Prof Bronk is exactly what the RUSI is supposed to be doing.
I have said from the begining of the war in the Ukraine that instead of looking at the successes of NATOs weapons against Russian tanks we should be looking at our own airforces and considering whether they would have the same issues as the Russians.
We really need to look at our mission capabilities and whilst I appreciate Dr. Bronks opinion that we should be capable of relying on our allies I'm not sure that can be done for many of the countries simply because there is still a real likelihood of some countries going to war alone (e.g. Falklands).
Looking at the RAF - lack of SEAD, Lack of and small number of planned AWACS aircraft come to mind - both of which could be remidied with relatively small investments now but are fundamental to network centric warfare and warfare in the next 20-30 years.
I do certainly think that having a multirole aircraft does limit the pilots abilities to focus on a particular task set.

NATO doesn't need to look too hard at Russia because it already knows very well the problems it has. The decline of NATO armed forces has been painfully obvious for decades. The real issue is that leaders are unable to actually agree on what the actual problems are, and they are unable to agree on solutions.

The 10 year political delay allowed us to buy 88 airframes instead of 66 that were proposed 10 years ago. Plus the entire fleet will be Block 4 aircraft at minimum. The Hornets have been in RCAF service since 1982. The last of the CF-35A fleet is due in 2034, Hornets will fly until that time. USMC is still flying them, just not off the carriers anymore. No more traps but still have some airframe hours left in them. RCAF bought 25 RAAF A/B Hornets-18 flyable the rest in parts/training. Fleet is 94 with 86 flyable. Entire Hornet fleet is getting Hornet Extension Program-1 (HEP-1) comms, sniper pod upgrades, improved digital avionics. 36 of the lowest hour are getting further HEP-2 including APG-79 AESA radar/radomes from SuperBug to work with the AIM-120D we bought in 2017. AIM-9X and AGM-154 JSOW capability are included. Supposed to IOC in 2023.
All upgrades are supposed to support the RCAF/NORAD/NATO mission through 2032.

    What's on the walls?
In 1990, as a 19 year old American, I had the pleasure of visiting Sweden, staying in the home of the exchange student, Fred, my family had hosted the year before, with whom I had become close friends.
One member of that family was a fighter pilot in the Swedish air force, stationed at nearby Angelholm. The pilot, Anders, was kind enough to bring Fred and me on the base for a tour, his instructions were simply to not make it obvious I was American, but things were easy going enough that he obviously really wasn't worried.
Your description of the Swedish air force system makes his attitude make more sense to me today, he'd been in the air force about ten years and was fairly senior, and he must have felt that even if my not being a Swede was found out by his commanding officer, it wasn't going to negatively affect his career. (At 19, none of this occurred to me, but when I've thought of that day in later years, I've often wondered how much trouble he was risking and could only conclude, not much).
Anyhow, I recall getting a look at jets getting worked on in the hangar, so cool. Then we went to the runway to talk to someone about setting up a flight in a trainer aircraft. The someone was getting a jet ready to fly and while we were there chatting, they started the engines, which standing next to the wing was the loudest thing I've ever heard. It was painfully loud to the point where I was sure I could feel something in my ears tearing unless I jammed my fingers firmly over my ears. My friend did the same, while Anders wore a headset with a mic that both protected his ears and allowed him to continue talking.
At some point we went into the squadron offices. All over the walls were framed pictures of naked women, obviously clipped from magazines. One specifically I recall was a demonstration of anal sex with a big x over it, warning against the practice due to the risk of HIV transmission. Ah, the things one recalls.
Anders took us up in a prop driven, single engine aircraft with four seats. The seats were like metal lawn chairs with black cloth webbing. We flew all around the Helsingborg area where the family lived. He went over Oresund, which separates Sweden from Denmark, and did some rolls and spins. I recall Anders joking that if he strayed past halfway over the Sund, we'd be in Denmark and he'd have to spend the afternoon doing paperwork to explain why he'd done that. He carefully stayed on the Swedish side. Anders also kept asking how we were doing, were we feeling sick? I'm fortunate in that I don't suffer from motion sickness and I enjoyed the mild acrobatics he was doing. Anyhow, that day was one of the most fun of my life.
Consider the relaxed attitude of the Swedish air force in 1990, at a time when the USSR was in its final internal crisis, a month or so before Saddam invaded Kuwait, and draw your own conclusions.

Being cynical is a Canadian pass time, especially when it comes to procurement. Multiple governments both Liberal and Conservative cut military spending for decades. What really amazed me is that not one of them, ever, called out the political leadership or complained about the lack of training and equipment. It is clear the Canadian military is very demoralized. Trying to draw equivalency between Liberal and Conservative governments on defence is a fools game. Liberals are cancer for the military. They don't understand them, relate to them or like them. But they do LOVE them for photo ops and to commit them to all their pet projects.
Unfortunately, after each Liberal 'decade of darkness', Canada's military basically is so broken it finds itself in an existential crisis, which is where we are now... again.

Lately, I’ve been wondering, what if your country’s defense industry develops a game changing air to air missile with a tremendous range, fantastic radar, great computer logic for autonomous targeting, but it costs about as much as 1/5 an enemy fighter, could you afford to use it? If it takes five shots in a BVR fight to down an advanced fighter, are you winning the war? But then I thought, you also need to add in the cost of damage the incoming fighter could do on the ground or other aircraft, so bring on the super missiles.

Counties tend to rob from Peter to pay Paul and Democratic countries tend to be worse because they are doing it for the voters. For instance, four U.S. aircraft carriers have as many operational fighters as the UK, France and Germany combined. About half their money goes toward active troops and pensions. Those countries are also putting in their 2% of their GDP. Instead, the money is going toward social programs. Even with the high taxes and the inability to raise taxes higher due to rioting, those nations have incurred a higher debt to GDP ratio than the U.S.

If anyone can answer my question I'd appreciate it. Do European NATO fighters train against aggressors, or is it only the US doing this?

    • @pjotrtje0NL
      @pjotrtje0NL 5 місяців тому +3

Only the US has specific Aggressor units. Other NATO allies train with units who also have an aggressor role. Has got to do with sizes.

      @Dana-cb7vk 5 місяців тому +3

U.S. trains against/with/utilizing both, and atypically? NATO does too, but the amount, who, and what? Varies country to country/service to service/planned mission set to planned mission set. (Think- if the U.S. does and is in partner or Op4 with other NATO AirForces? They too get that experience! ;) ). The answer is nuanced, there is no blanket response really. Yes apllies, but again, how much of each can even be classified in some instances, depending on (planned) mission set.
Those who could provide in depth details to answer that? Cannot, or will not, amd assuredly are advised to avoid questions like this: as it can upset OpSec, and even put themselves and other pilots at risk.
I hope that helps answer your question, someone may have a better answer I am sure!

We often have pilots from other Air Forces training with our forces, partly so they can take back strategic/logistical information to their groups which they can then integrate into their training, making them and us a more cohesive group if we have to join up in real battles.

Interesting video. Bronk is always interesting.
When I saw the title, I was expecting something else. That is on me.
Actually, what I was expecting was some comparison with the Russians. If it came to a war between NATO and Russia, the latter's air force would be shot down in a day or two, based on what has gone on in Ukraine. In fact, Russia's air force has been losing capability steadily since the beginning of the Ukraine war. This is a combination of relatively poor training, the effect of sanctions on their technology and the loss of many of the experienced pilots they had.

I realize it would be expensive, but then everyone could train together too. Really doesn't have to be his essential USA they could just do it somewhere where it's possible to do that.
Even practicing over European airspace as a single space, instead of within political boundaries might be better. It doesn't sound like that's possible there. Not for training. So train it over here. Or somewhere.

Also i have to say i have little to no trust in the west EU NATO countries , if the war reaches the east NATO border , not because of incompetence but political agendas . The only other NATO allies i believe will honor the treaty are the other east eu NATO members and the U.S. The F-16 jet pilot training center recently opened in Romania gives me hope , because that was more of an U.S. effort .

Needless to say, the "investigation" led up to nowhere. Any explanation from the authorities is still missing. Nope. There is the USAF and some allied "support"...In my opinion. Without further ado:
Phantom plane played with the nerves of six NATO countries
    Jun 10, 2022
A small aeroplane toyed with the nerves of the air defences of six NATO members before landing on Thursday (9 June) in a small airfield in Bulgaria, whereby the pilot and passengers promptly disappeared.
The prosecutor’s office in the Bulgarian city of Targovishte launched an investigation into a mysterious incident with a small ‘Beechcraft’ plane that flew into the skies of several European countries and landed at a local airfield usually reserved for agricultural aircraft.
The aircraft was found abandoned with a still-warm engine.
It is unclear why the 60-year-old two-seater flew over almost all of Europe to land in Bulgaria or whether the unknown pilot was alone or had passengers.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Interior said the plane took off Lithuania and passed through seven countries, including Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Serbia, before landing in Bulgaria. Six of them, except Serbia, are NATO members.
The media reported that the air defences in several countries spotted the intruder, scrambling jets to intercept it while trying to initiate contact with the pilot, without success.
The plane entered Bulgaria from the northern city of Vidin, where it landed for refuelling, but it is not known precisely where it was refuelled.
The Ministry of Defense announced that the plane entered the airspace of Bulgaria without an approved flight plan shortly after 7 pm on Wednesday.
The plane was reportedly spotted by the Hungarian and Romanian Air Force, which scrambled F-16 jets to intercept the Beechcraft. Upon entering Bulgarian airspace, the country’s air force was also activated.
The media quoted the director of the airport in Debrecen, Hungary, who reportedly said the Beechcraft also landed at a small airport in Hungary. Reportedly five or six people got off and refuelled the plane using jerrycans. The Hungarian police tried to stop them, but they were swift and took off quickly.
