    Getting out and shooting with my Linhof Master Technika at frozen waterfalls. Large format film photography can be both amazing and intimidating at the same time. The key to becoming a better photographer is to take pictures!
    In this video I am slightly ashamed that to have this beautiful camera and have not used it much. I am determined to start shooting with the Linhof Master Technika more. Large format film is such a joy to print from in the darkroom!

    40 years ago, when I first took an interest in photography, an older colleague told me about Linhof Technika and the marvellous images taken by this 4x5. This is the first time I've seen this camera in action, and it is a shame because my film days are long behind me. Still, better late than never! Would love to see a video on architectural photography using this camera.

    Been there and done it. My wife just gave me grief for buying another Canon T90 (My third). You are right about selling film cameras verses digital disposal. I have never missed a digital after selling it but film is a different story.
    The 'waterfall' looked very interesting and look forward to perhaps seeing some more images from the shoot. The graffiti area looked pretty interesting too.

      It is crazy right. digital cameras not only do not hold there value but they just do not have the look and feel of a solid film camera. I never had a T90 but have a A1 that I really enjoy using. It is a really neat are and plan on going back. Thanks for watching!

    Nice! Pretty images, neat location. I sold my first large format, Crown Graphic, to subsidize my Wista 45DX. The Wista is lighter and more functional, but I regret selling the Crown. Especially miss using the Graflex 6-film press holder, which does not sit light tight on the Wista.

    I really lusted for one of these Linholfs at a time long ago when I could not afford it. I went through my view camera phase and moved on out of convenience, but I too still have the view kit. If a Linholf is beyond your reach, take a look at the last model Graflex, the Super Graphic. It too is a field 4x5, all metal construction, made for Graflex by Toyo to a much higher level of quality than the US models.

    I totally agree, over different periods of time when I sold parts of my film camera equipment, the regret I felt is not comparable to dumping digital equipment. You think, "ah, I'll never use it again" and a few months down the road I'm wishing I still had it. Never again. I purchased an 8x10 Intrepid and the lens I ordered finally came so I'm anxious to step out and use that over the next few days while the weather is unseasonably warm. After watching your video on creating sepia toner from raw chemicals, I'm looking at making D-76 for my sheet film. Have you ever tried making your own developer? If so, it might be interesting to do a video on it.

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  3 роки тому

      So true. I have so many film cameras that were just given to me over the years that I value just as much if not more than my best digital cameras... Hope you get to get out and use the Intrepid soon! Ah maybe an 8x10 will be next for me... would love to hold an 8x10 neg!
      I do mix my own dev and will see about making a vid! Thanks for watching.

It happens that a good friend of mine just gave me a Linhof Master Technika, an old beast that I want to use for a series of projects. I'm here to ask if you can tell me/us how do you develop films? I have to choose a system and I'm asking around to see what other photographers do. Thanks! Bye from Italy

      Thank you! Congrats on the Linhoff. Wonderful camera. In the past I always tray developed my sheet film and had great results…. It did quite bother my neck and shoulders ( arthritis from a fracture in my neck). So I have been using a Jobo with expert tank. I quite like the results and the consistency is excellent. For dilute and reduced development I still use trays and plan on building a “sloshed tray at some point. Hope that helps!

    great video, one tip, the reason the shutter spring broke, I think, is the spring must be stored "loose" aka with the shutter fired, not cocked!!- saves wear on it; also if it was an old copal shutter, the spring may have hit its service life (fatigue, from so many actuations).

      @@DistinctionPhotoLLC yes, and as I am aware the Linhof branded lens/shutters are a bit more delicate (size, etc.) than most, so pays to be extra careful.

    for white snow/ice like this how do you expose?
    for digital it seems to always tell to over expose but is it the same for film?

    • @culley03
      @culley03 3 роки тому +1

      I was curious about how you were metering as well. I've had good luck with adding almost two full stops when shooting b&w film in the snow, but I tend to like high key images during daylight hours in the winter. Especially since we commonly have overcast winter days here in Wisconsin. Can get some really soft looking images that way. Find it's trickier with color film, easier to have whatever bright colors there are to be ducked in shadow a bit.
      And, use that camera more! It's too pretty to leave on the shelf.

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  3 роки тому +1

      Overexposing film is actually much safer than digital in general. It will get grainier the more overexposed the film is.
      For these I used a spot meter and placed the shadow detail where I wanted it. The highlight details were falling a tad short of where I wanted them as it was overcast. So I gave the film more development to bring the highlights up more and give the negatives more contrast.
      I probably would have gotten a really close exposure by taking an average and giving about 2 stops more exposure and then still given a little more development. ( an average meter reading would put the white snow ( predominant in the scene) at an average grey. so two stops brighter (more exposure would get you in the ball park)
      Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  3 роки тому +1

      @Culley Smith Exactly! I tend to still meter for the shadows...(if there are any on full snow scenes) and here in Wisconsin give more development to bring the snow highlights where I want it.
      If it is sunny it is a whole different beast. and give more exposure and less development and or compensating type development.
      Just started shooting more color film but do not have a ton of experience in that regard. I intend to shoot the camera! now just waiting to get my shutter fixed on my 90mm for some images I want to make.... Thanks!

      No, the one I have was one of the Zone VI modified meters. Does your leather case say Zone VI on it?
      This was Fred Pickers company and they modified a bunch of Pentax meters and apparently they are more in line with black and white film characteristics I think based on Tri-x curve but could be wrong on that. Readings very accurate with all my other meters 👍 Also has a zone scale on it that I could not live without

    Why is someone always saying "You can have all the cameras and all the gear in the world. If you're not going out and use it then they're not doing you any good." How many cars do you think Jay Leno can drive at any time? If I want to purchase a camera and have it sit in the corner that's my choice. If I want to purchase a large format camera, repair it and just keep it, what's the problem? The cameras I purchase and repair are mine to do what I feel like and they make me feel just fine having them around, even if I never put a sheet of film in them. The 1939 Speed Graphic I just repaired and overhauled makes me feel great. I just saved it from the dumpster. The 1950's Sinar Norma with the knobs and pieces missing, now a repaired and a complete working camera makes me feel great. Who cares if I use them or not? Sure I feel great when I use them, but they're not going to waste, they're doing me good just sitting there.

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  3 роки тому

      I agree. This particular camera was always a dream camera of mine to shoot with. so hurts a little more to not use it that's all. It is currently the only 4x5 camera I own and I LOVE printing from 4x5 negatives. So I guess that was a bit to broad of a statement because I too buy a lot of cameras that are just collectors but never really get used...
      The Linhoff however is one that I feel a tad guilty about not using as much as I can. that's all. (now it is in repair so.... hopefully soon.
      I guess the point was more that you can. not print from a negative you never make :)
