Lynn always raved about this knife, in San Mai. He said they were virtually indestructible. The 3v is nice, but a bit more hard, and brittle. But eithor way u cant go wrong. I have a outdoorsman in vg10 San Mai, and adore it. Love cold steel.

The tang is purposely created with a stick tang end, like the Natchez and loredo Bowie's because it lightens the blade and helps with weight reduction and balance. Good for combat blades, or hunting knives, not ideal for wood work.
Edit: Stick tang end also helps with cushioning vibration from using the knife.

The Natchez and Laredo have wire tangs, supposedly to take and transfer energy better with less shock to the hand. It's less sturdy than a stick tang, but they're bred more for battle anyway.

@@knifevideochannel4657 If you look closely there is some different in blade shape. The new version is more pointy. Yes, made in Japan models are considered previous gen but there also made in taiwan version who shares same blade shape as Japanese, coated 3v model but i think its discontiunued.
I've tried trading for the DLC 3V version a couple times, Awesome variant of the Tai Pan.
It's big, it's bold, it's spectacular. I have one as well.

Cool you described the inner anatomy of the tang. Great overview as always! This is definitely a sweet larger fixed blade, would be a really fun knife to own. It's always seemed like cold steel does a great job with their blades.

I stumbled across the short video of the Tai Pan with exposed tang while researching pricing! People always ask about what's underneath the Kraton material, So I put a link of that video in description. It's definitely a cool knife that I'll probably never get rid of, One of those "fun" blades in the collection.

I had mine for 5 months now and you got your for a great price ,it was $169 back when I got mine and if I had known of the price to you got your for I would already have my second Tai Pan San Mai vg10.
It out slashes my other dagger even my Applegate Fairbairn Boker although the TP is longer and a little heavier.
But I love them both.
I also want the 3v if I can get on for about $225 or $240.
Oh and the steel is still made in Japan just not the knife.
It's a fantastic well made knife for the $239.00 the large retailers are asking! For $149-$165 it's borderline a steal!! I'm very impressed with the Tai Pan (And most other Cold Steel knives) , But have my sights set now on the 3V version of the Recon Scout. Thanks for watching PP4R

I’ve got an OSS so I suppose I’d sooner take that out bush bashing over the taipan. @ Ryan Gibson I bought the Tai Pan for collection purposes only , No plans to use it harshly. After watching numerous videos (mostly from Cold Steel) of the blade withstanding everything thrown at it, I've no doubt it's a tough piece.

Has anyone had a problem of the tip not being symmetrical? The line that goes through the center of the blade is off. I got mine off Amazon and I’m sending it back for another one.
I have all the SanMai Tanto knives and they are made in Taiwan. They are all perfectly made,they are the new Japan when it comes to quality production. All of the xl and larger folders are made there to. Even the 1917 Frontier Bowie is made in India,who is the Windlas company who makes very good swords and also deliver swords and stuff to the US Army. It is handforged and a super solid knife,I highly recomend it. India never stopped using swords and they really know how to do it. Mine is made out of AISI1080 high carbon. They also make the 1849 Riflemans Knife. My point is that it must not be made in USA or Japan for it to be great quality. The Machetes are made in South Africa,but the heat treat is great and you cant break one

How was insert and withdraw on the sheath? Several reviews mention the sheath being difficult esp for removal. One guy inserted his knife ‘almost’ then used a heat gun to heat it up and cool to loosen the grip. Great video, thanks!
I've used a heat gun before to adjust kydex, But never this injected molded plastic. The withdrawal on this knife is stellar, No issues at all. The master tanto I had awhile back has retention problems though. Thanks for watching Tom
Beautiful dagger. Just got mine yesterday off Amazon for the crazy price of $126! Grab one now because they will never be cheaper.
Just want to update you on the EK Commando knife. They are actually $154 now for this all US made knife and sheath on the Ka-Bar site. I scored mine during their early Christmas sale for $75! Also, it is 1095 cro-van steel, and the thing is flawless and a beast. General Patton carried this knife, which is cool too.

It’s a great double edge knife, I also have the EK from Kabar it too is a great knife, but I prefer the cold steels handle, it’s very comfortable, the sheath is the only thing I don’t like, it seems to dull the blade, but the knife it self is awesome !!

You didn’t even mention how good the balance is. The cg is right where your index finger goes so it’s extremely nimble and easy to turn and control.

I picked one of these up and it is really a nice knife. I got mine off of Amazon and was very impressed with how nice it is, and you can definitely see the laminate line in the steel. Consequently, I picked up a used Tai Pan off of our local gun classifieds, it is a Tai Pan made in Japan (so marked) but it only has that marking and the Cold Steel mark on the other side of the blade. It's not marked San Mai III, VG-1, VG-10 or anything else. Anyone know anything about the older Tai Pans? I think it is a CS13D, at least that's what I was able to run down after doing some research.
I'm pretty sure the original had San Mai III on the one side and was made with VG1 core in Japan. Not sure if they made any in other steel before that, But I know there are fakes out there floating around!
The New Taiwan version is nicely made and a bargain at Amazon price. Thanks for watching MJA
@@knifevideochannel4657 thanks for answering. After some more research I learned that the first version, made from 1995-2007 was not a laminate version but made from straight AUS8 steel. This would be the version I bought. The VG1 San Mai knives were made from 2007-2015 from what I was able to figure out, from 2015 until modern times they are VG10 San Mai III, and during that time production changed completely to Taiwan (after a change in ownership of the brand, I believe). But Taiwanese production for Cold Steel is not new, some of their more well-known designs were produced in Taiwan in the 1990s, like the Black Bear Classic. All in all, not super easy information to find. I found a lot on the Hattori knife collectors' webiste.
@@knifevideochannel4657 oh, and I'm pretty certain this older one I got is genuine, I found the specs and it is spot on in length and weight, and it is pretty obviously a Cold Steel, it's quite nice, but the big give away on the vintage ones is the sheath. The leather sheath was very specific and is a pretty good indicator right from the get go if you are looking at a fake or not. Thanks again!
While my VG1 Japanese Trailmaster is impeccably made, The Taiwanese Cold Steel blades I've bought have been top notch too.

I am also really feeling the double edge dagger vibe lately. I really didn´t like that bladeshape in the past, hmm interesting how things change. Mmm, the Combat Trodon is the best looking OTF Microtech makes in my opinion. The bigger blade seems nice with the slimmer profile.
What do you think about the Acta Non Verba M500? Another one that´s not so inexpenisve, but i really like the look.

What is the better Steel ? 3v or the san mai ?
Because this isn't a big chopper or camp knife , I'd go with the San Mai for its stainless steel. That being said, If your going to stab through car hoods and ammo cans the 3V hits the mark. They both have strengths and weaknesses. Thanks for watching Renke
