friend got out and started bawling out the guy. “You should be looking for a job or at home helping me and not wandering the streets. Get in the car.” And as he was getting in the car she said ”And another thing, there will be no sugar tonight”.

Fun fact, to get discovered many of these old bands sent in their music on casettes to the music industry in the hopes of being chosen. However hundreds of tapes could be sent in. So with the hopes of standing out they wrote Guess Who on it. When the record executives seen it of course they had no idea who it was and felt they had to play it to see if they recognized who was playing. Hence their name, the Guess Who.

    A big FYI.....From the Professor of Rock;
Two of rock and roll’s greatest storytellers Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings formerly of the 70s band the Guess Who share the hilarious story of writing a #1 double sided hit… American Woman and No Sugar tonight. The two hits came from different experiences … One came when the Randy Bachman, who was not from the United States visited Haight Ashbury for the 1st time… He witnessed a tough guy get cut down to size by his lady… She cussed him out in front of onlookers and said a phrase that this guitarist had never heard but he turned it into a #1 hit. The other song came to the band on the spot when they were playing a show. Randy Bachman was vamping on a something and Burton Cummings spit out random lyrics and luckily a bootlegger was recording it because it became massive.
One of the biggest double a-side number one hits Ever… No Sugar Tonight and American Woman. First of all no Sugar Tonight is a medley…It’s actually No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature and was the B- Side of the American Woman Single without the New Mother Nature section….but then the single was officially relapsed as American Woman SLASH Non Sugar Tonight and peaked at #1 in both America and Canada for 3 weeks. So technically both were #1 hits… Just like the Beatles used to do. It’s a lost art….
Well No Sugar Tonight came from a hilarious incident that Randy Bachman witnessed when a tough guy got absolutely cussed out by his girlfriend in front of a bunch of onlookers. Randy heard her rant and it was so good he quickly turned it into a number one hit. Then American Woman came to the band when they were playing a live show.
Randy Bachman was just messing around with a riff between songs and Burton jumped on stage and started rapping nonsense words… They knew it was going to be huge from the audience’s reaction but after the show they had forgotten parts of it. Luckily a young kid who was illegally bootlegging the show recorded it. They tracked him down and did this classic hit. & why Singer Burton Cumming was pissed off at a change that was made on the double sided #1 hit. Also not to add insult to injury but The Guess Who is another great band that has been shut out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (BOO~! BOO~! R&RHoF~!)

I don't know if someone has pointed this out; but, I read once that the Guess Who were inspired to join No Sugar Tonight with New Mother Nature by the Beatles with their tune "A Day in the Life"
Also I once heard Randy Bachman talk about how No Sugar Tonight was composed and he said he was in Winnipeg standing on a street corner and some woman stopped her car, got out of it and started shouting to the man standing next to Randy.
She said something like: "Phil, what are you doing standing here like this. You didn't take out the garbage this morning when you left the house and you were supposed to go out looking for a job today, instead here you are just hanging around this street corner. There's no sugar for you tonight"
Randy thought this line was just hilarious and out of it came the song "No Sugar Tonight"
Heard this take on the Professor of Rock channel.

As a proud Canadian, I must of seen then in concert 4-5 times and they were great ! Burton Cummings, lead vocal/ pianist, solo for many years now, gives a fantastic performance. Last time I saw him, he literally did not take a break and rocked out for 2.5 hours. His bandmates took breaks but he did.not.stop for a minute. He's written sooooooo many beautiful songs. Stand Tall, Break it to them Gently, I'm Scared and countless others but " la pièce de résistance " is Share the Land. The lyrics are AMAZING with a great message! 👏👍

A bag of goodies and a bottle of wine, we're gonna be getting right tonight. Watched them play twice. Spectacular shows. Great band. Old hippies like me like this tune .

When I was in high school I went to see Three Dog Night at the Coliseum in Indy. The same night at Pleasant Run Park there was a free concert with a band no one had heard of - this one
    !

My first rock concert was the Guess Who in spring 1971, the original members for that era, at Michigan State University, East Lansing MI, next door to Lansing, my home town....I was 15. Indoors in an the athletic building...never saw so many joints lit up in one place and no cops arresting anyone, lol. this is some kind of reunion concert much later. This song has been also talked about as sugar begin a drug reference...The Guess Who was Canada's Beatles and we here in the USA loved them!

Check out "These Eyes", "American Woman", and "Undun" as well as the studio version of this track. This looks to be from their 1982 reunion tour. The song itself is from the late 60s/early 70s.

When I was 12, The Guess Who came to my neighborhood in Maryland and played - a block party! I still can’t believe it! It was right after “American Woman” had charted. Just crazy. Apparently, somebody in my neighborhood was friends with Randy Bachman, and we were between cities they were playing.
