  • From the 2014 Tour Program. Long Road, Ēriks Ešenvalds (b. 1977)
and Balleilakka, A. R. Rahman (b. 1966), arr. Ethan Sperry.
Recorded in Feb. 2014 at the First Lutheran Church of Rockford IL. I also cut in close ups from the River Forest performance, which I know will upset purists, but hey--it allowed me to add some close up of faces in the video.
    Long Road
I love, I love you night and day
As a star in the distant sky.
And I mourn for this one thing alone
That to love, our lifetime was so short, so short.
A long road to heaven's shining meadow
And never could I reach its end.
But a longer road leads to your heart
Which to me seems distant as a star, to me.
    A long road...
High above the arch of heaven bends
And light so clear is falling.
Like a flow'ring tree the world is blooming.
Overwhelmed, my heart both cries and laughs.
O...like a flow'ring tree the world is blooming
Overwhelmed, my heart both cries and laughs, and laughs.
A long road to heaven's shining meadow
And never could I reach its end.
But a longer road leads to your heart
A longer road leads to your heart
    My love
Which to me seems distant as a star
    A long road.

for non Tamil speakers Balleilakka, is a song about village life in one of the southern states of India, Tamil Nadu, where the singer sings about a scene movie where the actor rajnikanth visits a village to pick a wife so the song is roughly translated as thus, " who is he? a Pandya king? a chera king?, a chola king? a sun/ a moon? who is he? reveal me now " then "lets go to a village in districts of madras or, salem or madurai or tiruchy, or thirutani the beauty of the cauvery river, playing kabadi game, natives with handle bar mustache, mud path, huts , spicy country chicken curry dish and unpolished red rice, damsels with plaited hair and traditional saris, casual flirts with maidens, Oh How can I forget the beauty of a country (Tamil village) life ?" ... the grrrr, durrr sound etc are not tamil, its just like saying wwwwwwwwhat a bbbbbbeauty etc..

What a beautiful explanation! Except for the "reveal me now"....its actually "tell me now!".

the tamil words, the way how its arranged in this song convey emotions, its called IRATTAIKILAVI & ADUKKUTHODAR in Tamil grammar which is 2300 years old atleast which the tamils follow even today. its so poetic and cute the way words are arranged to convey the meaning. in olden days, kings would heavily shower them with riches for such kind of poetic mastery over the language. so artisticccc

Not many Americans let alone Indian know that the Nobel prize winning astrophysicist late Subramaniyam Chandrasekar was a Tamil from Tamil Nadu and NASA named an X-ray after him called Chandra X-ray Observatory 15 years ago. His uncle another Tamil C V Raman (Chandra's father's brother) who won Nobel prize for physics in the 1920's.
These singers have won the hearts of Tamils worldwide.

Absolutely delightful performance. The best choral rendition of balleilakka I have come across so far. Embracing diversity and taking it to inclusion is a virtue and your choir has taken it to a new level. Kudos.

Actor Rajanikanth is not a tamil by birth but 70 millions of tamils worldwide adore him as tamil superstar. All of you singing tamil song are all honourary tamils if I remember the criteria given by former chief minister of indian state of Tamil Nadu in 1995 that any one who can speak tamil is a tamil.

Damn as a Tamil you guys nailed Balleilakka 100%. Rock on. By the way, I recommend these films for folks who never heard of Rajinikanth: Baashha and Endhiran. They are awesome films and I hope whoever sings this can check them out. The film this song is from is Sivaji which is also one of my favourite Rajinikanth films. Check that too and keep up the awesome work.
