  • We did it again, we got stuck pretty badly with our Land Rover Defender, this time on top of a remote mountain in Argentina. (Tromen Volcano).
    If you remember the time we sank our Land Rover Defender, you might remember how tough it was. In that case we got help from locals to rescue our car. In this case we are alone to find a way to get our bluelandy unstuck from snow and mud.
    We knew it was going to take a lot of effort and team work to get out of this one. What we didn't know it would end up being the most difficult self recovery to this date.
    Seat down and chill while we sweat our asses off. Everything got recorded, and it is as raw as it gets.
    Enjoy the Ride!

    What a recovery! I just came to see the disaster. As an overlander I also had such experiences. That's why they say: "A 4x4 without Lockers is only half a 4x4". Besides Recovery boards the first thing I would upgrade are front and rear lockers. They can really safe your ass. If one side looses traction the power goes the way of least resistance. Wheels without traction are spinning and where you have traction nothing moves. Believe me, it's a great investment.

    Great fun video. Hard work but you will always think back about this situation as fun. There is always a way to anchor a winch, even burying the jack or something horizontal in a dug trench. I would have high-lifted the back right to get the tire completely off the ground and piled rocks under the tire and behind to make more even traction, out of the rut you created. Saves all that digging. Maybe also lift the front right the same process. I admire you in your travels. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you for watching! We tried lifting the car with the high lift, like we have done many other times. You can see Kai doing it, but it was extremely dangerous as the high lift was sinking in the mud! No chance to do it safely for us or the Landy.

    Great job guys. A winch may have helped but on reflection if it was too easy you wouldn't have the memories, experience and now the sense of achievement. A winch works well with two vehicles, unless you get lucky enough to have a point to anchor it of course. Keep up the great work and content guys.

    5:44 I see that everything was covered by snow, there was no way of tell which was the best line. A beautiful place to get stuck. All along I thought that landrovers had the option to lock the dif. Was funny how you were trying to prevent wheel spin with ropes. A front, center and rear lock is a dream feature.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  6 місяців тому

      Hey Nicolas, in Diet the conditions were difficult, and with a lot of slushy snow on the left I was not sure how far left I could go…
      Defender come as a standard with central diff lock and reduction, which in combination with great axle movement makes them great 4x4s.
      I'd love to have a diff-lock in the rear axle but it was always a bit too expensive and I didn't see enough justification for it. As soon as the rear diff needs replacement I'll put in either a Detroit locker or an air locker.

  • @alexanderrohlfing2072
    @alexanderrohlfing2072 7 місяців тому

    I hope you don't misunderstand this!!!
    Despite the fact that you worked together brilliantly and showed a lot of patience, I cannot understand why, after almost sinking your Defender, you still haven't refitted a winch. Perhaps because I competed in off-road competitions for over 10 years, before I discovered my passion for overland travel with my 110 Defender.
    I cannot understand why many overlanders do without a winch, especially as they are usually on the road alone and with heavily loaded vehicles .
    But it looks like you've learned your lesson this time. Winch and plasma rope are simply a must, especially if, like you, you like to travel “off the beaten track”.
    In theory, you could have “winched yourself out” with your high lift, but to do that you would have needed the additional kit - a set of chains that would have turned your high lift into a kind of cable pull.
    But without a point to securely attach the high lift, you wouldn't have gotten much further, even with this kit.
    An additional equipment, whether with a winch or a cable pull, that might be of use in a situation like yours, could be an „earth-anchor.
    Here I recommend that you look for forestry supplies. There are variants that are heavy, but take up relatively little space. Simply described, these are 2 or 3 solid flat irons that are connected at one end and can be folded apart in a V shape.
    A shackle and a winch rope or similar can also be attached to an eyelet there.
    The flat irons usually have 3 holes each through which approx. 1-1.5 cm thick and 50-70 cm long „steel nails“ can be driven into the ground...
    Even a simple V-shape with 6 steel rods, in fairly solid ground is sufficient for your Defender.
    Another accessory for your high lift could also make sense.
    Two massive hooks are attached to the high-lift, which can be hooked into the holes in the rim. This means you can lift the axle directly and not just the frame or body. so you can e.g. easily raise a wheel so far, that you can put a recovery board underneath it and get out of a hole or ditch, without much shovelling work.
    Should you ever have to get yourself out of an awkward situation backwards, take a look at the recovery set from „Bog Out“, which is “wound” over a wheel, like a snow chain and then winds up on the tire, which means you can, so to speak, a la Munchausen, pull yourself out of the mud by your own braid. However, this only works, if the wheel used, is also rotating.
    OK, enough “smart shit”, I hope my tips help you! keep it up!

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      No worries! We agree with your points! They make sense for some and it's important to consider them. For us we struggle so much with space in the Landy, that there is no way we would be able to transport an earth anchor or similar around the world. We know that with additional kits we would be out a lot faster than in this example, but Overlanding in our understanding is also working with what you have. Regarding the winch, the space would not be an issue. But as you mention without a proper anchor or similar in this case it would be useless. We might get one winch in the future, but for this trip the $$ and the extra weight for winch+bumper seemed not to be justified.
      Thank you for following along and leaving some" smart shit" in the comments, we really appreciate it 🤗❤️

  • @alfamud
    @alfamud 7 місяців тому

    Next time without a winch and anchor points, try the "dead man anchor" with your extra tire, then use the hi-lift, 2 hours digging vs 1 day trying stuff.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  6 місяців тому +1

      We don't think the Highlift would be able to pull the nearly 3 tons of the Landy. Burying the tire in this terrain is really a lot of work, that's why we didn't go for it after realizing the rock didn't hold...

    I have a winch fitted to my 300Tdi and it's great when needed, you do use it when you have one, to help others most of the time, however, it is 30Kg of your payload which could maybe be used better elsewhere if only needed twice in so many years travel. The other issue is because you have a winch fitted you may be tempted to tackle a route you would otherwise avoid & get into deeper trouble, it's a hard one but a longer rope or more straps & a Tirfor hand winch is a very versatile unit and good idea. Admire your calm approach to a crisis, not making it any worse is a great ethos.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      Yes! The extra payload is something to consider as well as the $$ for the winch and a new bumper. For the moment it was not worth it. I can believe having one can mean you take more risky paths 🙈 I think we are used to having some trouble so one just follows the usual steps without getting to stressed. 😅

    Possible solution: tie both the front and back wheel on the high side together, effectively blocking them from turning. Both the low side wheels in the ditch then will get all the drive via the open differentials and that gives a possibility to manhandle yourself out of the ditch. Block the free spinning wheels from turning, because they have proven themselves useless in the attempt to drive, but are taking all the power away from the load bearing wheels on the low side.

    • @Thebluelandy

  • @CanadianSledDog

    It's good to dig out under the vehicle before letting air out of the tires because you will have much more ground clearance to get the shovel under there. Your dedication to camera work is amazing I can't wait to watch more! I also would recommend v-bar tire chains, you can carry 2 or 4 but I always start with only chaining up whichever wheel is spinning and that is usually enough. Just make sure you have enough tire clearance if you want to use tire chains.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  6 місяців тому

      Hey thank you so much! Glad you enjoy the videos!
      We have really heavy duty chains, but they weigh 30kg a pair and are quite bulky. Therefore we didn’t want to drive them around with us for two years. Where we only had maybe 5 days with enough snow to use chains.

    • @CanadianSledDog
      @CanadianSledDog 6 місяців тому

      @@Thebluelandy I've had big truck chains in my 4Runner for many years now, only used them a couple times, I actually don't need them for deep snow so I reserve them for recovery, but there was one time when the mountains just turned to ice while I was camping up there, I don't know if I would've made it back down safely without them. They make a good counterweight anyway since me and the dogs all ride on the driver's side. And they're lighter than a winch, especially with a winch bumper, easier to install, and probably safer to use.

    If your going to be bogged somewhere, there is a good a place as any. you can buy or make a ground anchor similar to a boat anchor that you dig into the ground and winch with your high lift jack. you could also burry the spare wheel and place a bar or log behind the wheel and winch off that. in that case going backwards first would have saved alot of time but life is an adventure and you sucedded so well done and happy trails.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому +1

      A winch would have made everything a lot smoother, no doubt. Regarding going backwards, we could do it only creating a platform, and that meant hours of work , we thought very naively we could avoid. Without platform the risk was way to big of getting stuck further down in the snow channel. And then no way to get out by ourselves 😭

    I'm with Kai. Instead of a winch I'd get some chains and new tires if yours have no tread left - maybe even MTs. Oh, and adjusting the tire pressure before it's too late also might help to prevent these kinda situations 🙃 ...if you still want to spend some coin, get diff lockers.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      Yes! We have chains back in Germany! For snow it's the best for sure, but fore the trip it was way too much considering most of the time we would drive during summer months. Our tread is basically nearly 0 haha, we are pushing our BFGs to the limit as we want to finish the trip and then buy knew in Europe. We had MTs and we sold them after some months because they were TERRIBLE in snow. We had a very scary moment coming down a mountain in France and 0 grip before a corner. That was the moment we decided to sell them. For mud, they are the best. In snow sometimes higher pressure helps, depends the consistency of it. And diff locks, yeah we are considering in the future a Detroit locker. Thank you for your comment!!

    Nice work getting out. I see you realised like I did( learned the hard way as well ), better to work with gravity when possible, than against it . Winch helps in some situations, but with means to lift the car, shovel. and recovery boards. you can get out most things except river crossings... A locker is a very good thing to have, at least a rear one. And since you are crafty engineer, you can do the install yourself. You already have on board air. That is half of the expense already. I would consider more a locker, no extra weight or space in the car, and 2 more sand boards.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      Yes! Sometimes is better to retrieve 🙌 the winch is necessary in very specific occasions and it's always better to master other ways of recovery to don't over depend on it. We consider a locker in the back but a Detroit locker. Regarding the air lockers, even though we have air on board, we have learnt it is very difficult sometimes to build enough high pressure when we are in high altitude (4000m over sea level) and then it's not that reliable anymore. But yeah, most probably something we might consider before getting a winch.

    Hi, I really enjoy the channel and great idea in building yourselves a path out. A lot of people say winch and lockers, and those do help tremendously so im not knocking them, but in the meantime until those become a reality you have what you have. Something you could have done since the rocks were sliding is dig a hole and bury your spare tire so that you have something to anchor to. I have done this many times and the jack will fail before the tire drags. Just be sure to also dig a channel for your tow rope/cable so the force is being pulled into the dirt instead of up out of the hole.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

    And then you kept trying to go FORWARDS , digging the Car ever Deeper . Rule number ONE in a Bogged situation ?
    TRY TO REVERSE OUT of it , back to where you actually HAD some traction . Once out , reassess your Line/Route .
    I mean , seriously the Car was Pointing Uphill . Backwards was smarter just ANYWAY . And YES , carry and Use chains .

      Hey John, you are Right. The problem with going backwards was that without building a huge platform that would hold the hole weight of the car there was no where we could have went. That’s why we tried it forwards knowing that it would be difficult going uphill.
      I the end we had to build the platform anyway, to get out. I always try first measures that are less invasive. But sometimes it’s the only way.

      Somebody wrote the same about our Sandboards. We don't have the feeling they are more slippery than others. We never liked the plastic ones and ours allows us to build bridges in case of need. The problem in this case is that we were super tilted and the left side had no load. The springs were completely extended! So even with more grip that was not the way to go. That's why we tried locking them with straps. Which also didn't work as intended 😭

    cross slopes are a complete pain....best to get out and walk the route for thirty minutes than spend three hours digging yourself out.
    to carry.....two high lift jacks, some 5 tonne slings, shackles, two 5 tonne hand comealongs (tirfors), a spade for digging and a ground anchor.....with these you could have pulled your back end back up....ooh err misses!...(British joke!)...and likely got out backing up the hill......winch....not needed too heavy mostly never used.....these will still be cheaper than a winch!....i am not a fan of winches.
    difflocks are a great help (i don't have them fitted but seen them in action....V handy!)
    tyre choice.....i use Michelin 7.50 x 16 XZL on my Td5 90....used for farm work in sunny Scotland.....where it rains occasionally...usually about 340 days out of 365.......i swear by these XZL tyres.....not great on wet roads....but a farm defender is meant for towing and X country work........heathery hill , mud, snow and wet grass.....XZLs they are standard fit for Brit army landrovers.....says it all really....
    keep posting the vids....really enjoy them.....:)

      Ja ich hab so ein bisschen das Problem das ich es vor mir selbst kaum rechtfertigen kann noch große Modifikationen zu machen nach dem wir so eine Tour gemacht haben und es eigentlich gut funktioniert hat 😅.
      Klar Winde sieht gut aus und kann nützlich sein und hat will haben Faktor. Aber so wirklich brauchen weiß ich nicht 😂

      Wie gesagt ,deine Entscheidung wie du dich ausrüstest ! Meine Philosophie ist lieber Winde dran und nicht brauchen ,als dringend brauchen und nicht haben .Es hat sich schon mancher am Strand fest gefahren und dann kam die Flut .Totalverlust verdirbt die Stimmung .Wenn ihr zu zweit seid reicht auch ein Ratschenseilzug und ein langes Seil .Einer im Auto ,der andere bedient den Seilzug !? Aber wie gesagt ,deine Entscheidung ,man kann auch Problemsituationen durch gute Planung vermeiden !👍

    Great teamwork, kudos to all.
    Doing some solo offroading myself, I admire your stamina.
    Regarding a winch: I have none because I feel it could sometimes be enticing to take some unnecessary risks which I probably wouldn't take if I knew that I have no winch ;)
    Am I making sense to you? If not, I'll rephrase in German.

      We are not sure other type would be better in this situation. The main problem was that we had no load on the left side , the springs were completely expanded, so not sure if any other material would have helped. We like these boards and have helped many times in the trip. The only downside is after using them one needs to straighten them again 🙈

    First of all, congratulations on the effort and the channel!! I know it's easier said than done, but wouldn't it have been easier to reverse first? Then with the car perpendicular to the track, move forward?

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      It was really dangerous to go backwards without crating a platform! We could end up easily in the channel and then no way we would de able to get out by ourselves. Because we knew this we tried first to go forward, thinking it would be easier. Haha it wasn't. We have learnt that when we have that level of inclination,making one side completely free without load, there is no way we can create grip to get out.

    Becareful with the caribiner you used for the hi-lift hack (13:45), those carebiners are made for climbing, not for recovering a heavy Land Rover, you should be using a D-Shackle. Great video over all.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      Yeah...we know that the carabiner doesn't hold the whole weight of our Landy, as long as the carabiner functions ok, it can be used. With the high lift and the rope you don't apply enough force to be able to break it anyway. The safest thing is to use soft shackles, but we only have two 🤷 thank for watching and commenting!

    As much I love you guys I hate to criticize you but you guys didn’t need winches etc . I watched you stuck in water and I thought you learned a lesson but no. What you guys need a proper overland lessons . How to use a 4x4 car. I’m saying this because I own one and if you don’t know how to use it or if you are inexperienced when it comes to overlanding then you will forever be stuck like that. Spending all your precious time digging yourselves out and wasting your holiday. Invest in learning how to use your car and how to recover yourself please . Let me call my 9 year old son to watch this

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  3 місяці тому

      Hey Kenny, we spend more than two years Overlanding, drove close to 90k km on four continents I think we can say we know quite a bit about Overlanding.
      And yes we were stuck in many places, and we learned things in every situation. The water recovery had not much in common with this one. Sinking the car could have been avoided by walking the river first. This hill side event could have only be avoided by taking another path…. Or running chains (which stayed in Germany). Off-roading looks always easier on video than it is in real life. It’s the same here, the path was steep, tilted, and with the mix of snow and Mud extremely slippery.
      We’re moving a 3-ton car without axle lockers, on all-terrain tires in remote & tricky terrain. We get stuck, and free the car ourselves to continue the journey with the tools we carry… without any damage or injuries, what comes closer to Overlanding than this?
      Maybe it was not the most efficient process, we’re not in a race, we’re not on holiday, and its not wasted time if you learn something.

    Instead of a heavy winch fixed to the front consider buying a strong hand winch with steel rope such as a Tirfor for occasional recoveries. It can pull from any direction and does not rely on failing batteries. It can be stowed anywhere. A simple ground anchor (plough, stake, screw or buried spare wheel) would help. Those straps would have been more use laced through the wheels as grips for the tyres.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  6 місяців тому

      In that case we would have no idea where to store it really. We are really at the max of our Landy in terms of what we can carry. At least in the case of the winch, this is out of the way( even though is heavy). 🤷

    Great job learning on your feet. Digging always helps. But there is need to agree on a few safety rules that you must follow regardless of the length of the recovery and the desperation that comes with it. Like being under the car when the car is in gear, the driver attempting to drive while you were approaching the car on very slippery ground. Just rules to help you not turn an "exciting" recovery into a tragedy. Also, the topic on the winch could have waited 😃. No need kicking anyone when they are down.

      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! I understand your concern. We tried fixing the car to have a safer environment and it was not possible as all rocks were way too far or not stable. So we had to work with the car in the situation it was. Regarding the sliding while driving, it was my fault that I tried to get close to the Landy. Learnt that very moment, better wait for car to stop or take a walkie talkie. Thank you for your comment!

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      Hey! It look seasier than it was, so I understand the question 😉 in order to go backwards safely we needed to create a platform. We knew how much work that would be so we tried everything else before haha. Why we say we had to do a platform? Without one we had the high risk of sliding more into the snow channel, and then forget about getting out by yourself. So that's why 😁

      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      Yeah! We did many times backwards in other situations,but here in order to do it we knew we had to build some platform (without one, there was the risk of getting stuck in the channel). And we thought it was not that difficult to go forward... But we learnt, that the moment we have that level of inclination, our tires will spin and should focus on another strategy 😅

  • @RhythmofOverlanding

    it's not necessary to keep the right lane all the time, you can drive it on the middle/center of the road when there is no other cars. These remote places are no car at all. Off course if you have a winch will cut down lots of time for the recovery the car. It's important you have the winch. Drive safe and good luck, Bro....

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  2 місяці тому

      Hey!! We were driving on the right because it allowed us to have half the car out of the snow. It was at this part where there was no grass anymore. But we thought sticking to the right was better to avoid getting tilted too much...

    Watched the whole video, Good job getting it out, I'm an experienced off roader and my advice to you is never go out without a winch and snow chains, They're life savers and worth investing in. You can get a tow hitch winch that you can use as needed. Nice video

    you'd be better putting the sand boards under either the front or rear axle if you haven't got lockers on the axles. at the moment, you're giving traction to a wheel on each axle but the other wheels are spinning, and its taking the path of least resistance at each axle. At least if its all at the front or back you're centre dfflock is effective.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  7 місяців тому

      Yeah! We also tried that but it didn't work neither. We had too much spinning due to being so inclined. With a rear locker things would have been different.

      To go backwards we had to create the platform, because without one you can easily end up down in the channel and then for sure you cannot get alone from there. But we thought that we might make it forward and didn't want to put the work of moving rocks for hours 🙈
