  • A quick review of the new Lion Brand Shawl in a Cake yarn. For this review I made one of my favorite patterns, Fortune's Shawlette by MooglyBlog.
    Yarn: www.ravelry.com/yarns/library... I used the Half Moon colorway.

    You really do a great job with these videos. You are informative, clear, and very respectful of people‘s time. Thanks for all the editing work that you put into your sharing of your expertise.

      Thank you so much! My goal is to try to get all the information that I would want to know if I was trying to buy yarn online without being able to touch it. As for the videos themselves, my husband does all my filming and editing. He puts a lot of time in to getting editing them length down to something manageable and getting the colors and sound just right and adds in all the little extras like the yarn labels and other graphics. I am glad that it's appreciated!

    I seldom view tutorials (I prefer written patterns by far unless trying a new stitch) but this caught my eye since I just purchased this yarn. I'm tremendously impressed with you and have subscribed. This is something I seldom do. I look forward to seeing othe information and perhaps patterns. Thank you for a great straightforward tutorial and take care 🦋

    Thank you so much for addressing the worsted-weight labeling and your opinions on it. I came into some of this yarn from someone else and immediately felt like 4 was wrong, and a lot of reviews don't voice an opinion, they just state it as fact. So, thank you!

    Thank you for the heads up on the difference between Lion Brand's opinion of the yarn weight and what it actually is! This is exactly the information I was looking for and couldn't find it on Ravelry.

      If you dig around in the comments on the Shawl in a Ball yarn page there are a few people who mention that it doesn't feel like a worsted weight, but that's really about all I could find. There are almost no comments on the Shawl in a Cake yarn page. I know they say it's worsted weight, but I really felt like it was lighter as I worked it up...

      Well then I think you'll like shawl in a cake, too! I think the biggest issue people had was just the skeins collapsing, so they took that part out of the equation. I don't think they changed anything else based on my experience and reviews I've read. Thanks for watching!

    I agree with everything you said. I've made 4 shawls with this yarn. I used bagoday crochets pattern, "Paradise shawl" as you said, the color changes are beautiful! The pattern does a great job of hiding the fact, that it's a roving yarn.

      Agreed, it is a really stunning color change for a commercially produced yarn. I've seen similar hand dyed stuff, but no one else (Red Heart/ Bernat/ etc) beats Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball for color changes. Thanks for watching!

  • @patricecooper8419

    I want to really thank you for letting us know about the Shawl in a Ball yarn. I have had a bad experience with Mandala yarn-it is really thin, and when I pulled the string from the center, it was a messy funky situation--it got so tangled that one cake had to be thrown out!! So are you saying that this particular yarn gets all tangled up too? I was about to get some Shawl in a Ball, until I came to your informative review. Thank you so much for your helpful review! I don't want another bad experience with this yarn, because it's too costly !
    So would you recommend Shawl in a Cake? Can you please tell me how is that better? Thank you again for your time and helpful review! This was a lifesaver! Can I knit with Shawl in a Cake, because I can't crochet.
    And so is halo the fuzzy part of the yarn?

    • @ExperimentsinCrafting
      @ExperimentsinCrafting  5 років тому +2

      That's too bad that you had a bad experience with Mandala yarn. I always work from the outside of the cake if I can so that it unwraps much smoother. If you work from the center your ball will collapse into a mess about halfway through. I think the cake form is much better that shawl in a ball. And yes the halo is the fuzzy/glowy part of the yarn. And yes you can certainly knit with shawl in a cake. I only crochet, but there is nothing about it that wouldn't lend itself to both hobbies! Thanks for watching!

    • @patricecooper8419
      @patricecooper8419 5 років тому +1

      @@ExperimentsinCrafting I want to update you on the Mandala yarn-I've learned how to manage it now. I have just one question though...can one shawl be made Rom a cake of the Mandala yarn?
      Also, I took the chance to purchase the Shawl in a Ball yarn, and you are right-I did pull the end out from the outside,and that worked very well...now I did mess up on my shawl as it was smaller, but I carefully pulled it apart, and I was able to begin the Shawl again.

  • @susanmei9980
    @susanmei9980 4 роки тому

    Is there a way to rewind the shawl in a ball yarn using a ball winder, so it won’t get all tangled up later? I am new to rewinding yarn, so I didn’t know if it would work for this.

    • @ExperimentsinCrafting
      @ExperimentsinCrafting  4 роки тому

      Yeah, you should be able to. I would just take it slowly and try to contain the ball. I'm not sure whether to suggest starting from the inside or outside... the ball is so fragile either way. If you can have someone feed it while you wind I think I'd go with the outside. If not I think I'd pull from the center. Just watch it towards the end--it'll make a mess of itself if you aren't super careful. Thanks for watching!

    • @susanmei9980
      @susanmei9980 4 роки тому +1

      Experiments in Crafting I wonder if putting it on a spike (carefully) or a thread stand, so it could gently spin while winding it, would make it work better? Or would it be just the same as if I used it straight from the outside of the ball?

  • @melissabordelon8556
    @melissabordelon8556 6 років тому +1

    Do you recommend starting this yarn from the center pull or from the outside?

    • @ExperimentsinCrafting
      @ExperimentsinCrafting  6 років тому +2

      I pretty much always work from the outside of the ball because if you work from the center you will reach a point where the ball can't stand up on it's own and will collapse, sometimes into a mess. This yarn doesn't have much structure and has a ton of halo, both of which will make for a mess while untangling. Stranded yarns like Red Heart It's a Wrap Rainbow are also really a bad idea to work from the center, because nothing keeps those strands apart and if they tangle it's going to be a nightmare.
      If I really want to start with the inside color I usually rewind my ball so the outside color becomes the inside. If that's not an option for you, and you have to have the inside color be the starting point, then my suggestion is to not travel with that yarn at all. Put it in a yarn bowl ( or a regular bowl) and don't disturb it too much once you get past the half way point. You could also dig through the options at the store and find one where the colors stop and start where you are happier with them.

    • @kathrynphipps2529
      @kathrynphipps2529 4 роки тому

    • @ExperimentsinCrafting
      @ExperimentsinCrafting  5 років тому

      Sorry for the late response. I must have missed this comment. I prefer to work my cakes from the outside if at all possible. If you work from then center about halfway through the ball starts to collapse on itself and then it can become a tangled mess. If you leave it in a yarn bowl and you don't move it around or take it with you then it's not a big deal, but when you travel with yarn like I do it is a problem. If you work from the outside the ball just gets smaller but you don't pull the center out and the ball doesn't collapse.

      Absolutely! The shawl that I am wearing is made from one ball, including the edging! If you want to make a really solid shawl, it's going to either be smaller or you might need a second ball, but for this pattern, which was very lacy it made a pretty good sized shawl. There is quite a bit of yarn packed pretty tight into the cake. Thanks for watching!
