You are not crazy! Seems funny to me that Gkids or other producers haven't scooped up the rights for the bluray or whatever. It wouldn't look out of place in the Ghibli section of stores
This show is one of the first things I have ever watched. I was perhaps 5, in Italy in the late 1980s. I loved it, I even had the VHS of the "White Cliffs of Dover" (Italian Dub).

The Italian side of the production was in shambles from beginning to end. However one thing they managed to do right: The voice actors were amazing, some of the best in the business. They added endless flourishes and jokes, expertly delivered. Their work elevated the entire series, even the lower quality non-Miyazaki episodes. The voice characterization of Moriarty in particular is pure genius. The English dub cannot hold a candle to it.
I've just always loved mystery shows and after watching this video and finding out Miyazaki Hayao actually animated his own based off Sherlock Holmes, I was immediately impressed with the beautiful character designs and fantastic animations, especially during running scenes. Thanks Stevem for bringing Miyazaki's hidden gem to light.

Honestly the whole thing felt to me like a mix of the standard studio ghibli greatness + Looney Tunes + Disney's "The Great Mouse Detective". And I loved it.
Honestly tho even if you havent watch the original ducktales, check out the reboot sometime, its really good.
I've been wanting to watch new Ducktales just haven't gotten round to it.
To be fair I have the Ducktales Film around somewhere and the animation in that is stellar
Loved this show! As a child it aired in my country and it was actually my introduction to who Sherlock Holmes is.. the title song still gets stuck in my head every once in a while. Good times!
I loved Sherlock Hound growing up, and recently, I rewatched the show with my girlfriend. Now she loves the show, and is disappointed we didn't get more episodes. This truly is a forgotten gem, and I miss Miyazaki in this day and age.
My grandma had a VHS of this show and I always watched it every time we visited. My little sister has it now,
But now I'm happy to own the blue ray of the whole series now.
I just finished watching the entire series, and enjoyed the entire series.

I and my siblings practically teethed on this series! (There was a small children’s company that released a few episodes on vhs) Also, the characters are all based on dog breeds. Sherlock is a shiba inu (actually a corgi 😅) Watson is a Scottish terrier, Mrs Hudson is a golden retriever, inspector lestrade is a boxer (early police dog) and yes, moriarty is a wolf.
that's a very miyazaki idea that he'd personify each character with different Breeds
Actually you silly person (teasing myself from my other channel) Sherlock in this is based on a Corgi... Myazaki went with British dog breeds. All the other breeds are correct. Also Todd (short henchman) is based on a Pug and Smiley (tall lackey henchman) is based on a actual hound... likely a fox-hound or a beagle.

It was a transitional period in his life , apparently he tried to get the rights to another comic franchise to make a movie oh and he might of approached for tales of earthsea

Ive been wondering if there are any other obscure Miyazaki works people would like me to cover or at least stuff that hasn't been covered in a while. I've got a couple ideas in mind
I know the main topic of your channel is animation, but Miyazaki has an interesting and still unexplored body of manga works. Most of them haven't been translated, and some are hard to find, so it'd be interesting to see at least an overview of what he's done in manga form.

I’ve never forgotten this since I saw it as a kid. I happened to stumble upon it at my local library and then I kept borrowing it over and over again. It was my favorite thing. Now it’s very much a comfort show.
I found this whole series from a Finnish supermarket years ago with Finnish dub :D It probably cost something like 15€, it was a great find

@@LeeofChaldea I wish I could have watched this on VHS it would have blown my tiny child balls off, especially the Airmail episode with Marie spinning the gun and pinpoint shooting the rope while in a hotrod (the coolest thing I can imagine).
If I remember right it had the episode with the submarine and where they where stilling trains . I’m going to have to see about the tape now because I can’t remember if we got ride of it with a bunch of other stuff

Yeah, this was a really interesting Hidden Gem. well for me that is. and I don't how why, but I found this show by accident. When I was just trying to find the new thing to watch. like Tree of Palme, Green Legend Ran, or Night on the Galactic Railroad. And I found this show when I was looking up Nausicaa wiki page. It was such a delightful watch as well, it always gives me a sense of wonder every time I rented out from the library system.
It is a wondrous show I'm surprised its not more popular here in England considering how much we eat up adaptations of Sherlock. I think I also found it on the wiki or through a post on the 80sanime tumblr blog
I remember watching some episodes of this anime on VHS tape, When I was a kid back in the 90s. At the time I did not know this was one of Hayao Miyazaki's works. But it does have that same feel and look, not as high quality but close, as his anime movies. Good times, good times.
Thanks for mentioning Sherlock Hound i have never heard of this anime. I start watching become one of my favorites anime now. The anime give me vibes of Castle in the Sky and Great Mouse Detective awesome combo
I don't think I mentioned it here but hound did feel like a testing ground for lots of story pieces he'd use in his films later for example the backstory of Marie is the same as a character in Porco Rosso

As stated in the Video in the UK you can't buy the DVD it doesn't exist in America there is a discotech release though I'm not sure how rare it is

Wow, what nostalgia! I was not aware that he, Miyazaki, was the mastermind behind that anime. Seeing again this footage brings back fond memories of a good Saturday cartoon. Now I can assess that the anime was clearly above other shows.. at least from an North American perspective. Great work

Months later the series needs a lot of attention
Miyazaki was actually pretty true to the source material (for him). There are little easter eggs for Sherlockians, like the letters pinned to the fireplace in 221B Baker Street's livingroom (a detail straight from the books). 'The Small Client' is a direct lift of the Conan Doyle story 'The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb'; the only real differences are Moriaty inserted into the storyline as the recurring villain instead of the schmuck-of-the-week; Martha is a completely invented character; and the violence is completely removed from the plotline (though that moment when Moriaty was standing over the engineer with a cleaver, I genuinely held my breath wondering how true to the original Miyazaki was going to be). This Holmes is probably most similar to the Ronald Howard tv series adaption: a genial detective genius who is charismatic and friendly but eccentric and distracted. The Watson of the books is very much a straight man and action man, so this version is probably closer to the comic relief role in the Rathbone movies.

My dad and aunt were just watching an anime-style movie where Holmes is also a dog, like in this show. I entered the room to watch the ending and wondered if Ghibli was behind it. (No, it turns out it's from Hong Kong, and we all know how stuff made in Hong Kong is usually…to put it politely…sub-par to the works that inspired them.) I instantly thought of _Sherlock Hound,_ and it's refreshing to see how Miyazaki's creativity and storytelling still shine even in this lesser-known gem.
Aside from Spaceship Sagittarius,this was my other fave show as a kid...
man nostalgia hits really bad, ever since I have memory those DVD's have been in my room and I enjoyed them A LOT, I sometimes even watch them every once in a while. They are and always will be my favorite series of all time. Thank you for doing this video, a lost gem indeed

I am 99% convinced i have seen this show at some point as a young kid in the late 80s (which explains my love for the anthromorphic characters in Ni No Kuni), it's funny how over 2 decades later i got back in touch with Miyazaki through Spirited Away, Howl's moving castle and Princess Mononoke. The man is and always be an animation legend.

this series was very popular in france, it still air time to time, it is my childhood.
I only just became aware of this series because of a GIF showing Navy Dogs firing their guns, having to apply all my search skills to figure out what it was all about.... and I have a feeling my son and I are going to enjoy this classic series.
Being a Rai production, this is obviously shown from time to time and I grew up watching it, and it was one of my introductions to anime - the sense of movements and energy every single frame gave me just spoke to me, it carried lots of excitement.

I have a lovely 3 DVD set of this in Japanese with English subtitles, no idea where i got it from though.
My childhood favourite... I actually have to versions of this show in DVD, with finnish dub (only half of the episodes!) and finnish subtitles with japanese dub (all the episodes).
i just loved this as a child, maybe i will revisiit now.

I think the Blue Ruby and the airmail episode were my favorites, but the episode where Mrs. Hudson was kidnapped was close behind.
I cannot find any Japanese language version of the OP for this anime on UA-cam anymore, and just one short Japanese trailer. TMS has put a stop to Japanese language visual content for "Sherlock Hound," apparently. They've released English dubbed episodes on UA-cam, with the instrumental OP, without the Japanese lyrics. I wonder why...
I'm a huge fan for all of Miyazaki's work, especially his earlier cartoony stuff. His Lupin days are underlooked compared to the rest of his career.
@Noir Noodles It's true they are less looked at than the rest of his career, I get why the early 70s stuff is not as well known you can't get that stuff here in england and some of the animation is a bit stiff with a basic plot. His later work on the franchise should be celebrated though especially 145 and 155
Stevem Ah, that makes sense. But what I mean by the "Lupin days", is anything pre-Nausicaa where he mostly more cartoonish stuff but it still sorta seeps into his later stuff awsell. Miyazaki has a really unique style that just stayed with me, but I just got into his films.

I loved your video, it gave a good perspective for some of the background factors that were going on with the show at that time. (I'm not sure if something has changed between when this video was made 'til now but the playlist is viewable, for me at least. [I am watching it in America though, don't really know if that matters or not...])

I heard that HBO had the licence for a while though it might have just been the film version
The version I remember was the one where the bad guys were counterfeiting coins and Sherlock Hound was trying to rescue the inventor whose being forced to work on the scheme. Thanks for your reply.

Sherlock Hound is less forgotten than other series he did work on : Hustle Punch which you must watch for understanding where some of the S.H characters are coming from. Mirai Shonen Conan is also pretty important but few people know it and it's sad because its pre-ghibli theme are very imilar to lots of Miyazaki's ghibli movies.
Hustle punch is a Yasuji Mori project Hayao's involvement would have been key animation at most that was 66 he'd only been an animator for 4 years at that point
Conan is defo more popular than this though it is true it should get more attention

I used to watch the Arabic dub of the anime when it aired on Egyptian TV during the 90s, kind of my introduction to everything Sherlokian actually. I bought the DVD when I was in the UK recently.
You were lucky to get it before the HMV run dried up, that's cool though I wish I could have watched it on TV when I was younger
@@Stevem Yeah, I was pretty lucky although the English dub isn't very good especially compared to the Arabic dub, while not perfect still had more effort put into it than the English dub. Also, this version of Ms. Hudson was one of my early cartoon crushes as a kid imagine young me's disappointment when I watched more faithful Sherlock Holmes adaptations.
P.S. The Ducktales reboot is AWESOME! Now this is how yo do a reboot Cartoon Network!

Recently watched through the Miyazaki episodes for the first time and damn... Thought I was going to overdose on how charming it was haha. I found myself shouting like a fool at the telly "DUDE, THIS IS CHARMING, I CAN'T TAKE IT!"
If I had one complaint however (if you're like me, just watching the Mizayaki episodes) I feel like they have the episode running order all wrong. Between what seemed to be the first meeting between Hound and Moriarty in episode 5, and the underwhelming, but still decent finale with the old stingy git worried about his money I would have put it like this...
5, 3, 9, 11, 4, 10
This way you get the first meeting first. The penultimate one gives us a window into Moriarty being more than a top hat wearing, mustache twirling villain (even though he dresses like one) and there some humanity there. Something like that feels better suited towards the end. And going with the aeroplane finale as I thought compared to episode 11 the stakes were higher, what with being on airborne, no way to land and with a bomb on the plane. But yea that's my wee head canon (proper) order of Miyazaki run.
Also with Mrs. Hudson in episode 10, whilst she may not actually be a butler, as she's a house keeper, she definitely falls into that butlers are badasses trope as seen with some versions of Alfred from Batman, and Walter from Hellsing.
Oh and one last thing, episode 5's chase with the kid, Moriarty in the big truck chasing her down and Sherlock coming in for the save in his car... Terminator 2! Or that's what it reminded me of anyway. Especially when Moriarty was breaking through all kinds of walls in it, and when you thought he was finished, he still kept on coming until finally he did crash and stop.
Your order might be more correct since Miyazaki never ordered the episodes himself, but I can't for the life of me remember Moriarty meeting sherlock for the first time which episode was that?
I don't know if Hudson is much like a Butler though, she's the house keeper as in she owns the house they live in, but honestly I think her Badass moves predate the popularization of that trope, in anime at least.
Cameron does watch Anime I know that for a fact, huge fan of Battle Angel Alita (hence producing it) and Mamoro Oshii's work. SO I would not be surprised if he saw this or if Spielberg tipped him off.

The first meeting was the Carbuncle episode, number 5. Well for the order, I do feel 9 and 11 are fairly interchangeable in terms of order. You could easily watch either one first without too much of an impact on the continuity. I also thought as well, the day after posting my comment, for when Mrs Hudson got kidnapped she could have probably quite easily escaped at anytime, but like you said, when you've got weaponized kindness why use force to disarm your captors.
Also thanks dude for taking the time to read my ramblings. It was one of those where I thought I was finished but it was a case of, wait there was that. Now I'm done..... ok, this is definitely now the last bit, with the Terminator like bit lol
There was one other bit as well I forgot to mention. I thought in some episodes the English vocal quality sounded abit on the rough side, compared to the original Japanese dub and the actual score. I thought it seem less like TV and more like some kind of old radio drama. Not I'm having it as a knock against it. It was just another thing to add to the charm, or thats how I felt about it anyway
But yea thats my ramblings over, for now at least lol
@@DemonDethchase You could argue so, the difference to me is in the class and relationship.
Hudson is not subservient to Holmes or Watson like a Butler, she is also their landlord as well as the person that tends to the house. They are on equal terms, if anything Hudson has more leeway on the two than they do on her. Holmes is not of class to have a Butler I believe as a Detective, Holmes relationship within class and money is suppose to be fluent so he interact with both the richest and poorest of people.
When I see Hudson doing her action-y set pieces it feels more so like Miyazaki doing his thing. A domestic character like Hudson in the novels is not his style he likes "fighting girls". So this idea that in her past Hudson was this daredevil pilot who rode fast cars and shot guns, brings another layer to her. In that she chose the quiet humble life of a housekeeper.
I've only heard little bits of the english VO and I know the quality isn't the best. Although maybe an old radio style was the intention to go with the setting

nope that's not right Conan died in 1930 current copyright is 70 years after death old copyright was 50 years standard but could be extended which im sure is what the Doyle residents did

@@Stevem That's almost right. Japanese Copyright law is a doozy, so here we go. It's pretty messy but Japan doesn't recognize Copyrights from before the war, so films before 56 are PD including Disney works, except they had a weird post WWII law that extended various select allied authors extended protection Because they didn't observe it during the war mostly on literature.
So if we assume it had regular protection, in Japan it's life plus 50, so Sherlock was public domain there lock stock & barrel by 1980, you can not manually extend Copyright at all under the Berne Convention unless it's by national decree, like what happened in 2018
Sherlock could only have been manually renewed for a Max of 56 years in US under pre 1977 law works but their protection ran out and so were public domain around the 40s or so. The only place Sherlock would've been under strict Copyright would've been Britain, France and a select few other countries at the time; the laws have since increased it
In any case it's also funny because Doyle himself never cared if others used Sherlock or not because he hated the character by the end of it all & never tried to stop unauthorized sequels or plays. The estate has since been shaking people down for money until the courts forced them to stop in 2013

For example right now The Chronicles of Narnia are totally public domain in Canada, New Zealand, Japan; that until recently had a 50 year p.m.a. but it's absolutely under © in Britain, France etc
Even when something enters the public domain like it's supposed to Copyright trolls can swoop in and shake people down for money like the Doyle Estate, the Robert E Howard Estate; This one doesn't even have any family members involved, the Edgar rice Burroughs estate; they even managed to shake Disney down for money on public domain books; now that's a hustle.
@@RoyalKnightVIII It was funded in Italy so I think it is Italy Copyright law where the issue came up since it was Italian Public Broadcasts, I don't believe the legal battles were fought in Japan (all the sources which talk about legal trouble are italian so yeah nothing to do with japanese copyright)

One of the few times I prefer the dub over the sub, because you can't have an English accent when speaking Japanese natively. Not to mention, it seems the English dub has more footage and less "On the Next..." segments.
I can understand why Coyly Doyle estates would make it end but then without this Castle in the sky wouldn’t have its iconic scene in the beginning of the film where Shita falls from Goliath to start the opening of the movie. There is another Sherlock houndsh anime that has been made and Coyle Doyle estate didn’t say anything about it!!!!!!!

Well, actually to answer the title in the 80-90's it was really common (in France at least) to buy the diffusion rights of a list of animes series without even looking at the content or translate the names first, you only sorted what was good and bad after they were translated and broadcasted -which caused hilarous situations where you would get Hokuto no Ken or other violent shonens airing just after episodes of Candy Candy-.
This show was pretty well known because of that method, it was still broadcasted maybe 20 years back as Miyazaki's name allowed it to escape the anti-anime wave of the late 90's.
I can only talk about the show from an English speaking nation perspective I know this show has done better in Europe in particular Italy since they helped fund it, however in places like the Uk it was neither broadcast or gained that much of a following. As of right now it is the only miyazaki directed project (not shorts) that you can't buy or stream here. I believe the situation is different in the US, though I do know the show was only ever broadcast on HBO occasionally (maybe the film version).EDIT apparently the Italian market botched the release cutting up each episode into 5 parts showing one episode a week so the show is all but forgotten there now though I have heard in places as far as Egypt and Finland it has a following

It is episodic and eh they're not anywhere as good I'd watch the Miyazaki eps and see if you feel like watching more

@@Stevem For my part the first time I saw this series was the Italian version! The voice actors also did the sound effects, it's very funny :D
Having put some thought into it, you may be right about it being originally Japanese: I recall they had to change the Italian translation in an episode of the second season because the original Japanese version implied committing seppuku, which didn't match other cultures than Japan at that time... :)
