Dave Gilmore uses this to great effect on the solo to 'keep talking' from the division bell. When used well and in the correct place it can sound amazing.
After watching this, I discovered that if you crank your iPhone, stick the speaker corner in your mouth and play back a recorded solo you get a convincing Talk Box effect with a respectable amount of volume. I would imagine you could use an iRig type setup, clip your phone next to the microphone and have an easy Talk Box solution in a pinch.
intrsoul I have a fat friend that discovered this principle while listening to punk rock and I used to say "you're so hungry you're eating music now". We couldn't stop laughing
This video just confirms everything I've ever thought owning a talk box and vocoder would be like, it would be so hard to take yourself serious because you'd always be joking around.
You guys are amazing. You really are dedicated to us out here. I was one of the people that suggested this topic and I think it is a difficult topic to demonstrate. I was thinking that it might not happen because I think these effects are on the dusty shelf with chorus and dad's old Valley People 610 compressor (is this a good compressor?). You guys made the funniest That Pedal I have seen. Thanks guys! -Russ
+Russ Reitter Thank you Russ, much appreciated. We had to look the VP610 up on the web... A pretty good sounding two channel VCA studio compressor by all accounts. Never tried one. Thanks for watching!
Thanks. I actually learned a lot and realized I had no idea how these things worked. My respect for Walsh, Frampton, et al was greatly increased. Not because they had the skill to use these, but they were able to maintain their dignity while doing so.
The sounds you have created in this video may very well rival the majesty of Chappers and Captain's Miku pedal review. "I bought these" - Dan, July 2016
I have never played guitar. Wasn't really interested until watching these guys cover pedals (I use them for synths). Now I'm thinking of buying one and taking lessons! Dan and Mick, you guys are awesome and have way too much fun!
Excellent Video! Cher's Believe was Autotune. The producers initially said in Sound on Sound that it was the Digitech Talker. The Digitech Talker was more like the Boss Vocoder Pedal. A vocoder works by dividing the synth input signal into bands (at least 12 to be useful), then analyzes the Voice input into the same amount of bands, and then keys the synth bands on and off matching the frequency components of the voice signal. The first widely heard recorded use was by Wendy Carlos. I hope one day you do a video about bit crushers! Sample and bit-rate reducers are a lot of fun. Get your hands on a Frostwave Alienator (or ANY of the Frostwave pedals that you can!). Mooer do a very servicable one, as do Earthquaker.
I have the MXR talk box and I've figured ways to get both your main amp to play and use the talk box at the same time. I have two methods, one is placing it within a bypass effect looper or a blender pedal, I use an Rocktron Bypass Effects loop with a mix knob and set the output to full direct signal, or two use an A/B with a thru box and have a ground loop eliminator 1/4 jack on the output of the talk box. Removes a lot of problems and gives you flexibility with your rig.
Pure freaken comedy gold. Why the hell don't you guys have a prime time show on national TV??? Thanks so much, your show is such a perfect way to start the weekend after a shitty work week.
Awesome my favourite bit is when Mick is opening his mouth when Daniel is playing and then Daniel is doing the same and they are totally oblivious to it at the time! Good stuff and very entertaining guys
You guys are usually great at showcasing loads of different types of pedals; I think you should've tried to get your hands on a Rocktron Banshee 2 (Which is a talk box that can do the dry signal AND the talk box signal at the same time), and when it comes to vocoders, you should've tried getting your hands on the discontinued Digitech Talker - I'm the guitar tech for a band (Electric Guitars, how great a name is that?!), and both guitarists/singers use this old vocoder; it tracks really well, and sounds amazing. MUCH better than the Boss you had on the board in the video today. Thanks for another great video! The ending had me crying laughing! Cheers from Denmark, Niels
Thanks, Dan and Mick, that got steadily funnier as it went on...and Dan's closing admission that he'd bought them...priceless! The fact is, there are some classic tracks that are memorable because of the voice tube..."She's A Woman" on Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow, "Rocky Mountain Way," "Do You Feel" etc...but it's a very niche effect and there's a definite skill required to use it effectively. Great show, guys, as always!
that would have been so nice ...please do guys. can anyone assist pls me with the original song name and band I do know it but it's only an earworm now?
I don''t know why it has taken me this long to watch this episode.. seriously one of the funniest episodes you have ever done! Thanks for the good laughs!
I want to see you fellas do an affordable pedal board challenge where you can make a board with no pedals over $100. So we will know which affordable brands get the That Pedal Show "stomp" of approval. Great vid as always.
You can easily send both your guitar signal to the amp and the talkbox to the tube by putting a TL072 Op Amp (or similar) as a buffer directly after the input jack on the internals. Re-plumb the bypass switch to just turn on one input to the tube driver and add another stomp switch that turns your amp on and off.
BEST THAT PEDAL SHOW EPISODE EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
trollfiddler lol two of the best pedal vids *EVER*
Just revisited this during Corona - it’s absolutely one of the best episodes ever! THIS IS THE VINTAGE SETTING 😂
The last 30 seconds of this review is one of the best things I have ever seen on UA-cam
Glad a watched until the end...Made my day! Mick's face after "I bought these" is priceless.
`I`ve bought these.........` Collapse into total hysteria. My eyes are sweating with laughter......... That`s set me up for the day.
Rabea Massaad always moves his mouth when hes playing, maybe he should try on of these
lmao
THIS IS THE VINTAGE SETTING
+1
But it doesn't sound like a Talk Box... :)
Joel Pickett *-THIS IS THE VINTAGE SETTING-*
Joel Pickett the should make a t-shirt with that
Sounds like "this is the vintage shitting"
the last minutes in this video were ABSOLUTELY genius!!!! thank you once again!
Dan and Mick.
Probably the best ant-depressant in the world.
Ant depressant - downers for ants?
+Harry Souter yeah dude. Most of the ants south of London are down and out most Friday's. It's sad relaly
It's like Valium but for insects.
I always heard the best ant depressant is the foot.
It's nearly four years later, I'm watching back through old videos you guys did- and I think I pulled something laughing.
Man oh man, nothing in this world is funnier than Mick with a talk box!
The faces that go along with Dan using it are priceless! Love ya guys! Don.
"Somewhere out there, there's a use for this". Brilliant!
You NEED to take this on the road. I'll play over-chorused fretless bass.
+Alan Angel If it ever happens, you have yourself a gig Alan. That bass sound couldn't be more perfect:0)
I need more episodes where Dan straight up laughs in Micks face as he plays
Dave Gilmore uses this to great effect on the solo to 'keep talking' from the division bell. When used well and in the correct place it can sound amazing.
Also on sheep, for the lords prayer part
@@steverogerson5380 and also on Pigs (3 different ones)
Learnt nothing, and enjoyed every minute of it 😂
2056: Channing Tatum has made a UA-cam channel with vsauce where they talk about guitar effects
Ezza Bryce I'm wheezing
Hey Vsauce, Michael here!
This is better than the whole video
@@josecanseco2477 here's the link to bon jovi livin on a prayer live 1987 ua-cam.com/video/8_lmzY8iIhg/v-deo.html
Hahaha..exactly
4:36 Watching Mick move his mouth while Dan was playing was hilarious! Oh, and that Victory Sheriff sounds glorious!
that under the bridge one genuinely brought tears to my eyes i was laughing so much

I’ve done this before just messing around before I even knew what a talk box was!
You can do something similar with a cheap pair of earbuds, just put them in your mouth.
Gotta agree. This is probably the best pedal show ever.
This video just confirms everything I've ever thought owning a talk box and vocoder would be like, it would be so hard to take yourself serious because you'd always be joking around.
man, just look at those faces! priceless! thanks for this video, I couldn't think of a better way to begin my friday! Cheers!
This is fantastic. I love Dan’s face when he’s talk boxin’
Funniest episode ever, watching them laugh makes me laugh
But it gets tedious after a while.....
+Good_king_guitarman yeah, I don't think it's contrived though, they seem to be genuinely happy, this episode just really got to me near the end.
This was the best 25 minutes I've spent at work for a long time!
this video single handedly changed my mind on getting a vocoder, thought i'd never use it if I did, the silliness has convinced me to get one
Brilliant guys!!! Had me in tears by the end of the show. 🤣🤣🤣 Calling out minor/major on the vocoder for the win.
We don’t see enough of those guys, just absolutely laughing their guts out, anymore. Might be time to revisit 😂
"I bought these... " brilliant. Hahahah
24:29
This is the best thing IVE EVER SEEN!
Hahahah!!!!
Seriously I had a pretty grueling day at work and I watched this afterwards on the bus, I was laughing out loud like a lunatic!
David Gilmour in "Pigs" is an interesting use of a Talk-Box.
I think that was a vocoder Gilmour was using
@@quicksilverhorseman2 I think it was an Heil Talk Box in Pigs (Three Different Ones), but the Floyd used a vocoder in Sheep.
Victory sounds really nicely tuned, its right in the sweet spot
this is the most underrated tps video. next level norwegian wood cover
i just keep watching the last 20 secs over and over...this is great after having a crappy day at work!!!

Norwegian Wood with that sound, a classic!
Thanks. I actually learned a lot and realized I had no idea how these things worked. My respect for Walsh, Frampton, et al was greatly increased. Not because they had the skill to use these, but they were able to maintain their dignity while doing so.

"I bought these" - Dan, July 2016
+Patrick Gavin That's about the highest praise anyone has ever given us Patrick. That video is the stuff of legend.
WHY have I never seen this episode before. Endless joy and amusement of the silly boxes.
I have never played guitar. Wasn't really interested until watching these guys cover pedals (I use them for synths). Now I'm thinking of buying one and taking lessons! Dan and Mick, you guys are awesome and have way too much fun!

Coffee went up my nose when Mick said "somewhere there is a use for that". I had only just recovered when Dan said "I bought them!" Great again guys.
Just seen this, an absolute classic episode 😀
You guys had so much fun on this video, it actually brightened my day a bit. Cheers!
Best comedy I've ever seen!
I own the MXR talkbox and its entertainment value for band and audience is unrivalled. I love it. Best recent purchase for me.
"I bought these" freakin' brilliant!
Such an EPIC show. You guys have one of the best guitar shows ever going on right now.
You guys are a gas.....I am becoming addicted to your show...
Aha! Welcome!

+Patrick Nelson Nice, thanks for sharing Patrick, and thanks for watching!
I needed some help with talk boxes for a while. Glad you guys made a video about that, thanks a lot.
Under the Bridge!!?? You guys are so hilarious. Watching you crack each other up is just the best
Pure freaken comedy gold. Why the hell don't you guys have a prime time show on national TV??? Thanks so much, your show is such a perfect way to start the weekend after a shitty work week.

You guys make the best videos.
Friday nights and a fresh ep of That Pedal Show have become the new norm (when I'm not out).
I cannot believe this was 5 years ago, that means Iv been a fan for many many many years this was an amazing show wow 5 years unreal
This is pretty much the greatest guitar related video I've ever seen!!!
This is gold. The best and funniest video!
I think it's almost time for a wah video guys.
Thanks, Dan and Mick, that got steadily funnier as it went on...and Dan's closing admission that he'd bought them...priceless!

I love the show ! ! !
There's nothing better than you on music business.
You are on top, not lonely maybe, but high there ! ! !
Whole show seriously funny, but that ending was priceless. Thanks guys.
I really look forward to Fridays, and it's mostly because of this show...brilliant and hilarious!
Great episode as all ways! Love that you guys do videos outside your own personal taste/comfort zones.
I absolutely LOVED how "Little Wing" sounded through the vocoder. I'm a sucker for that song in general.
Everything was completely made worth it by 20:36 on. Oh my word, please do an entire episode of songs’
that would have been so nice ...please do guys. can anyone assist pls me with the original song name and band I do know it but it's only an earworm now?
Lmao! This is amazing. When you start playing the songs at the end it reminds me of the "Cylon and Garfunkel" episode of Futurama 😆
I love how unsophisticated but yet so cool talk boxes are.
I don''t know why it has taken me this long to watch this episode.. seriously one of the funniest episodes you have ever done! Thanks for the good laughs!
that jam at the end was so brilliant!

The Gospel of Mark *stamp u idiot

wait, did i just get whooshed myself?
I did not really know what to expect before clicking on this video but I'll be damned if it wasn't your best video yet. Just brilliant!
2:14 - 2:16 on a loop for all time
that might be the most fun Ive ever seen you two have in one of these videos
Probably one of the coolest pedals definitely want one
Yeah, this is one of your best shows. great work. x
The end is hilarious, best channel on UA-cam!
+Lufie Alice cheers L :)
This video had me in stitches.
I didn't know much about talk boxes and now I do.
Good one!
Mick and Dan - making utter plonkers of themselves so you don't have to. Brilliant.
Now if we can combine these with the Miku pedal...
ResistReact oh no
(+ResistReact) Have one player use the Miku as the mic, and one player uses The Vocoder. Genius!
Alexis Harper I'm pretty sure what he meant is have the miku pedal behind one if the vocoders whilst on a pedal board.
Miku Stomp needs to go into the Send/Return of the VO-1
hahahahahahaha OMG
Best TPS yet!!! Brilliant! I laughed AND I learned.
That last 10 minutes was hilarious!
"I bought these" - EPIC!! That's what they call "grand finale".
Dans line right at the end of the video had me creased with laughter......one of the funniest moments I've seen on the pedal show... awesome job
Hands down, no one uses a talk box better than Roger Troutman from Zapp & Roger his use of it is absolute perfection 🤘🏻
Then there's that rarity of rarities, talkboxes in harmony: Those Shoes by the Eagles.
Rhubarb!! Bloody brilliant episode. Thanks guys
Great show lads!!! It's good to see that you can still make an excellent video without the medication!!!
This had me crying with laughter. Great show guys
+Peter Jessop thanks Peter :)

Brilliant! 20+ minutes plus is hilarious.
such an infectious laugh Dan, had me holding my sides watching you and Mick's deadpan expression
The best is their reaction to Dan saying he bought those! LMAO The Best Pedal Show
It's even picking up your accents! Btw, the most original cover of Little Wing ever!
Best. Little. Wing. Cover. Ever.
