    Julie, you’ve somewhat touched on what I would like to see. I would like to see you take more examples of design mistake rooms and show us how you would fix them-from the most minor changes that cost little or no money to more in depth changes requiring some money investment. I would like to actually see how the room is transformed with each change.

      It seems like it would be easy to decorate a fabulous room with high ceilings, massive windows, a spectacular fireplace, and beautiful wood floors. ...I'd like to see how to decorate a small windowless room with no architectural interest. (my sad little home office)

    Filler furniture! That’s what it’s called! I have so many of these pieces. For me they are the little tv carts with the broken wheels. 🤣 I somehow collected a few of these. I think various roommates or family members left them over the years and they ended up with us.

    Thank you for these tips. I'm furnishing a space from scratch and have found myself with a couple of 'issues'. While watching this I realised the sofa arrangement I had initially envisioned for this space would not form a functional seating group, so I'm going to orient the seats a few different ways to make a conversation area. I don't have to run myself ragged trying to find a gold sink + faucet to match golden drawer pulls, or give up a beloved old console because I can't find a coffee table / end tables to match its mixed wood finish, or have grey walls and curtains to match a set of grey sofas I was gifted. Unfortunately I can't do much about said set of sofas (couch + love seat + armchairs, all 1 colour and style, that seats 7 😮 ). Now I just need to figure out how to squeeze a dining table in here 😂

    Hi Julie
    As a seasoned homeowner I have acquired pieces that I did not expect. And yes I consider them filler furniture. But as I am resourceful soul I found ways to upgrade the pieces to eliminate the dated look. And now I like the way I did them and don’t want to give them away. And I use them. But I see that there will be no need for them and at that point I will give them away. I do not have any emotional connection to them. This makes it easy. I appreciate the short form today! Lots of info in a little bit of time. It would be great if you would do this for each room in the house. 🥰🥰🥰Margaret

    On point on every aspect!
    Dysfunctional spaces, all matchy-matchy, cluttered spaces are without a doubt an eye sore.
    Copy and Paste designs are an eye-sore as well.
    Our home should showcase our personality and unless you are by yourself there is no excuse for all to be white or beige or a combination of both.
    It doesn't need to be expensive, you don't need to buy everything at once, you don't need to buy everything every time a designer drops a new collection.
    Love your videos!

    Best part about this video is the suggestions are low cost or free. It’s free to rearrange your existing art or get rid of excess stuff. Buying a bag of hardware is not a renovation. It’s cheap to spray paint them an appropriate color. You didn’t suggest that, but I remember that tip from somewhere. Thought I would share.

    An excellent video, thank you! I'd love to see a video on the basics...where to start. When you buy a home you are starting with the bare bones and like you said "does this suit my style?" > if not you need to change things or nothing will ever look coordinated. Assuming the home "meets our style", I'd love to see where to start. Furniture layout (using what you have) , picking the right room for the job, once furniture is laid out then what ? Rugs then walls? Neither? Painting ...first ? Window treatments...early or last touch? Thanks so much!

    The biggest design mistake for me was moving too many times. As I acquired furniture and decor that was perfect for one space, I would end up moving to a new space where it no longer worked as well. It looks OK - but not great.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, that’s the conundrum. No one wants to buy all brand new pieces for a new space, the trick is buying what you LOVE. You will make it work and sell off/ donate the ho-hum pieces

  • @lydiadizon5549
    @lydiadizon5549 4 місяці тому +2

    My biggest offense before was the artwork. I used to buy artwork pieces that catches my eye but doesn't necessarily go well with my other pieces. I was also guilty of furniture filler. When we moved to a smaller house I had to donate tons of decorative pieces and furniture. Looking back it really was a waste of a lot of money...and lesson learned.

    • @nonawolf7495
      @nonawolf7495 4 місяці тому +1

      @lydiadizon5549 Yep - been there! After learning my lesson the hard way, I now use photoshop to see what a new piece would look like in my room. It's a great way to see if the new art or furniture will work with your existing scheme. (there are free versions online - no need to buy software)

    so what would you do to a livingroom that has monochromatic brown tones you see in old bars but want to balance that without greens blues, whites and purples unless they're plants (natural) while keeping it semi low sensory and not as if it's from an Ikea magazine? I don't mind using metal tones.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 місяці тому +1

      I love warm brass and matte black metal against warm woods. Add in a small colorful art piece and pull the colors from the art as accents. Find a print that you love, but with enough contrast to shake things up a bit. Doesn’t have to be huge, even a 16x20 would do on a small wall 👍🏻

It looked great in the huge store but is overwhelming in my living room. I call it the monolith and I hate it. I may try to sell it. It won't work in any other room. Do you have any suggestions? I tried a bright green throw which helps a little. Thank you. Love your videos.

    I get caught up in permanent design that I can't change easily.
    My sofa pillow covers have subtle black stripes to go with the bronze items and oaks, greige but nothing else.

    My lounge is impossible to arrange with windows, French doors, walk ways on 2 sides, doorways, and the wood heater (and space for wood boxes). The TV has to cover part or all of a window or the doors or be put in a walkway with some electrical work. If it was put on that wall, the sofa would have to go in front of the fire or the sofas would be on an awful angle to the TV. I don’t need a conversation arrangement (but might have to trade in the extra 2 seater for a chair so there’s potential for a someone else) and always have the TV on for company so I like the couch to face it. It’s not a large area but would love a video on arranging a lounge room without it being a media room or have the sofas perpendicular to the TV. The walkways are orange timber and the lounge room is designated by old pink carpet so I can’t trick the eye until they are replaced. I’ve painted the walls white which has united what was the lower half in orange TnG with old cream on top. Love all the tips. My ex took all but one piece of the matching old wood furniture and the four recliners and I laughed so I could really decorate with new knowledge. I painted that piece and it’s much better now.

      Haha now ex has to figure out what to do with all the matchy matchy furniture! 😂 Most of the time people get stuck with design because of filler furniture. You’re trying to make it work, but it can’t. It’s not scaled properly for the space so you end up using it anyways bc budget is limited. Use this time to “design” the best solution and source secondhand for the perfect fit. Might take a minute, but at least you’re one step closer to a beautiful and functional space🙏🏻✨

      @@JulieKhuu Thanks Julie, I’m sure I’m not the only one in these situations. The only way to fix it is with knocking down all sorts of walls. Knowing that there’s no perfect solution to the layout gives me options to continually rearrange as long as I keep the internal doors and walkways clear. Ex doesn’t have a design cell in his body so that makes me laugh harder!

    ....13 minutes after you've Posted this ! ...I'm here commenting !
    Will update after I watch... 😊
    This is so needed, Miss Julie... especially with the" Trends " that are often short lived and may well " bring down " the overall Vibe and Feel of ones living space . I am n o t a " Sectional type girl , lol.. I don't like them ...it limits Furniture Arrangements, and Lord knows, I'm rearranging my Rooms at least 3 times a year ! 😉😁..lol. I believe a Sofa , and two chairs of some type,will offer seating, and one could include an Ottoman ( or two) depending on thier size. I adore Wing Back Chairs, and Classic looks , that have something " unique " about them. ...whether it's a painted finish, design, or colour . And I am SO particular about Artwork, that I don't have a lot, ...but what I have is Artwork that says sonething about my Personal Style, and, as you stated... tells about part of " who you are ".
    I think more of these types of Videos, with maybe showing an After shot of " what's taken away, what's been replaced " ( the Magic of editing/ etc ,lol,)
    will give another Dinension to " what works, and w h y things work" to elevate ones Surroundings. 🙂😊
    So well done, Miss Julie! 👏🏻💟

      Random art:
      1. No sentimental/ artistic value
      2. Putting up big box store artwork just to fill up a “blank wall”
      3. Not considering the vignette in front of it: seating group/ console/ accent furniture.

I did this often when I hosted parties regularly - bought whatever suited my theme, then donated it back to the thrift store.

      Im a landlord of a single family home in Southern California . I allow "common sense" updates. Tenants
      can hang pictures, curtain rods , simple shelves. I freshen up btwn renters with neutral paint and steam clean flooring and carpet.
      I did charge a renter to repair drywall after they hung flat screen TV on a wall we did not approve. I promptly address repairs. I expect my tenants to respect and care for the home as if they own it , and i have had no issues.
