    It's Thursday, 11:50 in the evening. I'm just scrolling through YT searching for a review of another Orient Star. By coincidence I found this video.
    And now guess what I did while watching: I jumped off the sofa, put my Orient Star Classic on my wrist and now I'm smiling like an idiot! :D
    Thanks TGV for this sweet review :)

      Good video as always. I agree and UA-cam is the worst thing that ever happened for compulsive watch buyers! Which one would you say is best - this or the cocktail time? The straps are terrible on the cocktail time, straight nasty, but the dials look great. From the video this looks like a better all rounder?

    100% agree with you. The same quality Swiss watch will cost about $1.500. The only anther watch to compare is super SEIKO Automatic SARB065 Cocktail Time for range $330 - $360. I just love.

      It is a nice traditional well made watch and what most people should be wearing but I would not say it is as good as a $1500 Swiss but it is not that far off.

      The sarb065 and the like are nice. I wish for the power reserve ones they didn’t write out “power reserve” it cheapens the watch...

    Just picked up one on eBay for $275.....it's really a superb watch and looks like it cost multiples of $275. Very classic looking evening/formal watch for men. Every man should have at least one formal watch to wear with suits. etc., and this fits the bill perfectly. Thank you TGV...really love mine!

    Advertisement. Advertisement is the reason why more people are not going crazy about that watch. No one know it exists until you start watching YT watch videos. Orient needs to get these watches into the many jewelry stores in the malls to expose it to the masses like Seiko,Citizen, Movado, Bulova, Victorinox, etc....

"Even the watch snobs will have a hard time saying anything negative about this" - well said! I really want one now too! I love the blue dial orient star classic but that only seems to be a JDM.
    EDIT: I bought the black dial version 2 years ago. I where it the most often out of all my collection - fantastic watch!

    Writing from 2022, it seems Orient and Orient Star watches still fly somewhat under the radar, outside of collectors. A year ago, I took a Orient Helios into a jewelry store to have the bracelet sized. The Jeweler commented to me that he wasn't familiar with Orient but that it was a beautiful watch. The watch proved too big for my wrist but I was able to sell it online for close to what I paid for it to a new collector. Anyway, Orient Star is still a steal and I have it on my list.

      The Urban Gentry
      Man, I don't know. I think it really comes down to this: Would you wear it? And how much? I personally am trying to temper my urge to buy watches that I know deep down that I won't wear very much - in other words, "specialty" pieces that have limited use. I may even clean house a bit and try to whittle my collection down to 5 or less.
      But that's just my approach. Maybe you are happy with adding "specialty" pieces here and there?
      Still, it is a very nice piece and a great buy for $400. But don't let the "bang per buck" factor decide for you. Make sure you really want the watch and will wear it.

    • @youtubister
      @youtubister 9 років тому

    I just want to say that the fact that you measure lug to lug length is HUGE. Everyone talks about case diameter, but anyone that knows anything about how a watch wears knows that lug to lug length is equally important. I'm amazed that it isn't a listed dimension by every retailer. The sizing and value of this piece convinced me to pull the trigger on this model and spare the guilt of the Longines Flagship Heritage. 75% of the joy, 20% of the price. I'll take that math any day.

For the enthusiast like myself, your true admiration for the pieces you review would strike a chord with the internal dialogue that all watch collectors go through in their heads when a piece arrives in the mail regardless of price point. Hi TGV, here's a question for you. Thought it would make a nice comment rather than a personal email, in case your viewers want to chime in.
    For a long time, I have only ever considered automatic watches for my collection. However, I have found myself drawn to Bulova watches of late and their high precision UHF movement. They just recently announced a new, slightly smaller, 140th Anniversary Precisionist. It is an acquired taste and I expect around £500-600. I am torn whether to purchase or place those funds toward the Tudor Pelagos that you know is on my buy list.
    Any thoughts on this.
    Best Regards, Dave.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  9 років тому +1

      Geekanoids Excellent question. I too am drawn to the Bulova precisionist movement, the smooth sweep is very alluring to us Automatic fans right? I wonder what the actually movement looks like. I have no experience of Bulova so I can't honestly say, despite however their old HQ (a stunning example of American Art Deco) is in my neighbourhood:
      upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Bulova_Corp_Center_75-20_Astoria_Blvd_jeh.jpg
      Personally, I would save for the Tudor, they seem to be making such a strong come back Tudor, their range is very strong. I love the old day date tudors in steel myself. Really understated.
      Best regards,
      TGV

    I just received my orient star classic a week ago and have been wearing it daily to work, stock band and all. This watch punches WAY above its weight on the luxury and quality scale. It has become one of my favorite watches, looks to be the most expensive by an order of magnitude, yet is one of the cheapest. I would recommend this watch to any collector who has become weary of the "prestige" watch factor and subsequent price inflation of "classic" watches. It's impossible to say, but this O.S. Classic could indeed be a real classic 20 years down the road. And at $399 you're not taking a big risk to find out.

    Such an amateur question, but what is a good cheap watch for everyday use that is still pretty durable? I wouldn't take it with me mountain biking or anything, but sometimes I venture out when I don't really expect to.

    Great channel and very useful review. My one quibble is the use of the term 'dress watch'. This Orient is of a style (in fact far larger and more bulky in terms of thickness) that most people used to wear throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s. Not for dress purposes, but everyday, during all sorts of activities. To my eyes it is an 'everyday' watch but in a more traditional style than most available today. A very slim, gold, 34mm round watch or an even smaller rectangular watch from a high-end maker on a crocodile strap would be a 'dress watch', but even then the term does any watch a disservice, implying fragility and unsuitability for everyday wear. With common sense (around issues such as water resistance) any watch can be worn at any time. And finally, the Japanese really need to learn how to make slimmer automatic watches! This one ticks so many boxes until it's turned onto its side, revealing the unsightly thickness of the case. The SARB Seikos are the same; beautiful until seen from the side. Anyway, keep up the great work...the channel is a fantastic resource!

    At the present time I wear an old beat up Tissot pr 50 automatic that I bought years ago. I have been thinking about putting a small collection together as a reward to my self for eliminating a hand full of debts I accumulated over the past few years, so each time one of my debts is cleared I am thinking of adding a new watch. I like the Seiko and thought it would be a nice semi-dress watch for occasions requiring one. It's in my opinion a "legitimate " watch: in house movement reasonably accurate and unpretentious yet stylish. As my debts decrease I will most likely move upscale in price, but this is a good starting point .it would be one of the only watches with a leather strap I might own as I live in the desert and I fear the sweat factor would shorten the straps life span.

    I think the power reserve indicator "makes" this watch. That's a very unique feature that is normally found on much more expensive pieces. I also like that they had the courage of including lug holes for easy strap changes. The strap you put on this thing is stunning, the green color makes it more "retro" and gives it a 1960s look.
    The only knock on the piece, if there is one, is the height of the case -- 13mm is a little tall for a dressier watch, most watches of this style do not exceed 10mm.

      @theurbangentry  9 років тому

    I have to admit. Although I'm not generally a big Orient fan.....this is a very smart watch for a VERY good price. I might have to give it some thought! I do appreciate the power reserve which allows you to keep it out of the watch winder until needed and I love that it has the date. Can't seem to keep a watch that doesn't show the date.

    What would you recommend between this and Junkers Bauhaus Swiss ETA Automatic. I like them both on the design front, equally. My suggestion, the next watch you should review is the Orient Star Skeleton.
    Long Island watch should be comp'ing you for these reviews, bro. I never knew about the Orient Star Classic until I saw your review. I bought it, from that seller, and I absolutely love the piece. They've since sold out of all of their Orient Star Classic models, most likely because of the positive review. Obviously I don't want to see your reviews corrupted by the outside influences, but LI Watches gets a major benefit from having you review their pieces.

Regarding LIW, they have been extremely kind to me and as a returning customer, their service is exceptional. The future of watch retail, like everything else is going to be online, so I want to see places like LIW do well.

    Good review, a great watch. Regarding the crystal, this domed crystal watch is styled on vintage watches from times past and is pretty true in many ways, hence no Sapphire. I have a Sinn 356 which has a domed acrylic crystal. A sapphire domed would lack the look this has. My only criticism is that the movement isn't decorated enough for it to feature an exhibition back - a steel engraved back would be more in tune and a better option. The Handwound version WZ0011DD is worth looking at - better looking, nicer made, solid back and handwound.

    Recently bought this watch (black dial version) mainly because of your review! In person I am amazed at the quality of finish for the price - even the bracelet it came with is so beautifully brushed and polished. However part of me wishes I should have bought the black dial Tissot Visodate instead - yes it’s more expensive, maybe not quite so exquisitely finished and also the dial is a little too reflective but I think it is a more beautiful and cooler looking watch than the OS and also I would love to have an automatic with a day complication as well as the date.
    Update: regulated mine using a timegrapher and now keeping great time! Also liking it more and more each week. It’s just sensational quality. No regrets now.

      D Pec Thanks - good to hear from someone that has both. Thinking of getting the visodate nevertheless. Not ‘bonding’ with my OS Classic at all (doesn’t help that it consistently runs 20s fast on the wrist which annoys after me reading so many reviews that boast of absolutely sensational accuracy)
