A Perfect Random Wire for a POTA 3fer

  • On Nov. 25, 2023, I did a Parks on the Air (POTA) activation at Lock 32 Canal State Park (3fer with K-8098 & K-6532) in Pittsford, NY. This was my first time using a 29-foot random wire and it made it easy to operate within the boundaries of the POTA 3fer. I operated QRP SSB (and FT8 on 30m) with 10 Watts using my ICOM 705 and the mAT-705+ tuner. The random wire was configured as a vertical with the MFJ 1910 33' mast and a 6.5' counterpoise. I used the 9:1 unun and 1:1 choke by LDG.

    I can’t believe how seamless your videos are. Looking forward to the next one.

      Thanks, I’ve just been using iMovie. But I’ve been looking at DaVinci Resolve to see if it might help speed things up. Editing takes way too long for me, LOL.

      Thanks, Kevin! I need to put together some jumpers with the gator clips on them, but they’ll be nice to have on hand.

      Thanks, Chuck! I'm sure the band conditions were a big factor. But it's good to know it really can get out there. I need to cut one or add a link for 41' next, since I hear thats a good size too.

      You bet! It’s always good to get you in the log. I love it when I work across the bands like this and can give the park (or all 3 parks!!!) to hunters on multiple bands.

    Great video Mike. I love hitting that 3fer. You're right about lots of people always around. Maybe I'll see you in a park one of these days. N2TKT

      Definitely! I’ve even bumped into a few hams at that spot when I’ve activated from the picnic table. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for sharing the video as it is nice to see how other modes get activated as I am a 100% CW QRP guy, cutrently inactive as my wife requires 24/7 care for a broken arm spiral fracture. Glad to see the bands were open, 10M used to be my favoite band in the 1970's. I need to get something going on 15-6M now as my Penntek TR-35 & TR-45L are limited to 17M & down. Cheers, Davey --KU9L

      Thanks, Davey! CW is on to-do list--I'll eventually get around to it. If you don't have one, a 17-foot telescoping whip is a great antenna (MFJ, Chameleon, WRC and others make ones). They can be adjusted to a 1/4-wave on 6-20m and can be setup multiple ways, like a mag mount, tripod, etc. A quarter wave has a nice takeoff angle for DX too.

      Thanks! It's always fun when the bands are open, LOL. As I'm sure you know, it's crazy watching the channel grow and seeing what resonates with people and what doesn't. It's full of surprises.

      I'm probably going to try a 41' one soon too. The nice thing about the LDG 9:1 or 4:1 ununs is all you need to do is just cut some wire and you're all set.

    I have put a 4:1 unun in place of a 9:1 on a 29 ft vertical and gotten better matches on 30m through 6m

    Wow! What a video! Do you work for a tv station or something? Wish I had those skills. My movies are a jumbled mess. Hihi 73’s de n5vwn

      Thanks for the compliment! No, I don't have any experience working in TV. I'm just using iMovie (but might try another app soon) to edit the videos on my MacBook Air. I've just been learning as I go this past year. While I still feel like it takes way too long to edit, the more I do and the more I watch, the better I'm getting.

      I use luma fusion so I can integrate two movies at into one timeline. De Vinchi was tried but crashes on my iPad. Easy enough to use though.

    Do you notice a difference between a 29' and a 35.5' EFRW antenna?

    • @MikeN2MAK
      @MikeN2MAK  9 місяців тому

      40 meters didn't seem as good as the other bands and didn't seem as good as the 35.5' EFRW. I need to try the 29' on 40m some more though, possibly for a late shift instead of the morning like I did for this video. Thanks for watching!

    link for the drive on mast holder??

    • @MikeN2MAK
      @MikeN2MAK  9 місяців тому

      It’s a tire mount by Flagpole-To-Go. Here’s the link to it on Amazon, where I purchased it a little over 2 years ago. There might be different sizes, so just be sure it’ll fit the bottom cap diameter of your mast. a.co/d/2Q8W0ts

      @@MikeN2MAK yeah thats the problem, the sotabeams 7000hds is 2.5 inches on the cap

    • @MikeN2MAK
      @MikeN2MAK  9 місяців тому

      I know! I have that mast too and was bummed when I realized it just won’t fit. I haven’t seen one big enough for that yet. I thought about making something but it just hasn’t. When a priority. I do like the HDS mast and use it in the field and for travel, since it collapses nicely. Let me know if you find a solution.
