We played together for the first time when we were 10 or 11 years old... I played saxophone... Another one of Gods great talents has gone before us. Much Love Brother!
I was shocked when I heard he passed. This was the first Newport Jazz Festival for my wife and me, after years of wanting to go. That's me in photographer's row, with a camera slung over each shoulder. I got some great shots of this performance. Those photos mean even more to me now. Thank you, Roy Hargrove. Rest easy, brother.
Roy Hargrove tr, Bruce Williams as, Larry Willis p, Gerald Cannon b, Willie Jones III d recorded Aug. 11, 2001 - R.I.P. Roy (Oct 16, 1969 - Nov 2, 2018) and Larry (Dec 20, 1942 - Sep 29, 2019).
A universal rhythm able to be slotted and sampled by all. To good effect here by master craftsman Roy and the boys. Great soulful playing by Justin. Grover approves.
Bassman quoting Boogie On Reggae Woman by Stevie Wonder at 735 wow then If You Want Me To Stay at 715 then Skin tight afterwards. That's funk I was weaned on.
To all fans out there, my favorite 2 songs "Once Forgotten & A Dream of You" truly capture the soul of his playing for me,. Would like to hear others state their fav Hargroves' .
how yall not gonna name the band in the description! These videos are historical artifacts and ought to be treated as such. Regardless, thanks for posting!
Mr Magic a moniker you shared with Grover Washington down here. Should be some show when you meet again up there. Taken from us like a thief in the night but you left behind much gold.
Yes and I was sooooo mad when the melody for mister magic didn't come in because I thought I was crazy and forgot the song's melody lol. I'm loving the quoting of Mister magic in the solos, though.
One month before 9-11, the world was about to change. "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,"--that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. (John Keats)
The alto saxophonist looks like Bruce Williams. I am not as yet quite familiar with his sound or style. Could it have been he? If it were he, then I would have first heard him with trumpeter Russell Gunn and drummer Cecil Brooks 111 in 2000 - on CD record. Oh, yes! It's he. Roy has Just shouted the names of the players - the performance having come to an end during my commentary. On "Altoicity", Bruce does some beautiful playing, his CD. I especially like "You Are So Beautiful" and "Sophisticated Lady". Bruce Williams gives a rendition in style and sound similar to that of Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, Miguel Zenon, and Myron Walden. The rhythmic pulse is kind of 'different' from that which is the 'norm' in "Organic Real Jazz ". Thanks for posting!
Isn't Sherman Irby an alto saxophonist whose style is rooted in the "Organic Real Jazz" milieu? He can performance well. I may have seen him in one of Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Centre Groups. Sherman is maybe a little stouter than altoist Bruce Williams who is herein pictured in the video with Roy Hartgrove. Both altoists are lettered in the rudiments, theory and practicality of true "Organic Real Jazz" - not to be confused with the misnomer "Smooth Jazz". The song poses the question thus:- "Mr.Magic, where have you gone?"
