    animator for Japanese anime here:
    here are a couple of things that may help you in the future for animation and coloring processes:
    - anti aliasing is really helpful, specially in the coloring process
    -dividing the cells in different layers can help out too, i.e. noodles in cell A, smoke in cell B, hand in cell C
    To cause some contrast between the hand's colors and the wall, I would recommend adding shadows on the left corner (if that makes any sense), it would help out to discern from one another!
    Incredible job, I listen to your videos while I work, thank you!

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  7 місяців тому +19

      Shadow could have helped there that's true.
      To be clear there were several different layers in CSP.
      Such as fire layer, smoke layer, smoke layer 2 , the water level was its own layer which i should have kept it that way, moreover the hand and noodles were separate layers digitally before i draw them on paper too.

    • @TheMediaKnights
      @TheMediaKnights 7 місяців тому +2

      I'm curious what you mean by "anti-aliasing", I noticed in the Amazon Prime documentary for the Evangelion Rebuilds that they were coloring and doing lineart with harsh aliased lines at a high image resolution so the aliasing wasnt noticable in the final product, but when they would zoom in you could see the jagged aliased lines. Is this not common practice and do studios use smoother anti-aliased lines instead?

    • @blufudgecrispyrice8528
      @blufudgecrispyrice8528 7 місяців тому +4

      @@TheMediaKnights I think he meant aliased, it's easy to mix up the terms. You draw (or at least the clean line art) in aliased lines. This makes the fill tool easy to use and keeps your colours to a minimum. Then when you composite your animation, you use a smoothening effect, which anti-aliases your lines.
      Of course, sometimes it's just really high res too I guess. Stevem talks about it in his Princess Mononoke video.

    I remember that ever since my family saw howl's Moving Castle, we all said we want the bacon and eggs.
    Fast forward to my older brother Moving to California, he zoomed me during the pandemic making the bacon of the correct thickness and eggs, then proceeding to eat it in front of us. We were all really jealous.
    Amazing video as usual, stevem. You were as talented of an animator as Atsuko Tanaka herself.
    I always thought Spirited Away was interesting for how it portrays food, how throughout the movie it feels like the food looks gross, mainly from how characters like no-face are eating it, but when we get to Zeniba's house, the food is in smaller portions, and it looks delicious. Not only that, but no-face eats it in a much more reserved manner. I feel like the food in this scene signifies that things are gonna get better for Chihiro and Haku, which they do.
    Also, RIP your cat. They were always a fun part of your streams, and I hope they rest well.

    Your videos are so informative and interesting, I really don't think an animation fan could ask for something better than what you already provide with your work. Even lower scale videos like this one are very well made.
    Also, if anything about Miyazaki comes out of Suzuki's mouth, I think it's safest to assume the exact opposite is true. Suzuki tried to create a myth and I would say he definitely accomplished to do so, but it's honestly time to show the reality of the industry, and you have been a big part of that here on UA-cam.

    as always -- a fantastic job! this was so interesting and informative. having lived in japan for some time, i can confirm that food is something that is unexpectedly entrenched into the social fabric of the culture, so it always made sense for it to be reflected in ghibli movies, but the fact that there's so much more in his approach an influences makes a lot of sense.

    Very well constructed video! Tho i hope you can take this critique lightly but the reason it didnt get that close to ghibli is because you kept too close to your irl reference shape language wise. The weight is also very off since you kept very close to the reference there as well, ghibli has post realistic movement that puts lots of emphasis on weight, ideally you would have tried to have it slow into the shot but itd be understandable if you didnt want to inbetween more than you had to. If you don't have irl training for anime style inebtweening itd been best for you and your wrist both to just stick to digital and just play arround with brushes that can emulate the effect instead, afterall the lineart gets scanned in a way that aliases it for anime stuff and then it gets softened again in compositing, so going traditional can be redundant if you understand what i mean

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  6 місяців тому +1

      Part of the point of changing up the method like going back to pencil is it's part of the challenge and experience, I'm never that happy with brush emulation so that was kinda the reason I did it that way. Also it makes for better viewing experience.

    You've already got them so you might as well use them, but Blackwings are very overpriced for what you get. Tombow Mono (Pro)s and Mono 100s are nearly identical quality and much easier to find at a less insane price. That said, I got a box of BW Naturals at a discount and they're among my favourite pencils I've every used. A joy to draw or write with.

    I'm absolutely down with more content of STEVEM basically clapping back at what I must assume would've been a very annoying twitter thread or tiktok trend made by people who have no idea what they're talking about.
    That said, it's less crazy than you might think that a country would want to control the perception and usage of their culture's food abroad. France has been successfully waging this war, for decades now, on a number of traditional articles of French cuisine, especially cheeses and of course wines, but especially champagne. Why do you think you ever heard some hipster state in an all knowing tone "It's not real champagne unless it comes from the Champagne region of France." That's due to French meddling to make sure people associate Champagne with France, and the highest quality champagne with France most definitely.
    This is done smartly by the way. They don't send ministers to other countries to tut tut people when a wine mom buys cheap box champagne. Instead, they raise tariffs on their exports and encourage their producers to aim at higher class markets to charge more money for their product. Because a lot of people with too much money and not enough sense think in a logical fallacy (specifically, the sunk cost fallacy, though in a proactive sense) whereupon they believe that if something costs more money, therefore it must be high quality (the fallacy here is a reversal of causality: if something is high quality, most would be willing to pay more money for it, but a middle quality good pretends to be high quality by merely raising its price without changing the underlying quality of the good). And people who think this way (and there are many, many people who do) also love to brag about how much money they spend on frivolities, as it signals their wealth to others.
    So a dude who spent $400 on imported champagne or cheese that he could have bought the exact same product for a 20th of price if he knew where to shop ends up becoming the enforcer of pushing such food culture chauvinism on behalf of some union of the French government and the French wine producers cartel who forced the market to overcharge for their product. Because his ego *demands* that others know how much money he was willing to spend to import the "finest" goods when plebs had to go down to Trader Joe's and get $2 Chuck.
    And lest anyone think it's *just* France that does this, it's not. Food export rules run rampant throughout the EU and especially in Southern Europe where Greeks, Italians, Spaniards, and the Portuguese are all imitating France and working to control how people in other countries perceive their most famous dishes (Portugal is making major inroads here because I don't think any American had even heard of tapas outside of New York City a decade ago, but now that stuff is freaking *everywhere* trendy). Because 1) it allows them to sell exports at much higher prices, and 2) it increases tourism when it creates a foreign snob culture that insists they must visit the home countries to have the "authentic experience" of those foods. It's literally a win-win financial decision: you charge more money, and they not only pay you more money for no legitimate reason, but then they come over to your country and spend a lot more money to thank you for your service.
    Now, as you're a Brit (I assume), and I'm an American, I find this behavior absurd. But I've seen the lengths some of these food protectionist unions go to too many times to not realize there's a definite logic to this kind of policy making. For pete's sake, there are Italians selling tiny bottles of Balsamic vinaigrette for literally hundreds of dollars right now! And people will buy it! Vinaigrette is a *waste* product from the wine making process that people figured out how to market and sell so people would toss it on salads.
    If you can convince people to pay you quarter month's rent to buy your waste products, you're not the one being foolish.

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  7 місяців тому +1

      It's absurd because the approach was unfeasible, how can you try and regulate over 20,000 restaurants outside your country boundaries and the comments were born of xenophobia as the culture minster saw Korean food in a japanese restaurant in california (run by a korean) and was shook. I'm well aware of gastronationalism, whose homework do you think the Japanese copied after all. In the Eu you can't even call something champagne unless it comes from France.

    I commend your efforts at recreating a cooking cut, however your approach to drawing is flawed. You could've animated the hand in passes, allowing you to focus on the timing first, drawing rougher shapes, and then breaking down the hand into its parts to get more consistency on the fingers. That being said, hands are extremely difficult to animate! The timing is what seems the most off to me, there's little easing and there does not seem to be any weight or resistance from the water and the noodles pushing against the chop sticks. Keep animating!
