  • I picked up this scope and it wouldn't even display a trace. Here's how we got it to do it's job again.

    Nice video Arti! For a minute there I thought WALL-E's evil twin was trying to disguise himself as a railroad crossing... Nice score on the scope. Cheers!

    QUOTE: "That repair is well beyond the scope of this video"? Thank You folks, I'm here all week. I didn't know the video included 'stand up'. Nice addition. On the flip side.. I really did like the scale train crossing light(s). Little secret, I love MINIATURES! Why? Because they are so small, of course. True story. Idea: The warning lights should start flashing when your home's internet connectivity is interrupted... Just like with a train, you have to stop and wait till the lights go out. Ok, not my best idea. Anyways, COoL little scope & construction. And yes, a unknown, tainted system can be $!@%$ to troubleshoot. You would just have to assume every component is suspect :O\ But excellent progress. 25 points awarded. Cheers.

      All we need is a low frequency square wave generator and a couple of triacs to make the lamps alternate. I'll leave the implementation as an exercise for the student.

    Hi Artie - your videos always bring a smile to my face. Please keep them coming! :)

    Great video, thanks. Maybe the protoboard was intended as a dual-trace converter? There were lots of designs for these back in the day to enhance your low-cost 'scope.

    Bell & Howell once owned DeVry. That's where "Bell & Howell Schools" came from.

    The RR sign is very cool. Excellent night light!
    The scope does have some nice surprises inside...

    Heathkit IO-102, yes. I built one of these as a teenager and I still have it; (It does work) 👍🏻

    I just found your channel and subscribed. Great stuff!!! I do similar things on my channel as well. I retired from the Army 4 years ago after 27 years of service. I worked as an electronics/instrumentation technician. I currently do amplifier and audio gear repair, specializing in tube stuff. Always wanting to learn new tricks. Thanks!!!

    I don't have a Heath oscilloscope but I do have a related product which is a vectorscope designed for testing color TV circuitry with a built-in NTSC pattern generator. I'm thinking of making it into an X-Y display or maybe a curve tracer.

      I've look at the TEK vector scopes, but they seem to be heavily optimized for TV work.

    Thank you for the inspiring repair vid; is there going to be a part 2? (Apologies for being greedy for your knowledge) What effect the bad capacitors had on the trace and a quick calibration to show how it compares to a modern scope. I understand that it may not be worth investing more time on this particular scop due to its quirky assembly. Though, if you are going to convert the unit into a scope clock I guess further repair may be needed to ensure clear digits.
    I was hopeful that you were going to show the railroad crossing repair too, did you video any of the process?
    Thank you again for an inspiring, logical fault finding vid, with the added humor.

      I don't have a video of the crossing sign, the hardest part was screwing in the red bulbs. (Q: How many youtubers does it take to change a bulb? A: More than you would imagine)
      The biggest mystery remaining for the scope is the purpose of the proto board which I'll have to look into.

    I wonder if the added board and switches might be an Curve Tracer of some kind? Thanks for the video.

      I would guess that it it's some sort of function generator, further investigation required.

    The BAD Transistor and Bad Capacitor was causing what problems with the oscilloscope?

    • @artifactelectronics
      @artifactelectronics  2 роки тому

      The transistor was shorted pegging the intensity. The capacitor that was previously removed seemed to create uneven intensity in the horizontal direction, so I removed it again.

      @@artifactelectronics Which circuits under test or applications would the oscilloscope NOT Sync or NOT trigger to the oscilloscope ch#1 probing measurements on various test points in the circuit? I'm talking about various applications of circuits

    Nice one Artie. The name Bell and Howell holds a special place in our house. My Dad had a Bell and Howell 16mm film projector. A dumb question: Could the intensity pot itself be gone bad?

    • @jonka1
      @jonka1 2 роки тому

      I'm wondering if the pot could be changed for a different value to work with the replacement transistor.

    • @artifactelectronics
      @artifactelectronics  2 роки тому +1

      I've measured the pot for full range linearity, and except for the very extremes it's pretty accurate.

    • @artifactelectronics
      @artifactelectronics  2 роки тому +1

      Using a smaller value pot with offset resistors could be useful in making the combo work in a smaller window.

    Oh the horror --- I am so very sorry i egged you on after the last scope repair i never meant to kill off so many of your brain cells. i took one look at the wire wrap prototype board jammed where it never belonged and said scrap it now. If we can find the previous owner maybe we could see if his life after this ended in electrocution or in sales or marketing.

      Keep egging. I want to use repair tools that are more interesting than spray cans.
