CuChulainn gets so caught up in his own prowess and capability that he gets everyone around him hurt of killed. He boasts about how he'll wound the eel, the wolf, and the heifer but he never considers who the man he'll be fighting is. He's almost excited for all the fame and glory he'll gain at the Tain but he's going to kill his own foster brother.

Great reading Lora. I would welcome listening to more of these stories. While you encourage us to read specific Celtic tales.... I prefer to listen to these tales as to ensure I hear the correct pronunciation. 💚.

The Morrigan is an allegory for Ireland. She is a symbol of Ireland represented as a goddess. She is a sovereign goddess connected to Eirú. She wishes to offer the men who rule Ireland the country as a youthful prosterious beautiful peaceful nation ...or as a beautiful woman. That is how she wants to be accepted. She has different aspects. ONE of her aspects ...is that of a victimized woman of war. Macha ...who was forced to run while in labour to save her other children . She is Badhbh whose garden is a battle field. She is Nemain who is the frenzied desperate havoc of war. But she is ALSO cliodhna ...the beautiful queen of the bean sidhe ... She is Eirú ...for whom Eire is named. Bríd is her daughter the goddess of law learning fire and healing.
But she wants to be accepted for certain aspects by Cu Chulainn here. She wants to be accepted as young beautiful bountiful peaceful. And she wishes him to worship THESE aspects in here.
The author is telling the irish people you must worship these values in your homeland fairness equality justice sharing of our wealth.
There is a kind of poem called an aishling where poets write of Ireland as a beautiful woman offering herself. She is often rejected by men for their own selfish reasons. They want to use Ireland or they just want to gain fortune. Or they just want to fight. They are REJECTING the values that the morrigan wants them to hold dear and to worship.
The morrigan calls people to worship the young goddess she offers herself this way. I am Ireland here i am ...my wealth is to be shared ...my people are diverse but there is unity through that diversity ...it doesn’t have to be warlike.
She is offering this aspect of herself to the men partic the rulers of Ireland. And they reject it ..they reject her. She is deeply hurt. And mostly because she knows wha t will come for her people.
Ireland is not all light ....we have darkness as a people ...we are the warrior stalking you ...the predator driving you to paranoia. We are those who don’t play fair and we have a fierceness.
The truth is ....sometimes that is what happens.
A man chooses glory ...or he genuinely believes that is what is needed.
Every generation is offered morrigan in the aspect she truly wants people to accept a land for all where children are not harmed and the women don’t cry. But you have to work for it every day it has to be real....and that is hard because the garden of eden ...is a fussy bitch ...she doesn’t show up every day of the week . But sometimes ....if you really worship the morrigan in the way she wants you to have her ....you get a better word for your people.
The morrigan balled her fucking eyes out when John Hume died. That is all i will say. She balled her eyes out. BECAUSE HE ....accepted her in the way she offered herself.
But its not all light and stars. Because the history and the present of Ireland isn’t. It can be very tragic. Life is tragic.
But choose what you worship well. Dont worship war ...she thinks only little boys worship war ..and they die young...and she cries for them.
    Ireland cries for them.
She wants to help people get over the grief of the past. Yeah ..she is the frenzy of battle ...the hunter the stalker ....but remember ...she wanted Cu Chulainn to accept her as a land willing to nurture all and share wealth not to fight. But ...he didn't want to live long ....he wanted to be famous. Like a lot of young men.

Probably a long shot, but I'm curious. The word repeatedly translated as "doomsday" is that in reference to a specific Irish belief in and end times or cyclical destruction (akin to Ragnarok, but I know that's a different tradition) of the world, or is it just a reference to the end of time? (

would it be a fair assesment to make that the morrigan could even be a goddess of strife, and that war and battle simply allude to this using language more time appropriate?

    • @faeotoole5051

or i suppose, conflict is a better word

Sometime it seems like she's the goddess of history, or at least of A history.

Fae O'Toole she is a goddess very capable of dealing out strife, but i wouldnt exactly call her a goddess of strife. Remember that she is protecting her people aswell as her warriors, and she is even protecting Chu Chulain until he insults her. She is a goddess capable of both causing and fending off strife.
