USE YOUR SENSES, eyes, ears, touch, machine and your hand are together as one, the settings are in my hand not so much my machine. Adaptability is a must. It made my day to hear you basically say what I've lived by since 92. Thank you !

This was perfect and informative in the way I needed to hear it. Thank you so much. I struggle sometimes with that fear. I tell myself I can always go back rather then blowout but this helped my mindset of letting go of that fear and finding the right depth and not hesitating and pulling back on the pressure before finishing my line. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge

I love rotary will never go back to all those moving parts . Every two minutes trying to re tune a coil machine to find the "sweet spot". A rotary is so consistent . Easier to find the sweet spot. I still struggle with the fear of blowouts so my lines aren't coming out saturated enough. I like how you simplify everything 👏. Thank you for your time both of you sincerely. I own many machines as you can imagine. I own two magi's and I love them for shading and packing colour. As you explained with the organic give

I learned with coils and have used them for 16yrs. Made the switch over to rotary and today dig it. It was an adjustment for sure. And switching over has saved my wrist for sure. Doesn't feel like a brick in my hand anymore.

I personally removed the return spring on my v6 when using cartridges. I realize that if you count the return spring in the cartridge plus the return spring in the cam, causes resistance in the motor. Throwing off the rpm thus making it hard to line...

I’m still a begginer but I started with a rotary cause I could only afford one machine and it seemed like the best choice (it could shade/pack and maybe line if I got the hang of it) so I instinctively played around with the “xyz” and don’t think I’ll ever have to switch to a coil, even though I have one now. Great video, thanks for the info!!!

I'm really new to practical tattooing (though I've been learning theory for over 2 years), and I feel like what you're saying about letting the hand do the give -if I understand you right- is best described as responding to - and adjusting your hand pressure to - the haptic feedback you're getting in both your machine hand and your stretching hand when the needle hits the skin. Or in other words: the tattooing technique needs to take into account more than just how it looks. Sound can also play a role, but is probably the most difficult to pick up on consistently, so visual and tactile feedback are -in my opinion- the main points to focus on. Those remain consistent even if there's music playing, or someone else is working in the booth next to you.
And by the way, thanks a lot for making this video, it's been very informative - even just 28 minutes in! Now to watch the rest!

great video guys. I used to love bishop machines but I was pretty disappointed when my bishop rotary motor died after just 10 months of usage. never dropped the machine, never used it out of the recommended voltage.. that was pretty sad actually for a machine that cost me 400€. I get the feeling that the more established a brand gets the less they care about costumer service & highend production. I bought machines from private machine builders where every machine is unique & they work just fine as ever where some established ones broke down after a few months to a year...

This is great!! Thanks Franco!! One thing though... if one is a liner, another shader its still the same thing as having an adjustable machine. Just gotta buy another machine.. good one lol if this was the case just make one machine and master at getting ur hand pressure just right for each skin and style of tattoo. But ur right! Before all these helpful tools we gotta master our craft.

Was never able to line with a rotary. (Not bishop) I never felt like it went in like my coils. Ended up trying a sidewinder and it’s the best of both worlds. I feel like it punches ink in like any coil, but has the consistency of a rotary.
Again I haven’t tried bishop machines so no hate from me!

Hi, Franco, greetings from Mexico City!! I want to ask you about the fantom, I actually want one so badly, but the thing is they are out of stock, I really hope that you can put in stock asap, but my question is: the Fantom works for Linning too, I mean I need an all around machine, and if it's a Bishop I'm all set to be happy and get the job done every time. And for last I want to thank you your commitment and your support to the tattoo industry, I truly appreciate that and I'm really grateful for found Bishop machines, (here you have a truly fan of yours man, yeahhh) so... thank you, And hope to hear about you Sir. God Bless!!

I have one client on which I did a tattoo a while back, and everything turned out amazing. Solid line work, nice packing, smooth finish. Then we started on another project and for an unknown reason, the lines just wouldn't heal... I love doing tattoos with different line weight and have been for many years. This is the first time I have encountered this problem. I have only been lining with rotary for the last two years, tattooing with coil for the previous 6. But even in the last 2 were I was using the wands, no one ever had this issue. I really appreciate the xyz. It is something we all somewhat hear of, but not necessarily something that we understand, or get explained. Regarding my issue, I initially thought that maybe, out of nowhere, I went bunkers and heavy handed. But would that make sense?
The client was good enough to trust me further and come back. So I tattooed him again and the results were much better, but not as smooth as I like them to be.
The fact that I had no other incidents previous to this, or since, makes me wonder what the issue is. Could it be that it was the sharpy used for the freehand design? I only found one article mentioning that possibility accross the web... Maybe a barbed tip? A health condition my client is unaware of? Or was I super heavy handed that particular day?
Eitherway, I have been very attentive to everything I do since, and it makes me question over everything I do. So much so that I have been considering starting o er from the very basics up again. Althought this is one bad case out of a couple thousand good ones.
I will definitely be working the xyz, but what do you think might have cause this issue?
    Thanks for your time!

I set my V’s at 1.0 above where it start hitting. And on my first line. I do 3 speeds in that line. I start slow for about quarter inch, than I hit second gear, than 3rd gear. And than I go back a look at that 3/4 of a inch of line. And I’ll see which gear/speed laid the best. And than I’ll go that speed the rest of the tatt. That way I find my speed I need for that person within 3/4 of an inch of the first line

Hey I have all 3 machines. And all works extremely well. My question is that from my understanding the packer and liner have the same motor. Only difference is the cam. But I can feel a strong difference in regards 2 what feels like "give" the packer feels soft but powerful and the liner is very hard and powerful. Is it jus the cam or is there some "give" difference. BTW not complaining as I luv all 3.???

  • @standard1664

I think the guy asking about the slowing of the needle during the cam rotation is referring to the bottom part of the needle stroke (and the top) as the needle slows to change direction. If you picture the rotational motion, and focus on the up /down velocity vector of the needle, the max up/down velocity would be midway through the stroke. Past that midway point, the up/down vector begins to slow down until velocity reaches zero (bottom of stroke), and then direction changes and the upward velocity begins to grow again. So based on that, the position of the needle would look like a mathematical sin wave over time, suggesting that the up /down motion of the needle builds up speed through the stroke and then slows to change direction.
If this understanding of the mechanics is correct, I'm also curious as to what considerations can be made in understanding different strokes and how this impacts the skin (no pun intended). My guess is that the longer strokes can build up higher needle speed, and a heavier hand can make sure the needle hits more mid stroke when velocity is peaked - all of this being able to push big groups and penetrate the skin easily. And I think that the slower velocity phase of different stroke lengths would be barely noticeable, so as long as the hand is light, any stroke length can do soft shading similarly. So... Longer stroke better for all rounder?

As far as I’m concerned pressure should never really be a factor if your machine hits hard enough it should do its job. As soon as I ever pressed harder because my rotary is shit (xion pen) the lines are just not great or their skin gets raised from jamming their skin. The problem with slowing the hand speed is everyone who tattoos their wrist are fricked and I just think taking longer is not good for my hands.
