- In today's video, Bruce and Sam are testing Talk Boxes! They are comparing the M222 by MXR and the Heil HT-1 by Dunlop.
Welcome our new show "Board Or Bin" where we test pedals against one another, in order to get the ultimate guitar tone and build the Golden Pedal Board.
Only one of these pedals will make it to our mighty Golden Board. The other one will go in the bin.

Thanks guys. I’ve got a session coming up that requires talks. The MXR will be given to me at the session.
Talk boxes are like that cool Christmas toy you stop using on boxing day.
Best way I can explain how to get consonants on the talkbox is to over-enunciate them (almost as if you're explaining something to an idiot for the 15,000th time).
"Do you feel like I do...Board or bin?!!!" 🎸
Se me quedó pegada jajaja
Does anyone know what Alex Savage OMFG uses?
If you use a modeling amp, the MXR is likely the same as the Heil because it too will have the power tube section in the sound
The Heil is the classic Peter Frampton talk box sound. The MXR has a softer more manageable sound. If you were layering talk box sounds or using it subtly you would use the MXR. If you want an in your face solo talk box sound you’d use the Heil. I’d have the Heil, just so that I could play Livin’ On A Prayer (Bon Jovi) and Kickstart My Heart (Mötley Crüe).
Question- I need to keep my main signal going through my amp. Can the mxr be setup in a stereo configuration? I was thinking of splitting the signal prior to the talk with a dual output pedal.
Maybe I had mine setup differently but don’t you need the mic to catch the sound? Needing a PA for use is a bit of a pain
Hi,i don't speak english.which of the two talkbox do they recommend?
thanks
Both
Can you use either one on a pedal board chain?
The sound is literally coming out of the tube. You would need to have that mic’d and going into the effect pedal to put an effect *after* the talkbox, but you can put any effect you want before the talkbox. When you click on the MXR, it turns off bypass and the sound stops going to the amp (or whatever is next in the chain) and comes out of the tube instead.
My buddy who happens to be awesome on the talk box used a splitter and a dedicated Amp so he could hear both I think the directions come with box he sounded awesome on those shoes.
He sounds like a fun guy 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🔥🔥🔥 #goodlad
MRX talk box on the board.. has a much warmer tone. The Heil is slightly pokier. Both great though and you two are having too much fun!
I do prefer the idea of having the unit on the board as well. We are having too much fun, the actual jam session we had using the talk boxes probably lasted longer than this video!
hello rasha, we have the same last name
Hahah this episode and the edit were hilarious!!
Btw the MXR has a softer, more elegant sound. But the aggression you get from the Heil I feel is still controllable and helps you cut in the mix a little better.
Lovely series, bring it on!❤️
I have both. The MRX is more convenient for practicing, but The Heil has more output. I am more partial to the Heil mainly because I'm a fan of Bob Heil who is also a fellow amateur radio enthusiast. He also manufactures top of the line microphones . Using a talkbox compliments your guitar skills, it's not going to make any talentless people rich.
hi i have a question regarding the safety aspect of the talk box i really want one but i had a brain haemorrhage back in 2007 and i have a coil fitted in my head essentially keeping me alive and you said it resonates in your head a fair bit now im thinking would this effect the coil or isnt it as bad as im thinking ok your not a dr or a brain surgeon i get that just wanted to ask your opinion as you have used it hope to read your reply
Use the real consonants from your mouth. Like spit out the B as a "P" then adjust mouth and make the "ough" then use the real "T" from your mouth. So without the talkbox it would sound like " B___T B (Bought or Bin). Try "ch" instead of "s" if it's not coming through. Also check out Roger Troutman on the vid "30 mn with Roger Troutman & Zapp ( Live @ BET in 1989 )" from 5:25. He has a cheeky little "squinch" shape for his mouth. He really spits out the "SS"
Both are good, I like the Heil better. I wonder about reducing the tube before it enters your mouth. Would it make it more manageable physically and also increase your ability to enunciate more sounds? The guy at 4:34 looks like he's using a smaller tube.
2:23 This is exactly what it's like for me as an opera singer. Sometimes you can stand four Meters away from a grand piano and not hear the rhythm or the chords
MXR for me, sounded more modern, also the Heil had some drive/distortion which I wasn't a fan of.
I have the MXR because I can use it with my halfstack, combo, or line six device. Absolute fun. Definitely BOARD!
I have used the MXR for a couple of years now and I love it BUT on that ROCKING side I DO struggle getting that bite from it. Thanks for the idea of a compressor or fuzz in the front. I just turned it to 11 and used the volume on my humbucker but that might get that kerchow so to speak.I wouldn't bin either of them. Do you feel like I do? lol
PS I subscribed as well.
Basically MXR is guitar/effect-pedals send into the tube while Heil Box is „the whole“ sound of the Amp send into the tube.
Now i wonder, do i even need an amplifier when playing the MXR Talkbox? And what keeps me from playing the Heil Box infront of the amp??
The talk box IS a speaker. The mxr evidently has its own amp inside. The heil requires an amp to power it. The speaker is projecting thru the tube. The mic picks up what comes out of your mouth. Requires an amp. The mxr has one. Yes, you could use it without an amp.
Do you guys have a contact ? I’d like to get in touch about a gear inquiry. Thanks!
Heil HT-1 is better to me thick and clear.
I’d love to hear one behind playing harmonics
Add a vote for the MXR
Get both!
Heil HT 1 👍🎶🎸+ lp custom
Love my heil box
The only thing that annoys me a bit with such a effect that it can get very unpleasant in high mids. I wish the unit simply has sort of way to filter it we find them offensive. Sort of basic lilter sweep potentiometer on unit.
MXR definitely seems more versatile to me, but I'm not playing it so maybe that's the player, could be the singer too, more for another show.. If its sooper fun and you play more what's to think about!
Uh…. Looking at it, it looks like a great way for me to get canker sores. I had a habit of chewing on plastic straws and every time I did, I got a canker sore. This looks like I’d get them all over again.
Sounds like u got the lyrics planned out 🙌🏼
I keep singing this post
I had a habit
Chewing on plastic…
It was not a very clinical test... I did glean that the MXR can do clean, unlike the old Rocktron Banshee which preceded the MXR...
MXR is very loud because it makes it very clear
Heil and then if you had the Framptone would be cool.
You could have compared it by playing the same thing on both of them without too much talking in between. But anyway, congrats for the show.
Singing ability plays no part in how proficient you are with a talkbox. The notes are obviously dictated by what the guitarist plays and not by vocal skill. I also found it intriguing that you mentioned Frampton as being a superb vocalist and attributed that to his superior use of talkbox in comparison to the likes of Sambora when Sambora is a phenomenal vocalist. It's clearly subjective but whether a talkbox sounds great is more to do with how much practice you put into it and not at all related to how well you can sing. Non-singing Heil owner btw :D
Yea, you're not "singing" the notes. All the sound comes from your guitar or whatever instrument you are using. It's mainly the shape of your mouth that dictates the sound that it is heard through the mic, like a vowel sound vs consonant etc. You just have to try it to understand but it's not hard and doesn't require a lot of "skill" per se. In about five minutes you should be able to do about anything anyone else can do.
I don't know why guitarists even bother with them all they instinctively ever do is immediate crappy guitar oohs ahhs & wahs then talk about how much fun it is, I'm buying an mxr22 to use with keyboard & actually sound good smh
Allthebest
Heil talk box
I'd say talkboxs are better when slash and Alice in chains do It without a doubt rocket queen live 92 Tokyo and man in the box destroy everyone and everything in its path you can't beat em

Mr. Talkbox is cheating. He's actually using a vcoder.
wrong
theres a vid of his explaining the difference between vocoder, talkbox, autotune
these guys suck at using it....
