Sato dismembering himself, cooking those parts into fried chicken, having his lackey pretend to be a ubereats guy to deliver said chicken into a secure location, and then throwing himself into a woodchipper to regenerate from the fried chicken
I can barely remember how ajin ends, but i remember that sequence vividly. Sato is a villain written like someone who is reading a manga and thinking up all the ways HE would beat the antagonist because the main character/mangaka refuses to fully embrace the magic system in their own series.

      Emperor Shaddam? From Dune?
He isn‘t the main antagonist in any of the books. Honestly it is hard to call him an antagonist at all when he is mainly present as a mediator between Paul and the Harkonnens. For that matter Dune is imo really low on strong villains/antagonists. We start with pretty boring typically evil villains, then there is Paul suffering from his success with the biggest opposing forces being his own church, jihad, etc. God Emperor is similar and in the last two books wie are back to very black and white evil Honored Matres. I love Dune, but it isn‘t for the antagonists.
Obviously enjoy what you want, I am not trying to tell you what to enjoy or how - I am just surprised to see him on the list.

      @RePorpoised 9 місяців тому +58

@@the9970 Because the difficulty with any power or ability is that it is difficult to maintain tension if the ability is always used in the same way or for similar purposes. The common writing shortcut is therefore to add more abilities, because you can make situations more complex and surprise the reader. But that often end up introducing powerscaling issues.
However, it is far more difficult to have the same ability be used throughout yet introduce new uses, because it means that if you can no longer come up with a new trick or a new presentation, the work is dead in the water. Hence, being able to keep the same (remarkably simple!) system running through and entire manga without boring the readers is indeed good writing.
A side note, consistency is always impressive and having too many secondary abilities detracts from a lot of the seriousness of the work.
The scream. per instance, was clearly an earlier decision, but made escape pitifully easy and removed much of the semblance of reality, as that makes the Ajin too well rounded for escape and survival. By sticking with only two main inhuman factors(revival and the ghost), you ground the Ajin far better into reality. The better grounded the Ajin, the more the reader feels immersed in the manga, inherently making the manga "better",

Sato isn’t just good on his own, but he accentuates the themes and story of ajin. The whole point is to question what humanity really is, and having Sato be an insane, cold-blooded killer even before he was an ajin helps put that into perspective. Also, the whole “gaming” thing with him is great and gives a similar feeling to anton chigurh in “no country for old men”, who feels similarly disconnected from reality. It’s funny because in order to stop sato, they send all these different military units that get increasingly less and less humane, to the point where the anti-ajin defense force are basically just faceless, nameless soldiers. Also, out of all the times they try to use actual weaponry to take out Sato, it’s only really effective when Kei uses the gun to shoot himself instead, not only to cure his memory loss but as a final sign of acceptance that he has become ajin; inhuman. Then when he later takes out Sato, it’s not with any insane weaponry or strategy, but something that would take out any random human. Love it so much.

On one end, I can see how it feels like the story basically wrote sato to actually be unstoppable, but that just makes his defeat stand out even more. It’s as if to say that, no matter how distanced he became from his humanity, he is still human in the end. Bring up No country for Old Men again, it’s like when Anton Chigurrh gets hit with the car at the end.

God, this manga lives in my head rent-free.
Even though Sato was one of the characters that kept me hooked on the story the whole time, I have to admit that I think Kei is the one that intrigued me the most. To be more specific, I enjoyed how much he contrasted against Sato while also being similar to him.
On one hand, they're both very smart people who find ways to use their ajin abilities in ways that normal humans wouldn't even think about. Even other ajin don't think about using their abilities the same way Sato and Kei do. And I think that's because both of them have embraced their inhumanity. Other ajins are still holding onto their past human lives and how they used to live, but both Sato and Kei have both accepted and adapted to the fact that they can no longer live as a person.
Similarly, they're both rather cold people. Sure, Sato is a lot more emotional than Kei; he freely shows his joy and excitement-- but they both go about achieving their goals in a rather rational matter-- and more importantly, they don't really sympathize or empathize with others. We see this more clearly with Kei and how he basically treats people as pawns in his plans, but Sato does the same thing. He doesn't start an ajin revolution because he really wants ajin rights and freedoms; he does it because he wants to have fun. Even Kei doesn't really want ajin rights for others, but rather because it will allow him to live peacefully. They're both rather fundamentally selfish people.
I think that similarity is also picked up by Sato-- because he does have this moment where he says he wants to cut off Kei's head and essentially kill Kei, because then Kei can fully step onto Sato's level and make a better "rival". I also don't think it's a coincidence that it was Kei and Sato who had the shared memories moment, essentially tying them together as opposing forces.
However, the core difference between them lies in compassion-- or as Sato's father puts it, understanding life is a precious thing. I think Kei understands better than Sato that he can't live alone in society. In fact, there are many points in Kei's journey that he is helped by other people; I also think it's telling that to stop Sato, Kei teams up with the anti-ajin squad while Sato essentially does his acts of terrorism largely by himself.
I think that last confrontation with Kei and Sato sums it up pretty well, when Kei says he has never treated life as a game. He understands that when other people-- non-ajins-- die, they die. Sato never really saw it as a bad thing, because he never cared about them; to him, life is a game and the people he kills are just "NPCs". Kei treats life seriously, with the gravity it deserves. Sato treats it frivolously, which is why he can commit such brutal violence on both others and himself.
I think you said that Kei is a "mid protagonist" and I think that's the point. Sato is very bombastic and hedonistic; he wants to have fun and he wants to have fun *extremely*; once he's set his mind, he's 100% in.
Kei has multiple moments where he just wants to stop fighting and just live under the radar, but he's continually brought back into the plot. He's a very passive/reactive protagonist in this way. Sato's pushing the plot forward, creating conflict, and Kei is mostly reacting to that. I don't think he actually takes a proactive approach to stopping Sato until near the end.
But I also think it's probably reductive to say that Kei doesn't care for others. He does care about the people close to him; there are even moments in the manga that show that even though he seems "cold", he does care about people. For example, even though his own sister doubts his reason for becoming a doctor, his mother does confirm that Kei wants to become a doctor to cure his sister. He is a just a rather rational person, and rationality spreads even into his own emotions. He cares about the people close to him, but (like his mother says) caring about them in thought isn't enough to make them better/help them, so he has to take the optimal path. The part where he says something along the lines of "everyone weighs other people's worths in their mind; don't blame me because I do it consciously" I think sums it up perfectly. It's also that line that I remember the most clearly out of everything in the manga. I think compared to other shounen protagonists, Kei stands out because he's way more aware of how he's driven by a very personal "power of friendship" than an abstract desire to do good. He can write off the millions of people dying due to Sato's terrorism, but keeps letting himself get dragged back into the fight because in the end, he does care about himself and his friends.
But he also has his moments of bordering the irrational. Like that moment when he continues to stop Sato even though the situation looks hopeless because a non-zero percent chance of success still means there's a chance of success. It's a very emotionally driven sentiment, but still framed by rationality. I don't know, but Kei's relationship with compassion/idealism and realism compels me in a different way than Sato's enthusiastic swan dive into selfish hedonistic pursuit of a high score.
I'd apologize for the long ramble, but I really do like the manga.

Sato himself isn't a complicated villain. He is a bored dude who wants to create chaos for the thrill of it.
His main draw is how he uses his cheat code of infinite lives. He mentions that ajin resurrect from their larges piece but it still catches you by surprise when he actually uses it to infiltrate a secure building. While I didn't cheer for him, I felt like an audience member waiting in anticipation for the magician's next trick. And Sato is an excellent magician, he is the reason I started reading Ajin. I got spoiled a bit and saw how he cut his hand off. He is definitely one of my favorite villains.
I truly liked how all the rules were laid down and they were never bent or changed for the protag to win.

I mean, all a villain needs to be a solid character is a decent motivation. You can get great morally grey villains motivated by self-righteousness, or you can get pure evil villains motivated by hedonism like Sato, and so long as that motivation is clear and consistent the villains are great either way. The problem with a lot of villains nowadays isn’t them being more morally grey, because let’s be real, grey villains do still have so much more character potential, but the fact that a lot of people do it pretty badly these days

  • @masterzoroark6664

Getting borred of a "Big plan" like the one Sato pulled out is such an Immortal Person thing- when you live endless life you have practically endless attempts to idk fuck up a country beyond a recognition almost all on yout own, but for someone with infinite tries like that it's quite frankly like indeed finishing a game, and the closer to finish you are the less fun it is.
Yeah, they brought in anti-immortal SWAT team, but it's just a "final boss" elite that is pretty much done once you kill the boss
    Addendum:
Sato is on the similar level of mindset to Outsider from Dishonored and Happy Chaos from Guilty Gear- if I am about to live the life as long as it takes the universe to die of entropy I might as well make it interesting. Yeah, they have different angles: Outsider "knows the story already", Chaos is the almost literall embodiment of his namesake, but the goal is still quite the same- make this shit interesting to at least watch.

Satou really is a fantastic villain, and the story is so genius because it's a perfect representation of what an open world video game like say, the post-storyline part of GTA V would look like from the viewpoint of the NPCs just helplessly looking on at a gamer doing gamer shit all over the place. Killing everything just because he can, causing all manner of chaos with no concern about consequences, only caring about having fun, and then quitting when he gets bored. He's both the player and the player character, and that's brilliant. Executed perfectly.

Personally I've only watched the anime and I still love this series. I also love how each of the IBM's seem to line up with each charecters wants and desires. (I'm not 100% sure if this is true but I love it all the same) another thing I liked the main character after he joins the counter ajin force cause he goes from an ass to what I can only describe as disconnected. He only has one which and that's to be normal if it wasn't for this whole event he would have probably just become a doctor cause that's what a "good human" does. I also love the action as it feel like fast pace chess as each side tries to counter the other and honestly I wish they had gone farther with stuff like sleep gas. I also like the ending (which seems different from the manga) where Sato had basically won the Ajin got there own country. This was a time for his men to celebrate freedom. For him? It was just the end of the game he had won time to decline, Gas the population, and skip to America and play his sick game again. It shows his lack of care and how disconnected he is with reality and I love it.

The biggest thing I love about ajin and other shows for that is that ajin isn’t simply just the action with a badass antagonist. There is a purpose behind the action and the antagonist, aside from just being cool. Most shonen have action for the sake of coolness, simply using it as a means to tell the events of the story. With ajin, the themes and story are baked into the action, the action is making a statement about what is trying to be conveyed through incredibly rich subtext.

Overall i kinda disagree with the "perfect villian" title. I definetely like what he did and how it was shown, this overcompetent kind of character that's just always one step ahead in plans and actions and it definetely fits the story well, you love to see guys like that just going ham.
Also really like his design and background, too many manga would put that level of experience and skill on some gifted highschooler and call it a day, this was a lot more fitting.
Can't say i enjoyed his character that much though sicne it basically came down to an evil guy who was born evil and had fun doing evil things without any change or even that much of interactions with other characters.
Basically the guy is just a force of nature in the story, not a bad concept and it works really well in this story, like really well but personally i wouldn't count him as a favourite character when i know that i mostly like him for the cool action scenes he was put into rather than for the character he was written as, of course that's just my take

The thing about Kei Nagai is that he does feel emotions and does care for people, he only idealises this emotionless selfish mentality because caring about others brings him strife. He keeps saying how he's selfish and how he should be selfish, words of self confirmation in order to reassure himself of who he is-when the reality is far different. His actions show that he does care about people, so he feels the need to reject that notion and make up selfish reasons that could have brought him to where he is in order to avoid facing the truth. Nagai had plenty of chances to just escape and ignore Satou, but he eventually felt a need to stop him-yet the emotionally constipated kid that he is still wants to put up the persona of being selfish, stating that he can't live a normal life if Satou is alive-which is true but only because Nagai does actually care about people and not because Satou is hell bent on fucking with Nagai as Satou states it himself "Why do YOU keep getting in my way?" Meaning that Satou wasn't really going after Nagai at all.
Honestly this manga is fucking beautiful.

I'm one of those people that loved the anime when it came out. Sure the CG was jarring at first. But the plot kept me watching. And as the show progressed the animations got better. And the use of shadows actually made it look amazing at times.
So when I heard a season 3 is finally on its way I got super hype.
Sato is also indeed an amazing villain. Fucking loved big ass fight scene with him

HOLY SHIT I LOVE THAT THOUGHT EXPERIMENT! If you’re able to fully regenerate your brain that still isn’t you anymore because the you that existed when your brain was gone literally disappeared. The thought experiment if a fun way to consider if we have souls or not because if we do than it would mean that you is still there but if we don’t it means that you is gone for good. It’s a fun thought experiment to talk about with people.

Often times some arent that terrible, unless the people harm someone they cared for and fuck up extra terribly causing them to no longer give anysort of fuck towards anyone at that point

Honestly i dont really like stories where loads of people die horribly, however, Sato is so fucking enjoyable i honestly could not put Ajin down. Seeing him referencing the a team after i thought he reminded me of hannibal a bit (but a crazy version), being an absolute monster and just enjoying that, i could not help but like this horrible motherfucker. I like that he just got bored.
