  • Audemars Piguet Royal Oak vs Patek Philippe Nautilus, a question that begins by talking about the wave of quartz watches that hit the west in the 1970s, but it's in the aftermath that things really get interesting. With established watch brands crumbling left, right and centre, unable to compete with the prices of their eastern counterparts, the mechanical watch industry was forced to pivot, to realign its business objectives into something that would keep it alive. What followed was a move so bold and so risky it should never have worked. What resulted was the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus.

Love how you talk about these 2 watches. I own both and they're both works of art for different reasons. AP Royal oak is for the man who wears jeans t-shirt and a sports jacket. Nautilus feels more at home in a suit and matching cufflinks. One a oil billionaires watch, the other a billionaire ceo of fortune 500 company. It's world's apart and yet the same. One thing it does tell you when you see 1 of the 2 in a meeting, it says "I'm here to make money"

Another joy to look and listen to. These watches represent a philosophy I hate, an object made to be expensive and bought by people BECAUSE it's expensive to show the world you can afford something waaaaay overpriced for what it is.
Now with that said, I would still buy them if I could afford them, only for a different reason than what their initial idea was, because they are STUNNING!!! When it comes to choosing between the 2, I simply couldn't decide, one second I love the AP more, yet a couple of minutes later the PP hinged case amazes me. To he honest, if I could afford one, it would most likely mean I can afford both, so I wouldn't choose, but rather get both 😊

Aiden Brantley Well I am jealous! I’m just starting out on this journey and don’t have anywhere near the amount of money it would take to buy either one. I think the Nautilus reads as a more versatile watch, blurring the lines of sporty and dressy while the Royal Oak line is more unapologetic in its sportiness. The Nautilus has something akin to a sense of humor about it. The porthole latch, old-style TV shaped dial, bulbous features... it's silly, yet incredibly refined. If there's one thing rich people (who are generally older) crave, it's more time. And when something is silly, it seems youthful, and something youthful seems like there's plenty of time left. Time giving time, as it were.
The AP is a fantastic watch in its own right, but a close second (watch puns vol. 2) to the Patek when of a certain age/mindset. It's just not as joyous. With its sharp, aggressively angular design, it seems to be more structured towards the taste of the successful person looking to stay sharp* and "really make it," whereas the Patek is for the person who has more monetary success than is reasonably desired, and is now trying to advance on other, more emotional fronts.
That's my, reading-too-much-into-it take on these two legends. Both with their own strengths, and only better than the other in different times of one's life. I would like both pls send

I see in the comments that some guys are saying that the markers at 12 are not aligned if you look at 2:08 and i would like to add a few things. The font also looks a little bit different. If you look close enough at the A at pAtek, you will see that the gap at the “top triangle” of the letter is bigger when compared to other 5711. The markers also look a little bit too sharp, i think they look a little bit smoother on the other dials... We can be wrong, and it can be a difference between production years, but it should definitely be checked. And if it is a fake, I honestly don’t blame anyone who got fooled by it ( if anyone actually got fooled ). But anyway, keep up the good work guys!

The luck of the draw comes from how these two brands tapped into a human characteristic that has been there all along : the need to project a higher image of one's self. Once quartz watches appeared, mechanical watches, objectively, should've become obsolete. If you think about it, mechanical watches do seem quaint and antiquated. But brilliantly and luckily for these two watch makers, there are people who wanted to stick to tradition and, given the much higher prices of mechanicals, gave people, almost instantly, a status symbol. As if they are, by wearing these mechanical watches, saying, "Oh you got one of those newfangled quartz watches? Good thing they're cheap, now you could afford a watch. As for us, we'd rather stick with our mechanical watches because, you know, we have always been able to afford them."

There was a third in the 1980's and 90's the IWC Genta designed Ingeniuer. It has s similar bezel and used the same movement , the JLC 88X but the IWC added a soft iron cage to make is antimagnetic and a shock absorbing ring to make it more rugged with platinum rimmed rotor in a more comfortable watch. It has the same style integral bracelet and is a very comfortable watch to wear.

Keep in mind, both designs have been utilized in many different designs. The AP reflects from Baume Mercier Riviera and Hublot, up to the Vacheron overseas. The Patek is a traditional television design which is much more common in early Seiko, Bulova through to some fairly high end manufacturers. But for me the AP is a more accepted design in a high end watch. That of course if your buying only one and you desire a sport/luxury look.

love both and a year ago would of said 5711, but these days lean more to ro (specifically 15202). big part of that is that the ro bracelet is imo perfection- the very best on any watch. i also have come to appreciate the overall more agressive styling of the ro. 5711 is very soft and bubbly (and very nice). i do prefer the nautilus dial though- not a big fan of the ap one. both great pieces.

    • @whitebuffalo4904

    • @enricoper1793
      @enricoper1793 7 років тому +1

Actually the 15300 is theoretically the competitor of Nautilus 5711. They haven't got the monobloc case and istead of the "historichal" ultra-thin JLC 920 caliber. both of them have in-house movement. Basically, both these AP and PP are different watch compared to original Jumbo versions. In my opinion, focusing solely on the price tag is not the best way to compare overprised luxury watch like these. That's why RO 15202 in steel has no substitute in current watch industry of luxury steel watches.
Obviously if Watchfinder compared any ref. of RO Jumbo with the PP 3711 the story could be different.
Anyway, from left to right there are at least 15k euro of difference in terms of Street price, and the current Nautilus 5711 doesn't even have a bracelet with screws...

Both are obscenely over priced...but that has become their allure. It does not really matter much how good the watch is, but how expensive it is. And that defines 95% of its value. By the 1970s a new class of rich folks were emerging around the world, and over spending on watches was just one way to show off their wealth...and to try and buy respectability. The more these brands overcharge, the more that they are adored.

As an owner of an AP and Patek, and former owner of several Rolexes, the quality of these watches are incredible. Looking at pictures won't do any justice. Handle them in person and you will understand. I'm way more offended by a $12k Omega that looks like it was entirely made by machines.

    • @TonyStark-te1wy

There are extremely good replicas of these watches that can be bought for $400 and you couldnt tell the difference unless you open the watch up or are an absolute expert . And the difference is usually the font. The watches look and feel the same. And you might say that not true but they do and rolex has seen this as such a threat that they have been changing the watch trying to make it harder to copy but they still do. The thing is with revolution in technology these companies in china have access to extremely advanced and high end machines. Whats funny is the Swiss actually use to make counterfeit pocket watches of the better American ones.
