      Rayne Orr I don't really care about squishing ants until they either
      a) try to climb my shoe
      b) get too close to my food
      Or c) it's a supermajor and they are attacking us.

    I always had a slight curiosity as to the incredible abilities of the ant kingdom, but never found too much interest to them...thanks to this amazing ass channel i now have an itch (hopefully not from any recent ant bites) to start getting into ant colonies...maintenance as you know of course may be a nightmare to start though. And of course now house a guilty conscious for what my younger self had done in the past to ants

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  8 років тому +8

      +RookieNoobGamer Awesome! It's a great hobby and ants are just amazing! Don't worry too much about maintenance as it isn't overbearing as long as the colony isn't massive and most ant colonies in captivity take years to get massive if ever.

    What happens to the ants when they die naturally in these environments? Do the other workers move them somewhere or are they eaten?

      i have a young messor barbarus colony since 3 or 4 month now. At the start there were ~45 workers + the queen :) Like 35 of them are minors, a few media and i think some of them are pygmies because they are sooo small! :D
      This is my first colony so i dont have that much knowledge about ants. Today after the first few month i have already seen a few majors(4 maybe 5 - THEY ARE SO HUGE!!! Awesome!) and more are comin'! I give them as much food(mostly seed but mosquitos and midges too)as i can to help them enough to grow and expand fast :)
      Is it true if get the majors so early im doin' everything right? I dont exactly know when i need to moist the nest part of my farm...
      Im so excited, sry for the long text!

    If somebody owns an insectivorous animal, is it possible to make a tube from an ant colony into say a predatory animal's cage so that there is a micro ecosystem, network? I mean it'd be a cool experiment to create a large ecosystem run by ant colonies that are feeders, and scavengers/ cleaners of the leftover food

      Shalom Griffinflyer no it just hurts. Btw there is a tribe that proves we are all weaklings they make a glove that places hundreds of bullet ants inside there they shove there hands inside there as long as they can. The longer there hand is in there the more of a man they are.

    you should have another colony of ants grow in a different nest, then attach them to see what happens... preferably the best ant war in history. maybe you could even make a battle ground for them! unless, of course, you don't like killing them for entertainment...

      When you have a colony you tend to love them like children. Asking someone to have 2 colonies fight is like taking some dogs and locking them together in a cage until they kill each other. You just can't bring yourself to do it

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  8 років тому +18

      +Paul Springer Yes, this was a mated queen removing her wings prior to starting her colony. Catching these queens is how to start a colony.

    So if you remain with just one queen, what is her life expectancy - and further on from that, do you have an idea for the life expectancy of the entire colony? When the queen dies, does she automatically get replaced, or would you have to introduce a new one?

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  8 років тому +5

      +Haunter great questions. Actually, ant colonies that lose their queen cannot create a new egg-laying queen. The colony decreases in numbers as the workers die out (worker lifespan = a few weeks or months) and with nobody to lay eggs the colony dies out. The queen can live up to 30 yrs in some species.

    I've been watching and loving this channel since 2012, I had a odd fascination with ants and if I didn't find this channel I probably wouldn't know that you could keep them in setups with a queen and brood. I used to have a bin outside my house and I'd steel ants from a nearby colony one by one. I used to feed them and everything. Man I miss the good old days

    A possible name for their satelite nest on the white sand hill could be: "Burning Man" or "Burning Man Hill." Each year there's a Burning Man annual gathering or festival that takes place at Black Rock City, a temporary community (like this satellite nest) erected in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, where descendants can escape and find themselves. This white sand hill reminds me of Nevada's flat, desertous regions...

    In Africa with termites, hard rain storms drumming on the termite mound can trigger nuptual flights, and humans can mimic this by drumming on drums as they stand around a termite mound to induce a nuptual flights of the elates. People do this to catch and eat the termites which are highly nutricious.

    I live in NSW Australia and have never lived near any 'red ants,' the two most common groups I find are very small black ants and the larger green ants which can sting. Neither ant species seems too interested in the other, they both have nests around my house and pass each other without any acknowledgment.
